First the positive: the meats are tasty but some cuts felt very smaller compared to other chain locations. I came here with a reservation for 5:45 on a Saturday and was promptly seated. The ordering process was fast, but anything beyond that was an absolute SLOG. We ordered a value meal and hangar steak during happy hour, and the vegetables and soups came out at a decent pace. We then proceeded to wait about 20 minutes before waving over a manager to ask about our mere SEVEN plates of beef! SIX plates came and you might be wondering why I'm missing one. That's because our waiter forgot our hangar steak and midway through our meal, I had to double check with my waiter to make sure I wasn't tripping. Turns out I wasn't, and they served me my steak instantly. Weird how it took 20mins for some raw meat to come out, but I guess after escalating to a manager our meats came out promptly. This chain establishment can get a pass on its slow service. But let's talk about grill changes. No one came by for a grill change when clearly the flames were getting big from the oil and grease in the meats, and the top being absolutely blackened. We had to flag down the manager again since we did not see one person carrying grill changes. The only time they appeared promptly without asking is when they cleared our table. After receiving the check they started to wipe where I was resting my arms before I even had time to gather my belongings. Let that sink in. Overall this place absolutely stunk in terms of service and overall experience. At least Gyu-Kaku has great quality control on their meats and flavors, but the service here is very, very lacking. I will probably not come back to this establishment.

They constantly have specials that they rotate in and out and they're always delicious. Their karaage is some of the juiciest karaage I've had, and they have special draft beers from Japan. I'd recommend going during some of their happy hour offerings for a good beer and food. While they are a little on the pricier side, their portions well make up for it. The quality of food and service here is unmatched, and I often bring friends from out of town here. The iced matcha has free refills and is one of my favorite parts. But the low lit ambiance and art murals are always really nice to look at. Their booths are private and roomy, and they have plenty of seating. You order at the counter, but definitely still get full service here.

Today, that change has become permanent, with the restaurant now operating as Yuchan Shokudo. Even during the transition, the food absolutely hit. I especially loved the cozy red-and-black interior, which gave off warm izakaya vibes. - Tan Tan Ramen -- rich and creamy broth with Japanese noodles, tender chashu, minced chicken, menma, bean sprouts, and green onions; packed with protein and full-bodied flavor - Tokyo Shoyu Ramen -- noodles in a lighter chicken bone and fish shoyu broth, topped with pork belly, half a tamago egg, fish cake, menma, bean sprouts, and green onions; lighter but still satisfying, though I wished there was a bit more pork belly Located in the heart of downtown Davis, it's an easy walk from campus. Prices have risen over the years, so it feels more like an occasional treat than a casual student meal these days. We also ordered a side of sake to complement our ramen. Since then, the former sake bar has been removed as part of the restaurant's evolution into a full-fledged shokudo concept. Service was friendly, our food arrived promptly, and the overall ambience struck a nice balance between a cozy ramen shop and a casual Japanese eatery.

CONS: - prices are a little high - the wait for the food was oddly long considering how few customers were inside/not busy it looked - the meat was not cut; the chicken arrived as giant slabs (not a huge deal, but it's just a detail I noticed because other places usually cut it before serving) Overall the cons are small things compared to the pros. The food was so delicious that my group all ate beyond what our stomachs were capable of eating because we wanted to eat more! Tim's is a great place to invest a little more for a big plate, and you'd have leftovers to eat for another meal (or two).

My Burma downtown is doing the most in the best way--great location, solid vibes, and service that actually feels like they want you there (rare, honestly). Everything is super veg-friendly with plenty of swaps and mods, which I always appreciate because some places act like removing meat is a personal insult. Fun fact: Burmese cuisine is one of the only Southeast Asian cuisines where fermented tea leaves (yes, edible tea salad energy) are a legit staple. We got the diamond tier this time instead of gold, and that opened up appetizers. This was perfect for my two young kids who love chicken karaage and gyoza. The appetizers are made fresh and take a minute to come out, but it's worth it. I guess if I had to make a recommendation here, it is that the little cup of sauce that is built into the plate just kind of spills onto the food. Not the end of the world, but maybe a small ramekin would be better. Anyway, gyoza, karaage, fried tofu, shrimp tempura, fish balls with roe, we're all great. There are drinks that come with the diamond tier can sodas, lychee lemonade, Thai tea, and more. The service was awesome this time. The severs were very attentive and working hard. All of our needs were taken care of really quickly and shabu ingredients came from the back at lightning speed. They also had more ice cream flavors this time, which my kids loved (uh hello, cookies and cream is the best). Ambiance is always nice there. I know that when I'm eating at a hotpot place I'm always looking for good AC when inside since the boiling broths can make things uncomfortable, especially in a Davis summer. This place has a nice cool dining room, which I appreciate. I don't toss around 5 stars, but this was definitely a wonderful experience worthy of such. Thanks again for the hospitality!
