We went for lunch on a brisk Sunday afternoon and decided to go for the buffet since it was such a good price at $17.99 and more worth it than ordering a la carte. There was a pretty good variety of curries (butter chicken, eggplant, lentil, kofta), vegetable and chicken biryani, tandoori chicken, naan, and desserts (gulab jamun [sweet syrup donuts] and kheer [sweet cardamom rice pudding]). My favorite was the butter chicken and naan. We also tried the mango lassi- it tasted like fresh mango and wasnt too heavy. The owners are a couple who are very nice. They got waters to us and a basket of naan right after being seated. They're also very attentive and would keep an eye on the buffet. Whenever one of the dishes was running low they'd disappear into the kitchen and come back with a fresh batch. I would come back again especially on a cold day. We enjoyed the food a lot! Can't find a deal like this elsewhere in the bay where we were visiting from.

I had ordered goat biriyani with thali for delivery. It was a lot of food! It was my food for the day and I was STUFFED. The goat biriyani was moist with tender chunks of meat, nicely flavored but nothing memorable. I got "spicy" out of mild, spicy, and very spicy, and it was about a 5/10 heat (I am East and SE Asian). The yogurt (raita) it came with complimented it well. The thali came with 2 pieces of naan, a lentil soup (sambar), curry of the day, and lentil sauce (daal), as well as a desert of milk and rice (kheer). The curry was rich and sweet with sugary pops from the peas and was my favorite. The rest was nice too. However, the naan was a little cakey/spongey instead of stretchy or fluffy. I went once in person, and the atmosphere is a little too quiet and dark to feel comfortable talking loudly.

We love this restaurant. Family owned and operated, warmest folks ever. The food is the absolute best I've had ever. Obviously we eat vegan/ plant based and the options are abundant. Back a few years ago the same amazing family had a midtown location. Walking distance from my home. So needless to say we would frequently visit. As we must commute to Davis to visit, we absolutely will if we want the best Vegan Indian food.

After a business trip to Raleigh, North Carolina, my husband raved about the tandoori chicken he had there. I suggested that we try the Indian restaurants here in Davis. For his birthday I took him to Preethi. He ordered the tandoori chicken. He thought it was very good but not on the level as that remembered dinner. We started our meal by sharing an order of samosas. Served with two dipping sauces, they were crispy on the outside but a bit mushy on the inside. They did have great flavor. For our entrees, we both ordered the thali version. My entree was gongora chicken. I had never had that dish before anywhere. I really liked the flavors. We both had leftovers, especially lots of pieces of naan. We've been bringing our own containers to restaurants for many years so packed up our own leftovers. I noticed a sign on the door that to reduce waste and be more sustainable, they charge 10 cents for each bag or togo container. I commend them for that. We made use of the Yelp check-in special of 50% off the second entree. I'm not sure if that was a reason, but when I pulled out my credit card to pay the bill I was told cash only. Luckily I did have enough cash to cover the bill and leave a tip. I did need to then go to an ATM to restock the cash in my wallet.

    Sauces,

First time eating here. Very good lunch buffet. I love Okka Masala and Dal Curry. Different rice option and Nan is excellent with curry lamb.

Top: Butter chicken w/ rice & bottom: Paneer w/ rice & garlic naan.

I always go for the butter chicken, medium spicy, and it is so good. The flavor is rich, perfectly spiced, and just hits every time. I also get their garlic naan, which pairs perfectly with the sauce. I usually end up spending around 24 dollars when I add extra rice and garlic naan to the butter chicken, but honestly, it is so worth it. The portions are really generous. It is easily the size of two meals in one, so you can definitely save some for the next day. I have not tried any other Indian food spots in Davis, and to be honest, I do not really feel the need to because this place is just that good. Whether I get it to go or sit down with friends and family, the experience is always great. They are very quick with their service, and even when I order ahead, the food is still hot and ready to go when I pick it up. Overall, this is a spot I will keep going back to. Great food, great portions, and always consistent.

Fast forward to now, my husband, sister, and I decided to come here for dinner because yeti restaurant was closed. For those who haven't been in here before, the best way I can describe this restaurant is dark. Paint is dark, booth are dark. Everything is kind of moody and dark. Definitely not my kind of aesthetic, but does that really matter for this restaurant? No. The service is always fine. Staff is always friendly enough and fast. When we got the food, we were pleasantly surprised, like I said before I have only eaten at the buffet here and that was over a decade ago. While we were eating, we noted that we actually enjoyed the flavors here more than we enjoy the flavors at yeti restaurant. Something about the blend of spices just fits our palette more than the other restaurant. We found that there was an adequate amount of food, they didn't skimp out on meats, and we were overall really happy with our meal. Is it the best Indian food I've ever had? No, but it was really good by Davis standards and consider considering that there aren't a ton of Indian places in the Sacramento area. I think this might be our new go to Indian place now! I'm glad I gave this another shot!

Kathmandu Kitchen is named after a city in Nepal, so it should be no surprise the food here is Indian and Nepali. While I can't speak to the flavor or authenticity of their momos or other Nepali staples, their curries are extremely delicious and distinct from other Indian restaurants and recipes I've tried. I think the first thing you might notice is that a lot of their curries have a touch of sweetness, and pretty much all of their curries have a consistent texture. They do an amazing job making each curry silky and rich and flavorful. Every dish tastes fresh and unique in their own spice profiles and marinades. I highly recommend the paneer tikka masala, chicken makhani (very similar/the same as butter chicken I think), kitchen masala, and basil curry. Also, their actual restaurant experience is very nice too. The staff is very courteous and professional. The restaurant is large, vibey, and clean. There are two reasons I don't give Kathmandu a 5 star. The first that both me and partner almost always need to add salt to the dish. I could see why someone might write off Kathmandu if they went a few times and wrote it off because they never tried adding salt to their dish. The second reason is that the spice level isn't as consistent as I'd like. Sometimes, asking for medium spice level results in almost no heat, sometimes it borders on too much. Sometimes getting hot spice level is hot but enjoyable, sometimes it's very hot even for me. Mild is consistent but Id guess that's because they simply don't add extra hot chili powder or something like that. Overall, I highly recommend this spot if you love Indian food and want to try some Nepali spins and flavors.

A friend and I met here for lunch to celebrate her birthday and catch up. We arrived right at opening and had the place to ourselves for about an hour. Guests slowly trickled in closer to the lunch rush, but I was honestly surprised it wasn't packed -- because what they're serving deserves more buzz. We ordered the chicken tikka kebab, butter chicken, methi malai shrimp, and garlic naan. I'll admit, I was skeptical about the chicken tikka since I'm not usually a fan of chicken breast (hello, dryness). But this? Tender, juicy, well-seasoned, and paired beautifully with the mint sauce. A strong start. The butter chicken was slightly different from what I'm used to -- more red orange in color, clearly leaning into a stronger tomato base. Creamy, flavorful, and a bit brighter than the typical richer versions. Different, but still very good. And then... the methi malai shrimp. Wow. Just wow. This was new to me and absolutely the standout. The coconut-based sauce was rich without being heavy, beautifully balanced, and full of flavor. The shrimp were cooked perfectly -- tender, not rubbery, and not curled tight (which usually signals overcooking). This dish alone makes the 30-minute drive worth it. I've since checked menus closer to home hoping to find it elsewhere... no luck. The garlic naan was the perfect companion -- flavorful but not overpowering, ideal for scooping up every last bit of sauce from both dishes. Service deserves its own spotlight. The host/waiter was phenomenal -- attentive without hovering. Water glasses stayed filled, he checked in just enough, and at one point mentioned he didn't want to interrupt because it looked like we were deep in conversation. That level of awareness? Appreciated. Smaller, intimate setting. Thoughtful service. Well-executed food. If you're in Vacaville and craving Indian food, give this place a try. In my opinion, it absolutely holds its own -- and maybe even edges out the more "popular" spot in town. And yes, I'll be back for that methi malai shrimp.

Even though they gave us the lunch menu, we went à la carte. Ordered: tandoori chicken, butter chicken, coconut shrimp, butter naan, and rice -- all medium spice where applicable. The tandoori chicken was tender and well seasoned -- no dry chicken nonsense here. The butter chicken was exactly what you want it to be: rich, creamy, tomato-forward, and comforting. But the one that caught me off guard a bit was the coconut shrimp -- creamy, slightly sweet, and a little more mild than "medium" heat, probably because of the coconut milk, but still really good. And listen... the butter naan? Fresh, warm, and absolutely necessary. Both the butter chicken and coconut shrimp were made for dipping. No shame in wiping those plates clean. Service was great. We had a variety of dishes and overall the food was well prepared and tasty, though we all favored some dishes over others. The samosas were excellent - the filling was delicious and pairing it with the two chutneys just elevated it. The only minor complaint is that the samosa wrapper was quite thick and pretty hard/crunchy in places - I think it would be better if the seams were rolled thinner so when they joined up, they wouldn't be too thick. The momos were just okay - I probably wouldn't order those again. The meat filling was tasty, but the momo wrappers were so soggy from steaming that they immediately fell apart. There was also no sauce whereas I'm used to momos being served with a spicy tomato chutney. We ordered multiple main dishes and I won't go into every single one, but each was tasty.
