Been to most Mikuni locations (Sac, EG, Concord, Davis, Folsom, Roseville) at least 4-5 times each and I'd have to say that I was pretty disappointed this time around. Not sure if it was because I ordered takeout, but the food quality was not like how I remembered. This used to be one of my go-to sushi places. I ordered: seaweed salad, 3-pc bbq albacore, zigzag soft shell crab hand roll, unagi sashimi, 1 aburi salmon nigiri, and a side of rice. The portion size of the seaweed salad was pathetic, the rice tasted old, the bbq albacore pieces were smaller than I remembered, and the unagi slices were as thin as 16lb printer paper. The only items I thoroughly enjoyed were the hand roll and salmon nigiri. Pretty disappointed and for those prices?! Will I be back? Probably not. Service ok. Went to Mikuni on a visit to a friend for her dance showcase, and honestly, this meal ended up being pretty disappointing We wanted something a little nicer, and since my friends hadn't tried Mikuni before, we decided to give it a shot. We spent around $35 per person, and for that price, the food felt below average. We started with the chicken karaage, which was probably the first red flag. It was $16, and the portion was shockingly small. There were basically only enough pieces for about two bites per person at a table of five. The edamame was fine, but that's not too hard to get right. The Spicy Tuna roll was the most forgettable. It genuinely was nothing special, and I've had better sushi rolls from grocery stores for less. The Fair Oaks Roll was okay. I guess you can't go wrong with avocados and tempura. The flavors felt muted, and like a lot of the rolls here, it leaned too heavily on sauce. The Michi and Bob's roll was the biggest letdown for me. The tempura shrimp was almost all batter, and I'll admit this is a hot take, but I really do not think cream cheese belongs in sushi. Between the batter and the cream cheese, it felt more like a like an americanize appetizer than a sushi roll. We also got tuna, yellowtail, albacore, and shrimp nigiri. The yellowtail and albacore were actually the best part of the meal for me. Both tasted smooth and relatively fresh. The shrimp nigiri was overcooked and rubbery. The worst piece was the tuna. It tasted noticeably fishy and not very fresh. To Mikuni's credit, the presentation was nice. The rolls looked appealing when they came out. But good presentation can only carry so much when the actual quality doesn't match the price. The service was also just okay. Since we were seated on the patio, it felt like we were forgotten a few times. Felt like the little details were disappointing. The ginger and wasabi looked sloppy on the plate. The ginger was so wet that the liquid ran into the wasabi, and you could see the green coloring in the liquid. It made the whole setup feel a little careless. Overall, I left feeling like Mikuni charges in the mid-range for sushi that's ultimately pretty below average. I've had much better sushi in the Bay Area for the same price or less. If you want sushi in Davis, I'd personally recommend Zen Toro. read more

Stepped into Mikuni today FINALLY during lunch given how close it is to work! It was an extremely beautiful day out today, made my way over for lunch! Was greeted immediately and I chose to sit in the outdoor patio with the wonderful weather! I was greeted by my server whose name is Emily and I will tell you now, she was so sweet and kind while serving me! Lucky if you get her! I got the spicy salmon handroll, I wasn't a fan because I love tuna more and I should just know to stick with tuna. Bbq Albacore just melts in your mouth, and the sushi was good! Was fresh and tasted how it should! I will say lunch was a little pricey from what I normally pay but hey that's expected when dining out for sushi, quality is always gonna cost a little more! We visited Mikuni on a Sunday night. It was pretty busy, but luckily we were seated right away. The service was great. Our server was very friendly and attentive, which definitely added to the experience. We started with the vegetable tempura, which was light, crispy, and enjoyable. The Fair Oaks Roll with panko shrimp with avocado, topped with masago and green onions was fresh, flavorful, and definitely a highlight. Unfortunately, the spicy tuna didn't quite meet expectations. It didn't taste particularly fresh and lacked the punch I was hoping for it was just okay at best. Parking is ok. I was expecting worse, honestly. They have a parking lot within close proximity. The place is busy with lots of people. There's lots of staff that are very attentive. There's lots of menu items and variety to choose from. Party platters, single item hand rolls, nigiri, sushi rolls, sashimi, appetizers, etc. Lots of drink options as well. We opt for the $70 for two which came with two appetizers, two sushi rolls, and a dessert. The Marilyn Monroll had lots of good review so we chose that. I'm also a big fan of unagi, so we opt for the Ninety Nine Roll. Both tasted about the same. Not bad, but not great. The Xango cheesecake was a different take on cheesecake I've never had before. We ordered the garlicky edamame which was really good and and several rolls including the Pimp My Roll, the Tasmanian roll, the Davis roll, the Spicy Tuna roll (which I would have preferred to have a bit more ingredients to compliment the spicy tuna), the Jerry roll, the negihama and the crispy gyoza! The gyoza was a nice complement to the garlicky edamame. Lastly, we ordered the chicken katsu dish. Overall, the food was good and it was delivered quite promptly. I love this place... I've been going for years! I came with a friend and we decided to have a little of everything! They gyoza was good, although cooked a little too much it was dry. The freaky green beans were delicious! I love them and get them almost every time lol. The tempora veggies were good but honestly they hardly put any on the plate not really enough to share. The spicy salmon rolls were just ok, honestly it was too fish I don't think I'd order them again. The pimp my roll was amazing! I forgot how much I enjoy that one! I've been going to Mikuni's for a while now and it seems like the prices keep getting higher but portions keep getting smaller... The service is also not very great. I mostly do online pick up orders and every time I come in to pick up my food it's like the workers are annoyed I have a pick up. Recently, I made an online order for my work lunch, and asked in the comments for some spicy mayo and if possible some chili oil/crisp (like the one on the 911 delux roll). My coworker picked it up and I told her that it was okay if they didn't offer that or if it costs a little extra, I just wanted to ask. She comes back with about a teaspoon of just chili oil (which I can see the confusion on) and says they charged her TWO DOLLARS FOR IT. I didn't mind paying extra, $2 is a bit much, but if it was a "ranch containers" worth of chili oil I'd understand. $2 for a teaspoon of oil???!! The picture is what I received. The cons list just keeps getting larger... not sure if this will be our go-to place anymore. read more

I had the lobster specialty hand roll. It didn't have as much flavor as expected and it felt quite dry as I ate it. I also ordered the Sacramento Roll, which they had to make twice because for some reason the menu doesn't list avocado as an ingredient. Nearly every other roll on the menu indicated whether it had avocado. I don't eat avocado, so it needed to be remade without it. The Sacramento Roll also states "lobster" as an ingredient when it's obviously imitation crab. Their payment terminal wouldn't work with GPay, so I needed to go grab my physical card from the car. A man, I can only assume is the manager, suggested I leave a personal item behind "just in case", implying I would dine and dash. I found it quite rude and insulting. Not my fault your pay terminal doesn't work properly. Oh, and that specialty hand roll is way too expensive ($12.50) for the portion size, quality, and limited flavor. If anyone was scammed, it was me. The restaurant interior is neat and designed well at least. read more

Honestly, this place is so good, hands down 10,000x better than the Concord location. I avoided coming here for a while because my experience in Concord wasn't great, but this location completely changed my mind. From the moment we walked in, the vibe was on point. Wants to be an upscale, trendy sushi restaurant (i.e. Morimoto) but misses on all the key aspects: food, worth, and service. Mixed ambiance. Would not dine here again. Food (3/10) - The food just isn't good here and I'm not really sure why other students say that it is. We got 4 different rolls and the chicken karaage. The chicken karaage was alright; it had a nice crisp and was decently juicy. Now, onto the "stars" of the show; the rolls. The only roll I would consider ordering again (but for $22 probably not) was the incredible roll. It had a nice sweet hint from the sauce on top and it went nicely with some soy sauce. The others were just not good, both in price and taste. I want to emphasize that at times I am willing to sacrifice price if the taste is exceptional but Mikuni lacks both. The first comment I want to make is that there rolls have more cucumber than fish in them. Why am I paying $14 for a tiny portion of salmon and then two chunks of cucumber (referring to the spicy salmon roll). The 911 roll is literally just chili crisp slapped on top of tuna and just MORE cucumber. The chili oil doesn't even really fit with the rest of the roll because 1.) It wasn't evenly spread out amongst the pieces of sushi and 2.) When you eat a bite with the roll, you just get this mouthful of chili crisp. The last roll we got was the Fiesta roll. The cucumber was less bad on this one since there was a decent fish taste but I was still crunching through that cucumber. Service (5/10) - Floor is really disorganized and there are WAYYY too many servers for the restaurant size (counted maybe 7 for the 15-20 tables). Excusable since it was super busy but just wondered if it's like this always. I usually don't like to take it out on servers but I thought the response that he gave to my recommendation question was particularly funny. I asked, "What's your favorite roll on the menu?" and he responds, "Well, my favorite roll isn't on the menu but..." with no indication that we can order it. Incredible roll rec was good though. Food came out relatively quickly. Ambiance (6/10) - Upscale vibe with nice interior decor... but also sports bar TVs with super crowded table? Ambiance isn't a super big factor in this review though but I just thought I'd comment on it. Overall, I just don't think Mikuni is a good Japanese restaurant. In particular, I think they prey on the fact that students aren't super familiar with what good sushi is. Would not dine again; save your money and go elsewhere. read more

You know what you're going to get when you eat at any of the Mikuni's restaurants. Food is amazing! I had the chirashi don with a salmon skin hand roll and BWE had the lunch bento with ginger pork and veggie sushi. Again, food was delicious. Fish is fresh and with a melt in your mouth texture. I took one star off because the service was not so great. I've been here a few times and the service has been the same each time. Menus are given right away, and since I know what I want I leave the menu closed. In fact, all four of us had our menus closed but it took a good 10 to 15 minutes before our waiter came back to take our order. After our food came, I asked for extra ginger and wasabi and our waiter forgot to bring it until I asked for it a third time. I wish I could give five stars but the service prevents that. read more

Well, I walked in and hadn't ever been to this particular restaurant; I decided to try it due to family and friends' recommendations while watching a baseball game in Davis at the Little League field. They were SO RIGHT! The ambiance was nice and bustily while being welcoming as soon as I entered--I was able to be seated at the sushi bar immediately. Just good timing combined with excellent staff ensuring nice rotation of customers and clean tables, etc. I was greeted by Cai. He was personable while being timely and professional. Cai ensured that the service was so natural and didn't hover. The sushi chef was kind and thoughtful. Out of all the locations, Mikuni Davis was my first Mikuni experience. The interior is modern and spacious, food is good, and service was quick. Mikuni is a roll-forward restaurant so come here if you're looking for saucy rolls (our favorites were the zig zag hand roll and Kaiser roll). There are a lot of tables inside as well as a bar section and seating in front of the chefs making the sushi. I got the iron chef roll and really liked the variety of sushi I got in it. We have a small collection of Mikuni swag and couple 5 pound bags of sushi rice from the birthday wheel over the years. It's not a quiet place. If you're a dog owner, you may want to be cautious about bringing your pet to this location. My family and I asked the hostess if pets were allowed on the patio, and we were told yes. After being seated, I asked our server if there was anything appropriate to order for our dog. The server, who was friendly and helpful, suggested the grilled chicken skewers without sauce, noting that other guests had ordered the same for their pets. We placed the order based on this recommendation. When the food arrived and I was about to hand-feed a piece to my dog, the manager came outside and told us that pets are not allowed to have any ordered food or eat from the restaurant's plates. To clarify, I had no intention of letting my dog eat off the restaurant's dishes--only hand-feeding him. Still, the message completely contradicted what both the hostess and server had just told us. The server apologized for the confusion, but the inconsistency left us uncomfortable and we decided to leave. While I understand if there is a company policy about pets and food, it does not appear to be communicated clearly or enforced consistently at this location. We've been longtime Makuni customers and will continue to enjoy other locations, but unfortunately we won't be returning to this one. read more

Heard a lot about and was recommended this place as being one of the best Japanese restaurants in the area so was super excited to try it. Went at around 6:30 pm on a Saturday and we were able to get a seat immediately inside. The interior is super modern and there is a lot of indoor and outdoor seating. Our server was nice, came to chat with us throughout the meal and she did forget one of the items we ordered but helped us resolve that so quickly and had them rush it for us which I greatly appreciated. Hamachi Aburi 1 - This was my favorite item that I tried. It was everything I wanted and expected: it was sour, sweet and the slight char on the fish was perfect. The combination of flavors was amazing and really complimented each other. Hotate (Scallop) - It was soft and I liked the texture but it tasted a little fishy. Fresh Roll - The salmon was very fresh and had a nice bite to it being in the center and layered on the top of the roll. Didn't have too many ingredients in the roll but it really highlighted their freshness and the ponzu it came with added a more sour salty taste. Everyone else at my table ordered the chef's sashimi platter or the chirashi bowl. What stood out the most for us was how fresh and large of a portion the fish was in every dish.
