Out of all the locations, Mikuni Davis was my first Mikuni experience. The interior is modern and spacious, food is good, and service was quick. Mikuni is a roll-forward restaurant so come here if you're looking for saucy rolls (our favorites were the zig zag hand roll and Kaiser roll). I did think the prices were way too high for the portions, so I would come back to Mikuni for the experience and not for value. read more

I'd heard great things about this restaurant for some time, and was happy to finally try it! My party and I shared the chicken karaage to start, then some of the rolls. I enjoyed the DMC Roll and the Mafia Roll. To drink we had the Lychee Shock and the Mojito, both of which had the perfect amount of strength and flavor. Heard a lot about and was recommended this place as being one of the best Japanese restaurants in the area so was super excited to try it. Went at around 6:30 pm on a Saturday and we were able to get a seat immediately inside. The interior is super modern and there is a lot of indoor and outdoor seating. Our server was nice, came to chat with us throughout the meal and she did forget one of the items we ordered but helped us resolve that so quickly and had them rush it for us which I greatly appreciated. Hamachi Aburi 1 - This was my favorite item that I tried. It was everything I wanted and expected: it was sour, sweet and the slight char on the fish was perfect. The combination of flavors was amazing and really complimented each other. Hotate (Scallop) - It was soft and I liked the texture but it tasted a little fishy. Fresh Roll - The salmon was very fresh and had a nice bite to it being in the center and layered on the top of the roll. Didn't have too many ingredients in the roll but it really highlighted their freshness and the ponzu it came with added a more sour salty taste. Everyone else at my table ordered the chef's sashimi platter or the chirashi bowl. What stood out the most for us was how fresh and large of a portion the fish was in every dish. There are a lot of tables inside as well as a bar section and seating in front of the chefs making the sushi. I got the iron chef roll and really liked the variety of sushi I got in it. I've been going to Mikuni's for a while now and it seems like the prices keep getting higher but portions keep getting smaller... The service is also not very great. I mostly do online pick up orders and every time I come in to pick up my food it's like the workers are annoyed I have a pick up. Recently, I made an online order for my work lunch, and asked in the comments for some spicy mayo and if possible some chili oil/crisp (like the one on the 911 delux roll). My coworker picked it up and I told her that it was okay if they didn't offer that or if it costs a little extra, I just wanted to ask. She comes back with about a teaspoon of just chili oil (which I can see the confusion on) and says they charged her TWO DOLLARS FOR IT. I didn't mind paying extra, $2 is a bit much, but if it was a "ranch containers" worth of chili oil I'd understand. $2 for a teaspoon of oil???!! The picture is what I received. The cons list just keeps getting larger... not sure if this will be our go-to place anymore. read more

There are rolls galore and cooked entries on the menu as well. The party platters are great for functions and easy entertaining at home. We have a small collection of Mikuni swag and couple 5 pound bags of sushi rice from the birthday wheel over the years. It's not a quiet place. If you're a dog owner, you may want to be cautious about bringing your pet to this location. My family and I asked the hostess if pets were allowed on the patio, and we were told yes. After being seated, I asked our server if there was anything appropriate to order for our dog. The server, who was friendly and helpful, suggested the grilled chicken skewers without sauce, noting that other guests had ordered the same for their pets. We placed the order based on this recommendation. When the food arrived and I was about to hand-feed a piece to my dog, the manager came outside and told us that pets are not allowed to have any ordered food or eat from the restaurant's plates. To clarify, I had no intention of letting my dog eat off the restaurant's dishes--only hand-feeding him. Still, the message completely contradicted what both the hostess and server had just told us. The server apologized for the confusion, but the inconsistency left us uncomfortable and we decided to leave. While I understand if there is a company policy about pets and food, it does not appear to be communicated clearly or enforced consistently at this location. We've been longtime Makuni customers and will continue to enjoy other locations, but unfortunately we won't be returning to this one. read more

I had the lobster specialty hand roll. It didn't have as much flavor as expected and it felt quite dry as I ate it. I also ordered the Sacramento Roll, which they had to make twice because for some reason the menu doesn't list avocado as an ingredient. Nearly every other roll on the menu indicated whether it had avocado. I don't eat avocado, so it needed to be remade without it. The Sacramento Roll also states "lobster" as an ingredient when it's obviously imitation crab. Their payment terminal wouldn't work with GPay, so I needed to go grab my physical card from the car. A man, I can only assume is the manager, suggested I leave a personal item behind "just in case", implying I would dine and dash. I found it quite rude and insulting. Not my fault your pay terminal doesn't work properly. Oh, and that specialty hand roll is way too expensive ($12.50) for the portion size, quality, and limited flavor. We generally go to "I love sushi" for the expected flavors for a reasonable price, but the place was closed at the time we needed sushi, so we went with Mikuni knowing that the price will be a bit higher, portions smaller, but solid quality and taste. Mikuni's is one of my favorite sushi restaurants to go to locally. There is a large food selection so you are bound to find something you like. Mikuni's tends to get packed and they don't take reservations, so I would definitely recommend going on a weekday or showing up a little bit earlier before the dinner rush on weekends. There is plenty of seating inside, outside, and at the sushi bar. The only reason why I give four stars is because the service can be a little bit slow sometimes, which can be nice if you're okay with sitting and chatting for a bit. read more

They have a lot of options but I don't think they were all necessarily sushi. Ordered the freaky edamame which is just their version of spicy garlic edamame. Since then we have been back usually for happy house 2-5pm Monday to Friday dine in only. There's a decent selection on the happy hour menu. Our go toos are zigzag shrimp handroll, Spicy scallop handroll, karaage chicken nuggets, iron chef roll, yuzu Calamari, tuna sliders, Annie roll. They staff there is very friendly and very attentive to their customers. I love their Japanese old fashion and the lycee shockers is another great drink. My husband and I were in town for a photoshoot and searched for a sushi place nearby, I am so glad this place is what was recommended. We were greeted right when we walked in and were seated immediately. Our server was Madison, and she was so wonderful. We ordered the Edamame with the Freaky seasoning, wow! I am not sure how so much seasoning works, but it totally does! The Flaming Shrooms were sooooo delicious! I would have been down to eat three orders of just those. The Sake-Q was such a fresh tasting roll. I am a big fan of cucumber wrapped rolls, this one did not disappoint. The 3pcs Kaizen Oysters with Ponzu were really tasty. I did not taste any sand or shell when eating the oysters which I appreciated. The Yuzu Calamari was some of the best breaded calamari I have ever had. The breading was so lite and didn't overpower the taste of the calamari at all. The bathrooms were clean and nice. The restuarant felt lively. Surprisingly Davis has a handful of sushi restaurants in the city, but we decided to go to the fanciest one. I came here on a random weekend and it was still packed. The sushi here is pretty pricey, but the $65 for two was worth it. This deal comes with one appetizer, one entree, two sushi rolls, and one dessert. Also if you sit at the sushi bar, you'll receive a free edamame Flaming shrooms (4/5): This is a tempura mushroom stuffed with crab, cream cheese, jalapeños, and other garments. It was a really great appetizer to share since there was so much flavor and the mushrooms was pretty big. Musolino Pasta (5/5): This was the most worth and tastiest dish in this deal. It's the most expensive item available that will make you leave full, so I recommend you taking it if you do the deal. It's a stir fry udon sautéed in olive oil and garlic. It also includes large and generous amounts of prawns, mushrooms, and onions. Marilyn Monroll (4/5): The scallop on this roll was very fresh for Davis, but the roll was very small. It was a bit underwhelming for me. Fresh roll (4/5): The salmon was fresh, but the size of the roll was underwhelming for me. Xango Cheesecake (5/5): This mango cheesecake was excellent and unique to try. Great way to end the meal! This place is a bit pricey, but I really like the deal. Came here on lunch when we were attending a conference at the SAFE Credit Union convention center. We came with 15, and did not have a reservation. It was 11:30, and not too many people were there yet but they did start to come in as we waited for our table. It took them about twenty minutes to seat us which was okay because we had an hour and a half for lunch. Everyone ordered different things and everyone said all the food was fantastic! I had a house salad, miso soup, and the Kaiser roll. The salad and soul were great, but I will say the miso soup was lukewarm so that's something to be improved upon because we all felt that way about it. The Kaiser roll was absolutely delicious. It was really large which I wasn't expecting, but the flavors were very pleasing. Our waitress was super nice and did a great job remembering everyone's food abs checking in with those whose orders took a little longer. All in all, a great visit. Will be back! read more

In my humble opinion. A MUST READ.... We were visiting Davis this past weekend. We happened to find this Restaurant. It looked beautiful for the outside and was packed in the inside. So we decided to give it a try. It was dinner time and we were hungry. We love Japanese Food and frequent so many amazing places in the Bay. This place looked like it was going to be amazing. We were settled within 5 minutes. The service was great, very friendly. We were giving the menu and the first thing we noticed. The menu was huge, bigger most of the Japanese restaurants we've been to anywhere. Wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing. But we picked several items that we love to eat. Now this is where the problems in my opinion started. 1. When our sushi arrived. Right off the bat. The rice used for the sushi, was off. Zero flavor, didn't stick together and the wrong type of rice for sushi. 2. The sushi were all different sizes and shapes. What irqn by that. The portions were off. It couldn't hold together and tasted like it was from a premade pack from a grocery store. 3. We ordered a large Sashimi platter. When it arrived. The portions were perfect for a baby. Who ever cut the piece must be blind. The cuts were all over the place. Different sizes, not fit for even a beginner sushi chef. 4. I ordered the Sesame Chicken. When it arrived I was puzzled. It was a thin piece of breat, lightly battered. With absolutely zero and I mean zero flavor. It was topped with some kind of basic teriyaki sauce or maybe unagi sauce. Sprinkled with sesame seeds. Nothing remotely close to Sesame Chicken. The chicken was dryer thn the Sahara. Never in my life have I had something like that. If Applebee's made a Sesame Chicken. I would assume, it would be exactly like that. All that and it cost us $180. Which is ridiculous. If I were you. Just pick up some sushi at 7/11. Not only would it be cheaper. But there is a high probability. It would taste better.... In my humble opinion. I gave this place 2 starts. 1 for the atmosphere and 1 for the service. That's all this place deserves. Not sure why I keep coming back to this location. It doesn't do the brand justice - food is Mikuni quality but service is sub-par. There is always a wait for a table and acoustics are terrible. The noise level is not conducive to conversation when you have to shout across the table to be heard by your dining companions. The environment is frenetic and rushed without delivering on service. The parking is in the back of the complex and a bit far for disabled persons to get to the front door of the restaurant. The bartender was very efficient in serving up drinks, water and an appetizer of tempura shrimp while we waited for our table. They won't transfer your bar tab to your table so you have to pay before being seated at your table. Never been to a restaurant with a bar that does that. When we got to our table, the food we ordered came out quickly from the kitchen but we didn't have any plates, ginger nor wasabi for our sushi. We had to wait quite a while to flag down the hostess who kindly brought us plates to eat the food they had served to our table. The dinner for two at $70 is still a deal although the sushi rolls they serve are smaller than the standard size when ordering off the menu. It comes with one appetizer, one entree and two rolls as well as choice of dessert to share. We would have gone elsewhere in town except the smaller locations downtown for sushi were already booked at the time we wanted to eat. I'd rather wait or drive to Sacramento next time I'm in the mood for sushi. Mikuni should do better, especially in such a well-established location. read more

Wow- this is one of those places where everything is good despite such a big menu. Started with a few things that caught my eye. Tuna sliders with a fried scallop on top (5/5), 4 pieces of Toro Tuna belly, and some edamame. The three of us got 3 rolls after that and green tea. Our server was attentive -and for how busy it was I ordered some bites a little worried how long to get our food- and those plates came in good time while we read the lengthy menu and hard to choose rolls. It is so busy that there is not someone consciously walking around refilling waters , which is a big deal for my husband's experience. I was able flag someone down. We were warned of waiting up to an hour after arriving to get a table on a Friday, but it really only took just over 20 minutes. We scored one of the many cozy booths which I think added to the comfort of being there and eating such delicious food. The room was crowded and a bit loud but tidy and medium loud. I think being at the window in a booth tamped the sound down a bit. Our main rolls arrived after everyone was super happy with our starters. After that another surprise starter arrived- Flaming Shrooms- this looked like Agedashi tofu but was a creamy bite of cap mushroom of some type and crab mix and panko crusted and fried into a ball almost like an Arancini Ball- so surprisingly delicious My Daughter wanted her own Fair Oaks Roll which is a classic combination. I was looking for something different- and lighter, I went with the Fiesta Roll which was perfect for all that I already had. But one more roll was coming for my husband and it was the DMC roll with lobster ! When you see this roll- it is impossible to not try one bite. Or two!
