I stayed here a year ago and had a really nice time. Hostel experience is different than any other accommodations. I love staying in hostels when the opportunity arises. I heard about this hostel and had planned a day in Eugene around wanting to stay here. There is no shortage of things to do in the area. I went hiking along highway 58, attended the mushroom festival, a death cafe, ecstatic dance and exploded the rose garden. If you're looking for things to do there was a calendar of local events that the staff had put together. This was how I found the death cafe. Everyone at the hostel was very respectful and helpful. I got a great nights rest. I loved getting to stay here and hope to stay again. read more

I've stayed here several times, and it has steadily been getting more and more expensive, and less and less friendly. I recently booked a private room with a full bed, upon arrival, I was put into a room with bunk beds. I showed the lady at the front desk that my reservation was for a room with a full bed and that the photos on the website showed the same. She explained that they had recently renovated the room, and the website must not be updated yet. She had another room she could put me in with a full bed, but would charge me extra for that. The bunk beds have these small wooden shelves with sharp corners (see photos). I banged into them on a couple of occasions, though luckily not hard enough to cause injury. *** NOTE TO OWNERS: These are dangerous and you will end up with some injured patrons if you leave them. The pure apathy with regards to my room situation (which was an issue caused by mistakes on their website) was the final straw. read more

I was traveling on a MAJOR budget and this was the best bang for your buck when comparing the amenities and general location. I stayed for 4 days and 3 nights in a private room for some perspective on this review. AMENITIES - The free breakfast that is served in the mornings was SUPER helpful. Many AirBnB's don't offer free breakfast or even a kitchen, but this hostel does, and to top it off breakfast is served from the early morning to 10:45am, meaning you can sleep in til 10am and still have a complimentary breakfast. While I only had toast with jam topped with banana slices with a cup of coffee, it was more than enough to get my day started and save money that could now be spent towards lunch and dinner. If you really really really wanted to be budget friendly, you could walk 3-5 minutes down to a local grocery store and buy eggs and other breakfast foods as their kitchen is open to use as needed. LOCATION - What was perfect about the hostel is that it's within 5 minutes of a PeaceHealth Rides Social Bikes rack. I was able to skip multiple $8 to $12 Uber rides to Downtown Eugene by purchasing a monthly pass for $15 allowing me to get a free hour of biking per day (after the hour it is 10 cents per minute billed by the minute). I was able to explore so much of the downtown areas since the road is mostly flat and easy to ride, and with dozens and dozens of Social Bike racks placed at key areas of the city, it was a huge no brainer when it came down to costs. I easily could've used Uber for the 8 trips around town and spent $10 on each drive but I saved so much in just using the bikes. The Hostel is also located within 5 minutes walking distance from Slice Pizzeria, Willamette Artisan Pizza (literally right next door), a few bars and wineries, and a few Japanese and Chinese cuisine places. You can easily walk down to Slice to grab a bite and watch the nightly karaoke in their outside patio, have some Sake at Izakaya Meiji Co. and walk back to the hostel and enjoy the incredibly cozy atmosphere of the hostel. SERVICE - The owner was kind, welcoming and accommodating! I'm honestly in disbelief that some of the 1 Star reviews were mostly on the attitude of the owner. We had a good few conversations but most of my time in Eugene was spent exploring the city. I briefly ran into the other staff but they were mostly reserved and kept to themselves which is totally fine. OVERALL - Great location, great for your budget, book on their website! Within 5 minute walking distance of a pizza and arcade bar, sushi, thai, art exhibits, and plenty of thriving local businesses scattered all throughout the neighborhood. This place is a hidden gem in the Whiteaker (old neighborhood in Eugene , Or), it is the Soul of Eugene. The atmosphere and ambiance is unparalleled, as I am writing this a punk cover band is playing down the street, the streets are full of people who are looking at different venues. I booked the Captain's room for myself and my husband. After a change of plans, my son and husband ended up going. I was not sure my son would like this place. He ended up loving it. He wants to go back. His favorite part was waking up to guitar music. He took a lot of pictures of strangers, which he has never done before, It had a very positive influence on him. What started out as a potentially terrible time turned out to be a 5-star visit, thanks to Mac and his efforts to make things right. My partner and I were on a long road trip up to Eugene to go to the Oregon Country Fair, we got in later than expected, and there had apparently been some kind of mix-up with our reservation. Initially, it seemed like we weren't going to have a room for the night (but we would have a bed!), and needless to say, my partner and I were more than a bit upset about this. Mac picked up on that and we butted heads a little over the situation. Regardless, an hour later, he had worked something out so that we would have our own room (as we had reserved) plus, our own bathroom! The next day, Mac was kind enough to let us use his space in the fridge as it was full, and he was very gracious during the rest of our visit. The breakfast set up is great as well! Bananas, apples, pancake mix, Nutella, I mean, come on. It was perfect before a long day at the Fair. All in all, what could have been a terrible visit was saved by excellent customer service, patience on both of our parts, and a willingness to make things right. I love this place. If we can plan it right, we try to stay here on our way from Sacramento to Portland as often as possible. It's the perfect crash pad in a lovely town. Great brewery and snackeries within walking distance. Very hippie friendly. I can't wait to get on that skillet and flip a few pancakes in the morning. read more

I stayed here in August of 17 for 4 days. The hostel is great but some of the employees are lil bit unsettling. You'll be able to figure out who if you decide to stay here, but when I stayed here I noticed a lot of gossiping from certain employees. More specifically about personal items that people leave in their rooms. I would like to give this place a 5 star review but some of the employees just made me feel concerned. I have a few specific examples, but it I won't bother writing them. I would just stay here and skip the interactions. I went a few months ago for a short trip. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I was disappointed with a few issues that would've required quick fixes and would've made the experience a lot easier. For example, the shower had no shower head which made it very hard and low key wild trying to shower. Also the heater was broken, so it was either super cold or super hot in our room. Such a rad place! This was my first time staying a hostel, so I was a bit skeptical at first. I didn't really know what to expect, but after staying here, I am so down with the idea and the environment. I can see that if you are somewhat introverted or a bit timid, this may not be your most comfortable stay, but it sure will help you break out! The staff greeted me with smiles and they walk you through the rooms and help set u up. Parking-wise, if you're driving a car, there's street parking or u can maybe get a spot in the driveway. I stopped here while on a motorcycle trip and I was able to walk my bike toward the side of house and felt totally safe about it. Alright. So. First off, I do love this place. I really do. When I stay in Eugene I always try to stay there, just because it's so much more fun than a random hotel. And so, in some ways, the things that I love about it are also the things that I am going to call out, but, well, that's just how it is. I love that they employ stoners. There is clearly a need for that, but it does make it difficult if the front desk staff are SO stoned that they are completely unable to do their job. I mean wasted to the degree that they don't know what to do with your credit card. Recommendation: Moderate the degree to which your staff are stoned on the job. The parties, the wasted people in the street, the loud music. All fine from my perspective, I mean, again, to a degree. I was a little concerned that an almost totally comatose guy had wrapped himself around the front wheel of my car (parked on the street), but he seemed cool, and was gone in the morning. Recommendation: Nothing really needed. Presence of random wasted girl hula-hooping outside adds class to any party. WiFi. It doesn't work, probably because a stoned messed with it. Recommendation: Fix the wifi - even if you're stoned, you might want it, if not, it's really useful. read more

Reservation bobble turned us into big fans! Three of us headed down to Black Sheep Gathering this past weekend and opted to stay at the Hostel. Aron had stayed there on his last visit 3 months ago and was sure that it would work for us on this trip. I called and made the arrangements about a month out, three adults staying in 1 room, 2 nights. We arrived on Friday afternoon, and were greeted by Rudholf. Upon seeing three of us he asked "Are all of you staying?" There was a bobble with the reservation you see, and we'd gotten booked into a 2 bed room. "No. we're all staying. " Immediately my thoughts turned to bunking on the floor, it would be like a big sleep over right? Wrong Rudholf had other ideas. He apologized kindle for the error, bumped us up to a bigger space and let us keep the original rate. He bumped us up to "The Loft" a nice little apartment with kitchen, dining table, living area with couch, bathroom and 3 beds in the bedroom. Perfect. Even at the rate of $65 a night that it normally runs it would be a fabulous deal. The kitchen came furnished with pancake makings and coffee, syrup in the fridge and vintage cast iron pans to use. The little sofa in the living room was comfortable, and the living room was rounded out with a VCR and stocked VCR library. All those movies you hate to love where there. Oceans Eleven, Wayne's World, Point Break, Naked Gun, and on and on. The space was cozy and a short walk away from the main hostel, meaning there was no wifi and we didn't really interface with the other guests. The train tracks near by took some getting use to, especially in the middle of the night as they rattled the windows. If you're a light sleeper that may not work for you, but it wasn't an issue for us. In the end, we loved our stay and I can't wait to go back. read more

I hesitated with the stars. I really want to give this place 3 stars, but when I think of the intoxicated staff and the month to month renters, I really do feel 2 is more appropriate. To be fair, we are a family that likes to stay in hostels and this particular place is probably really great if you are 22 or a drifter. There is a bonfire in the backyard and folks are playing bongos, drinking beer and socializing. The monthlies seemed nice, but I felt as though we were invading their space a bit. We were unable to get the family room so my partner slept in the male bunk room. The bathroom was shared with another bunk room and people in various stages of intoxication were coming and going most of the night. This room is by the front door and those that forgot the door code (which does not change on a daily basis) were attempting to gain access until about 2:00 am. One of his roommates seemed to only leave for meals, slept in his clothes with his ancient computer monitor and tapped away on his computer keyboard off/on all night. We were warned about train noises, but we really didn't hear much in the way of trains. On the plus side, the theater/music studio is pretty cool and lends to an alternative gathering space, the rooms were clean, the kitchen well supplied and the location is pretty handy. read more

this place was great! the owner Mac is the nicest hardest working man in the industry. Yet, never too busy to give travel advice to his patrons. The staff is chill and also very knowledgeable about the surrounding area. they have SUPER FAST internet, washer driers, and even guitars laying around in case someone want to play. the house and beds were very clean. they made pancakes and had GREAT French Press bottomless coffee for breakfast... For the price and location this place simply CAN'T BE BEAT! I've stayed in lots of Hostels and I have to say there is an eloquent charm, about this place. =) read more

Best hostel I have stayed in. Very cute and cozy. I stayed in the Captains Quarters because that was the last room available and I booked late. Very pleased. Pretty much had the whole downstairs to myself and the room was decorated with maps along the walls and a cute ship steering wheel thing with a mirror in the center. Seriously, this place is absolutely amazing. I visit Eugene often to see family and used to stay at area hotels. NEVER AGAIN! The staff here, the cleanliness, the other guests... Everything is absolute 10 out of 10. It is in the Whit, which, to some people might be a detriment... I mean in all honestly the Whit is a pretty sketchy neighborhood... But I love it and love the eclectic vibe this scroungey neighborhood lives and breathes. It's not for everyone, but damn it, I love it. Do yourself a favor and experience this place on your next visit to Eugene. You won't regret it. Things to know if you've never stayed in a hostel before: -you most likely will be sharing a room with someone -you most likely will be sharing a bathroom/shower as well -book a private room if you are able to do so -bring your own towel or you may have to pay a fee to use one of their towels ($5) -don't leave any personal belongings behind as they may go missing .... my personal pillow I brought from home and my lemon poo-pouri were missing for approximately 24 hours, but were returned to me Overall, the place is homey and quaint. I scoured Airbnb (where reservations were made) and the reviews her on Yelp to get an idea of what this place was about. My stay here was not horrible, but have since determined that staying in a hostel is not my cup of tea. My two friends and I booked 4 nights here for our trip to Eugene in May. We had never stayed in a hostel before and thought we would give it a try. We came into town around 9pm and were shown to our rooms. We were in the women's dormitory which is at the very top of the 2nd story and has two bunk beds, a restroom, a door leading out to a balcony, and an additional room with a bunk bed. We could tell that one of the top bunks were already spoken for. We figured out where to put our belongings ... there are cubbies to put your luggage in. The opening to the cubby will fit a smaller sized suit case but once inside the cubby, it has quite a bit of additional space. We figured storing belongings was on an honor system and had no clue, and didn't realize until much later that these cubbies are able to be locked, if you bring your own lock. Upon inspecting our sleeping quarters, my friend noticed some white stains on the blanket that was on her bed. She took it down immediately and reported this to the staff member at the check in desk who was on the phone. After we put our belongings away we went out for dinner. We came back around 11pm. As this room is at the very top it was very warm and muggy. Additionally, our new roommate must have been smoking pot on the balcony as our room reeked of pot and the lemon poo-pouri that I left on top of the toilet. I was having problems with my asthma during my stay and had a hard time breathing in this environment. I laid on my bed for about 5 minutes and decided that I had to get out. I grabbed my belongings and left the hostel. I stayed in a very nice room at the nearby Rodeway Inn in a big plush king sized bed for only $53. Our 2nd night we didn't have a roommate and staying at the hostel was just like staying in a hotel, except for the bunk beds. The third night we came back to our room around 2am. Just as we were falling asleep, around 3am the door to the additional room opened with light blaring into our room. The person in the room cracked the door open, then proceeded to rummage through a loud plastic bag. I sat up to see where all the noise was coming from to see this person shoveling chips into her mouth. I laid back down and tried to fall asleep. Shortly thereafter she left and went downstairs. The next morning we woke up to commotion coming from this same person. I think at sometime she had a male in her room and was told that it was not allowed. I got up to get in the shower. When I came out, this person commented how they had been waiting for me to get out of the shower. She took her shower, but there seemed to be more drama coming from her room. Not too sure what was going on there, but it was somewhat of an nuisance. Later than night, my friends and I decided to check out of the hostel and get a room for our last night in Eugene, at the Rodeway Inn. $65 for two super plush Queen beds, no roommates and our own shower/bathroom. read more

Just finished at least my 6th stay here. I have always said, its one of the easiest places to stay in Eugene and it was one of the few places I would take my mom to. And I finally did. What makes me such a fan of this place isnt the fact its clean, comfortable and pretty much central to everything in Eugene. It is the attidude of this place and it is the fact that they will always go out of their way to make you feel like home. Mac and his team want to get to know you, the want to know why you are there and they want to know how they can help. The dog and cat help too. They truley care about the community they make there and they care about the short term and long term relationships with their guests. Stayed here for one night in a private room. It was our first visit to Eugene and we absolutely loved the area around the hostel! It is located in a leafy residential area of town, full of colourful houses and street art. Although it's not an urban area, there are great breweries, bars, and food options all within a few blocks of the hostel. When we arrived, the neighbours were practising music out on the porch, and we were greeted by the welcoming and helpful staff. They were able to recommend some good places to check out nearby. The hostel has a great shared living space and kitchen, and even has a music room if that's your thing. There is a free breakfast, which we didn't have a chance to try so can't comment on. Our room itself was cosy and clean. It opened onto the front porch of the property. It was a little dark and tough to move around with luggage, so may get uncomfortable after a couple nights. The bathroom was shared with a small dorm, but was not too busy and seemed clean. It wasn't the most modern of facilities - would have been nice to have some shampoo, shower gel, towels etc in there, as some other hostels on our trip did. The staff let us park in the driveway, but there is also plenty of street parking and it seemed like a safe area. Definitely recommend checking out Ninkasi Brewing, Hop Valley Brewing, and Sam Bond's Garage right nearby! Great places for a night of fun. read more

Definitely beat spending nights in a hotel alone, met some FOREVER friends who were also traveling alone. Amazing view, great neighborhood. Everyone that was staying there was very nice. Very respectful place, everyone kind of minds their own. In great location, if you stay there you HAVE to try Wandering Goat Coffee in the morning (even tho the amazing Hostel offers coffee and breakfast) and then wine tasting at Oregon Wine Lab (hands down best wine i've had in a long time) then go eat dinner and do a cider flight at WildCraft Cider Works, best cider! it's a dry cider so it's not too sweet, and they're all gluten free! read more

I had never stayed in a hostel before and I'm glad this place was my first experience. To be honest, I knew going in that staying there would not be the most enjoyable experience on my trip...and it wasn't, but the staff made it a lot better than I thought it could be. They were able to accommodate an early arrival for me and even held my luggage after checkout so I could tour Eugene more. When I first walked through the door, the staff knew my name, welcomed me, and got me checked in. They invited me to activities they were having and were as sincere and kind as can be. Yes, the trains were loud. And yes, the couple in the next room getting it on at 3am were annoying, but it's a hostel, not a Hampton. The courtesy of the staff and owner made the experience 5 stars. If you have never stayed in a hostel before, make sure you check your expectations first. Then understand you need to be a good guest to get good guest service. This place feels like staying at a friends house. A very conveniently located friends house too! I stayed in the women's dorm upstairs, which has a bathroom (nice bonus, considering you have to share a unisex bathroom at other hostels) a balcony (so nice!), and 4 beds. My roomies were very nice and polite. I had some of the best sleep of my trip in that upstairs room. The common area does close early, but the space is very inviting. The evening I stayed, some of the guests and staff hung out and played music together. Plenty of parking on the street. But if you're hoofing it, it's within easy walking distance to most of what Eugene can offer. read more

Ok. So the guy who checked us in didn't actually seem stoned (like the other reviewer mentioned)-- but rather new to the job, and still learning (cc card machine, etc). We were handed a towel and he wasn't sure there were any more clean towels -- but then, "oh yea. there's some out on the back line." So we each got a towel, but no washcloths. As a family of three, we stayed at "the Loft" -- the private room around the corner; it's part of the "Garden" location. Be sure to get the address because the front desk guy's description didn't quite cut it; we had to drive up and down the street a couple of times, and called him back, and he still didn't know the address, but just kept trying to describe it. We finally found it. There was a problem with the key and had to get another staff member to correct it. The Loft was ok -- definitely a good value for the price. When we first walked in, there was a certain odor (mustiness?) and so I immediately opened all the windows. I did not care for the looks of the shower and chose not to use it, although my husband and son both did. The double (or queen?) bed was waaaaaay too soft, and definitely needs to be replaced. The twin was nice & firm and had nice sheets. I did not care for the sheets on the double/queen -- some type of synthetic fabric, and also a bit musty-smelling. Luckily, I had brought my own blanket and pillow. Also, the couch in living area seemed pretty old and musty. The deck is nice. The people were all nice and very quiet, including the few campers in tents out in the yard. There is a fridge and basic kitchen equipment. Overall, I think we were lucky to get the Loft. We started looking for a room about 4-6 weeks before UofO graduation, but everything was booked. So I suggested we see about the hostel. It is an eclectic, interesting area. And as mentioned by other reviewers, as long as you go with an open mind and a good sense of humor, you will likely enjoy your stay. read more

This hostel is a discriminatory business. My son, who is on medication, and who had stayed at this hostel a few nights ago with no problems, was discriminated against simply because he was looking exhausted from hiking in the cold and takes a prescribed medication that can cause drowsiness. I spoke with the owner regarding my son's condition yet he flat out refused to offer him a room that was available. I will be contacting the better business bureau regarding the discriminating nature of this hostel. If you or anyone you know has a condition which causes them to take a medication that affects them, do NOT try to rent a room here, you will end up feeling excluded and rejected not based on anything you have done, but based on how you look. Apparently unless you are a perfect looking person with no pshysical issues, you will be turned away. Very sad for people really needing affordable housing while traveling in the cold winter. read more

I stayed in the Eugene Whiteaker Hostel for several nights while travelling with a group, and can honestly say I have never been more disgusted with a business. I have stayed in hostels before, so please don't think my negative review reflects being unhappy with hosteling experiences as a whole. The main reasons I couldn't recommend it to anyone were: -There is a dog that lives in the hostel that I was not warned about. As someone with an allergy, this made my stay horribly uncomfortable. I was told the dog stays downstairs in the community areas, not in the dorms, but I was still feeling stuffy all stay. -Other than the owner, the staff seemed... off. There were always a half dozen or so people in their 20s in and around the hostel that were doing work-trade, who were downright unfriendly to those of us who don't fit the Eugene model. All they seemed to do was sit around and get high. -Even though the place was crawling with "staff," the hostel never felt clean: piles of dirt were under my bunk (more than just dust bunnies); the underside of the top bunk was covered in gum; the kitchen was so disgusting it was almost unusable. -Both times I used the kitchen, I saw ants crawling over the counters and in the cupboards. -You can practically taste the smell: imagine a houseful of people trying to cover up the smell of pot by making cabbage soup, then forgetting about it, then trying to cover the smell of burnt cabbage soup by cheap lavender air freshener. -Three of my group members had beer stolen from the community fridge. The owner did reimburse them, but at the time only our group and his staff were staying there. Hmm... -We were told that the hostel locked at night, but the front door was never locked. The stairs to my dorm and the dorm itself didn't even have keyholes, so anyone could have walked in at any point of time. Needless to say, I ended up carting my laptop along with me on our travels, just in case! To be fair, the hostel does have some perks: it's within walking distance of some great Eugene gems, and the owner is a genuinely nice guy who does seem to try to make everyone feel at home. However, I wasn't paying for great conversation -- I wanted a safe place to sleep, and I don't feel that this was it. read more

Let me first say that I wasn't happy with the noise that continue through out the nights while I'd stay at the Whiteaker Hostels. It's not an International Hostel, more of a hostels for homeless people and young runaway if a better description is the title for this place. It's a hipster hostel. On my first day looking for the place I was clearly lost in Eugene until a local resident said that it's on the opposite side of town but also inform me to be extremely careful. She wasn't making things up as I'd walk into the back streets. Once I've arrive there was an open front door was present and no one at the front desk.Of course, I had to look for someone but after checking in, It's a house that was remodel into rooms and I'd say that because my room as bathroom pipes in it. I wasn't told any rules or shown around, so I had to ask for them and show myself around the hostel. I was place in a bulk bed where the head room was so low that I've hit my head a few times on it. They also charge for coffee in the mornings and there is free breakfast but it's just pancakes only. (BUY YOUR OWN FOOD) The room was so cold at night that another roommate and I were figure out that the room had a heater on the wall but soon after the very next day, an employee there just walk right into the room without knocking on the room and started to turn up the volume on his heavy metal music on his device while I was reading and working. Not a very nice customer service if you ask me. I was quite and patient until that same employee told his boss (The owner) that we had the heat on but the heat was turn off for at lease over an 2 hour now and the owner walks right into the room without a knock and say that it's hot in here. How did you know that it was warm in the room? Are we not allow to keep ourselves warm or is it that you can't keep up with the bills? Don't get me wrong now, there was one young ladies that work there was was nice and one other guy but I'm not sure if he was working there or living there. Either ways I was charge twice and notice the credit charge on my citibank notification and told them. At night the noise coming from the people that live there wasn't a very pleasant experience. If you were thinking of doing any laundry, then don't think about it because they will send you 3 blocks away to another place to do your laundry. This isn't a hostel at all more of a shelter if you ask me. I'd stay quite and away until the day of departure. It took about 15-20 minutes to walk from the hostel to the main downtown area to get some real food and drinks and this was everyday for the last four days while I've stay. Once downtown the people were nice but inform me on some history stories on the hostel. It's not somewhere any international visitor should be and they are correct about that. A Hostel should have everything include just like the Hi International Hostel. Shouldn't be able to walk in a unsafe neighborhood to do laundry where there are tons of drugs users and homeless just hanging around. NOT SAFE The day of my departure, I've take my things and got ready and want to get my food from the kitchen and was stop and ask for the key to my room without a thank you. I wasn't too surprise and just exit the place without looking back. If any international visitor that wanted to visit Eugene but also looking for a hostel, then this place isn't for you at all. Great experience, we rented the loft for the night and were shocked at what we got for the price. A whole apartment with full kitchen, spare bed, couch, kitchen table. The place is nice, a little old but exactly what we needed for a night. Met the owner on our way out and him and his big dog Oso were really friendly. Highly recommend. read more

Great customer service! Big thanks to the staff for being incredibly understanding. We were coming into Eugene pretty late from a super long drive, wasn't able to make it in time for check-in so we asked if they can just cancel our reservation. They did it without charging us any cancellation fee. It was very generous of them! I would definitely try to stay at this hostel in the near future if the opportunity comes along again! read more

This was a great place to spend an evening. They even have room for tents in the back! Staff was very nice and helpful. Guests were also pretty fab. First time staying at this hostel. LOVED IT! I have never experiences such a comfortable bed in a hostel. The blankets were those warm, fuzzy, plushy kind that make it hard to leave you bed but then you are inspired by the thought of warm breakfast and coffee. The shared kitchen was clean and stocked with anything you would need to prepare a meal. The living room was filled with local art and instruments. There was a computer that was free to use. This hostel was really cheap, about $20 a night for a dorm bed. That being said I shouldn't complain too much, but I will a little. The kitchen was infested with fruit flies and I couldn't find a towel to save my life, other than the one I was given for bathing and the sopping wet one behind the toilet for a leak. Eventually this turned our bathroom floor into a big puddle. The WiFi didn't work. The staff was friendly enough and the location was just darling. I was impressed by the Whiteaker Hostel and it's fun and helpful staff. Mac, the owner was both helpful and accommodating, and always took the time to answer any questions I had, or show me where things were. I was traveling through the area on a brewery adventure, and this hostel was in the perfect position to walk to most of them! Ninkasi Brewery is right around the corner, as well as tons of great places to eat. I highly recommend asking any brewery for your Brewery Passport and take full advantage of the Eugene Ale Trail. My favorite aspect about this hostel, other than their great staff, was the music room. Guitars, pianos, and much more are available for the variety of creative souls who travel through. My second favorite is the outdoor seating area that can morph into a movie screen. Honestly, I wont stay anywhere else in Eugene as long as this place is around. You cant beat the price and the location. My room was inexpensive, completely private, and had its own bathroom. I highly recommend the Captains Quarters. Because my trip was a fluid one with no timetable, I had no where I had to be, I ended up staying an entire week, at the hostel. I sampled three different rooms, and each were cozy and comfortable, and featured unique customizations. Don't get me wrong, this is NOT a hotel, its a hostel. It's about making friendships, meeting new people, and learning new things. I met people from all over the world while staying here, and made friendships that I will keep with me forever. Hostel's in my opinion are better then hotels, they allow you to connect with the community and travelers. I HIGHLY Recommend this place to friends and family. read more

I thought I wrote a review of this place back when I stayed here in fall of 2013. I was somewhat horrified by the accommodations when I stayed there then. The bed squeaked pretty loudly, and I felt like I was easily rolling off the bed all night which just slanted to one side, it was so out of shape. I was glad I could lie down inside in safety, and that was my only priority. That's probably why I amended, deleted, or didn't leave a review. I could hear the trains people speak of, it was very loud that night, and could be considered uncomfortable to try to sleep from that factor alone. I had to ask for earplugs which fortunately they had. I was just grateful for a place to stay despite the character of the owner, which seemed bizarre. He asked me the same exact question twice in the morning within the space of a minute that consisted of mostly silence. To be fair, the coffee was good. There is a big sign next to the computer asking for positive Yelp reviews. People were up and down all night going to the bathroom next door and flushing the toilet at intervals of 30 minutes at the least. I would hear walking and people speaking and it sounded almost as if we were in the same room. I didn't know it was possible for even four people to actually go to the bathroom and use it at that interval all night long until four or five in the morning. The owner's demeanor seemed comparable to that of one of the gremlins from The Hunchback, which I noticed when he extended my stay last fall. I was intensely uncomfortable with him when I met him, and about a year later I came back to this hostel because I was in desperate need of a place to stay. That is what is motivating me to write this review now, I think people need to know about this experience because it was so negative for me and reflects so poorly upon the hostel, or at least the spirit of the hostel which is obviously going for psychedelic, accepting, and welcoming. It's actually something else, closer to a paranoid, drugged out and spiritually checked out kind of environment. The owner said I could not stay there because I dared to "spread out my stuff" in one of the common rooms and so couldn't live communally with people. This incident consisted of me looking through some receipts for my ID, and placing my backpack open by my side (in an utterly exhausted state). He seemed to think I would be aware of the schedule of breakfasts at the hostel and was acting like I was being enormously inconsiderate to simply wait outside and talk to him about staying there when he arrived and asked me directly what I wanted. The owner then proceeded to call the police, because I decided to take a much needed moment to sit on his front porch once refused entry into the hostel. I would not patronize this business unless you approve of this cop-calling kind of behavior. I would not rely on this place for long term accommodations or even for a short term stay. I had lost my ID and didn't have anywhere to go, and had stayed there before peacefully but he still refused me accomodations and then called the police when I didn't leave immediately. read more

I came down for The Country Fair. I stayed 3 nights and I had a great time. I loved the Hostel, the location was very cool and arty. I highly recommend Poppas Soul Food restaurant just around the corner. You will also want to take some pictures of the houses on the block as they are all so unique, odd and cool. Everybody was friendly, place was clean, coffee was always hot and ready in the mornings. read more

This is the best hostel so far!!! I've been in a bounch of them and this is the most frendly and charm one. Everybody is super nice and try to feel like you're home. They really know how to make you enjoy the hostels facilities and the city, cos they tell you he best places to go. The spots that local people go to and that are the best. The room was great, the bed was super comfortable and the roomates very funny and friendly. I really enjoyed the stay and is very worth visiting if you are a traveler and you enjoy meetineg nice peolpe. Guitars, great backyard, fuzzball... you can really enjoy your stay!! It is well located in a nice neighbourhood with lots of nice colorful houses. This place is great to stay in. Really nice friendly athmosphere to enjoy!!! read more
