Horrible Service. I chose this place due to the menu since they had gluten free options and for their bourbon list. It was my hubby birthday and for his gift I was treating him to dinner and a 100 glass of Pappy Van winkle Burbon. We were both very excited. We arrived on a weekday last week Thursday at 445pm. The place didn't have the water views it touted which was still ok- as we had spent the day shopping downtown and in the village and we were ready for some drinks and a good meal. Upon entering we saw the bar and majority of the seating is all high table tops and chairs. There was one section of lower tables that just had a party of 4 getting ready to leave. I requested a lower table and was told no even though the whole section was empty. I explained to the hostess that my husband was just injured at work ok his hips and knees and we wouldn't be able to do the high tables at this time. Again she told us we could not sit there as they had reservations. I asked again for every table and she said yes. Then I said when and she told me 630pm. I said so you can't seat us at 445 to eat it's my husbands birthday and we drive here and I was told I didn't need a reservation when I called for a Thursday night. The place was not packed it was pretty empty except for the bar and 2 tables outside. She said we could sit there but we would have to vacate by 6 and be done with dinner. Well it was empty si that shouldn't have been hard to do. She sat us at dirty table for 2 against a wall near the waiter/ waitress station. I tried to flag down a waitress to clean the table and I was ignored as they all stood and talked at the wall behind us. I even asked one to get us our server. I am assuming the hostess told them not to wait on us at 4 waiters standing around and we sat for 15 minutes no lie with no one approaching us. I would have gotten up and asked for the manager any other time but I didn't want to make a stink on my hubby birthday. We waited 20 minutes and walked out. The lost out on a large check as we were planing on 2 $100 drinks and dinner. If this is how they treat people celebrating a special occasion I can't imagine how they are treated on the regular. The floor and tables and seats were dirty and had crumbs on them when it was empty I can't imagine what it's like if it's busy. Glad I didn't check out the bathrooms. read more

Great place! We were in town visiting with friends and hubby managed to get a reservation! We had three little ones with us and they gave us a great table (with lots of room and out of the way). We ordered: - cornbread (definitely get it) - Mac and cheese (note: without the bacon, it tastes just like the kids one) - burger special - chicken with potato salad and coleslaw - kale Caesar salad The salads were amazing... so unexpected. The Engine Room has been my go to Mystic CT restaurant for many years. I have never been disappointed. They have a great selection of craft beers. My wife had the Cobb Salad and I had the Chipotle Chicken sandwich. The Cobb salad is always amazing. The bacon chunks are so delicious and the fried soft boiled egg is just magical. Seems to be a popular place. We had lunch there when it was not busy. I had the May hamburger that was overwhelmed with cheese, you could not taste the meat. The French fries were soggy, someone needs to raise the temperature of the oil they cook the fries in. Nice ambiance with an industrial feel. Very confused by the good reviews, as I had a truly awful experience. It was a very busy night so we sat at the bar. There were literally children belly to the bar sitting -- and at one point, standing -- on stools. A three year old just started screaming and crawling around on the floor behind us while her parents ignored her. Music blaring. People shouting to order drinks over our shoulders. My food (after a 25 minute wait) ranged from cold rice to room temperature tofu that was 75% more deep fried batter than actual tofu, with two pieces of barely cooked broccoli on the side. I kid you not, I have had better meals at my grandmother's retirement home, and that is sadly saying something. All that was missing from the "presentation" was a child's divider plate -- each element seemingly having no relationship to the others, barely touching and resembling something I would have given a 6 year old, picky eater on a day when I was too tired to even pretend to make an effort. As a bonus, when we finally left my ears rang for 15 minutes from the noise level. The bartenders were lovely but you couldn't pay me to go back. There are some really friendly restaurants nearby that serve properly cooked, delicious, comparably priced (oh, and hot) food without toddlers sitting at the bar (we're from California where children are not legally allowed to sit at a bar counter so this was very strange to see). The hush puppies were a bit too crunchy for my liking and I generally like crunchy textures. The rosemary lemon butter was cool but I don't think this is a must do. The chopped salad was surprisingly good and creative. It comes with cornbread croutons and the grilled chicken seemed like their rotisserie. This. Place. Is. GREAT! To start, we arrived around 10:50am on a Saturday, but no matter, they let us in and sat us 10 minutes early! (I'm glad we were early because this place was full in no time for lunch) Our very personable waitress promptly asked us what we'd like to drink, and upon delivering our drinks took our food order. My wife wanted to eat light, so she ordered the mussels (pictured) and I was hungry for a steak (hey, we're on vacation - steak for lunch, why not)?!? The steak frites (also pictured) sounded delicious and boy did this meal deliver! It was a flavor explosion! Upon the food being delivered, and seeing my 'frites' swimming in sauce, I said, "ugh! Soggy fried potatoes! What a dumb way to serve this!!" Turns out; 'the dummy' was me! The steak + the potatoes + the sauce were AMAZING together! Great texture (not soggy); the potatoes are cooked enough, plus the texture of the steak holds up well to the moisture the sauce brings to the bite. I'd happily eat this again! (Not to mention that the steak was cooked perfectly!) Food + 1 mixed drink + tip was ~ $90 (but it was worth it all around) Lastly, the restaurant itself is pretty unassuming - clean, casual dining with a touch of modern rustic, appointed with comfortable seating - I love a good booth table, and they had them here! If you're in Mystic, I definitely recommend coming to the Engine Room a couple of times so that you can experience both their indoor and outdoor dining, in addition to their brunch/ evening menus/ atmospheres. I enjoyed the Maple Sriracha Wings for their great flavor. I actually do not tend to like smoked items, but the smokey ranch it was served with was absolutely delicious and complimented the meal perfectly. I expected the wings to be a crispier but regardless, would order again for their rich flavor. The Engine Room has a great variety of beverages and a super kind wait staff. They had no problem serving us fabulous Bloody Marys at 7:00 PM. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone in the Mystic area! read more

Spent the day in Mystic today, on a day trip from Boston. Stopped into Engine Room for lunch on the recommendation of a friend. The ambiance is terrific, the staff all smiles and super-friendly. Service was fast and attentive to water, drinks, and food. We ordered apps and meals for the three of us. Cowboy Dip was good and spicy, with quite a kick, but a sweetness that was welcome. Delish. Their burgers were great, cooked to order and very tasty, though on the smallish side. We had a Mushroom Mae burger and a Grassfed Summer Burger. The sides we ordered were the macaroni salad and potato salad. Both were VERY good, but both were WAY TOO SALTY. The freshness of the veg and ingredients in those sides was overpowered by the salt. It was difficult to eat them. Half of the added salt would have made them perfect. We also ordered Fish and Chips. For a main, this was really disappointing. The breading was good, crispy and crunchy, but where was the fish? The piece of fish we got was paper thin, and completely vanished inside the crust of the breading. Seasoning was fine, but where's the fish? All in all, we enjoyed our lunch. The waitstaff and atmosphere made it work. A nice place to eat! read more

They have a great beer selection, and some innovative drinks on their menu. Their food selection is well rounded and there's something for everyone. First time in Mystic, CT. Walked 20 minutes with my fiancée to experience the great downtown area of Mystic. Was recommended to stop by Engine Room by our hotel. Customer Service was phenomenal both from the hostess staff and our waitress, Rachel. If you do happen to stop in, the food is fantastic, we definitely recommend the burgers and their fries! I had a "pink" Pinot Grigio and my fiancée had a prosecco for celebration! The only reason for the 4 star rating is because we didn't have time to explore their entire menu start to finish. We sat out in their patio as the space was peaceful and intimate. The inside was boisterous from the bar. Ok, I get it. It's Mystic. We were there the day after Christmas. Engine Room professes to be a good place for burgers, beer, and whiskey. My husband had the whole chicken which was really overcooked. It looked it, too. My son had the Mae burger - cheese and mushrooms were excellent. Burger was overcooked. My fish and chips - one piece was perfect. The other was overcooked. Everyone's French fries were overcooked and inconsistently seasoned. Beer was good. Parking tip: the restaurant has two small lots, one right in front of the restaurant. If they are full and there's no street parking, continue up Church Street to the Catholic Church. Make a donation to support their rebuilding fund - totally nice. Parking at the LAZ lot is really expensive, so do your part to respect the church's hospitality. Given that it is Mystic & it wasn't crazy overpriced, 3 stars. read more

After years of walking past the Engine Room I can finally say now I finally tried it! The vibe is really nice. I enjoyed the ambiance. However on a Saturday afternoon it was extremely busy so our server was all over the place/ nowhere to be found throughout our time there. I ordered their bbq chicken sandwich but asked for no mayo. Apparently that was an issue because my sandwich came back with zero bbq sauce on it... when it was a bbq chicken sandwich. After waiting sometime for my server I decided to ask the (more attentive and nicer) one that the party next to us had and asked for a side of bbq sauce because my bbq chicken sandwich had none on it. He was so nice and was immediately sympathetic and said he would tell my server about the issue. After receiving 2 small cups of bbq sauce (not from our original server) it was clear this sandwich wouldn't be hitting the spot like it should have. What bothered me was the lack of care our actual server had towards my problem. I asked her how my sandwich came without bbq and it wasn't until I prompted the question that she was like "oh I wrote no sauce so that's why." I just was not a fan of this server at all. Overall, Food was decent but price was kind of steep. Other servers were super friendly and nice so maybe if I return I hope I'll get someone different. read more

Unfortunately it was too cool and windy to enjoy the outdoor dining areas-which would have been our preference. While the menu is not extensive, it does seem to have a bit of something for everyone, but we were surprised there are not more seafood options offered. Fresh flowers on the table was a nice touch, but the place was a bit too dark-at least where we were seated. The open concept kitchen with counter seating-which looked like a bar but was not-seemed a tad strange. Draft beer ordered was o.k. We ordered coconut carrot soup (which was very good but lukewarm), Maple Sriracha wings (good, but not even a hint of maple detected), cornbread (very good) and fish and chips with coleslaw (substituted potato salad for fries) was good. Fish tasted fresh and potato salad and coleslaw were generous and most tasty portions. Parking areas are small and cramped and I suppose most park on the adjacent streets.
