Went to Empire on a Sunday night at 6 pm and it was pretty quiet. It's a huge restaurant with lots of great seating, lounge chairs, bar, high tables, booths. It's very upscale and pleasant. Open kitchen so you can watch the chefs work. Our food was good, but our waiter was not. My husband asked for no cilantro on his chicken wings. They came out and he started eating them and into his second wing, a server comes up and tells him that that there is cilantro in the chicken wings and he wants to know if my husband has an allergy. No, it's just a preference, we tell him and there is no need to make a new order. My daughter tells the waiter that she needs gluten free food and he helps her pick out some things. Then after she gets her order, one of the foods on the plate looks like it has gluten and she asks the server if it does. He goes to ask the chef and it turns out that both rolls that she ordered had gluten throughout. Our waiter comes back and we have to firmly ask for the gluten free menu because he only seems to want to suggest a bunch of items from the regular menu without really listening to her. Thankfully, no one had a life threatening allergy at our table, but that was pretty ridiculous. We should have gotten something comped due to the wait for the new gluten free dishes to come out. I'd heard a lot about this place from a friend so I took my sister here as a nice birthday present. First impression: Clean and elegant. Hostess (an attractive blonde) seated us right away and the entire staff was very courteous. The website didn't appear in my google search which was annoying when I was trying to get a number to make reservations...luckily yelp had the number and a link! Valet service is available. Ambience: Some of the reviews I've read here say that the atmosphere is pretentious; I didn't see that during my visit. I wore jeans and a button down shirt; no one batted an eye. Decor was trendy but not gaudy. Light and noise levels were appropriate to carry on conversations. Although I didn't get a chance to visit, the bar and lounge area was sizable and looked like it would be a good time. Seating was not cramped and the tables were nice. However, a restaurant on the pier should have outdoor seat, which Empire is lacking. Service: we received our food in a timely manner. The wait staff was attentive, professional and accommodating. Our waiter, Arsh, took me on a tour of the restaurant and was quite knowledgable about the menu. He helped us pick an appropriate sake from the list. I was impressed with his knowledge about sake. Food: Rangoon! Get the lobster and crab rangoon as an appetizer, it was some of the best I've had; you will definitely not be disappointed. For main courses I recommend the mushu or the rice bites. The only thing better than sushi unlimited Monday at Empire is the cool ambiance that comes with first walking into Empire. I first went to Empire on a suggestion from a friend, and it totally blew away my expectations. I don't spent a ton of time in Seaport, so when I do, I want to make it worth while, which Empire definitely does. Went went on on a Monday, when Empire has their sushi unlimited deal, which is really a great deal (I think its 29 pp). I got 3 rolls and they were amazing. I typically like to stick to the basic sushi rolls when I go out and leave for fancy 15 dollar rolls with a 100 ingredients alone, but the rolls at Empire were super unique and realllllly good. I was really surprised with well all the ingredients of the rolls came together. I also had a Mai Thai in a pineapple that was supposedly meant for two, but so small even a lightweight wouldn't have a problem tackling it on their own. Overall, I really was surprised with how awesome Empire is. The ambiance and decor inside only makes the experience that much better. Yet another Asian fusion joint in Boston. Empire's biggest asset is probably its location and size. Located right on the South Boston waterfront, parking is a breeze. There's ample cheap parking garages/lots as well as street parking on weekday nights. After a meal, you get the privilege of strolling along the lovely boardwalk. The restaurant itself is gigantic! I was seated towards the front, so it wasn't until I walked to the rest room that I realized the scale of the space. It took me a good 5min to just reach the rest room. The decor is nicer than Red Lantern too. Now onto the food. My table ordered the Honey Buns, Pot Stickers, Beef Ribs Mooshu, Sashimi Roll, Tuna Tartare, Tuna Sashimi, and Tuna Sushi. We were also accidentally given a dessert item of 3 green tea ice-cream creme puffs. The honey buns were an app of 2 honey coated steamed buns stuffed with Chinese style sweet BBQ pork. It came with a side of delicious mustard. Overall decent, nothing to call home about. The pot stickers were a let down. Thick chewy pan fried dough surrounded a chunk of flavorless meat. The mooshu was also lackluster, with only a few pieces of meat mixed in with cheap vegetable. The sashimi roll was the star of the night. It consisted of tuna, yellowtail, and salmon rolled up in Vietnamese rice paper. Sooo good! The tuna sashimi and sushi were fresh and delicious too. The sashimi slices were thick, making up for the semi-hefty price tag. Sadly I didn't feel as good about the tuna tartare. It was more like a cucumber tartare with bits of tuna thrown in as an afterthought. The whole thing was then placed in a bowl of soy sauce based dressing that overwhelmed the tartare. The only thing I could taste from this dish was the sauce. All this came up to almost $200 for 2 people. Empire is not for the faint of heart. Decided to eat here based on some local suggestions as well as the ability to make a reservation theory OpenTable. Was the first raw sushi experience for our dining companions. Menu is diverse, and really enjoyed our seats near the open kitchen. Everything we tried was delicious! Our waiter, David, took excellent care of us. He was very knowledgeable and made our sushi novice friends feel very comfortable. Defiantly recommend the Kobe beef nigiri, lobster cupcakes, and lobster roll. One of the best dining experiences this year. Wandered into this gargantuan sized restaurant and lounge with a few friends from work. The place (again) is massive. So are their drinks. Served in a WHOLE watermelon hallowed out and filled with booze. I don't even know where to start with the food so I'll start with the sushi. 1. It was the best I've had in a long time. The yellow fin tuna was amazing. 2. The pot stickers, spicy tuna, and noodle bowls were absolutely amazing. The noodles and pot stickers were cooked perfectly and we actually could see them being hand made via the open kitchen in the center of the restaurant. Lastly I have to mention the service! Our waitress was so attentive. She even brought us an additional sushi entree on the house because it was our first time. This place is huge, definitely best suited to large groups and parties. I came here for a birthday recently and we stayed for dinner and then hung out in the lounge after. Food was mediocre at best but portions are large and they have a big menu to choose from. Service was slow and it was hard to flag down waiters but the food came out relatively quickly after we ordered. Best part is the decor. As for the lounge, if you enjoy getting bumped into multiple times in a night and having other people's drinks spilled all over you, this is the place. Took some clients here for dinner. We sat down in the lounge area for drinks prior to dinner seating. I didn't like the lounge set up at all. The tables were very low and uncomfortable with a dress on. I was forced to sit sideways. The atmosphere was pretty cool, it went well with the whole Asian fusion food. My first time at Empire Restaurant&Lounge. I went there for my friend's bday. We didn't join for diner but showed up for drinks. My friend said diner was delicious and it was about $30/person. The drinks were good but a little bit pricy or $12/drink which seems to be the average in Boston. You can't find parking late at night. They have valet for $16 or you can park at the public parking which seems to cost about the same so you are better off valeting the car. The restaurant is very nice. I didn't expect such a nice place in Southie. It is owned by the same people who own Red Lantern so the restaurant looks very similar to Red Lantern (which I love!!!) My BF ended up ordering tuna tartar ($17) which was delicious!! If you wanna go to Southie but try something different I definitely recommend this place as it's a very nice, sexy restaurant/lounge. AND AND they have a DJ(girl) there!! Also they have a massive open kitchen in the middle of the restaurant which is really cool!! read more

Killer location right near the water in the Seaport, but boy did this place miss the mark. First off, lose the techno/house music bumping through the entire restaurant. You are killing the entire mood of eaters by having this repetitive beat going the entire time. (save it for after 10:00pm perhaps) Second, the menu is WAY to big and doesn't really pack a unique punch. This is basically a slightly more upscale PF Changs (lets be serious, it is). Drinks are ok....nothing to write home about. Pricing is WAYYYYY over priced for the quality you get here. This is basic sushi and basic Asian American cuisine. Absolutely the worst service I have ever had. I am a server myself, so I totally get it being New Year's Eve. However, not only did I wait 40 minutes to get seated for a reservation booked over a month ago, but I watched 3 (6 tops) get sat after walking in 20 minutes after me. Empire is such a unique hot spot in seaport. Fresh, delicious sushi + a great dink menu and a great atmosphere. At night they have a DJ to kick things up a notch. If you are out with the kids or want to have a nice mellow, quite dinner with your parents maybe not the right spot but birthdays, dates, dinner with friends YES Empire is great! I love the Tune Tartare, Shrimp Shumai and most of the sushi rolls. This place is great for groups not inky because of the space and vibe but they have awesome drinks to share. I am more writing the review to share how awesome the atmosphere is at Empire - Went to dinner and drinks with a girl friend on wednesday night ... called to make sure they would be serving a full menu ... called at 9:30pm ... they said yes "kitchen open til 11:30pm ... first time for both of us and since I had heard a few good reviews I was really looking forward to trying - We were STARVING and ready to eat .... we walk in and the decor and atmosphere are incredible - its as though your whisked away to some imaginary dream We are seated immediately and the host was somewhat friendly ... our waiter was nice and came right over to get drink orders but to actually get the glass of wine took what seemed like forever ... over 10 or 15 mins .... the menu is asian fusion and when I say over priced .... the Pad Thai is $22 and is really not that great ...DRY and all I could taste was lemon grass and soy sauce ... we ordered a few sushi rolls to share ... but really over priced ...and an order of the fried rice ... yes a huge portion but it was like $24 .... most entrees are $40 .... crazy ... if it were a 5 star restaurant then I would not mind but this place is many improvements away from receiving any stars from the food world oh and can I mention our waiter told us like 4 times that the kitchen was closing around 11pm .... hey guy we just got our $60 worth of rice and noodles ... stop implying its time to leave .... we still have like 30 mins .. geezzz go for the drinks and sit in the lounge .... or get ready to drop a $100 on what you can get at any corner "asian delight" ... read more

So this was my first time here. Food was good and came out really fast. Quite surprising actually. The Lobster Cupcakes are quite tasty but needs more lobster in it. The single order of Pad Thai was huge. Enough for three-four people. Definitely worth ordering. The drink (I'll explain a little later) was good. Updating my review, since it's been about a year now. I've been here a few more times since my initial review, and my opinion of it has not changed. I came here during hockey season to watch a game with a friend and to enjoy some drinks. It was moderately packed, but still only took a few minutes to grab a drink at the bar. I also came here last weekend, since a nearby bar had a line out the door. It was shoulder to shoulder inside of here, but after some clever maneuvering, my friend and I were able to get to the bar, and had a drink in hand within minutes. This location is one of my go-to places whenever I'm in the city. The drinks are strong and very reasonably priced for an upscale place in Boston. There is no cover (which is a bonus!), and is an easy commute from anywhere in the city. I still can't get over the setup of this location. It is so beautifully decorated, and is a wonderful change of scenery from college bars. They also apparently have a DJ on the weekends, so it was fun to be able to socialize with some good club music in the background. I said I would come back for the food and still haven't...but seeing the individual next to me with a plate of sushi this past weekend has tempted me to come back and give them a shot finally. read more

I have been to empire two times so far. The first time I came on Monday for the unlimited sushi for 25 dollars. This would of been a good deal if the sushi was actually good. We started off with the spicy tuna and spicy salmon and it was awful. Worst sushi I have ever had. It tasted like sushi I would buy at the super market. I am pretty sure the sushi was pre done because the rice is very dry. Our waiter told us to try the hamachi tartar sushi and that was amazing. We got so many orders of that because it was the only roll that was actually edible. The second time I can here was for a birthday. We ordered a bunch of rice, noodle and main dishes. The food was very good and the portions were HUGE. They have an option to get a single size or a large bowl of most things. We got the single size and it was plenty big enough. The service was okay. We went to Empire for the first time because we bought a Gilt City... and it was amazing. A little skeptical after reading the reviews of bad service and subpar food, we had no idea what to expect. Our server (Alexa) was outstanding. Super nice, very knowledgeable and so personable. Since it was our first time there, we weren't sure where to start with the menu and she happily (and patiently) helped us make selections... all of which were outstanding. What did we order? Fried calamari, (delicious) lobster cupcakes (a must have for lobster aficionados), scallion pancakes (strange to order from a sushi restaurant... But soooo good. Light and flaky, not greasy or anything), wagyu from the nigiri plus section, (good, though a little fatty) and the rangoon dessert (sinful... just sinful). Needless to say, sushi eater I am not. I should also mention that the chef sent over an amazing shrimp app because we were celebrating our anniversary. What a nice touch! I have no idea what they were, but they can only be described as bite-sized rolls of deliciousness. We'll definitely be back (and probably order the exact same things... ha!). And when we do, we'll be looking for our girl Alexa. If you're going there for a special occasion, let them know. The lowdown: - The decor is amazing - The bar in the front looks pretty neat - The food is meh and overpriced. - The wine I had was bland and tasted like it'd been open for at least a day or two. We had a special of the night, the lobster "cupcakes" for $26, a glass of Torrontes (white wine) for $12, and Cambodian rice (essentially veggie fried rice as one of us was) for $15. The lobster "cupcakes" were four balls of slightly sticky rice balls that seemed fried outside, and were then topped with lobster, scallop, and uni with some mayo sauce. I felt it was really overpriced for what it was, especially as there was little lobster to be found on the thing and the uni tasted of low quality when I found it hidden between the mayo and rice. The fried rice was a decent portion and not too oily, but expensive for what it was. My wine was very unremarkable, but it was a decent sized pour. I'd definitely come back for a drink, and if this place turns into a nightclub it could be quite fun. The decor reminds me of Hakkasan in Miami Beach, too. read more

After spending a significant amount of money at dinner, we were standing in the foyer when my friend of a minority race was approached and asked for his ID. He gave his valid, in-state ID to the bouncer and without even looking at it, the bouncer said he must follow him outside and then he was denied re-entry. We had caused no scene or did anything to indicate that anyone in our small party should not be inside the restaurant. So, after asking the manager who was working that night the reason the bouncer removed him, she also said we must follow her outside and then closed the door. She could not provide an explanation; her only response was "we can't serve you anymore this evening. our security has asked you to leave" and repeatedly could not provide a reason - because there was no reason. We were then forced to leave and she would not even provide us with her name - I assume because she is aware that this was wrong. This was blatant racism and discrimination. How ironic and embarrassing for employees of a place that promotes itself as a cultural/international restaurant to act in this way. read more

The service, cuisine and atmosphere at Empire are all impeccable. A trendy upscale twist on Asian fusion with a modern, spirited atmosphere is heightened by delicious food and an attentive waitstaff. I've dined here a few times and my expectations have always been exceeded. Our waitress and the manager went above and beyond to ensure a pleasant dining experience. After our steak arrived undercooked, they took it off the bill! Two complimentary appetizers were sent over prior to the mistake. As a group of 5 under-30-year-olds, I was surprised by and appreciative for the exceptional care we received. Some of my top favorites are the potstickers, King Crab rangoons, tuna tartare, Korean rubbed sirloin, sockeye & mango roll, spicy tuna roll, and red dragon roll. The Coco Dojo, Eastern Promises and Opium Dream are among our favorite drinks. Date night on Empire's first Saturday opening a few weeks ago now. And "It's OK" is my response whenever I'm asked about the place. DRINKS: Maybe the bartender is still new and getting used to the cocktails menu but come on, get a heavier hand! Between the two of us we had 3 Mai Tais and 2 Shanghai Dolls and they were so sweet/non-alcoholic, we had to wonder what we were paying for. FOOD: The apps are delicious, you cannot go wrong with Lobster Rangoons, potstickers, etc. And the sushi we ordered was par for the course at a place like this. However, I was underwhelmed at the 24 hour Pho (more like 2 hour, threw it together soup) and would rather pay $10 for an x-large bowl in chinatown at one of the more questionable establishments. DECOR/OVERALL: Great Asian theme going on here, and I love Asian Fusion restaurants so this will be added to the list of fun places to go on a weekend night (scantily clad servers in the lounge, why not?) However, if you really want to enjoy your food and have fun too, my money is on Red Lantern, which is owned by the same people, but has a better vibe and experience. At 10:35pm after ordering dinner and drinks and quietly enjoying our evening we were unexpectedly told to get up off the bar seats, without any prior notice. The bouncer then placed a reserved sign in-front of us. Not understanding what was happening I proceeded to inform the bartender that we would leave upon finishing our drinks, and generously left him an ample tip, although he was unappreciative, disrespectful, unable to comprehend our surprise regarding the situation. As this appears to be the POLICY, then it should be stated to patrons upon entry. Sorry Empire, major fail. OK, read the reviews and had mixed feelings but we decided to try it. Glad we did. First, the reviews are spot on about the inside. Large, plenty of tables, great long bar and seating in front of the cooking station. Lots of options depending upon your mood & needs. Had a bit of a feeling of being in a large NYC or Vegas upscale Asian restaurant. The service was great. Tamara took care of us (went with the misses) and she knows the menu cold. Explained what we were in the mood for and a food allergy (milk). Tamara made some suggestions and we went with them. Made dinner from appetizers. We tried spicy salmon rice bites, shrimp shu mai, a green bean special (with ground meat, chilies, etc..) and Singapore street noodles. We also had a cocktail and beer. So the prices were a bit high but the quality made up for it. Between the awesome service and food, we will be back. read more

The place is huge, with interesting decor throughout. The drinks are very good and a bunch of them are made to share. My group got the Scorpion Bowl that comes in a watermelon. As for service, I've been here three times and only once was the service good. The other two times the waiters were MIA and not very helpful. As for food, it's not much better than your local Asian food takeout place. The first time we were there, a few items we tried were actually really good - worthy of a repeat visit. Our second visit was disappointing, but we visited a third time because we wanted to give it another chance. Still disappointing, so we won't be back for the food. We went to Empire earlier this week and had a great experience. The restaurant itself is very impressive and has an Asian themed decor. The atmosphere in the lounge was very inviting and they had great music playing. The crowd was an upscale, after work crowd along with some fashionable patrons mixed in, typical of the waterfront area on a weeknight. We started with the Emporer's Mule, a refreshing take on a Moscow Mule. The servers couldn't have been nicer and were very knowledgable about the menu, taking the time to answer all our questions and also shared their favorite dishes. A few highlights included the Hawaiian style tuna poke, wagyu beef tartare and the tempura rock shrimp roll, which is not to be missed. The Singapore street noodles were also delicious. Empire has exactly what the Seaport district was missing and think it will be the new Boston hotspot. I am already looking forward to my next visit. read more

Ok, so 7 of us went to celebrate a friends birthday. Festive, colorful and fun yes. I recommend sticking with the lounge and a couple apps by far over a sit down dinner. Not a venue for fine dining - it's clearly more about the atmosphere and that is best in the lounge. That being said the food was better than I expected based on reading prior reviews. Wide selection of Asian themed dishes and apps. most the ones we ordered were just ok. Street noodles were pretty yummy though. The salmon with sticky rice was interesting but a bit "fishy." Nothing wowed. Well that is except for the amazing chocolate macadamia tarte. Service was friendly and upbeat but spotty sooo a low key birthday dinner on a Tuesday night went beyond 3 hours. As a result the "3 hours free validated parking" in the garage vaporized and we were all left with $20 parking bill on top of the $85 meal. Booooooo!!!! BEWARE: no parking discount whatsoever if you exceed 3 hours. All in all it's an interesting Vegas-esque place that is fun for drinks and a few apps with friends. There were 4 of us and over the course of the night we ordered 4 rounds of drinks. Every round we ordered the same exact drinks (beer, wine and 2 mixed drinks) and every time the price was different. Um, what? We sat at the long island bar in the middle and the servers were extremely hard to flag down. When I got one girl's attention she turned to me and said "I'm actually the bartender, but that's ok". What??! The female DJ was awesome and she made me want to get up and dance after all those glasses of wine....however there wasn't much of a dance floor situation happening. Empire has a cool, mature ambiance. I'd agree with other reviewers that it's basically an upscale P.F. Changs. The only reason why I won't give Empire 5 stars is because it is way too pricy. Other than that, I really enjoyed my dinner here. I'm reading all these reviews about terrible service, which is weird because our waiter was friendly, prompt, and accommodating. No service complaints here. We got a bunch of appetizers and most of them were great, juicy, and fresh. The potstickers were my favorite, as they were a nice combination of a crispy outer layer with tender meat inside. The steamed buns were not what I expected them to be-the meat came in doughy pockets rather than a bun, so they got kind of messy (they were decent). The other appetizers we got-beef skewers, wonton curry dip, corn rangoons, and scallion pancakes- were all very tasty. We even got free nigiri! My dessert was decent. I got fried ice cream that had these two huge marshmallows. The vibe in this place is definitely club/ lounge with booming music and a lively crowd most of whom were on the younger side looking like they were getting ready to go out. I noticed at least one or 2 bachelorette parties. It was a Friday night around 9 so it may have a completely different vibe earlier or on another day. If you've been to shrine in Connecticut, it has a very similar vibe which makes sense because they're both owned by the same owner. The menu is extensive with a large choice of sushi and Asian dishes. I'd say everything I had was pretty delicious but nothing was super unique or noteworthy except for maybe the street noodles, yummy. If you're a fan of curry, these are delicious and you get a massive serving. Even the small size is definitely meant to be shared by at least a couple of people. Although I actually wish they were a little spicier but not everyone is into that. We also ordered a party drink, the 'big kahuna' and although it was expensive, they definitely don't jip you on the alcohol and sharing between 4 people worked pretty well. All in all I would definitely recommend this place especially if you have a large group and it's a special occasion. It's a great pre-dancing party dinner spot. read more

This place is RACIST. I was turned away in the rudest way by the bouncer for wearing "sneakers", when I was wearing a pair of black leather Colehan shoes. When I tried to explain politely that I wasn't wearing Nike or Adidas running shoes, he replied, "I don't care what f***ing brand your shoes are." I then saw him let in several White customers wearing what were clearly white-colored sneakers. Thank you for being racist and swearing at Asian customers for no reason. Liked the upscale atmosphere and enjoyed the food and cocktails. You could tell the cocktails were made right and not in a rush. HUGE portions. Definitely can split the regular-sized portion with another person (esp. if you're two ladies). Even with the large portion sizes and splitting everything, I left with my wallet hurting and feeling like it was still a little too over-priced. Food wise it was decent but overpriced, service wise horrible. Card everyone but asked for 2nd ID, we had a few folks with working visas that had copies of their passport, waitress would not accept. We also had a cake for a colleague, since they didn't provide the cake, waitress came over and said we would be charged $3 a person if we wanted to eat our cake, else we would have to pay for their cake. Came here for drinks late on a Wednesday night. It was a good scene for a Wednesday night. The scantily clad waitress and the girl she was training were quick with the drinks. By 10pm it was a mix of people eating late night Asian food and the other half drinking by the bar. This place seemed to draw a more mature crowd compared to other bars in the city. read more
