Eleven is a fine upscale restaurant with a lively, engaging atmosphere, adventurous and interesting dishes, and a large selection of wine, beer, and cocktails.
My wife and I were visiting from Cincinnati, and enjoy an upscale restaurant now and then. Reading the reviews on Eleven drew us to it. We were surprised and delighted when we were able to get a 7:30 reservation for Saturday night that very afternoon. I appreciated that we could reserve through Open Table right on the Yelp app. Very easy. We arrived about 30 minutes early, ready to get a cocktail, but they were able to seat us immediately. Once we walked in, it was clear why we were so readily able to get seating: this is a large restaurant! For this type of restaurant, I am used to smaller, more crowded rooms. This appears to be in a converted factory or warehouse, and the large main room with high cielings, exposed rafters, and contemporary decor and furnishings was fun and comfortable. The wine storage room hovers above, encased in glass, calling to you to try its selections.
We were seated next to an open kitchen, which was boistrous but not noisy. The guest is brought into the open kitchen experience on purpose - this was not bad seating. We rather enjoyed seeing the action and feeling the bustle.
The service was competent but did not rise to the level of the food. We were not ready to order cocktails when our server first visited (my wife was not sure she was ready to try a cocktail with frothed egg white). After a second quick check, we decided on our cocktail order, but the server did not return for about ten minutes. Once we ordered the cocktail and some oysters, we were given only a few minutes before we were asked for our orders. I was expecting some explanation of featured dishes or recommendations, but our server got straight to business - maybe that's just how it's done at Eleven, or how it's done in Pittsburgh, but the pace was a little fast for the evening-long experience we were prepared for. We decided on the chef's tasting menu with wine pairings. The dishes were brought out at a somewhat irregular pace, but all were served at the appropriate temperature, and all of the service was absolutely courteous. There is the matter of the bread service - at unpredictable intervals, a woman came by to offer us bread. Once, after our appetizers (about 20 minutes after we were seated), again about 10 minutes later, and again when we had our dessert. Good bread, but a strange serving style.
We chose a plate of four oysters to start, two for each. Two were of average size, and two were unexpectedly small. They were excellent with the hot sauce.
The Chef's tasting menu was excellent - tuna tartare, grilled swordfish with couscous, sun-dried tomatoes, and pickled jalepaño slices, lamb, and a fantastic selection of desserts. Despite the dessert listed with the tasting menu, we were presented with the opportunity to select any of the desserts, and our wine would be paired appropriately. The paired wine selections were very well chosen. These were wines I would have never chosen on my own, but the pairing with the dishes made them a unique experience. Mind that the paired wine selections were half-size pours. This is entirely appropriate for pairings with a multiple course meal, but don't expect to get four glasses of wine.
In conclusion, a fine atmosphere, outstanding food, and competent service. Considering the overall experience, Eleven does not entirely justify the prices it charges, but it's close. For the price, I would expect a higher class of service, atmosphere, or more adventurous dishes. It is absolutely worth a visit. read more
