We stood there for about 5 to 7 minutes before heading to the bar to let them know that we were there. After that, it took about 2 to 3 minutes before we were greeted and seated. Once we were seated service continued to be a little bit slow. Our waitress came to our table about seven minutes later she seemed a little nervous and even spilled water on the floor while she was pouring us a glass of water. I really want to love Elephant East. The vibes are amazing, the food is delicious, but the service leaves a lot to be desired. I've been here twice in the last month and the service wasn't great either time. Last night, the service was incredibly slow - took almost 20 minutes to get 2 drinks. When those drinks arrived, one of them was spilled on my companion due to how the restaurant is setup with minimal space between the tables. Dinner was great, although we ordered Thai green beans and received fried rice, so another issue there. When we received the check, it had dessert listed that we didn't order. We reserved a New Year's Eve prix fixe experience for two. The ambiance was elegant with carved wood molding and ceiling fixtures. Every bite was beautifully plated and our entrees carried some good flavor components. The downside came with our chocolate lava cake which was served cold. Instead of a warm decadent gooey-ness, we got a crumbly dry slab of cake that stuck to the roof of the mouth. Sadly another miss was when one of our water glasses had a lipstick stains on the rim. And nope, it's not "fusion" if you just use lower-grade ingredients. Nothing fusion-y about it. While I'm writing this it feels like a 2 star review, but hey it was a nice environment with great waitstaff. Just really mediocre food. The lights are dimmed and intimate and the decor was very aesthetic and it was also pretty lively. The waiter was very patient and friendly. One thing I liked about this menu was how accommodating it was, although there were limited vegetarian options on the menu, we were able to swap out the meat on the menu for another meat or have it made vegetarian. My thoughts on what we ordered - - Drunken Noodles - It was not very spicy, which was bit disappointing, but not bad as a dish. - As appetizers, we ordered the Blistered Shishito Peppers and Fresh Spring Rolls and both were delicious and a great combination with the sauces they came with. My favorite dishes were Korean Fried Chicken (subbed out Chicken for Tofu), Bang Bang Shrimp and Crispy Chicken Bao Bun (subbed out Chicken for Tofu)! I highly recommend these as the flavors from the sauces made them stand out the most from the other items we had ordered. The appetizer I had was the spring rolls. They were humongous. Let me tell you that I do think it was really good, but I wouldn't say that was a spring roll the beef Boogie was pretty good. December 2022 Reservation for 2 via open table (but a solo date) Thursday evening 5:30 pm Happy hour time Parking: Valet is complimentary. Tips accepted (cash or Cashapp). You may also park alongside the street and walk a short distance ( this was not an available option during this time-very packed). Valet is on a one way street, and you have to pull in almost immediately. I missed it the first block around, so be watchful. Restaurant is a very short distance from valet. Go through the side nearest the neighboring restaurant. You'll see the carpet with the logo and big double doors. Ambiance/aesthetics: Extremely dark/ dim lighting. Very laid back setting. Music, not too loud. Instrumental. Very Instagram friendly, if you use flash. Grown and Sexy. Misc information: Restaurant is smaller than I imagined. Nothing special. My issue..... my bill was $40 and some change. I gave them my DISCOVER card. Bar tender : "I'm sorry I forgot to mention Discover is the only card we don't accept" I had to dig through my purse to look for my Visa, which was at home. I let him know that, and he went for the manager. The manager came out and mentioned that out of the restaurants, they are the one who don't take Discover, and they are trying to get someone out there to fix it. I let him know the only way I could pay was to Cashapp an employee. That's the only option I had. I did not want to phone a friend. It was already embarrassing enough to have to dig through my purse for another form of payment and not have it. Anxiety level PEAKED. He came back and told me the bar tender was able to accommodate, and then stated now "Don't [you] feel taller?" to which I responded No, I did not. Couldn't even tip the valet like I wanted because I only had $3 because I don't carry cash. Ended up sending him more when I made it back home. Overall, I'm glad that the restaurant was able to accept the Cashapp, but I wouldn't have to return. USUALLY I have more than one form of payment, but I switch purses often. Our waiter was very nice and made great suggestions. We started out with the bang bang shrimp for our appetizer. It was really good. For dinner I ordered the popular Korean fried chicken with a side of fried rice. Everything was good and served in the right portion size. Once done I didn't feel overly stuffed. Great Ambiance, But the Food is Overpriced and is Lacking in Almost Every Way Ordered: (App) Bang Bang Shrimp - 3/5 - The breading was slightly soggy. Definitely not worth its value at $18 for this tiny bowl of shrimp (there were a lot of greens underneath). (Main) Char Siu Pork Belly - 2/5 - The pork was very tender but the char siu seasoning was overpowering. The bok choy was very sour, with far too much vinegar in it. More concerning, however was that the bottom parts of the bok choy stems all had a lot of dirt and looked like they weren't washed before cooking. (Dessert) Chinese Doughnuts - 5/5 - The donuts were the highlight of the meal. The sauces were all distinct and the doubts were nice and crispy. Big fan of them. The atmosphere and vibes of the restaurant are great. It is very warm, inviting, and similar to what you would find in Asia. The service was also excellent. Our server was friendly and quick to refill our water. Unfortunately, the biggest problem was the food. Asian cooking is known for humble ingredients and extraordinary flavors. Because of the humble ingredients, the pricing is generally lower than what you would find in European or American cuisine restaurants. This restaurant uses the same humble ingredients but upcharges them far beyond normal, even compared to other Asian restaurants in DFW. For example, $28 for 5 thin slices of pork belly (one of the cheapest cuts of pork), 1 bok choy, and a cup of rice is ridiculous. You can find far more meat at a far more reasonable price in dozens of restaurants across DFW. The food elsewhere would not only be cheaper, but of higher quality. The bigger issue is that the quality of the food does not match the quality of the restaurant. The price would be fine if the food actually was worth the price. All of the dishes except for the dessert were subpar at best, and downright inedible in the case of the bok choy due to the huge amounts of vinegar and dirt. Given the huge amount of high quality Asian restaurants within a 5 mile radius of Uptown, this is a definite skip. read more
