I have been working in Flushing for just over two years now. While there are ample Chinese food dining establishments, there is not much of anything else. After two years, I finally discovered this gem, less than a mile away from my office. A coworker told me she gets food delivered all the time on the weekends. Wanting to try anything new we took the trek to El Gustazo. She told me that they are famous for their delicious empanadas. At $1.25 each how could you not get all three?? Started off with the chicken which was absolutely outstanding. Slow pulled chicken tucked in a corn based pillow dough. The next empanada I picked up was the carne. Same consistency as the pollo. The last one I had was the queso. Hands down the best out of the three. One bite in and I was in mozzarella heaven. The cheese came oozing out, ugh my mouth is watering just thinking about it. I also tried some of the tostones that my coworker ordered. They were huge pieces of green plantains perfectly fried and mashed. They came served with a side of garlic hot sauce. I was really disappointed by this place especially because it has so many great reviews. I live in the area and getting good food can sometimes be limiting. I ordered grilled chicken with rice and beans. The chicken was very crunchy, I threw it all out. For a week straight, my wife literally came and bought food here every morning and after work. The empanadas here are friggin bangin! Only a buck 25 for either cheese, beef, or chicken. All three are really good but I like the cheese one the best. They make a variety of food and a majority of things we've tried so far has been surprisingly delicious. I had mostly cheese and chicken empanadas for a week straight with their zingy spicy hot sauce. We also ordered their chicharrons numerous of times because its so good here. Deep fried perfection. The skin is nice a crispy crunchy while the bottom part remains juicy and tender and not dry. We had it so many times, the lady suggested we order #78 Bandeja Tipica. It came with red beans, a flank steak, chicharron, avocados, plantains, fried egg and a corn cake. The platter wasn't bad considering its price however the steak is a bit dry due to its thin cut and the corn cake just taste horrible. Completely bland and flavorless. They also serve daily specials. So far we've only tried their Pollo BBQ served with rice and beans, plantains, and their potato salad. The chicken was decent. Nice and tender, not too dry. They give you a small container of beans. It's a lot of beans to go with your food and their potato salad is really good here. Full of ingredients, not just potato and mayo. Verdict - Tired of all the crappy Chinese lunch takeouts in Flushing? Eat some Spanish food for a change. It's so satisfying. I can eat those cheese empanadas and chicharrons all day with their hot sauce. The one thing I dislike was they're a bit cheap on the hot sauce when you ask for extra. Especially with the amount we order, we expect a little more to go with not just our empanadas, but also along with your platters. They wanted to charge a dollar for a small tiny cup of hot sauce. Cash only small mom and pop like eatery in flushing. It seems kind of out of place to have a Colombian food eatery in the flushing area but whose complaining? I've only ordered empanadas from here and I def preferred their empanadas over mama's empanadas because the outside is crunchy and soft at the same time whereas mamas is just super crunchy. if you've had mamas, you know those are super deep fried to get that really hard exterior. El Palacio doesn't have the green sauce like other places but they do have a special red sauce which is kind of similar to pico de gallo. But with even just a little bit, it's super flavorful and comes with a numbing kick. And empanadas are only $1.25 each, for beef, chicken, and cheese! Beef and cheese are my go to. They have a set menu that ranges from empanadas, burgers, breakfast, Colombian platters with steak, fried pork belly & fried fish, salads, & also a rotating menu that varies depending on the day of the week. Steak was a bit well done to my liking but for $14 a Colombian platter will fill two grown people. Comes with rice & beans, slice of avocado , fried egg & two meats(fried pork belly) seasoned just right and their home made salsa is soooo amazingly addictive too. Bf loves their oxtail which is available with the rotating menu. Friendly service, they have a selection of over sugared Colombian sodas that look like jarritos in the drink fridge, they do a lot of takeout/delivery service it seems. The beef empanadas are not the best, thanks for letting me down Yelpers. They had 3 kinds; beef, chicken, and cheese. I had all three and the best one that I think has to go to the chicken. I gave it 3 stars because I was expecting the beef empanadas to have more beef in it, it was very pasty inside with very few shredded beef. (it might have been bean turned into a paste and mixed with beef, not much flavor) The chicken, on the other hand, was very flavorful with punches of spices and real chicken shreds. The cheese is a pass; it was basically mozzarella with nothing else; no flavor and for some odd reason, it was a bit cold. I love how it came out fresh, the outside yellow flour is crisp and crunchy. The hot sauce makes it all go down easier but I was expecting it to be "green sauce" and for their sauce to not be water down. Overall for the price of $1.25 each, I would possibly come back if I'm near the area but would explore a bit further into jackson heights for some real authentic mexican food. The typical dish is very good. I've been craving this for the longest time. The chicharron is crunchy, rice and beans were on point, the service was amazing, the entire dish was so delicious!! The portion was humongous so I only ate half but for the price, totally worth it. I think the typical dish is enough for 2 people because the dish is pretty heavy. The steak was dry.
