Particularly yummy is their rendition of the guava and cheese pastry which I bought several times especially recently! Flaky with guava paste and cheese as the filling, it also has a sugar glaze on top. Wow, their bunuelos, corn patties and pan de bono are excellent! The dough part of these three types of baked goods is just right. I also tried the wheat bun with a little bit of guava in it. Nice bakery for a pick me up if you are up for trying Latino bakery items. Even with their limited English, the staff are helpful and provided good customer service. This place has been around for years and is always busy. I really like their beef and spinach empanadas. Very flavorful and the green sauce gives a nice kick. Their soups are also very tasty. They also have a wide variety of breads. The one with the cheese inside is delicious. Occasionally I'll treat myself to the strawberry cheesecake. Dense, like Junior's cheesecake. Yum! I went in and asked for a Tres Leches cake. At first, I was told they only had slices, but I said I called and was told they have cakes. After more confusion, they told me they have cakes and asked which flavor. I picked strawberry and was told it was $30. After she boxed it for me, I said $30? She then said $25. Brought it home and put in in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. Tried it and it was dry and hard, especially near the bottom. This was really bad since a Tres Leches cake is supposed to be especially moist! The next day, I went to a birthday party to celebrate another family member's birthday and they also had a Tres Leches cake. It was so good and moist, there was no comparison. so much more than just a bakery! in a sea of asian businesses, latin bakery has stood out and held its own. i've been coming here for years and have tried a bunch of things. some standouts: -beef empanadas: hot, crunchy, flavorful, a really nice snack. -buñuelos: a big round ball of spongy, sorta eggy bread on the inside, crunchy outer shell. it has a teeny tiny bit of sweetness and i really like pairing it with hot coffee. -oxtail stew: filled with yucca, potatoes, and tender oxtails, it's super hearty, flavorful, and oh-so-comforting. they also ask if you want cilantro in it. as a cilantro lover, i'm onboard of course. however, i kno some ppl has an aversion to cilantro and it's nice that they look out for them too. -bandeja paisa: the unofficial national dish of Colombia. holy moley, this is the textbook definition of "itis". it comes with steak, chorizo, chicharron, maduro (fried sweet plantain), avocado, arepa, fried egg, rice, and beans. there's sooooo much going on and everything is nicely seasoned. the portion size is huge and i can make 2-3 meals out of it. eat this and you'll need a nap afterwards lol. the staff doesn't speak much english but they are nice and do try hard to help you. i also saw it as a chance to brush off and practice my broken Spanish lol. when all else fails, just smile (or as much as you can through a mask) and point lol. a good neighborhood spot and highly recommended for sure! read more

I remember them being smaller, dry, and sometimes soggy but these were bigger, moist, flavorful, and crunchy. I love their hot sauce. It is quite thin and spicy but the kind that does not linger. I've been coming to this place for the past ten years. It's good solid homemade Spanish food. Usually when I come here I always get El Especial del día (the special of the day), or I'll just stop by to pick up a few empanadas to satisfy my craving. I'm also in love with their coffee (hot or iced). Today the lunch/dinner special was Roast chicken on a bed of white rice and (my favorite) platano maduro/sweet plantain. You also get a small salad and a side of brown beans (they're not like my mothers Dominican habichuelas, but they're still very delicious over the white rice). I come in here as they have a new things I like... But there has been a bit of a language barrier. First time I came in asked if an item had chocolate in it... The woman said yes... I get to work and it is some sort of corn pancake thing... No chocolate. Another time I come in... Usually I order a #7... They usually just give me some bread with it... Never asking what kind... So I come in and say I want Pan as the menu says it comes with Pan. The lady behind me has to explain in Spanish that I just want the bread no eggs... Easy... Right? Nope!!! Brian C and I needed a quick paleo friendly bite before a trip to the city. We passed by the sign "pollos" and "colombian" which caught our attention. The long line of latin locals that almost went out the door was the final push to make us go in. Though I was saddened by the realization that I cannot indulge on the displayed empanadas and fried cheese balls, I was satisfied with the chicken lunch special offer (1/4 roasted chicken, beans, salad, plantains and rice for $7.50. We didn't get rice and was charged $6.15 a pop). The chicken (leg) was very tender and the beans were good. The bf commented that the plantain was harder than he preferred but I didn't mind. The dish we both eyed, however, was the Sunday special oxtail soup that everyone else was slurping up, gnawing at the oxtail with no shame. We'll be back for that in a few weeks. One star for their tasty empanadas which are very fairly priced and one star for the location (because sometimes in the midst of all the food that is and what makes up Flushing, you just want something that isn't Asian cuisine). The service is beyond terrible. I have been there multiple times because I was craving their spinach empanadas and that is and will remain the only reason I ever go back there. The ladies that work behind the counter love to talk to and engage in conversation with the customers that speak Spanish and that is totally okay - in fact, I think it's a great showcase of friendly customer service. However, each time I have gone here and waited patiently on line for them to finish whatever conversation they were having with the person in front of me, they would completely skip over me and talk to the next Hispanic customer after me. Is this intentional? Maybe. Is it okay? Absolutely not. It became almost impossible at that point to get any of their attention to just place any small order of 2-3 empanadas which are right by the window staying warm. And by the time they DO get to little old me, their smiles are gone and I get the feeling they don't want to help me much less look at me. They won't even hand me my change - they'll just toss it on the counter for me to take. No thank you, no "have a nice day", no smiles like the people before (and after) received. Whenever I tell my friends that there's a Latin restaurant on Main Street in Flushing, they're always pretty surprised. To me, this shows a) how diverse Flushing is and b) how isolated and disjointed our ethnic communities are from each other. I come here for lunch sometimes, and I am always the only Asian person there. But enough with the social commentary/observation... the food here is great, no matter who you are. I've had the chicken soup and rice, which is definitely a full meal. I particularly like the rice, I'm not sure what they put in it but it has a nice subtle flavor. The meals are also great. Most recently I had a beef stew dish with rice, beans, plantains, and a salad. It's definitely a lot of food, but the beans really go well with the rice and meat. I've also had empanadas here, which are an awesome snack when on the go. Especially the spinach. One thing that annoys me a bit is that the counter on the side of the dining area (pretty much the only place to sit at during lunch if you're a solo diner) is way too high. That, or the bar stools/chairs are too low (though they actually are kind of high. Maybe I should just grow a little taller, but eating with a perfectly straight back isn't always something I can keep up throughout a meal. I guess it helps my posture though. read more

Anyway, been meaning to stop in for years since it has survived all these years of the Chinese migration into Flushing. I'm sad that I didn't stop in earlier. I ordered the ox tail stew which is advertised on their window as a regular lunch special for $7.50. Not only do you get a large portion of oxtails, but they also give you a heaping serving of rice and beans with a sweet plantain on the side. The pasta salad wasn't anything to write home about, but it was another complimentary side dish that was included. I love this place. This is the ONE random spot that you can grab spanish food on Main st. and it's been here for YEARS for a reason. Going in for the first time, you would think that the latin people in there would give me weird looks (me being asian) but that was not the case. The staff was so welcoming and the people in there were amazing. The smell is the first thing that hits you when you walk through the doors. The aroma of the freshly cooked rice and the freshly baked chicken makes your mouth water as soon as you cross the threshold. They have the usual buffet line selection where you can pick what you want them to throw into your lunchbox and every order comes with a salad of the day. They mix it up between 4-5 different salads every day of the week which is a nice variety since I eat there a lot. I usually take the food to go but there are seats available for those who want to sit down and grab a great meal. I grew up in Corona and love spanish food and find this place to be amazing BUT I have many spanish friends who think it's bland and subpar. I don't know. I never thought I'd say this but I don't love Latin Bakery anymore. The awning out front SAYS Colombian and they still have the bakery portion which is for the most part Colombian but they have expanded their food offerings to now tacos and mofongo. Now, I LIKE tacos and I like mofongo....but NOT from a place that bills itself as Colombian. Yes this is national pride that is getting in the way but I've tried some of the new additions to the menu and I'm NOT feeling them. If I want tacos, I'll walk down Roosevelt to 111th or 103rd to a truck. If I want mofongo I'll head to either Spanish Harlem or the Bronx. I'll continue to come here for a cafe con leche and pan de yuca and MAYBE a 1/2 roasted chicken but if I have a hankering for local Colombian food that's not homemade, I've defected to my local outpost of El Palacio de Las Empanadas/Burger Express, on College Point Blvd btwn Sanford and Maple. Being adventurous foodie, I decided to step it and hold my ground despite the glares by a room filled by non-Asians... Well you guessed it, Hispanic people. SARA is the name of the shame! she is the WORST clerk. Denies service like if she were the owner of the place. She doesn't care and overcharges if you are not paying attention. It is funny to find a Colombian Bakery, surrounded by Chinese restaurants in the middle of downtown Flushing, NY. The pan con queso offered at this bakery is sooooo good especially early in the morning when they are just out of the oven. I usually buy the big loaf of pan con queso, but they also have small rolls. The empanadas de carne (beef) are delicious. I have not found a place that has as flavorful empanadas as this one. I love their salsa as well. It gives the empanadas a little kick. The other pastries are very good, but I still have to try a few others. This bakery also offers Colombian breakfast platters, which I still have to try. I have tried their lunch platters which are decent and very affordable. They give you very large portions! Next time you are around Flushing and want to try something other than Chinese foods, this is a great place to visit. read more
