Colombian arepas (or at least the ones here) come with a sweet, corn tortilla and are more open faced: to be eaten with a fork. In the past, I've had flour tortillas that are designed more like a taco and eaten as a handheld. So despite the differences, I (and my friends) enjoyed our meal. We had plans to eat our way through Jackson Heights, but because a couple of the places we planned to visit were closed, we actually just mostly hung out here and enjoyed our arepas of the sweet and open-faced variety. Before this, if someone mentioned arepas, I probably would have confused them with pupusas, which I'd only seen at street fairs and thought of as more of a sweet item. It's so common for places to overcook little chunks of beef, but here it was perfect. Each arepa is big enough to split between two people, so the price feels very fair. The filling was generous, with beef packed inside and even overflowing out the sides. They also serve the arepas with a rack of five or six sauces to choose from. Some were spicy, and one had a sweet condensed milk flavor if you like a mix of sweet and savory. We decided to visit the original location, which was closer to Brooklyn, and it did not disappoint. Their other location is in Astoria, NY. From the moment we arrived, the service was excellent. The staff was incredibly sweet, helpful, and genuinely welcoming, which made the whole experience even better. As an arepa lover, I was thrilled with the menu. They offer all kinds of traditional-style arepas.. nothing overly fancy or loaded with crazy toppings, just classic, authentic, and delicious. You can also find other options like burgers, la bandeja, appetizers, and drinks. We went during their brunch hours (12-4 PM), and they also offer bottomless mimosas for $20 for 90 minutes, such a great deal! You can order from either the brunch or regular menu, which gives you plenty of flexibility. The food was hearty and filling but oh so satisfying. Prices were very fair for the quality and portion sizes. The space itself was clean and had a relaxed vibe. My friend and I had been planning a visit to The Arepa Lady for several months since we are from Connecticut. After a train ride, subway, ride, and short walk, we finally made it to their Jackson Heights location. We were greeted warmly and enthusiastically and promptly seated. We had read many reviews that said there was usually a line at the door when they opened at noon, but we did not get there until a little after 1 PM, and there was no line thankfully, since we were very hungry. We were so happy to learn that the entire menu was available for brunch. I decided to try one brunch arepa And one from the regular menu. I ordered the Relleno and the Shrimp arepas, and just a regular coffee to drink. The Relleno came in a choclo arepa, and so I asked for the other one in a queso arepa. Both arepas weee very tasty, but I preferred the shrimp one because I like the style of arepa better. My friend ordered a breakfast arepa and a chicken one. We ended up sharing ours so that we got to try all of them. She got the chocolate con queso to drink. Before I forget - we shared one empanada - because we didn't want to ruin our appetites - and it was amazing! And the yucca fries... get those and not the regular fries! And the sauces.... Hard to pick a favorite. The service was excellent! The interior is nice - there is a nice photo of the original arepa lady, Maria Cano. A great brunch spot in Jackson Heights. They have a great bottomless deal, one of the best I've seen. It wasn't too busy on a Sunday afternoon, you can just walk in. The place had booth seating, and a casual feeling. The menu is extensive and a bit overwhelming, there are 4 categories of arepas and different variations of each. Our waiter was kind enough to offer some suggestions. He explained that the most popular options were Arepa de choclo and the arepa de queso. I at first thought that it was expensive to pay $12 for a single arepa but these things are very filling. We started with sweet plantains and the elote corn. Now, it's become one of my go to spots when I want great food and drinks close to home for a great price! My usual order is the steak choclo with avocado--it's delicious every time. I also recommend starting with the mini empanadas; they're the perfect bite to share. I love their hot sauce that they place on every table, but their garlic sauce is a great option too. While their white sangria seems to be the most popular (almost every table I see has a pitcher or glass of it whenever I visit), I definitely prefer the red sangria. Pro tip: if you and your date plan on having at least two glasses each, go for the pitcher, it's the perfect amount for two people, maybe even three if you aren't a big drinker! The carne asada and pollo asado were a bit dry and you really need to add sauce to flavor it up. They have pink sauce (ketchup mayo mix), hot sauce, a garlic sauce, and pineapple sauce. I liked the hot sauce and garlic sauce the most. It would've been great if they came with more toppings aside from the meat but they charge for each add-on. I've had really solid arepas at other spots but this one didn't hit the spot for me. The Patacon was fried perfectly and had great texture. My first time having actual arepas, and it was different from what I imagine it would taste like. I've had corn cakes before, but they were from Panama, and I found them a bit too dry. However, the ones from arepa lady, was significantly better, and had a really nice flavor to it. My favorite dish I ordered was the guacamole and tostones. I've always loved tostones and guacamole, so that was probably why, but it was definitely my favorite dish I got. I got the arepa de choclo (I'm not completely sure if it was choclo or not), with sirloin and avocado and the guacamole and tostones. As such, I had a hard time finishing the dish, and even though I hate food waste, it was ultimately one I could not finish. Where we were disappointed, however, was the service speed, or lack thereof. We waited for a while thinking that the kitchen was backed up, but tables that arrived later than us had their food already. We then asked our waiter who checked and it turned out the kitchen had forgotten about our order. This cycle occurred twice before we finally had our food for a total wait time that exceeded 75-80 minutes easily. Although the wait staff was really nice, it was simply too long of a wait. Not every restaurant has a perfect inning every single day, and this may have been one of those for Arepa Lady. That being said, the flavors, portions, and prices were still great. Absolutely delicious. I'm already planning my next trip back. Texted my partner after the first bite saying she had to come check it out ASAP. Really amazing prices, the service was quick and friendly and the food totally hit the spot. Like another reviewer mentioned, there's a very homey feel. Casual, cozy and comfortable. I've only after had Venezuelan arepas so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. But these were DEE-LISH! I got the arepa de queso... can't remember what it was called but it included black beans and plantains. It was a dream for me. Each table has three sauces: a mayo-ketchup, a sweeter one, and a tangy spicy one. All were super delicious. I wished I had more arepa just to enjoy more of the sauces. Can't wait to come back! They have the best arepitas with guacamole. It's one of the best Colombian spots I've been to but I'm Mexican so I may be wrong. I enjoy the picada which is a meat platter, the arepa with carne desmechada and the chorizo arepa. It's a good place to go in a group to share different arepas, green plantains and the meat platter. I also really enjoyed their maracuya sangria. It's tasty and strong. read more
