I ordered one of the family style combos which came with a whole rotisserie chicken, salad, French fries, as well as rice and beans. Although I didn't want the fries it ended up working out to be cheaper than one of the other combos that I was looking at. The food was average to say the least. The fries needed salt, the beans needed help, and the chicken could've spun a little longer in the rotisserie. I order here all the time because it's always quick and convenient. I usually stick to their personal 1/4 chicken combo meal and the portions are big enough to split for two meals/people. However, their empanadas need improvement and are always dried out and over cooked. The filling does not taste as fresh as it should be at times as well. Chicken empanadas taste flavorful, spiced, and rich. The green sauce that comes with it is spicy/flavorful and not watery bland like some other spots. The beef empanadas here are unique, I thought it would be like the chicken empanada but just different meat. The beef empanadas had a different very crunchy almost like a chip outer texture. And the inside was interesting. Tasted like mashed potato mixed with some beef. It didn't fit my palate but I remember having beef dishes at other Hispanic restaurants and I didn't like it too. So it's just a cultural preference. If you are trying out this food or restaurant for the first time I , definitely recommend the chicken empanada. Not the beef. I've visited Rico's for their lunch special since it's conveniently located from where I work. This area is far from anything substantial to feast on. As a avid Colombian cuisine connoisseur, I rate Rico's a solid 3 stars. The restaurant is small but there is seating available. The lunch menu features different items each day. I have always kept it simple for my tastebuds sake and order the quarter rotisserie chicken, salad , rice and beans with the complimentary beef plantain soup. The food here is consumable. There's no extraordinary flavor or impeccable items to reference. For the few times that I have visited the Chicken was always mediocre. Skimpy and not flavorful. The Rice and beans were basic. The salad is terrible. Iceberg lettuce, tomato and a terrible dressing. The beef plaintain soup is too much broth and not enough vegetable and beef. The only thing I do like here is the traditional Super CoCo hard coconut candy they give you after you pay the bill. The service is ok but the food needs work. You want tasty Colombian flavor ? So my wife had just given birth and hasn't eaten all day. We've been at the hospital from 9am and she doesn't get a chance to eat until about 8pm. I tell her about this Colombian restaurant across the street and she takes a look at the menu. She's a born vegetarian and does not eat any meat. The special for Monday is listed "Vegetable soup". I go down to the restaurant and ask if they still had vegetable soup, the girl at the register checks with the cook and the cook says yes. I also CONFIRMED with the girl at the register asking "The vegetable soup has no meat, right?" She confirmed it did not. I order a small and a large "vegetable" soup for takeout and bring it all the way up to my wife's room only to take it out and see chunks of beef in it. This was about 30 minutes before closing so they didn't care and expected me not to return before they closed. I returned with the soup and told the girl at the register I asked for Vegetable soup, the girl shrugs her shoulders and says "IT IS VEGETABLE SOUP.... WITH BEEF." I asked "why did you confirm it had no meat, why call it vegetable soup and not beef soup? This is not what I ordered" She replied "I dont know why they call it vegetable soup either, but thats just what it is." It's not a welcoming environment. The food is not bad, but not worth the trip. It's a much better experience at the Dunkin Donuts a few doors down. The hospital service across the street does a better job. The hospital is friendlier, cheaper in price, they take credit cards, and the food quality is the same as Rico's. You would think Rico's had it made because the hospital is across the street. Not much business from the hospital... I wonder why. I don't want anyone out if business, however, if this place leaves, I'm sure we'll end up with something better, no matter what. Some suggestions: get friendly staff get a credit card machine, improve some of your recipes. If it was business, on a separate note: I would capitalize on having a hospital across the street and keep my business running, keep my employees busy, maybe hire more staff with the added business, and be part of the community, not just a place we all avoid in the community. read more

In an area consumed by Asian everything, it was refreshing to find a good Hispanic restaurant...run by real Hispanics, not Asians *no offense to anyone* Parking in the area is a bit difficult as they are located across the street from a hospital. I would suggest going a block or two off 45 Ave and you should be able to find something there. I've ordered take out from here on two occasions and both times I've enjoyed my meal. I got the lunch special both times and it was $8. It comes with the soup of the day, 1/4 chicken, rice and beans, plantain and salad. First time I was under the assumption that the soup was additional so I opted out of it. On my second trip I made sure to get everything (except rice), including a $1 chicken empananda. The cashier was nice enough to let me slide on the 21 cents because all I had was a $10 bill and my bank/credit cards (they are cash only). Their rotesserie chicken (both white and dark meat) has light seasoning and is so moist. You can literally see the juices coming off the thigh pieces. The beans are a tab bit salty (I added water) and the salad is really good. It comes with shredded purple cabbage, shredded carrots, romaine lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes and a delicious light Italian dressing with salt and pepper sprinkled on top. The plantains were a little charred, but I didn't mind. The meal is very filling; for sure you get your monies worth. After the chicken, beans, salad and plantains I was stuffed. I couldn't even look at anymore food. I gave the empanada to my mom, and she said it was ok. I'll be warming up the soup and eating it for dinner. Not bad, not bad. They have peruvian/colombian style rotisserie chicken here. It's still not as good as a place that uses charcoal (I don't think you can get charcoal anywhere unless you head down to Washinton, DC), but the seasoning is good and the meat is flavorful. Just go with the dark meat and you'll be fine. I like the green spicy sauce they have. The chicken is pretty cheap - you can get a whole bird to go for about $8.95, or a half chicken for $5. Not a bad deal at all. If you're at the hospital next door, this place is a welcome respite from the hospital food. The workers were super nice and friendly when I came. My sister and I were looking for a place close by to fill our tummies for not so much money. Rico's was a short walk away and we decided to drop in after she had told me about the abundant amount of food they serve. We ordered a #3 to share (you can see a pic of it). The entree came with rice, a side of saucy beans, 2 pieces of flat steak, a whole sweet plantain, a small arepa, a whole chorizo, an overeasy egg, chicharron (always delicious!) and a few slice of avocado. Overall the food was great, the arepa was mehh; wish there was more avocado slices too! And the amazing green sauce...how could I forget to mention that?! I'm not sure what it is but its like a refreshing spicy ranch? Delicious on the steak and chorizo! The place itself is quite small, only a couple of tables. There was only one waitress and I believe 2 or 3 cooks? The waitress was really nice to us and tended to us often (and she has nice hair!) After we finished our meal, we got our bill promptly, along with two pieces of coco candy (yum!). Not worth the price. Went from $14 to $20 for a colombian typical platter. I stopped going here for a long time. If I'm going to spend $20 for a meal, I'd rather eat at a nicer restaurant. They also don't even take credit card. In the year 2020, if you're a business that doesn't accept credit cards as a form of payment I assume you're too cheap to accept the transaction fees and assume you cheap out in other areas in the services/food you offer. If they were smart they'd offer a lunch size and a dinner size to appeal to more customers. Also, ordering pick-up is a PITA if you don't speak Spanish. They'll tell you to please hold after every exchange. Then at the end someone new will pick up the phone and restart the whole ordering process over again. Happens more often than not. when I get my colombian cravings, I'll just order through uber eats/grubhub from a different restaurant, for less $, more food, and better quality. If your teeth isn't so great I recommend stay away from the empanadas. The first bite was obviously the corner which is also the part most of the dough overlap. But the whole empanada skin was hard and rough. It did have flavor, yes the skin had flavor but not the filling inside! When I asked her for extra sauce not only did she declined my request; she responded with an attitude.
