I recently enjoyed a meal of red snapper with maduros at a cozy Peruvian restaurant. The fish was fresh and flavorful, complemented perfectly by the sweet plantains. While the temperature of the environment was a little too hot, it could have been slightly better, I understand the challenges of a small establishment. What stood out most was the excellent service--attentive, friendly, and welcoming. Overall, a satisfying experience, and I'd gladly return! PS I also took the dessert of Tres leches home and ate it and it was awesome so good I would kindly recommend they put it in a soup container and not the one they gave me because it leaked out but it was beautiful and it was good. I recommend it also.

As a fellow Peruvian I approve! Have been going to this restaurant for many years. Come here for your Peruvian food!

My family and I decided to eat here this weekend. Service was 8/10 we got seated right away . Place was pretty empty when we go there. (Party of 5) after a while it got filled up and busy. We didn't get our order taken for awhile and the table next to us who got there after got their order taken fairly quickly. Besides that the food was good. Only thing I would say is the shrimp was over cooked .Chicha was 10/10 freshly made lemonade, maracuyá juice 10/10 pitcher of sangria was ok too sweet for me.

This is a cozy Peruvian restaurant with a couple of locations in Queens. It is not really for groups, as it is cramped inside and the tables and chairs are packed together making it feel even more cramped. We had several entrees: 1) Jalea - A deep fried seafood platter with fish, shrimp, calamari and fried yucca. Even their small size platter was absolutely massive and was too much food for two people. We could not finish it. This is a very rich dish and is great for seafood lovers. 2) Tallarin Verde - I have had better tasting versions of this Peruvian green spaghetti. It tasted slightly bland and it felt like they went too light on the cheese, spinach and basil. However, it was a generous size. 3) Pollo Empanizado - This piece of breaded fried chicken was excellent. It was super flat and the breading was perfectly crispy. And like everything else we had, the piece of chicken was huge. Don Alex is a great option for a Peruvian restaurant. I have been to other ones that did have slightly better tasting food, but this place makes up for it with huge portions.

Quarter Rotisserie chicken with Rice and Beans and Green Sauce

Wanted a quick lunch and walked into this small restaurant for takeout. Ordered a Quarter Rotisserie chicken (dark meat), with rice and beans. Waited for over 20 minutes for my order as there's dine-in customers to tend to. Two staffs working the front end were a bit frazzled and overwhelmed with the orders. I waited outside the restaurant since there's no place to stand. After a bit of a wait, I finally got my order. Rotisserie chicken tasted good, goes so well with that special green sauce. Rice and beans were also well seasoned and smothered with that delicious green sauce. Not bad for lunch meal ($8.5)

Came across this restaurant, and decided to do take-out. I ordered a Lomo Saltado over rice - big portions, on the pricier end, good flavors, but overcooked beef. I also ordered a fried fish over rice - the portion of the rice to fish ratio is off. The fish was nicely fried, but lacking some flavor. Overall, a good spot if you were craving Peruvian food.

Update: 9/24/2021 Turns out the restaurant had been closed due to damage from the hurricane about 2 weeks ago but it is now open. My favorites from this place which I pick up To Go are the rotisserie chicken and a side order of tostones. The price can't be beat compared to various local Latin places serving the same in the neighborhood, at just under $18. The flavors aren't overpowering and the accompanying green sauce is just right spicy. Note update regarding payment, credit card payment accepted for orders greater than $20. Anything under $20 is cash only. Review from 9/10/2021: Stopped by on Friday Evening and the restaurant was closed. Restaurant phone number was routing to a 908 (NJ?) cell phone number with no answer. No note on the restaurant door to say whether it was closed or under renovations, etc.

Small little family-owned restaurant off of Queen's Boulevard... they offer you nuts and a spicy dip as an appetizer, which was an interesting addition to the meal because the menu didn't offer much of anything special. I ordered the calamari and the flavor was good but it was strange that they did not have a dipping sauce for it. My friend ordered the chicken and rice and she said it was very good but we all agreed that it was something that could be easily made at home and didn't offer any culture. I would like to come back and try their fish soup! That looked amazing!

Certainly enjoyed my Sunday lunch here this past weekend! The sangria was good and strong here, which is a big plus, and the chimichurri sauce was a standout. I could've had an entire gallon on that amazing sauce. My companion and I got mixed chicken beef over noodles and egg, steak, fries and rice. Really just delicious. The food came out fast, the service was nice, the food wasnt over priced, and even after we were clearly done we sidnt feel pressure to leave right away. What a great gem off of Queens Boulevard in Rego Park. Would definitely come here again!

When we arrived, there were only two groups ahead of us, and the manager appeared to be handling seating. As time passed, it became clear that my party should have been next. Instead, another group walked in after us, and I watched as a table was cleaned and prepared for five people. I approached the manager to confirm whether we were being seated next. He acknowledged that I was right, admitted he remembered speaking with me earlier, but said the table was for five people. Despite that, he still seated the other party before us. By this point, our wait was well over 20 minutes. I even confirmed that the other group did not have a reservation--which would have been the only explanation that made sense. I've worked in the restaurant industry for over 20 years, and this kind of oversight completely ruins the experience. It's the simple things that matter. To make matters worse, yet another party walked in and was seated immediately. At that point, it felt intentional. Rather than assume the worst, I chose to leave. I will not be returning.

The friendly employee checked if I ordered from the kiosk, and I did. After 5 minutes or so, my order was ready and I took it to go. Dishes we've had include: - Half Chicken: $9.50; $10.34 with tax. The chicken and accompanying green sauce are above average; 4 stars out of 5. The chicken is flavorfully marinated and moist, and the green sauce has a little heat to it. - The Sampler: $16.99; $18.59 with tax. The most flavorful component of this dish was the chicken. The rice was on the mushy side. The ceviche was OK but the proteins didn't quite have the right textures. - Aeropuerto Special: $15.25; $16.60 with tax. OK; 3 stars out of 5. A mixture of thin lo mein noodles and rice with some roast pork, chicken, and shrimp. The dish seemed to have a decent wok hei, which was confusing because the chicken rice from the Sampler was on the mushy side. This dish would be much better with more proteins, and the wok hei suggests that the restaurant has untapped potential. - Papa Rellena: $8.95; $9.74 with tax. OK; 3 stars out of 5. Stuffed deep fried potatoes that seemed factory-made, instead of house-made. Atmosphere, Service, Other: The restaurant is casual, clean, and comfortable for dining in, with a mix of regular tables and booth-style seating. Those who choose to dine-in should order food at the counter, receive a number placard, and find a place to sit. Staff will bring plates, utensils, and later, one's food and drink; and will clear the table when your party is finished eating. Service is notably upbeat. Suggested tips are based on pre-tax subtotals, and start at an affordable 12%. Overall ticket time (the time between placing an order and having that order served) is reasonable. By contrast, Bayside Chicken Lovers often requires that orders be placed in advance to minimize wait time. The restroom is adequately maintained, but oddly pipes in music louder than in the main dining area. Simple Peruvian is a couple of storefronts away from Kora, which is a superb place for dessert afterwards.

It was a…read moreSaturday around 10 p.m., and finding an open place to eat at that hour was not easy, so this felt like a practical option on the way home. I live in New Jersey, and I knew that if I didn't eat somewhere near the airport, I was probably not going to eat at all that night. We ordered papa a la huancaína, a tamal, and leche de tigre, and the total came to about $48, which Its affordable by the area standards. Peruvian food is not necessarily cheap, so my issue was not mainly the price. My issue was the quality and the care behind the food. Its important to note here I am Peruvian, so I say this with real knowledge of the cuisine and with disappointment, not malice. The papa a la huancaína came with about four or five potato pieces, half an egg, one lettuce leaf, and no olive. Quantity-wise, the potatoes were fine, but the sauce told the whole story. It barely tasted like ají amarillo, and the flavor felt muted and commercial, like it was made more for cost control than for enjoyment. Huancaína sauce should have character, richness, and that unmistakable Peruvian flavor. This one felt flat. The tamal was decent in flavor, so I will give credit there, but it had only one slice of pork, no egg, and very little ají. It was a good size, but still did not feel worth the price. Again, it felt like the ingredients were being stretched too far. The most disappointing item was the leche de tigre. This is a dish that deserves much more respect because for many people, ceviche and related dishes are among the most recognized parts of Peruvian cuisine. This preparation did not feel delicate or authentic. It tasted like corners were cut. As someone who knows Peruvian food and has worked in restaurants before, I understand that using enough lime to properly prepare fish is expensive in the U.S. But that is exactly the point: if you are going to serve this dish, then do it right. If not, don't present it as something special. $21 for this? Honestly, I felt CHEATED. What frustrated me most is that this restaurant clearly has potential. The decor is nice, ready for selfies and Instagram pictures; you can tell effort was put into the presentation of the space. But to me, it felt like more attention went into ambiance than into the food itself. My impression was that the restaurant is aimed more at people who are not very familiar with Peruvian food and may accept a more mediocre version of it. For someone who truly knows and loves Peruvian cuisine, this was disappointing. I've had much better Peruvian food in less polished places in New Jersey, especially in Paterson. The decor at Mixtura may be prettier, but the food I had there was, at best, low-end mediocre. I ate it because I was hungry and it was late, and I appreciate that they were open when I needed a meal. But I would not go back, even in the same situation again. If you are Peruvian or very familiar with authentic Peruvian food, this may not be the place for you. If you are simply craving something nearby and are not especially focused on authenticity or quality, then maybe it will work for you. But for me, this is a one-time visit only. Sorry, its a NO-GO for a second visit.

We shared the ceviche mixto, arroz con mariscos, and a dulce de leche dessert with tulle and cookies. The appetizer and entrée were excellent; the ceviche mixto was incredibly fresh, and the seafood in the arroz was perfectly cooked, with rice that was well-seasoned and flavorful. Unfortunately, the ice cream in the dessert was grainy, as if it had been sitting too long. This could have easily been a five-star experience. I wouldn't have held the dessert against them, but the service fell short. When we arrived, the server was on her phone and minimally attentive. Communication was a bit difficult, especially when asking about desserts which weren't on the menu. We had moved a candle from another table because it was so dark, and although she noticed, she didn't offer assistance. After dropping off our food, she didn't check on us at all and remained up front on her phone. She did inform us ahead of time that the credit card machine wasn't working, so payment would need to be cash or Zelle, which was fine. However, when we paid in cash, she didn't return with change, we had to ask for it, and she then disappeared to the back to retrieve it. The whole process was awkward.
