New management has upgraded the place and it looks so much better. Staff is friendly and helpful. The menu is small but diverse. Ona precious occasion we tried the Jalea and it was very good. The encebollado was well made and tart. The chicken and carne guisada were very nice. Nice portions too. They now serve drinks!

I love ordering here, food always so fresh and amazing, the service is nice and ver attentive, love this place!!!!!!!!!

Don Pollo Metropolitan got a complete makeover . I recently visited this restaurant after its makeover, and I was thoroughly impressed! The space is now incredibly cozy yet still comfortable, with a perfect balance of modern design and warm, welcoming touches. The ambiance sets the perfect tone for enjoying a meal. As for the food, it's a true highlight! You have to try to understand.

When Dracula asks you to lunch and you step along the path away from Borgo Pass and continue north to dine at what was once many times and for many years a multitude of assorted food eatery's, so there is a palatable haunted hesitation. So my friend does look like Dracula and this is a nickname clad neighborhood and everyone's got one and in my writing mind, there is only a small gulf between fact and fiction so it only reasons to me to use nickery names along the way. A cheery young fellow with prim governess inquired about my meal pleasure "chicken, steak or seafood" to which I replied in kind "steak and seafood sound delightful" the finger of his darted upon the Tallarin Verde - a Peruvian pasta with grilled steak and a golden colored baked potato. Drax ordered the Ceviche De Pescado and we split the order which was prepared and plated and served quickly. Still paying last night's piper, I purchased a few 8oz bottles of red and white wine from next door careful to keep my shenanigans to the hip as two families set themselves like a pair of parenthesis around my table and their little buggers found my peach button down a wonder of their attention. Perhaps it was the creamy verde green sauce I dropped that was now dribbling down between button and button like lava doing the Streif at Kuttsbuhel, the contrast was striking. Thin profile and packed with flavor, the steak was splendid but I got the fatty end, so carving out that section was sad but I could see the seasoning very well upon it's translucency. And even though I try to avoid different foods touching, the wetish pesto made no mark upon the beef which made me happy, come on, let's get happy.. Server switch and the pretty lass turned her hand as if holding a knob asking about the spice volume for our Ceviche and Drax motioned with his own air knob that "somewhere in the middle was fine" as an acoustical version The Sound of Silence was playing with windpipes -- not in my head, it was actually playing over the sound system. The purchase of dinners and lunches is one of my more expensive vices, minus narcotics, that I find myself indulging in -- but all told -- the prices were quite reasonable -- the lunches unfortunate expense will be dry-cleaning my Italian shirt which was aslop with the various reminders of my late lunch with Dracula.

I have always thought "wouldn't it be nice to have a Peruvian spot on Metropolitan?" and lo and behold, here comes Don Pollo. I love Peruvian food because of the various cultural influences in its cuisine. Not to mention slamming, delicious juicy chicken. Had to order the combo meal as I always do at Peruvian spots. It's so worth it for $33. The Combo Don Pollo comes with a whole chicken, salad, salchipapa (french fries with sliced hot dog), fried rice, and maduros (sweet plantain). The order was ready when we arrived. The staff was friendly and the food was still nice and hot when we dug into it. Chicken - this was divine! Flavorful skin. Unbelievably tender, well-cooked and juicy. It was perfect with the green sauce. Just *chef's kiss.* Salad - standard salad. Nothing out of the ordinary. Dressing was good. Salchipapa - can't go wrong with this dish. It is LOVED by my kids. Fried rice - thought it was a basic fried rice but was pleased with the addition of chicken. Maduros - one of my favorite dishes. Must have with your meal. Overall, we were quite happy with the food. Glad they opened a location in the area. It's a great family-friendly meal so everyone is satisfied. Looking forward to trying more dishes here.

I ordered from Don Pollo twice and it did not disappoint. However, the consistency was a little off, but the overall food still delicious. The combo came with 1 whole chicken, a salad, rice, French fries with hot dogs, and sweet plantains. I was very pleased with the food from don pollo and will order from here again.

    Seasoned well, but tiny! $15

We got hungry while running errands and didn't know what to eat, so when we passed by Peruvian, we decided to give Don Pollo a shot! I believe there are multiple locations, but we went to the one by Metropolitan Avenue. There is dine-in available as well as takeout. We ordered: chicken soup, the Don Pollo Combo, and the Tallarin Verde (Peruvian Steak and pasta). The Don Pollo Combo is $33 and includes one whole chicken, a salad, Peruvian fried rice, maduros (sweet plantains), and salchipapas (french fries with cut up slivers of hot dogs). Peruvian restaurants are of course known for their chicken and their sauces--and they did not disappoint! Their green sauce was good, not too spicy, there was a honey-mustardy sauce, as well as a garlic sauce dressing to go with the salad. All the sauces are great if you guys love sauce. The chicken fried rice was flavorful, and distinctly Peruvian--with notes of ginger (?) And other spices that give it a unique taste. The chicken was juicy and flavorful on its own, as well as with the paired green sauce. The salad was plentiful, with iceberg lettuce, broccoli, shaved carrots, tomatoes, cucumber, and half an avocado. I was not fond of how soggy the french fries and hot dogs were, but this was for takeout so if you have this in the restaurant it might be different. I crisped them as well as the maduros up in my air fryer and we were good to go! The major cons were with the chicken soup and the steak. My mother in-law is an amazing cook but since she was sick--we wanted to get her chicken soup. But as a seasoned chef, she had noticed that the chicken was store bought instead of from a vivero (like, live chicken farms, which they do have sprinkled around the city) and where other Peruvian restaurants have given us before. They did not cut the chicken so it was all one big piece, and it was too salty. The steak was seasoned very well, albeit looking nothing like the photo! As you can see from my photos, its a very small thin piece, it was a wonder why they asked how we would like it cooked. Keep in mind, at restaurants like these (non-steakhouses) you are going to get well done steaks EVERY time! Then again for $15, you kind of get what you pay for, so it's understandable. The green pasta that came with the steak--the special sauce here is just pesto guys xD Not sure why it's advertised as something Peruvian haha. But it was plentiful and tasty. The desserts were tasty as well, their tres leches cake was good, as well as their passion fruit cheesecake. Eating the cheesecake alone, it kind of didn't taste like cheesecake, but together it tasted pretty good. Overall a good experience, with a couple of needed improvements. Try it out and see what you guys think! :) If I could give it 3.5 stars I would!

Maduros - doesn't look good in the pic but so ripe and good!
    Essie L.

Ordered a quick bite around 9pm before I head home. The chicken was still hot after a 30 minute drive and the maduros were perfectly ripe. Perfect late night meal!

When we arrived, there were only two groups ahead of us, and the manager appeared to be handling seating. As time passed, it became clear that my party should have been next. Instead, another group walked in after us, and I watched as a table was cleaned and prepared for five people. I approached the manager to confirm whether we were being seated next. He acknowledged that I was right, admitted he remembered speaking with me earlier, but said the table was for five people. Despite that, he still seated the other party before us. By this point, our wait was well over 20 minutes. I even confirmed that the other group did not have a reservation--which would have been the only explanation that made sense. I've worked in the restaurant industry for over 20 years, and this kind of oversight completely ruins the experience. It's the simple things that matter. To make matters worse, yet another party walked in and was seated immediately. At that point, it felt intentional. Rather than assume the worst, I chose to leave. I will not be returning.

Would def come back. 5/5 chicha morada $6 - sour, sweet, spicy- the flavors hit in this order I believe, what a wonderful medley of flavors, great depth, salivating as I write this, i'd get this every time. In stark contrast, my friend said all she tastes is lime, but most of her taste buds must be dead, lol 4/5 Pulpo à la parilla $19- nice smoky, grilled flavor, a bit crispy, BEWARE of the super spicy sauce they give you on the side, we took 1 dip & our tongues burned for the next 10mins or so 4/5 ceviche mixto $24- very sour & really good, not watered down & bland like the Mexican restaurant we went to in New Rochelle (thank God) 3/5 dorada à la parrilla $37- ok, grilled, but not to perfection, has potential to be a 5/5: wish the skin was crispy, the fish itself needs more seasoning/flavor, the lime gave it most of the flavor, I don't think I'll get fish here again Desserts are all made in house (thank God): 4/5 torta de chocolate $10- was scared to get this since a lot of things labeled dark chocolate aren't actually dark enough to qualify as dark chocolate, this was a pleasant surprise, the chocolate fudge layers in the middle is where most of the sweetness is from, as well as the crunchy chocolate shavings on the exterior, the cake itself is dark, it's a good balance of ever so slightly bitter & sweet 5/5 lucumisu $10- so sweet, but so damn good, almost perfect! Wanna try fresh lucuma now. Tastes like caramel & maple syrup. This can be improved by using unsweetened cacao powder on top, instead of the super sweet chocolate shavings, to balance the sweetness with a bit of bitter, and to make it more authentic as a tiramisu. This is 1 of the rare times I rated a sweeter dessert higher than a less sweet dessert.

It was a…read moreSaturday around 10 p.m., and finding an open place to eat at that hour was not easy, so this felt like a practical option on the way home. I live in New Jersey, and I knew that if I didn't eat somewhere near the airport, I was probably not going to eat at all that night. We ordered papa a la huancaína, a tamal, and leche de tigre, and the total came to about $48, which Its affordable by the area standards. Peruvian food is not necessarily cheap, so my issue was not mainly the price. My issue was the quality and the care behind the food. Its important to note here I am Peruvian, so I say this with real knowledge of the cuisine and with disappointment, not malice. The papa a la huancaína came with about four or five potato pieces, half an egg, one lettuce leaf, and no olive. Quantity-wise, the potatoes were fine, but the sauce told the whole story. It barely tasted like ají amarillo, and the flavor felt muted and commercial, like it was made more for cost control than for enjoyment. Huancaína sauce should have character, richness, and that unmistakable Peruvian flavor. This one felt flat. The tamal was decent in flavor, so I will give credit there, but it had only one slice of pork, no egg, and very little ají. It was a good size, but still did not feel worth the price. Again, it felt like the ingredients were being stretched too far. The most disappointing item was the leche de tigre. This is a dish that deserves much more respect because for many people, ceviche and related dishes are among the most recognized parts of Peruvian cuisine. This preparation did not feel delicate or authentic. It tasted like corners were cut. As someone who knows Peruvian food and has worked in restaurants before, I understand that using enough lime to properly prepare fish is expensive in the U.S. But that is exactly the point: if you are going to serve this dish, then do it right. If not, don't present it as something special. $21 for this? Honestly, I felt CHEATED. What frustrated me most is that this restaurant clearly has potential. The decor is nice, ready for selfies and Instagram pictures; you can tell effort was put into the presentation of the space. But to me, it felt like more attention went into ambiance than into the food itself. My impression was that the restaurant is aimed more at people who are not very familiar with Peruvian food and may accept a more mediocre version of it. For someone who truly knows and loves Peruvian cuisine, this was disappointing. I've had much better Peruvian food in less polished places in New Jersey, especially in Paterson. The decor at Mixtura may be prettier, but the food I had there was, at best, low-end mediocre. I ate it because I was hungry and it was late, and I appreciate that they were open when I needed a meal. But I would not go back, even in the same situation again. If you are Peruvian or very familiar with authentic Peruvian food, this may not be the place for you. If you are simply craving something nearby and are not especially focused on authenticity or quality, then maybe it will work for you. But for me, this is a one-time visit only. Sorry, its a NO-GO for a second visit.

We shared the ceviche mixto, arroz con mariscos, and a dulce de leche dessert with tulle and cookies.
