It had been a few years since we last visited El Gaucho-Seattle! The restaurant is now in a new location in the Union Stables building. This is a vintage brick building facing Elliot Bay on Western Ave. a few blocks from El Gaucho's former space. Gone is that funky blue facade and El Gaucho sign. The new space is amazing with high ceilings, an energetic bar area, an open visible kitchen, a large primary dining area, and several private dining spots. From the valet and front of the house to the waiters, El Gaucho provided a welcoming environment! There was only one valet personnel working this Friday night so we had to wait a bit before he returned from the parking area to take our key. Once inside, we were seated immediately. Our server, Sarah and colleagues, were very personable and welcoming, and provided us with exceptional service which made our experience great! El Gaucho sets a romantic mood with its dimly lit interior, white table cloths, tailored waiters, and pianist playing in the background. We started our dinner with glasses on sauvignon blanc and blood orange old fashioned, and a dozen local oysters which were delicious! Next up were our entrees. My wife chose a couple of appetizers, the Wicked Shrimp (which had a nice spicy sauce) and the Diver Sea Scallops which included pommes puree, picatta topping, and lemon beurre blanc. Both of these dishes were excellently prepared and tasted great! Before arriving, I had already decided I was going to try the Canadian Lobster Tail (for those who have followed my reviews are aware, we are pescatarians). At El Gaucho there are several opportunities to enjoy a tableside presentation (caesar salad, flaming sword, Steak Diane, Chateaubriand, baked potato, and a couple desserts). So, the 18 oz Lobster Tail (accompanied with drawn butter and lemon) and baked potato were excellent prepared and presented tableside! We didn't do dessert on this occasion but definitely will on our next visit. We were presented with an after dinner ensemble of grapes, pears, and crackers. I must say the execution in the kitchen for our dinner was excellent as each entree was seasoned appropriately and not overcooked. Kudos to Executive Chef Joe and his team!! The only disappointment is that those wonderful views of Elliot Bay are no longer viewable from inside the new location but that's okay because the food, service, and inside ambiance are first rate. read more

Just saw my last review was not at the new location and over 8 years old. So, time for an update as we've been to the new location for a wine dinner, a few cocktail classes followed by a sharing a dinner in the bar. The new location is just north of the Pike Market and Cloudburst Brewery on Western Ave where parking can be challenging. The great news is El Gaucho has valet parking so I drive up to door and let them handle that problem. The interior of course is low-light so get ready if it's late afternoon before sunset for you to go blind from bright light to darkness which is one of the things that makes El Gaucho special. We like to go to special events at El Gaucho where valet is complementary then follow the event with a meal. We have found that ordering the Chateubriand 20oz and share to be the best value and have never been disappointed as always perfectly cooked. The cocktails are top quality and service is impecible. Another plus is you can join their Revelers Club and get points, invites to special events and redeem points toward meal cost. read more

This was my first time visiting this location. I usually go to Tacoma or Aqua but decided to do something different. Service and food were excellent just like every El Gaucho establishment. Only complaint was the valet. Upon arriving valet was nowhere to be found so I left my Porsche in-front of the restaurant and gave my keys to the host. My car was moved up about 5 feet up from where I was originally parked. After dinner valet was still nowhere to be found. Checked in with the host again and you could see valet practically sprinting from down the street to give me my keys. Felt bad for him and gave him an $8 tip. If valet is struggling someone needs to help them! read more

This is a personal favorite for me! I've been to the old location almost 20 years ago, and it was time to revisit them in the new location. The atmosphere is amazing, with the dimly lit dining room and wine bottles displayed in towers and walls throughout the restaurant. The wait staff is beyond top notch. The very knowledgeable staff was ever present and able to assist with any questions we had. The meal was incredible, but the drink of choice was a blood orange old fashioned. I can say it might have been the best old fashioned I've drank in my adult life. The steak was cooked to perfection and worth every penny! I enjoyed the peppercorn NY cut. This steak was about $89, but they do have less expensive cuts like the baseball, which comes in at $57. The cost will be understood when having this dining experience. You can plan to spend $300 plus for a good date night. Again, worth it. 5 stars. read more

We celebrate my birthday most years here. I love their OLD FASHION way of greeting you at the door and big, giant table side service. It is a blend between nostalgic, traditional and classic and it always feels like a celebration whenever you visit. The valet is always exceptional. They hired the nicest people to run the valet. They are a great hello and an awesome thoughtful goodbye as well. They helped my young daughter locate her Uber home. I really appreciate this added touch as parking is quite difficult and they make the experience quite lovely. The New York steak was, OF COURSE, out of this world. The potatoes --- when I asked my waiter -- "What is the secret you make them with?" He said so cutely, " Butter and then some more butter!" OMG, he is not lying and they are heavenly! I road that butter train hard. The wine menu while expensive, and expansive is worth talking about. My hubby and I know wines and love wines and have drank many a good wine -- we scoured the menu ... and to our surprise we found something absolutely delicious that did not break the bank. We ordered a bottle of their house signature wine... especially when we found out that it was made by Long Shadows out of Walla Walla. We about died. We thought they should advertise the wine maker. What a treat. What a beautiful Long Shadow wine is hiding in that El Gaucho bottle. We will get this every time. Look for it on the menu. I was surprised that we could find our price point on that fancy list, but we did. It was advantageous to buy the bottle rather than the $25 dollar glasses of wine. SO don't despair. I was a bit bummed that we sat in the far back extra room (that was not decorated or special in any way -- next year they should pour some love into the ambiance back there)... it's more our style to sit by the Christmas tree near the piano, but it was busy and my birthday is near Christmas -- so it often times doesn't work out. We moved to the bar later and got to have our ambiance and listen to the piano player play beautiful holiday music. We loved that moment of our evening and made it special. The young man who is the bartender made a fanstastic lemon drop - and he was talented at pouring good drinks, but I think he must have been serving on an off night -- as he seemed annoyed and grumpy. I don't usually experience that kindo f service at El Gaucho - so we are chalking it up to an unusual night for him. I have been a regular at El Gaucho since 1999 and I LOVED the "famous" bartender JOE at the original place. When you walked in he made you feel so special... so EXTRAORDINARY! You knew bartending was his LIFE and he lit the place up with his amazing over the top joy and happiness. He truly celebrated people and loved his regulars. He loved serving people with his generose spirit at the bar. We mostly ate at the bar, because he was so fun. I go to El Gaucho still today, because OF HIM back in the 2000's! I wish his energy and spirit still filled the place! He is irreplaceable I am sure, but his sweetness is surely missed. We came home with leftovers. The steaks were perfection. My daughter loved her "fancy-pants" meal and it was a giant splurge -- but well worth it and another night filled with incredible memories. Thank you El Gaucho. read more

Went here for a presentation so the menu had just a few choices. I'm not much of a meat eater so chose the mushroom orzo. Many people ordered the beef. Many people didn't eat much of it when they got to the inner parts of this fist sized hunk of meat that was still bright red. I mean, it looked cooked on the outside but get past the first layer and not cooked at all. Ugh, I almost gagged seeing all that rare cooked meat just sitting uneaten on most everyone's plates. Customer service was amazing, the atmosphere is delightful, and every bite of food was mouth-watering. For starters, I tried the tenderloin Diablo and fried calamari, both of which were delicious. I highly recommend the Steak Diane, which you must split with another person. It was the best steak I've had, with a delicious sauce including mushrooms. It also comes with mashed potatoes and asparagus. In addition, the Guacho Mac & Cheese is delectable, as well as the scallops potatoes. Now, 3 stars for the night we went, but make no mistake: this is a top shelf kind of place with a tremendous atmosphere and service. Just this night, their execution in the kitchen lacked in spots: Disappointment #1: The steaks. The steak pictured is not the one I sampled. But that steak pictured is a rare steak with a sear effect. The one I sampled was from a steak done medium and seared. Now, I've eaten thousands of steaks - and been to about any top tier place around the US. This steak was done with a majorly bitter burn taste. Not a "kinda going bitter....but way way way bitter taste. - Miss #2: The risotto. Not too recognizable as any risotto version I've ever had. Not sure what happened to this batch - but it was actually awful. Now for the good: Salads: with the Caesar or the wedge: both excellent. The bacon on the wedge was an excellent bacon. Scalloped potatoes: Probably the best dish of the night. However they make those - those are a best version of scalloped I've had most anywhere. French Onion soup: a very good French onion. Crab cakes: you're in Seattle and fresh seafood...they got this one right. Crème brûlée: an excellent traditional take on a classic dessert. All and all....this place will be a great restaurant option in Seattle...despite their major misses.....they had plenty of great execution on other dishes. But do be prepared to pay and it's not a budget friendly place: - I did (not) get an entree; I had a soup and salad. No alcohol on our tab. And the risotto was taken off the bill even though we didn't ask for that. Then, they added the tip: (3) people: $411. There's how come I go with 3 stars. For that kind of money; you shouldn't miss (or you should notice how burned the steak is) on something like a steak. Something they are preparing hundreds and hundreds of a week. If 10 stars were possible, El Gaucho would receive that rating. My wife and I have crazy busy schedules and we were not able to go out and celebrate Valentine's Day. We did manage to book a reservation for the Tuesday after and we were really looking forward to our visit here. I had been to the old El Gaucho many years ago and learned that they have a new location since 2020. They relocated to a new downtown home in the union stables building. This historic site once housed 300 horses who had the job of pulling Seattle's street cars and fire engines. The building has retained many of its distinctive features and the inside is laid out very well. There is plenty of parking nearby. Our waiter, Back/Boch, warmly greater us, and gave us a rundown on the history of this location. We scouted out the menu in advance and decided on fried calamari for our appetizer. It was the perfect size portion and the calamari was tasty. For our entrées, I had the bone in ribeye, which was 18 ounces of perfectly grilled medium rare. My wife enjoyed grilled scampi pasta, which was a generous portion and the shrimp were perfectly done. Throughout the meal, the servers kept our glasses topped off And appeared quickly when we had a question. For dessert, we enjoyed the crème brûlée, which was anointed with fresh berries and mint. As with the rest of the meal, it was incredible. We watched as they prepared bananas Foster table side for an adjacent table.Outstanding presentation and it looked amazing. Have to remember to try that next visit. The food was outstanding, and the ambience was incredible. What truly made this meal special was our server. He was extremely kind and considerate and took the time to visit with us. He's been working for El gaucho for a number of years and really enjoys what he does. The entire staff has to be complimented for their outstanding customer service. I have eating countless times at the Portland location, first time at the Seattle for a memorable bday Dinner. Ambience and service is first rate plus. Abundant menus of great drinks, amazing sides and a made at table Caesars can't be missed of course you come for the steak! Must have sides are the sweet corn, Mac cheese and mash potatoes and every steak here is first rate. The after dinner cheese and fruit plate has shrunk considerably but given the quantity of food we often never were able to finish it. For BDay they offered us a wonderful dessert to go. My wife and I stopped in to have our 39th wedding anniversary dinner. We each ordered the ribeye steak which was phenomenal. Cooked to perfection. We also ordered sides of scalp potatoes and grilled corn. Also great. The service was super fantastic. Our server was on the spot and very kind. If I had any complaints at all about my experience, it would be that the restaurant itself is very noisy and loud. Also, they've decided to take on the new policy of charging a service charge of 20% no matter what. And that does not go to the server it gets distributed. Then you have to tip your server another 20%. And then there was taxes. We ended up spending over $150 just on service charges and tip. I think that is so wrong. The total came to over $450 and I think that's enough money spent to not have to charge a mandatory service fee. Just my opinion. The food and surface was so great. I did tip well because our server deserved it. I will be back because experience is incredible. And I know ahead of time now that they're gonna go to me for another 20% even if I don't want to. If you can afford this place, I would highly recommend it. read more

I have been to El Gaucho many times at three locations (and in there Reveler's Club), but attended a special even there and wanted to write a review on that. It was a really spectacular meal. This was the Pepper Bridge & Amavi Cellars Wine Dinner. It was very well organized in a separate room. We were greeted with a nice cocktail and an appetizer that was excellent. The Pepper Bridge/Amavi Director of Winemaking Jean-Francois Pellet was there to talk about the wines along with El Gaucho Executive Chef Kirin Chun to talk about the food. It was great hearing them speak. Needless to say the food and wines were awesome. It started with scallops and beets matched with a Pepper Bridge Sauvignon Blanc. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the beets were a very nice complement. The next course was a cassoulet along with Amazake sourdough. First, it can be odd to point out bread, but it was really outstanding (and sounded like it took a few days). Then the cassoulet was rich with beek, pork, and lamb--but really tasty. This was matched with an Amavi Syrah. Next course was Chantrelle Potato Gratin. This was a really original preparation and so delicious. It had stacks of thin layers, then the mushrooms were so good with it. This was matched with an Amavi Cab. After that was dry-aged Kagoshima ribeye (in tallow). This was another really unique course. The meat was really rich and flavorful and the Pepper B ridge cab matched absolutely perfect iwth it. For dessert, there was a velvet carrot cake. This was so delicious also, just incredible. This was matched with Pepper Bridge Trine, which I had never had before but loved. This was an absolutely wonderful experience. I strongly encourage others to sign up for these events. read more

I'm sort of slack-jawed at how mediocre the product is here. Hasn't always been this way. Did something change?? I was hunting for a good, solid, price-no-object steak somewhere in Seattle with a veggie to pair. I opted for the roasted Brussels sprouts and bone-in ribeye. The sprouts were the blandest sprouts I've had this side of the 21st century -- that should be like a softball right over the middle of the plate in 2025 America and it was a meager swing and a miss. Didn't even need a home run, but honesty that's at least a free pass to first base -- these got sent back to the dugout. You don't just dump ...I don't even know what it was... bacon bits??? ... on top and call it a side dish. The bone-in ribeye... not sure how you cook out all the moisture from a $92 med rare steak, but El Gaucho prevailed! You go for the ribeye because it's well-marbled and flavorful... no idea how they went so wrong, but I couldn't continue eating that abomination. ‍ My attitude might also be swayed just a bit by the obtuse patrons at the bar who seemed to think the wait staff would be following them home But nevertheless! The food was what I came for, and it was not it. Not it at all I was there on a Tuesday, so I'm not sure if that was industry night or not. I'll probably give it another shot at some point, but it's picked up the stink of inconsistency for me. You can't be a premium steakhouse and flop SO hard on a med rare ribeye no matter what day it is. read more

It has been almost 20 years since I last dined at El Gaucho. Back in Seattle for the weekend, I knew it was time to re-visit Seattle's premier local steakhouse. It moved to a new location in the Union Stables Building in 2021. I knew when my daughter and I arrived we were going to have an amazing evening. It started with the hostesses at the front desk and continued with Todd our server. He knew we were heading to the Metallica concert that evening and made sure everything arrived timely to our table. We both started with a martini, my daughter order gin, and I selecting vodka. The blue cheese olives that we requested were simply delicious. We first ordered a half dozen Oysters, followed by the Boned-In Ribeye, plus Baked Potatoes and Asparagus as sides. Each course was beautifully plated and prepared exactly as we requested. I was super impressed that Kirin Chun, the GM and Executive Chef, came by our table to personally slice our steak so it could be shared. I also have to commend Kirin and an assistant for prepping our potatoes. It was like they massaged the potato to ensure it was consistently soft and flaky. In terms of an unexpected treat, the piano player even played several Metallica hits, including Nothing Else Matters. I presume few diners in the room had any idea they were hearing music from one of our premier metal bands. It was a fantastic experience and makes me hungry for another trip to Seattle and El Gaucho. read more

If you want to experience a classic (and classy) steakhouse, El Gaucho is one of the best options in Seattle =) The atmosphere is perfect; dark, moody, quiet. The steaks are always phenomenal (and despite being quite adept at making a great steak at home, I'm reminded just why it makes sense to splurge and go out on occasion). Lastly, the service is incredible. They go above and beyond constantly. An example is it was my friend's bday and he had asked if they could make a (drink I never heard of). They were lacking one of the (esoteric) ingredients, but Spirits Captain (Simone Van Eeden) figured out how to make it, which required smoking lime juice (iirc). My friend was blown away at how perfect it came out (presented by it's crafter =) It's experiences like that that make a place worth the price! read more

We made a reservation at 6pm and arrived 30 minutes early. They had no issues with seating us right away. Service was exceptional from beginning to end. Our server Todd went over and beyond to ensure we had the best dining experience! Food was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend dining here and I really hope you are fortunate enough to get Todd as your server. Thank you Todd! I also had the pleasure of being escorted by a true gentleman to the ladies room by another server named Jimmy. He didn't just point me in the direction. We went here for my birthday tonight. I was expecting so much from this place. Upon arrival the concierge was nice and acknowledged it was my birthday. We got seated quickly and our server got our drinks quickly. But once we placed our apps, the service began to decline. Service was slower and we did not get our food in a timely manner. We waited a lot. We had our reservation at 545pm and didn't get out until 8pm! The table next to us got way better service. More attentive and their server and manager came to their table and asked how their meal was. Our server only came once to ask about our meal. It took forever to order dessert. Our server never acknowledged we had to wait so long and she made my husband move his chair so they could place their side table to make the cherries jubilee. While I understand there wasn't much room. She shouldn't have asked my husband to move his chair if the show wasn't happening yet. My husband had to sit sideways next to another table for over 10 mins. What really pissed me off was I did not get a comped dessert for my birthday. I ordered a dessert but most restaurants still comp a birthday dessert. They should have deducted my share of $17 for the cherries jubilee. Plus they automatically add a 20% service charge. We did not get our monies worth. It sucks that we can't give what we think the service deserves. If they suck, we still have to pay that percentage. It's not gratuity anymore. Also they do not accept Visa gift cards if there isn't a chip. That's dumb, it's still money. I did not see them offer Apple Pay either. What if the chip doesn't work on a card. So what then? Then you are screwed! The food was good but not great for the price and for the service we got. Very disappointed. The duck fries use to be good but I feel the recipe has changed. Also I think it's tacky when they put one piece of steak on your plate with no sides cuz they insist on charging you a side dish. A side dish cost as much as an appetizer! We went to check out their Seattle restaurant week special. It was $65 per person for a 3 course meal- appetizer, main, and dessert. We ordered a couple additional appetizers to start, We got ahi tuna tartare, shrimp ravioli and calamari. Ahi tuna was delicious and paired very well with their fried wonton chips. I was hoping to like the shrimp ravioli more. The flavor was all there but raviolis were a bit undercooked and cold and that ruined the dish. For our 3 course meal, we both started with scallops for app, baseball sirloin for main, and got two different desserts. Scallops were very well cooked and paired very well with the sauce. Desserts were a bit of a miss. I got the crème brûlée and my brother got their espresso cheesecake. It wasn't the worst dessert I've had but also wasn't the best. I would love to come back to try their regular menu and maybe I'll like the dishes a little more. Overall, it was good but not great. read more

El Gaucho Seattle does a phenomenal job going above and beyond in every aspect imaginable. The live music and candlelit tables make for the coziest ambiance. Our server, Luca, was attentive and as friendly as possible. We ordered the calamari and brussel sprouts, both of which were fresh and delicious. We asked to try a couple red wines and ultimately chose a pinot noir that complimented our dinner fabulously. Towards the end of our meal, Luca had noticed we were slowing down on the wine and although the bottle we ordered had been decanted, he managed to pour it from the wide-mouthed decanter back into the original bottle so we could enjoy the rest at home. That's not an easy feat! For our main course, we had the 8oz filet mignon and the steak El Gaucho. Each were to die for! Both juicy and tender. The steak El Gaucho came with a lobster medallion, asparagus, and a delicious creamy sauce. Most of our dinner conversation was spent raving about how good everything tasted. When I needed to use the restroom, our server politely escorted me there and, of course, it was just as clean and pristine as the rest of the restaurant. This steakhouse has really earned it's prestigious reputation. Our dining experience here truly was a highlight of our trip to Seattle. As a Portland native I'm excited to try their location in the Benson Hotel, but I'll admit I can't imagine it topping our experience at El Gaucho Seattle. read more

The food and experience at El Gaucho is always great with the flaming sword and table side service, but this location left something to be desired. The 3 chairs in the entry that felt like we were waiting to be called into the principal's office. Being led through the front of the open kitchen was cool, but half the walkway was used as storage for extra chairs, so watch your step, it is a little narrow and you may catch your dress on one of the overturned chairs with the legs up. Every server is not for every restaurant. Our off brand Chris Farley server spent most of the time air juggling at other tables. Luckily the rest of the staff was on point. He was the equivalent of the lady at The Golden Corral refilling your soda. There is an automatic 20% gratuity applied to your total. We gave our server at the Tacoma El Gaucho an extra 20% because he was flawless. We both went to the restroom after the meal and Chris was waiting outside the restroom like he assumed a dine and dash. He informed by boyfriend that he couldn't find my $75 Reveler's club birthday credit, so he just used my boyfriend's $50 credit (which all expire by the end of August and we were there for a special occasion, so unlikely to have another special occasion in the next 45 days) Then set our bill on the table and never returned for the payment. We had to take the bill to the hostess to pay and on our way out, everyone told us good night and we could have just kept walking out the door. Nice enough guy, but not for this level of service. This location seemed like a cleaner 13 coins. read more

As a member of the Revlers club we have tried both El Gauchos. We recently tried the new Seattle location for my upcoming birthday. The service is impeccable as always. The wait staff is on top of every detail. They are friendly, well informed and have great suggestions. We ordered 2 beef wellingtons ahead of time for a special meal. When we arrived we had rose petals on the table, signed birthday card and menus that said Happy Birthday on them. Great details. We started with the Wicked shrimp and table side Caesar salad. The shrimp is very spicy and very good. Just be prepared . The salad is prepared at your table with the story of how they make the ingredients and put the salad together. The salad is not to be skipped. For dinner we had two beef wellingtons, an 8oz filet mignon, and a 14oz New York strip. As sides we ordered the grilled street corn, table side baked potato (love the thought of someone fluffing your potato), and the scalloped potato's. Wellingtons were good for flavor and meet cut. The pastry was uncooked in most areas as it was not wrapped properly and the extra pastry was not cut off. Both steaks were great in cook and flavor. The fluffed baked potatoes were a hit as usual as was the street corn. The scalloped potatoes were sampled and left on the table. The flavor was lacking and no room was made for lackluster food. For dessert we shared the Madagascar vanilla ice cream and a creme brûlée. Both desserts were very good. The bill was around $600 with 2 beers a soda and a mocktail added in. Extras are the table garlic bread and the palate freshener plate they serve after the meal. It is made of fresh fruit, cheese and nuts. We will return to the Bellevue location and try their other restaurants. We would not recommend the Wellingtons nor the scalloped potatoes. read more

If you are celebrating, I definitely recommend this place. When I did the reservation online, I left a note that we're celebrating and I wanted a non alcoholic drink option. Upon our arrival, the hosts were great and we just needed to wait for couple minutes then they took us to our table. The table was so special, real petal roses and a birthday card from El Gaucho Team. Then we sat and got our menu. To my surprise, they even had printed our celebration on the menu, how nice is that. We ordered: - it was a bit tart and refreshing. For a mocktail or how they call it here zero-proof cocktail, this was pretty close to an actual cocktail taste. - squid ink dumplings: the dumplings were on the al dente side which is not my preference but it was good. The pork flavor just burst into mouth with a hint of shrimp. It was a good balance - tuna tartar: this was good but as someone who travel to Hawaii pretty often, the tuna did not hit as fresh but the ingredients that came with it (olive, pineapple...) saved it. - Steak El Gaucho: delightful. It was my favorite of all we ordered. The béarnaise (sauce that came with it) was just the perfect sauce for the dish. The meat was tender and it was just like butter in the mouth (as our server said) - Ribeye: if you like some fat in your steak then this is the one. This was good as well but once you take a bite of the el Gaucho steak, this was just fine. -mushroom risotto: very creamy and fulfilling -mashed potato: it was entertaining to see them prepare it next to you Great experience overall and definitely recommend the steak el Gaucho. read more

Absolutely unforgettable night! Mock was amazing, he was so funny and attentive. Gabby was amazing she helped us pick out some of the most delicious wine. Get the tableside Caesar!
