Had to go to Louisiana to eat my favorite Mexican food. It was so popular in Texas for decades. Now they are gone!! I love you El Chicos!!

Visited El Chico Friday for early dinner, around 4. Inside is dimly lit. After ordering food & drinks, we realized why the dim lighting. Walls & railing separating booths from the bar area or other booths have a layer of dirt & dust. When our order arrived, we tempted fate and tried each. Fish tacos were more like microwave cardboard covered in an unknown white sauce. Mexican Flag combo was also heavy on tasteless sauce covering tasteless enchiladas, rice , & beans. Use caution. My husband and I ate dinner here last night and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We ordered the guacamole app and it was made tableside! Fresh and delicious. I ordered 2 fish tacos (mahi mahi) and they were prepared perfectly with a side order of black beans and rice. The black beans were piping hot and delicious - I found a bay leaf with the beans and was pleasantly surprised. My meal came with 3 lime wedges which was great. We are from Upstate New York and there are very few good Mexican restaurants there, so we really enjoyed our meal. Thank you! read more

I sit here and read the one star reviews and can only think this place had some issue a month or so ago. All I can say is my visit was Great. Maria our server was hand down one of the very best servers I have had in a very long time. I travel all over the US so I eat at many different restuarants and Maria is top notch. Ask for her when you come. I had the burrito bowl and it was incredable. The flavor was spot on. Run, walk or crawl but come eat lunch here and ask for Maria. read more

Ordered take out and it was, literally, the worst mexican food i've ever had. I was very disappointed. Rice tasted soapy and weird (can't even explain it) and the beef tamales were not good at all. Ended up just throwing the whole meal out. Their guac isn't bad though. Not sure if maybe i just ordered wrong, but probably won't be back to find out. read more

Had a great meal with friendly service! Destiny was ever so cheerful and attentive, even though there were two active toddlers in our party. She really had a great customer service vibe and you could tell she was not pretending! I always ask for the extra hot salsa and man it is! Tortilla chips arrived promptly at our table hot and crispy, cantina style. She brought kids a balloon with a cookie tied onto it ! Nice touch! Really reasonable prices and always good food! Great atmosphere, greeted promptly and happily. Excellent service, prompt, food hot. Portions are perfectly sized (doggie bag possible). The apple pie with Cinnamon ice cream warmed and fired up! Yum! Beware though, ordered the huge house margarita with salt, tasted like margarita mix and salt. I had two at 5'3 and 160 and nothing...I always get a little buzz off one but two and nothing! I want to have a well made drink when I go to a Mexican restaurant. Everything in our world is going up and I can't enjoy my $10.00 Margarita??? The non men I went with would not let me speak up. First time at this eatery. We had the table side guacamole, chicken chimichanga and the steak and shrimp fajitas. The guacamole was ok but a bit under seasoned. The chimichanga was good but the queso was just so-so. The shrimp and steak fajitas were awful. Everything was over cooked and the frijoles were cold in their cup. On the positive side, the manager was very accommodating. She took the fajita meal off the bill, and provided an apple pie desert. This desert was outstanding! They put the apple pie on a hot sizzle plate then top it with cinnamon ice cream and a Mexican brandy cream sauce. OMG! So good! Kudos to the manager for making everything right! Best Mexican around. For us getting the spices right makes Mexican food stand out and El Chico does just that. We both had the Mucho. Usually a lunch special for a $1.50 more you can have it for dinner. This plate is a great sampling of dishes. It includes Spanish rice, refried beans, one enchilada and one burrito. Covered in a rich sauce and melted cheese. A crunchy taco is included. Here's the best part re orders are free because it's all you can eat. If you have room the desserts look delicious. We love their sweet tea. The atmosphere is so pretty with lots of colored lights and Mexican music in the background. It's just a nice place to sit and talk with chips and salsa. read more

I am from Southern California.... So my definition and review of this "Mexican" food is going to be a bit more critical than the standard Floridian's experience. First off, the staff here is decent. They are trying to do the best they can with the ongoing labor shortage the seems to be impacting many restaurants. No complaints there. The food here is really Tex-mex... an apparent favorite of east-coasters... not mine. There are a lot of weird sauces and combinations that don't exist in true Mexican fare. Frankly everything is off a bit... so much so I don't know where to start. The food is eatable but not Mexican. Mushrooms and chili con-carne are not found in true Mexican cuisine. read more

I had the food delivered and it was really tasty. I ordered the Mexican Flag Combination. The variety of the dishes included were very good. It was packed well and included chips and salsa as an added bonus. I've noticed other Mexican restaurants aren't including the chips and salsa and this was a nice touch. I was taken here on a date and didn't like it one bit. I ordered the beef tacos and the meat was horrible. It was dry and greasy ground beef with no seasoning whatsoever. I don't know what they're thinking by marketing their queso. It's not fame worthy by any standard. The lighting is weird and their birthday song is an ear sore. My husband and I were on our way back from Daytona with our dogs, we wanted to stop at a pet friendly spot. This is Florida, not our former state California, so it can be hard to find a place that allows dogs. While I drove, my husband searched on his phone and found El Chico. We sat out on the patio, the tables do have umbrellas, but no building overhang. So it was pretty sunny out there, I recommend you wear sunscreen and bring a hat! We put our 2 little dogs in their puppy stroller so we could eat peacefully. The menu at this establishment was quite large. I actually ended up just ordering a basic quesadilla and rice, it was tasty. My husband had a larger meal, which he enjoyed. Was looking for an Italian place and couldn't pass up a Mexican restaurant. After being seated I was greeted by Courtney who was maybe the nicest person I've ever met. Ordered my standard chips and queso, guacamole, two beef enchiladas one cheese beans and rice. The food came out lightning fast and was hot and delicious. The mole was fantastic and the beef was seasoned perfect. This may be one of my favorite New Mexican restaurants ever!! They serve yellow queso which was fantastic, and they make white queso to order, which was also delicious. Love this place!!! read more

Im sorry but the food here is absolutely offensive. The staff and atmosphere were nice, but this is downright horrible mexican food.

We ate outside at the patio because I had my pups with me the staff was super friendly and attentive. The manager even came out to talk to us and give a bowl of water and a little piece of chicken to the pups. We got the guacamole which is made fresh at the table and split a combo meal. Between the guac and the combo I split with my mom I was so stuffed. I ordered a desert to go because I couldn't pass a sopapilla up. If I'm in the area would defiantly go again. read more

Well, I would have thought that big franchise is like this would be in great competition with local Mexican restaurants. The cost of doing business should be a lot lower for these chains. I guess the franchise fees here are just way too high to get a good meal for a good price. Tonight there was a fairly modest crowd and only one person seating, bartending and serving. I ordered tamales which were hot on the outside but lukewarm to room temperature in the middle, indicating that they were reheated and not fresh. Can't imagine why spending $12 on tamales would ever be okay. Initially, the service was okay. She got my order and my drink in right away. it didn't take long for the food to come out, highly average. But that was the last I saw from my server. She just started getting really busy at the bar, dishwashing and doing other work. Eventually I had to get up from my table and pay my bill at the bar. The food tasted okay, but I think I'd rather spend my money for a little bit more authentic and a little less chain, especially for that cost. read more

Grabbed a quick lunch after the beach, and was so pleased. I have dietary restrictions and am vegan and the staff was so helpful. They made me a vegan version of the veggie burrito over salad instead of in a tortilla and steamed my veggies rather then cooking in oil or margarine. I also had it with a side of guacamole. Food tasted just ok. I chewed on something weird on my food, It seemed plastic but the manager swears it's onion peels. I still have my doubts. Didn't offer any discount. My first time at El Chico. We sat at the bar and my husband asked for a beer and there was no eye contact at all. A couple came in sat at the bar waited 5 minutes and they didn't even acknowledge them so they left. My husband was done with his beer and they didnt acknowledge us at all. We waited 15 minutes and still nothing. The bar area was so empty so there should be no excuse. I was so done with this place that I had to say in a firm voice can I have the bill. Driving through town. Stoped to get some basic food. Service was excellent! They have a patio for outside dining , food was good, everything ran like a clock. Dogs are welcome on the patio and owners brought drinks and bowels for the dogs. Server was excellent !! read more

Great place to get margaritas and white cheese dip (just ask, not on menu). Maria was very nice and attentive and Marcia is a very involved manager. Everyone here is great! We brought our pup to hang on the patio and a waitress brought our lil lady some water! She had such a great time, she didn't even make it thru lunch! Highly recommended! read more
