Although I reviewed the Bacco Wine Cafe a few months ago, I want to confirm that my initial dining experience here has not changed. Although it is small in area, it packs a HUGE degree of excellence in not only the food, but the service and the overall ambience, as well. It is an intimate setting but the owners Paul and Dru make it feel personal with their attention to your comfort and your customer satisfaction. Disappointed as we chose this restaurant for a major milestone celebration. It's very expensive and to be honest just wasn't great. We ordered two pasta dishes which were fine but just not worthy of the price tag for pasta that's not homemade. Of the 5 entrees offered none were appealing so we opted to order the pasta. They don't offer any bread with the meal, which would have been nice for dipping in the sauce left on the plates. The bruschetta appetizer was terrible. The two bruschetta pieces had some chopped tomatoes with a pile of salt and no other herbs or flavors. The owner and the waitress we encountered were kind and the atmosphere is cozy and quiet. Nothing mind blowing about this place. We chose it only because it was near another place we needed to go after but will not be back. read more

Really small hidden gem! Last night of visiting woth family, she raved about the food here and it did not disappoint. Felt like we were eating in Italy. Started with the bruschetta which had traditional tomatoes, followed by goat cheese, and finally pesto. Two of each kind were served. The soup of the day was a cream of zucchini with Parmesan and croutons. I was skeptical but since it's been so cold, I figured it would at the very least warm me up. It blew my mind! Soooo good! For the main course, I had the spaghetti pomodoro with marinara and pesto, and the burrata. Homemade pasta, cooked perfect, the flavors were fantastic! Mom ordered the ravioli in a pistachio cream sauce, and my husband had the pappardelle with shrimp and pesto which he loved! So this place had been played up to me for years. I had been told that it was one of the best restaurants in the area. So I got my chance to visit and this is how it went. I had a reservation but when my party of five arrive, nobody greeted us. We sat ourselves down at a table. I find the whole lack of a greeting completely unprofessional. Also it seemed that this place was dreadfully understaffed and it took a ridiculous amount of time to get a few glasses of wine and bread. The olive oil for dipping was so heavily peppered that nobody could eat it. The bread clearly a second thought. Not very good quality at all. I ordered the tricolor appetizer and the arugula salad. To start followed by the bolognese pasta. The starters were good and the pasta was good but nothing experienced was remarkable at all. Even the special carrot cake dessert was just OK. Several people in my party thought the meal was good and two didn't even like their dish. I tasted my wife's risotto and it was terrible, so bland like it was made in the kitchen of a retirement home. The sheepshead was so bland that it was totally inedible, absolutely zero flavor. My advice, get it right or just close the kitchen and go full bar. I can't see how anyone thinks this is a local top restaurant with so much wrong. Never again. We love Bacco!! Flavors are so amazing!! Tonight we started with tomatoes/mozzarella with a delicious pesto. We all ordered different entrees: Shrimp and arugula, (yum), mushroom pasta with truffle oil (excellent), pork scallapini (wonderful, tender, sauce was outstanding), roast beef with cream sauce (absolutely outstanding), fruittes de Mar (seafood pasta) was excellent, and I had the lamb chops coated with pistachios. I made a reservation for 3 a week prior to our visit. The restaurant did not have my table available. When I walk outside, I was approached by a man asking if they were open. I replied yes but fully booked. He said he had a reservation and I replied "so did I but my table is not available" He replied "Oh so you were bumped" like this was a normal practice. I suggested to the owner he should be more mindful and to train the staff more appropriately to take accurate reservations and he responded rudely. Waiter came over right away and said he would be back with water and wine menu. Waited 10 minutes for the wine list. Still no water. Was starting to get nervous because we had to get to the concert and service was abysmal so far-we discussed leaving. Finally ordered wine and dinner at the same time. Waiter said he'd be back with bread. Had to ask for that twice. We ordered the paparadelle with bolognese and the pork scallopini. So disappointing. I can't imagine why this restaurant gets such good reviews. Pork was tough like leather. Needed a steak knife to cut it. But we didn't get one because no one ever came back to the table to see how everything was. The pasta was ok. My bolognese sauce is better. The only food that was worth mentioning was the potatoes with carmelized onions which is hardly Italian food. I think the prices are way too high for the level of service and food quality. You don't even get a salad. If you don't have enough staff to properly serve, don't seat all the tables. Simple. I will certainly not be back. read more

Bacco Wine Cafe- Melbourne- 5 Stars When a restaurant has been in business for 18 years, I know one of two things. It's either the only restaurant in town, or it's the best. I am here to say that Bacco Wine Cafe in Melbourne is the latter of the two. The place is run by a husband and wife team, the husband, Loris, takes care of the front while his wife, Rafaella, runs the kitchen. As the place is reservation only, we were very fortunate and grateful that Loris gave us a table. He said we arrived early enough so it wouldn't be a problem. As my eyes began to devour the choices on the menu handed to us by Loris, I thought this was sure to be an amazing meal. However, our server, Jennifer had me briefly second guessing that assumption as she came across as a zombie. Or your typical 25-year-old. She was adequate enough as she got our order right but, really seemed to just go through the motions. I ordered a three-course meal consisting of Tagliatelle Alla Bolognese, the Veal Chop Alla Marsala and for dessert, I went with the Pere Cotte Al Vino Rosso. Jennifer was soon doing the zombie shuffle towards our table with a tray of culinary science concocted in the laboratory of Chef Rafaella, Ph.D. in foodology. As our gastronomical treasure was set before us, my sense of smell became overwhelmed with scrumptiousness. The odors spirling up from the plated art in wisps of steam would make a dead man salivate (which I found exceedingly ironic given the mortal condition of our server). My comestible journey began with the order of Tagliatelle Alla Bolognese. Sadly, this recipe has been hacked the world over. It has been reduced to "common" food status when in reality it was the dish of nobility as traditionally it consisted of beef and fresh cream, items not easily obtainable by the commoners. Chef Rafaella reminds everybody of the true origins of this dish by elevating it once again to noble standards. She starts by making her own pasta and finishes with the freshest cuts of prime meat around and tops it all off with a homemade Bolognese sauce that recalled to mind one of the nicknames of the city it hails from, "la grassa" or "the fat" in reference to the city's culinary mastery. After literally licking the plate clean (thatsa some sauce!), I directed my appetite towards the Veal Chop Alla Marsala. As my loyal followers know, this is my "barometer" for measuring a good Italian eatery. The Veal was obviously USDA Prime as it was so tender it practically melted on the palate. The mushrooms were fresh cut (YAY!) and Chef Rafaella really took it to the next level by using shaved garlic in her sauce. Served with riced garlic mashed potatoes and bedded atop a bevy of market fresh veggies this was truly a dish from a chef at the top of her game. However, Rafaella's chef-d'oeuvre this evening was her take on the classic Pere Cotte Al Vino Russo. What can I say about this delicious masterpiece of dessert? Was it perfect? Was it divine? Everything falls short. The pear was cooked unerringly to perfection and the red wine reduction sauce was out of this world. A dollop of fresh cream was the exclamation point to a fabulous meal.
