*INITIAL REVIEW* Since I have made many new friends around and about Historic Downtown Melbourne, I've taken notice of any changes happening along Melbourne Main Street. One of them was the opening of this new business, Moon River Cafe & Curiosities. To be fair, I was unsure if any cafe would do well here given the fact we have many (and I mean many) cafes and coffee shops including The Sun Shoppe, Villon Coffee, Jacqueline's Bakery, and 905 Cafe to name just a few. But peering inside, I knew I just had to check it out when they opened. I would have the opportunity to experience a "soft" taste of Moon River Cafe & Curiosities (which I will shorthand simply to Moon River for the rest of the review) during a soft opening. Since then, I came back about two more times, and let me say, this is definitely a cafe you need to check out. Even though an address is provided, Moon River is located on the northside of the Melbourne Main Street stretch of East New Haven Ave., right next to Let's Plant It! On the outside, Moon River looks like any of the other many businesses along Melbourne Main Street as they are one of the lots in a business building and not stand-alone like Main Street Pub or Hell 'n Blazes or other stand-alone businesses. It is inside where you know you stepped into something amazing, definitely designed to spark your curiosity, awe, and wonder. According to amazing mother and daughter duo whom own Moon River, the cafe is a lifelong dream brought to life, Moon River Cafe is a love letter to the Melbourne, Florida community. More than just a café, it's an experience--where artistry, ambiance, and exceptional flavors meet. The main room you enter definitely has the hallmarks of a classic tea house, but one in which the owners who run it are well-traveled. There are a large array of artifacts that seem to be gathered from all walks of life around the world including a Chinese foo dog, old world clocks, porcelain art, and much more all for the patron's viewing pleasure. The Galleria displays numerous art pieces from local artists as well as sporting a beautiful wooden bookshelf featuring local artists. Finally, Palm Court is where you can enjoy a tea party with family and friends. To be honest, it is hard to "simply explain" the ambiance that Moon River brings. You have to be there to fully experience it. As for food, Moon River has a nice selection of drinks (cafe items), sandwiches, and bakery goods. I had two sandwiches and two drinks from them: the peanut butter and jelly club, the Imperial Hen, Parisian Drinking Chocolate, and Thai iced tea (food described in pictures). The drinking chocolate was a fun drink to have and the Thai tea was delicious. As for the sandwiches, very good but I will say the Imperial Hen is pricey for what you get. Finally, rest rooms (the men's at least) was clean and well-stocked. Also, it was decorated to fit with the rest of the cafe's ambiance. For my initial review, I am giving Moon River four out of five stars. Interesting use of the local which includes decor, friendly staff and I did get to meet the owners in which they both work alongside their staff (the mom was actually my server), and the food was delicious albeit the Imperial Hen being a little more expensive in association to what you get. And one day, I might come in with my traveling art easel. Since Moon River is a love letter to the community in which artist can come here to create, it would be an honor and privilege to paint something in their space.

I have not had a thing to eat here yet but I am in love with this place already. You will find a variety of seating choices-tables, couches, and comfy chairs. Ran into a couple of friends snacking and doing water color. The decor is very eclectic and artsy. It's the kind of place you want to hang out in for a while. I looked at the menu and was definitely interested. The artsy girls told me the food is great! I am planning on taking the husband soon.

We had breakfast twice here during our lovely stay in Melbourne, FL. This was just around the corner from the Hotel Melby. The ambience and decor is so inviting and cozy, and that is why we came there 2 days in a row. Service is excellent. The food was amazing. The specialty coffee drinks were great, too. If I lived here, I'd be a regular at this establishment. Definitely recommend this wonderful restaurant and coffee shop.

Amazing cafe that transports like Alice in Wonderland. Ate: Midsummer--sandwich with mascarpone (yum), basil, blueberries, honey and basil. Added veg sausage. Drank: Vanilla oat milk hot latte. Nice cup and saucer. Bonus--Try out a Friday night poetry night, weekend book meet up, or other creative event!

This place is eye candy everyplace you look. One of those cannot miss places if you're in the area. Coffee and food are both fantastic! Absolutely worth the visit.

Visually looks like a nice place. I stopped by to check it out. I don't care for the counter service. There's seems to be no table service.

This is one of the most unique cafes I've ever been to! The artwork is beautiful, my drink was great, and the vibe will keep me coming back.

The problem is the open patio door concept. It lets all the hot air in and the cool air out. The condensation is dripping off the vents and pooling on the floor. We tried outside and unfortunately the only tables they would give us as a couple were four seaters out under tiny umbrellas that do nothing to block the heat. They wouldn't let us sit under the actual patio at a larger table "just in case" a group came in. Well, no groups came but we sure sweated it out under our little umbrella. Fish and rock shrimp roll were great, regular fries great, but the upcharged truffle fries were burnt. They made a second batch to take with us... but didn't poke holes in the container so they were a soggy mess that went in the trash at home. I really did appreciate the effort and the server was so nice. But this is the second attempt to eat here. First inside where we all sweated and couldn't hear each other over broken blaring speakers and overcrowded dining area (not to mention inedible chewy snapper special), and now sweating outside with burnt truffle fries we paid extra for. It's just not fun and really starts being annoying to spend money for "upscale" dining in such poor physical conditions. I'm really hoping they get it together, but doubtful after two bad experiences in a row. Tips to owners: Expanding the patio cover. Get a door that closes. Fix the speakers inside. Wipe up the ac puddle (that won't exist if you close the patio door). And give your diners some elbow room.

The cocktails were exceptional. I asked for classic cocktails that weren't in the menu. They delivered. Love the place. Why Four stars? Service was three bears. The waiter with the blonde mop of hair is very nice but inexperienced. Too on top of customers when they arrive. He needs to give a menu and give a few minutes for guests to peruse it. The head bartender is brilliant. Talent without hospitality, though, is a craft cocktail fail. Kindness counts. The vibe was colder than the cocktails. I hope it improves on future visits. The blonde bartender in the grey dress was just right. Professional, attentive, and kind. This is easily a six star speak. When you are serving? You are "on." The epic failure of what should be a no-brainer of how not to serve food was an unfortunate distraction from the things that were well done.

Instead, one of the main seating areas was partially taken over by strollers, toys, and other kid gear. I understand that restaurants can't control every family that visits, but the overall atmosphere felt more like a playground than a relaxing waterfront dining spot. To the staff's credit, my server was kind enough to move some of the strollers and toys so I could get a seat. Unfortunately, it had just rained and the chairs were still soaked. While I appreciated her making room for me, it would have been nice if someone had also taken a moment to wipe down the seat before it was offered to me. Instead, I had the unpleasant experience of sitting in a sopping wet chair and spent my evening here with a soggy backside, which definitely put a damper on the experience... Pun intended. I ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, which was good, although I was a little surprised to receive it in a plastic cup. Maybe that's standard here, but it wasn't what I expected. For dinner, I tried the mahi tacos after seeing them mentioned in several reviews. The fish itself was good, but the tacos were absolutely covered in sauce, to the point that it drowned out the taste of everything else. Also, thatsynot what they looked like on the reviews I saw. If I knew they would have so much sauce (or any sauce actually) I would ordered it on the side. I ended up removing most of the sauce-drenched toppings just to taste the fish. I also requested a side salad and was told the only option available for a side salad was a Caesar... despite several salads being listed on the menu. I guess it was too hard to toss some salad greens into a bowl with a side if vinaigrette The parking situation is also very confusing. All the spaces indicate that parking is for guests and there is signage along the fence threatening to tow anyone who parks along the fence. I had to call the restaurant to confirm where guests could park (along the fence, as long as it is not overnight or just to go to the beach) and fortunately my car was still there when I returned from dinner. Overall, the food was decent and the waterfront location is nice. If you're looking for a casual, family-friendly beach bar, this may be a fit. However, if you're hoping for a quieter place to unwind after work or enjoy a peaceful dinner by the water, you definitely want to look elsewhere.
