All the tofu! (Cold tofu, ankake tofu, oboro tofu)
    Tina S.

This is a very charming area with very solid food. Its a bit small and all party members will need to be present before they can seat you. We had a small logistic issue with a party of 6(they really dont want more than 4 for a table) but resolved it when splitting the group up. This place is most known for their homemade tofu and strawberry mochi. Of course we tried all of the three they offered. My favorite was the ankake tofu. The eggplant miso was surprising good with some nutty flavor on top. Very unique appetizer. We also order sashimi and miso soup and the quality and food was very good. Would defnitiely recommend this place for their overall quality of food and pretty good for the price too!

While visiting San Francisco, my friends and I had a sushi itch we needed to scratch. A few places we tried didn't pan out, and we almost blinked & missed this place. I'm glad we didn't! This place looks authentically Japanese, almost as if I walked into a place in Tokyo. The approximately 10 four seater tables were successfully served efficiently by one server and a few kitchen staff, in what might be the best sushi experience I've ever had. My friends and I split a cold beer, a couple rolls, and some edamame. Everything was amazing! I recommend the spicy tuna roll the most. I can't wait to visit San Francisco again to return!

Very cozy and homey little restaurant -- very limited seating so we had to wait a long time as a group of 3. Would recommend going as a group of 2 since those parties got seated much faster. They're known for their homemade tofu, which reminded me of steamed egg! Very light and refreshing. We also got the rainbow roll and hamachi maki -- note that all the rolls have wasabi inside them. They also had a winter special, the nabeyaki udon, which was packed full of different types of seafood. The noodles were flat which was a surprise but they were yummy nonetheless. We also got two desserts to try -- the purple yam cake with vanilla ice cream (less of a cake, reminded me of a yam paste) and also their strawberry mochi. Both were very yummy ways to end the meal! The mochi tasted super fresh and was so incredibly soft. Was absolutely stuffed by the end of the meal for around $35 per person. The service was efficient and I appreciated that my water got refilled often!

Came here with a friend after work since we were craving some sushi in the mission. We were able to get seated in about 15 minutes, which was a surprise, considering how small the place is. We ordered quite a bit of food, including the sushi plate, sashimi, Hamachi Kama, Yamato, Amani, and their house tofu. Overall, the meal was pretty good. Sushi quality that night was also pretty good.

Man, what a great place to have in the area. It's a tiny spot with only like 4 or 5 tables, so be prepared to wait for a spot to sit, but it's worth it. YOUR WHOLE PARTY MUST BE THERE TO SIT, SO DONT EXPECT TO GET THERE EARLY AND HOLD A SEAT. Walking into this place really brought me back to being in Kyoto/Osaka. Everything looks, feels, smells like Japan, so I enjoyed that hit of nostalgia. The food here is delicious. They have a very unique homemade "Ankake" (Tofu in sauce) that we devoured immediately. We also decided to get a couple of their rotating specials, which were awesome: the broiled black cod and the Fatty Tuna. After that we had the Chirashi bowl and Spicy Tuna Roll. (I made mine into Chazuke with the green tea I ordered and it slapped... so hot insider tip, do that) We were getting pretty full at this point but decided to also try their daifuku and Sweet Potato Yokan. That was good because they're pretty light desserts, and they were very tasty as well. I dont think you can go wrong here. The only con is there's not enough seating to meet demand!

eggplant with walnut - get this!

We came for their HOMEMADE TOFU and got to try a lot of their homey specials! Came on a saturday for lunch, and got seated right away. Of course, we had the Homemade Ankake Tofu which came hot and was extremely soft, silky, and jiggly. Special Miso Soup - from the photos it looked so milky and good but I could not tell what was special about it. It was a good miso soup, on the saltier side... maybe more miso soup? Idk I would pass. (But looking at the photos... the special miso soup that others had looks milkier and oiler like tonkotsu broth... maybe they gave us the wrong one T T we were definitely charged tho. Double check!) Eggplant with Walnuts - This was delicious!! The walnut topping was so good and honestly when have I ever cooked eggplant? It was great. Tasted nutty and healthy. Miso Black Cod - tender and delicious. Strawberry Mochi Ichigo Daifuku - simple and delicious. Mochi, red bean, strawberry were perfect. Definitely end on this note! My favorite was the mochi and the eggplant surprisingly. Next time I'd want to try their other homemade tofu that's made in front of you. And their sashimi or nabe!

This place gives really cozy vibes; seating is pretty limited, the menu is kind of japanese tapas style, and there are daily specials. The staff seems super small (just 1 server) and she's really sweet! I wasn't super blown away by the food, given the price and quantity. Everything was good, but it came out to about $35pp and I wasn't very full. I think this is a great place if you're down to splurge a bit at a cute family business! I liked the strawberry daifuku and sushi roll the most! They charge a 4% fee for all card transactions, and you need to hit $14pp.

We got the regular assorted sushi, dragon roll, and ankake tofu. The tofu was very soft and delicious, the rice to fish ratio on the sushi was very generous and the portion was bigger than i was expecting! Our service here was great and we were seated right away, the restaurant has limited seating so i would not recommend a group larger than 4 people. The restaurant is decorated with japanese ambiance and was very clean!

3.5/5 Cozy mom-and-pop sushi restaurant! It's a smaller restaurant with little ventilation and the tables are closer together. I've been here twice and have gotten the same thing both times: their Chef's choice assorted sushi Regular which is 7-piece nigiri and a 6-piece tuna maki roll for $26. It's a solid amount of food and fish quality is decent. I've also gotten their recommended cold tofu but thought it was just ok. Parking is easy since it's right next to a school.

Is that place open for lunch on weekdays? The yelp info says yes but some of the reviews say no.

Best to call. Business hours have been changing post Covid. They are open for lunch on weekends.

Is proof of vaccination against COVID-19 required to dine inside the restaurant?

    Not anymore (May 2023)

    Open for lunch?

I called and called and they said no they're not open for lunch sadly. Apparently someone else made this page idk.

Are they on vacation? I've been trying to make reservations for almost a week.

Been trying to call also with no luck.

Do they do orders for just the mochi?

I assume you mean orders for their strawberry mochi to-go. My wife and I recently asked because we wanted to take some to share with friends, and they said you can place an order for a batch of strawberry mochi if you give about 3 days advanced…

All of the fresh sashimi was very thick, salmon was clean tasting and buttery. I have never tried the sweet shrimp but it may be my new favorite thing. All sides also perfectly complemented the main dish. Our server so sweet and thoughtful. She was very attentive and considerate throughout our meal. I would come back here for the other things like the box set (otoro, wagyu, uni, ikura). The agedashi tofu was the best I've ever had. The teacup steamed egg was presented well but for the price nothing really that special. I suspect the price is high because of the caviar & ikura. It's not bad, but it takes a while, it's small and not anything that stood out like the agedashi tofu or the other items. The service was really good. They provided a small dessert for us because we were celebrating an event, that was a nice touch. Overall, id come back but maybe not for an omakase or just nigiri.

They stopped serving lunch, a rotational place for business lunches and when entertaining visiting friends. I noticed a sign a few weeks ago that they started serving lunch again (started in April, as told by our waiter). I was happy that this is now an option for these lunches again. In studying the menu, the selection hasn't changed much though it is pared down a bit with a few of my favorite appetizers gone (shishito peppers). My go-to in the past was the business set lunch, still available and what I ordered on two business lunches on consecutive Fridays. It was hearty and the mushrooms were a good complement along with the bowl of rice. b., 2nd visit Black cod (4 oz) with mixed green salad - Sorry as the conversation was serious so I forgot to take a photo. I passed on this on my 1st meal but knew it would be my 2nd entree here. It was miso marinated with the meat being tender and flavorful. Again, great with rice. The portions are perfect as a pre-meal or accompanying bite for our meals. We had this both lunches. b. Crispy brussel sprouts with mustard and bonito flakes (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=48&select=yUjFMqXOxfF-UyYN6ltybw) - We had this on our 1st lunch and, again, a nice dish to mix with rice. c. Salmon tataki (4 pc) with brown butter ponzu (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=I18uKPl-QG0wVQrUUWAglQ) - A lighter shared dish where the ponzu didn't overpower the salmon. On our first visit, there was one large table near the entrance occupied and scattering of tables with two diners. The following week, the dining room was about 2/3rd full and there were two waiters manning the dining room. Our waiters, two different ones for each lunch, were very professional and cordial. With the neighborhood offices filling up with workers onsite, the return of lunch service makes sense. Looking forward to dining here again.

We ordered a few dishes to share: Mushroom gyoza ($12) - came with 6 potstickers and a dipping sauce. Nothing super special. Hijiki salad ($13) - light and filled with seaweed, as expected. Got a few bites of the tofu puffs, but not much fish cake. Mentaiko spaghetti ($19) - not super creamy and with good flavor. Usually with these types of dishes, I'm concerned that it's too buttery or fishy, but this was spot on! Gyudon ($19) - egg looked like it was cooked beautifully. Katsu curry ($22) - good presentation, seemed to have quite a bit of rice. I didn't try the last two dishes, but I was told they were good. Nothing crazy special though. Personally, I think the noodle dish was the best. We also tried their Hokkaido cheesecake, and that was probably the only disappointing item. It wasn't as light and creamy as the ones I've had in Japan (LeTao will always be the gold standard in my heart). I ate a couple of bites and decided it just wasn't worth the calories. Service was friendly and I appreciate that there's outdoor dining. I saw a few furry friends, but if I didn't have pets, I would likely prefer to sit indoors. Seats seem more comfortable inside.

We walked into a refined but welcoming space where the sushi counter is the main focus, and the meal unfolds course by course in front of us. There is a sense of calm throughout the room, allowing the attention to stay on the chefs, the ingredients, and the details behind each dish without the distraction of a busy dining room. The omakase experience balances traditional sushi with more creative touches. Each course brings something different, from fresh sashimi and nigiri to warmer dishes like chawan mushi that add depth to the progression of the meal. The sushi highlights the quality of the fish while incorporating thoughtful flavor combinations, with dishes like scallop and the dry-aged fish courses standing out for their texture and seasoning. The sake pairing fits naturally into the experience, adding another layer without overpowering the food, and the sommelier's selections complement the progression of flavors across the meal. What makes Kusakabe memorable is the craftsmanship and pacing of the meal. The chefs take time to explain each course, making the experience feel personal rather than rushed. Sitting at the counter adds to the atmosphere because you get to see the precision and care that goes into every piece, from the way the rice is formed to the final brush of sauce on the fish. The pacing of the meal allows you to appreciate each course without feeling rushed, and the team's attention to detail creates a rhythm that keeps the meal engaging from start to finish. Kusakabe feels like a place made for special occasions, celebrations, or anyone looking for a more elevated Japanese dining experience. It combines technique, hospitality, and creativity in a way that makes the entire meal feel like an event rather than just a dinner. The balance of traditional and modern elements, along with the warmth of the service, leaves you with the sense of having experienced something complete and thoughtfully composed.

What an experience! We were celebrating an anniversary and planned a bit last minute, but were able…read moreto snag a reservation here pretty easily. Immediately, the ambiance and service was quite nice. We were seated at the table, but typically I enjoy sitting at the bar to watch the chefs make our food. The service was amazing and they were very attentive. They also offered to take photos and gave us a little gift of hojicha tea since we were celebrating. We got the omakase, which was massive and had 18 courses. They gave us a menu so we knew what to expect for each course, and we ordered some sake. The omakase was delicious and more traditional than other places, each course was so beautiful and delicately made. This is definitely a lot of food, I would recommend the petite omakase in the future as I was stuffed, but it was a great experience if you come hungry! Courses: - Chawan-mushi - super tasty and every bite was delicious and umami forward! - Otsumami - 7 seasonal appetizers presented in a beautiful box, there was a stuffed crab claw in there that was delicious - 4 kinds of sushi - each piece came out one at a time, the first piece was my absolute favorite and blew me away, it was a seared chutoro that immediately melts in your mouth and tastes smokey - Hamachi soup - very tasty and warming soup with hamachi inside, was perfect in between the sushi course - 4 kinds of sushi - A5 Waguyu shabu - this course was extra $10 pp but was so delicious, the wagyu was melt in your mouth and had some grated daikon on top in a ponzu dashi, the toppings help balance the meat so it's overwhelming since it does melt in your mouth, one of my favorite bites! - 4 kind of sushi - they brought out some really great sushis, including more chutoro and an unagi handroll, but I was so stuffed at this point that I felt I couldn't enjoy it as much - miso soup - this soup was so tasty and kind of revived me after all that food, it felt comforting and a great way to end - dessert- I got the hojicha ice cream in a waffle like cookie and it was delicious!
