    Came to Sushi Shio to celebrate boyfriend's birthday with the Shio set menu at $95pp. We also added a sake tasting flight because, why not? Each dish was described impeccably by the staff and each dish was oriented to our dominant hand which was impressive. There were a few items that truly stood out including the chawanmushi with the ikura which was suuuuuuper silky, the edamame tartlette part of the zensai, the toro on the nigiri, and the yuzu panna cotta with roasted banana. Sushi Shio also went the extra mile for a birthday treat. I also appreciated that the birthday treat was served to not just boyfriend but also me (yay!). It was a dessert yuzu sake and it was super tasty! Overall, we had a wonderful time and it was worth the treat. I did get very full at the end and I think it's because of the spacing between dishes. It really caught up to me.

    We came during sf restaurant week and opted for the $60 haku menu. We booked a reservation for 6pm on a Sunday and were seated right away after we checked in at the front. The fish was incredibly fresh. Each nigiri was topped with a large piece of fish. My favorite is the fatty tuna, it just melted in my mouth! I also thought the assorted tobiko was a super fun and interesting dish. We got an assortment of tobiko of different flavors with sashimi underneath and some nori to be able to make our own little hand rolls.

    Came here for a celebratory lunch, and our waitress helped us commemorate it with a Polaroid photo. On top of the food being very reasonably priced for omakase, fresh and well presented, it was really the attentive service of our waitress that made this an extra special, warm and inviting place for me. Aside from the nigiri pieces, my favorite items were the chawanmushi and the miso sea bass.

    I have tried so many omakase places but this is by far one of the most dissatisfied restaurant I have been. While the experience had potential, the quality just didn't meet expectations. The fish didn't feel particularly fresh or flavorful, and the overall execution lacked the precision and care you'd hope for in a curated dining experience like this. Every single dish paired with sauce is imbalanced and some dishes feel a little bit weird compared to all of my previous omakase experiences. For the price point, I was expecting something much more refined--both in terms of ingredients and creativity. Unfortunately, it felt more like a standard sushi set with an upscale label rather than a true omakase journey. Service was decent, and the atmosphere was fine, but those alone aren't enough to justify the cost. At this price, there are better options in the city. I won't be coming back.

    My friends and I came during Restaurant Week since this was a spot we'd been wanting to try, and we opted for the $60 tasting menu. Parking was a bit tough, so I'd recommend giving yourself extra time to find a spot. We had a reservation and were seated right away. We weren't sure whether to go with sake or wine during the meal, and our server was kind enough to offer tastings of two sakes she recommended before we committed to a bottle--which we really appreciated. The fish tasted fresh, but the flavors didn't really wow us. The highlights were the seared yellowtail the yuzu panna cotta, which was a refreshing end to the meal. After a seven-course tasting menu and a bottle of wine, I left feeling hungry and a bit unsatisfied. The food wasn't bad, but considering the price point, I probably wouldn't go back.

    -NOT really an omakase spot. -No personal omakase chef for counter seating -Dry sushi/rice -ran out of items for set "omakase" tasting menu -good service/staff Sure the menu is a tasting menu but the sushi itself is not good quality. Came in on an empty Saturday night and their $95 omakase had ran out of some items so we opted for the $60 one. Usually you sit at the counter for omakase you have a personal chef create the sushi for you, instead we ordered and felt as if we are eating at a regular sushi spot, premade. Also the sushi rice is extremely dry!! They serve you a miso soup which they recommend to sip on during the course, possibly bc their rice is sooo dry. I noticed this in other reviews too, maybe the restaurant should change their rice or watch who is preparing the food? Are they giving us stale rice at this point? Staff was really nice and the ambiance was good as well but overall tasting experience was horrible.

    Came to Sushi Shio on a Thursday night for girls night. We made a reservation but the restaurant had plenty of seating throughout the night. We started off with a bottle of Dassai 45, which is one of our go-to super drinkable sakes. We each opted for the lower tier omakase for $59 vs the higher tier for $90 but ended up having to add the uni hand roll as a supplement. All of the fish was incredibly fresh and tasted great, but I wouldn't say it's significantly better than other Japanese restaurants in the city. The most underwhelming course was unfortunately the scallop, which was in a cold broth/sauce that took away from the scallop flavor. They also had very limited hot appetizer options so we ended up only getting the shishito peppers, which were okay. Overall, we had a nice dinner and a good experience here. The food was good and it's a great option for a more budget-friendly omakase option in San Francisco.

    Service: My husband and I finally visited Sushi Shio earlier this year, after wanting to visit for a while. I made a reservation online for 2 people for the same night. Upon arriving, there was some confusion with the staff and I'm not sure if there were some crossed signals with multiple booking sites or if it was due to the last minute-ness of the rez, but it was unclear if they would accept it (even though it was confirmed online). I'm happy to report that they were able to honour the rez (which was a relief since we were seated near the door and overheard some walk-in customers being turned away). And throughout the meal, the staff continued to be attentive and hospitable and were able to given recs when asked. Food: The tasting menu overall was excellent and it's clear that each dish and item was well-planned and prepared with care. It's hard to choose just one favourite, though the sushi and tartlette would definitely be up there for me. Price: The Restaurant Week deal wasn't too big of a price difference compared to their regular menu, so coming here for dinner on a typical night would be a similar experience I think. Yelp has it listed at $$$$ which I actually think is inaccurate since it seems more affordable than that. Location: Easy to get to by public transit - walking distance from Market St and several MUNI stops.

    We ordered the $95 "shio" tasting and a sake tasting We really enjoyed the experience and food here! We were all surprised the restaurant wasn't more packed - on a Saturday night there were only two other parties dining in. But as we were eating, every minute or two, there would be a receipt printing for takeout orders, so they were still very busy. Busy it's good for sushi restaurants which means the fish is fresh! The waitresses were so nice and the fish was indeed very fresh. My favorite parts of the menu were the Japanese egg custard (chawanmushi) and the chef's selected nigiri, which came out in two separate courses, each with four pieces of fish. The sake tasting was a generous pour, and the four of us shared two tastings. Would definitely come back!

    Visiting friends on Valencia so decided to check this place out since it was in the same building. Cool interior design and busy as expected for a Friday night so reses are recommended but lucky for us we were seated before our scheduled time. Nigiri Sampler- very well presented and the fish to rice ratio was perfect and with 8 types of fish it was a good variety. The waiter identified each piece but would have liked if wasabi (which was not served) and soy was required based on the way each fish was described. Seared Scallop hand roll - Unique presentation of chopped seared pieces of scallop and flavors were ok. Good service and all the dishes were well presented but +$50 for Beef Donburi is a little over the top given the amount of wagyu provided. Overall, if you are in the area you could give it a try but would not make a special trip into SF for this experience.

    We dined at Sushi Shio for SFRW back in November 2024. They offered a $90 tasting menu, which is affordable (relatively speaking) for SF standards. Overall there was a good variety of hot and cold items. My personal favorite was the miso cod with kabocha purée. The cod was buttery and moist, and the purée was sweet and creamy. We added the o-toro, uni, and A5 wagyu supplement for +$35 extra, which were all very tasty as well. I thought the chawanmushi presentation was very disappointing. The egg custard itself was good, but presentation was awful; the bowl was maybe one-third full and it only had egg custard, ikura, and furikake. It could've used other ingredients like shrimp, crab, or even mushrooms to give the dish more volume. I wasn't a fan of the abalone with nigori jelly dish either. I didn't like the nigori jelly flavor, and my dislike of abalone is just a personal preference. Their miso soup was too salty, and the mackerel nigiri wasn't good. It wasn't bad or old, but rather just didn't taste good. Unfortunately, Sushi Shio didn't hit the mark for us for the higher-end Japanese restaurants in SF. Service was very nice, friendly, and accommodating, and ambiance was decent. However, we won't be returning.

    The food and ambiance are great. Honestly, Sushi Shio is one of my top spots for omakase, and it's incredibly underrated. I believe the tasting menu is worth the price, as it rotates and perfectly suits my palate each time. The tasting menu is priced fairly at $95, with additional costs for supplements like uni and truffles. Their portions of truffle and uni are remarkably generous--I'd come here just for those over and over again. I truly love their food. I'm knocking off a star because, while the service is good, communication was an issue. I had difficulty understanding our waitress due to her thick accent. Additionally, she didn't mention that a 20% gratuity was already added to our bill, which resulted in us unintentionally leaving a total gratuity of 40%.

I got the spam masubi, which I thought would be a solid choice. It did arrive warm, but the slice of spam that was in the masubi was so thin! It was the thinnest piece of spam I had ever gotten, and I've gotten spam masubis at a variety of places including ABC stores and other places in Hawaii, and even various stores in the States. The rice was okay, some brown rice thing with seasoning, that was decent but not my preferred white rice. Overall my two times here have been disappointing. I will really never line up for this place in person, nor will I understand why people do.

Yaki onigiri was good as well, the soy sauce flavored rice had good flavor but I personally would've preferred a filling inside. Original mushroom potstickers and katsu curry rice were both skips from me. The potstickers didn't have that much flavor to me, and they were really flimsy and fell apart upon picking up. I had higher expectations for the katsu curry rice as well but maybe it was an off day, as the chicken was dry and stringy and the curry didn't have the classic rich/deep flavor I was expecting. Overall glad I got to try Bon, Nene once! Definitely worth trying the mentaiko spaghetti here.

Immediately, the ambiance and service was quite nice. We were seated at the table, but typically I enjoy sitting at the bar to watch the chefs make our food. The service was amazing and they were very attentive. They also offered to take photos and gave us a little gift of hojicha tea since we were celebrating. We got the omakase, which was massive and had 18 courses. They gave us a menu so we knew what to expect for each course, and we ordered some sake. The omakase was delicious and more traditional than other places, each course was so beautiful and delicately made. This is definitely a lot of food, I would recommend the petite omakase in the future as I was stuffed, but it was a great experience if you come hungry! Courses: - Chawan-mushi - super tasty and every bite was delicious and umami forward! - Otsumami - 7 seasonal appetizers presented in a beautiful box, there was a stuffed crab claw in there that was delicious - 4 kinds of sushi - each piece came out one at a time, the first piece was my absolute favorite and blew me away, it was a seared chutoro that immediately melts in your mouth and tastes smokey - Hamachi soup - very tasty and warming soup with hamachi inside, was perfect in between the sushi course - 4 kinds of sushi - A5 Waguyu shabu - this course was extra $10 pp but was so delicious, the wagyu was melt in your mouth and had some grated daikon on top in a ponzu dashi, the toppings help balance the meat so it's overwhelming since it does melt in your mouth, one of my favorite bites! - 4 kind of sushi - they brought out some really great sushis, including more chutoro and an unagi handroll, but I was so stuffed at this point that I felt I couldn't enjoy it as much - miso soup - this soup was so tasty and kind of revived me after all that food, it felt comforting and a great way to end - dessert- I got the hojicha ice cream in a waffle like cookie and it was delicious!

    WOW!!! That's it,…read morethat's the review. No, but in all seriousness, I visited Kusakabe for the 18 course Omakase (my first) and it was such a fantastic experience. Our server was so attentive and thoughtful and really helped make the entire experience so much fun. This was also some of - if not the best - sushi I have ever had. Everything was extremely fresh and the fish melted like butter in my mouth. Every course was extremely flavorful and just truly deliberate; there was a story behind everything. They also have a really great sake list and our server recommended delicious pairings that went well with each course. I genuinely cannot wait to go back and experience another Omakase here!
