I have been dining at this restaurant for years. It has great food and reasonable prices. They just remodeled it, so it's very modern inside. The service is always great.

This is a long one but well deserved, I think. I have to give this family run restaurant props. We got off to a rocky start but I am a new fan! If you like shrimp, this place should be on your list. The shrimp is fresh, well prepared and plentiful. This round the restaurant kindly wanted to right the wrong of the other night's delivery. I appreciate that they also took up lousy Grub Hub's mistakes also. They didn't have to do this, honestly. But I'm glad they did because they gave me a chance to really try their food. This was delivered by the owner herself, which was flattering. She brought not only a great meal, but a genuine apology for my daughter, which really made me feel good. My daughter was very fussy about the previous experience. I was glad to try a few delicious items and since I didn't order, it was a surprise, which was fun. I feel like they were showcasing their talents and allowing me to appreciate their strengths. Fresh, HOT and quick, yet not fast food. Great fresh vegetables and ingredients. Not greasy or oily, flavorful but still mellow enough since I haven't been feeling 100 percent. I'm thankful that I don't have to make any food today and even have some nice leftovers to enjoy later. All the food reheats well, which is a big plus for me because I tend to eat a lot of small meals instead of big, filling meals. I also prefer healthy food and take out is rarely "healthy" for the most part. It's nice to have options that can please a crowd, fun food mixed with healthy options for me. Something for everyone. Bonus! Ok. Back to the food. That's the real deal. We got shrimp with mixed veggies, shrimp egg rolls, egg flower soup and fried shrimp. All were fresh, piping hot and really good. But the star is the simple shrimp with vegetables. Perfectly cooked again. We will definitely be back. We need a little authentic spot nearby!

We've driven by this restaurant for years and never stopped in until recently, because A) We tend to eat dinner very late at night... they close at 9 PM here and B) We thought this place would be just another Panda Express clone. Boy were we wrong. We are also very glad that Egg Roll Express and the other businesses on this block survived the Eaton Fire, otherwise we wouldn't have a chance to come in and try the food. We were expecting it to be very hole-in-the-wall, but the interior looks very modern and clean. Even the restrooms (when we went) seemed cleaner than Marie Kondo's house. The food overall seemed to be somewhere between American-Chinese style and authentic Chinese, though leaning more towards authentic. We never visited in its previous iterations, so can't make a judgment of how the food used to be. Here's a low-down of what we tried: Vegetable egg rolls: Despite being named "Egg Roll Express", we found it hilarious that there was only one kind of egg roll on the menu. These were pretty nice and crispy and very strong cabbage flavor, but a bit on the small side. Served with a fruity sweet dipping sauce that was mostly sweet and not sour. West lake beef soup: Very pleasant and delicious with the right amount of white pepper and cilantro, though less gluppy in viscosity than what we're used to. Still respectable in our book. Sauteed green beans: Cooked just the right amount, crispy and full of garlic, soy sauce and sesame oil. Excellent, on part with that of Tasty Choice in San Gabriel. Taiwan rice noodles: Ordered this without bell peppers due to my girlfriend's allergy. Very flavorful and nice noodle texture, and the shrimp and char siu pork were tasty. Has a hint of sesame oil flavor. Nice amount of veggies in here too. Pineapple shrimp fried rice: I think they need to improve more on their rice dishes. Given that this is fried rice, the rice needed to be drier; it almost seemed as if they were using fresh rice to make this instead of day-old rice. Rice could definitely use more wok hay too. While the shrimp was great and so were the veggies in the fried rice, the pineapple certainly didn't taste optimal or very perky. Maybe they just got a mediocre batch of fruit, but we were hoping for better. Thai iced tea: Could be better, tasted like it came from an off-the-shelf mix that you could buy in the store. I guess drinks are not their strong point. But their iced water was great. They even have a station near the ordering counter with complimentary iced water, if you are waiting for your order. So far, soup, veggie and rice noodle dishes are excellent, while their fried rice could be better. Total damage came out to $68 before tips, which is pretty good considering that the portions are pretty generous. If you are craving a certain item, I would call beforehand... we wanted to try the steamed fish fillet as well as their sesame pockets, but they were out of them for the day. Oh well, next time then. Staff was very nice and friendly and there was no communication barrier at all when it came to explaining allergies; they seem fluent in both Mandarin and English. We were so glad that they could exclude certain ingredients from dishes to accommodate my girlfriend's allergies. Also really appreciated that they would come around every now and then to check if we needed anything. We did find it hilarious that we were offered a fork and spoon for utensils, and we had to ask for chopsticks. I guess demographically speaking, this area doesn't have a whole lot of Asian folks. Maybe we're just too SGV-spoiled. It seems to be a husband-and-wife operation with one or two chefs in the back, but our food came out within less than 10 minutes of ordering and nice and hot as well. And finally, mad props to the owners for investing in excellent ambiance here. They have Chinese pop music playing in the background, but it is at a reasonable volume, and unlike many modern restaurants, there is not much in the way of echo and you could actually hear yourself think and have a conversation with the people at your table here. We suspect they might have some soundproofing material in the walls. That's a big plus in our book. Will definitely be back to try their other dishes. First impressions are very important, and overall, our first visit here was pretty solid. Only downside is that they're not open super-late. Two lessons here: Don't judge a book by its cover, and certainly don't brush off the mom-and-pop businesses. This part of Pasadena and Altadena could certainly use more love and patronage.

    Garlic chicken lunch special

What can I say! Egg Roll Express and its new owners are creating magic with these incredible dishes. My favorite is the garlic chicken lunch special. The soup, rice, veggies, and chicken are so tasty, I can't believe it's only $10.99 I'm telling you folks, I've been eating Chinese food for decades, and this place ranks way up there. Friendly staff make you feel welcome and at home.

I recently dined at Egg Roll Express and had a wonderful experience. The menu offered a great variety of traditional Chinese dishes, and the food was absolutely delicious. We started with the crispy egg rolls, which were perfectly deep fried and full of flavor. For the main course, I highly recommend the kung pao chicken it was flavorful and perfectly balanced with a kick of spice. The service was excellent, with the staff being attentive and friendly, ensuring we had everything we needed.the restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, that made it a pleasant place to relax and enjoy our meal. Overall, a fantastic dining experience, and I will definitely be back!

This restaurant sounds like a Chinese Takeout but it's not. It's a family ownedl Chinese restaurant. My friends and I decided to have lunch here and all the food was top notch. My favorite dish of all time is the Eggplant and they nailed the Szechuan Eggplant and Tofu dish! Server was patient and friendly and I had a great experience overall.

We didn't question it and started eating. Midway through our meal, the manager came over and said it was actually a mistake - that the cucumbers were a paid item. He gave us two options: keep eating and get charged, or have it taken away and not be charged. At that point, we had already eaten about half. Of course, we declined the extra charge since we genuinely thought it came with our order. What happened next is what lost me as a customer. The manager took the dish and immediately dumped it in the trash right behind me, where I could hear it. It felt unnecessary and honestly a bit disrespectful. A better way to handle it would've been to acknowledge the mistake and just comp the dish this time. Instead, it turned into an awkward moment over what couldn't have been more than a few dollars' worth of cucumbers. Not a great experience, and not a place I'd return to based on how this was handled.

They're so flavorful and crispy at the same time. and it comes with so much seafood and bok choy so you're getting your veggies in. The beef chow fun was addicting I couldn't stop eating the noodles. The flavor was just too good. I also was very surprised at their yang chow fried rice. The pork meat was so good and the rice was perfectly cooked. If you haven't tried the seaweed fish it's a very unique dish I recommend if you like fried fish, this is a very tasty fish. It's green but it tastes so good. I love ha gow, you can never go wrong with a shrimp ball steamed in rice paper. And always gotta get the green beans in for that veggie dish. The green beans are flavorful and crunchy in the right places. I had a really great time. It's honestly really fun to come here with a big group of people to enjoy a really delicious family style Chinese meal. They also give free peanuts for appetizer and serve jasmine hot tea which gave me so much energy for my dinner! I'm on a no sugar diet because I've been having too much sugar lately or else i would have ordered more! ALSO park across the street! On Friday night, after a long work week. We ordered beef udon with xo sauce ($19.75), salt & pepper chicken wings ($18.75), honey garlic pork chop ($19.75) and beef wrap (roll?) $15.50. The beef udon had a bit of spice that was a little too much for me. The noodles itself had a good chew to them. The beef had good flavor but the dish was a little too spicy for me overall. The salt & pepper chicken wings lacked flavor and was heavily battered. Not that much chopped up chilis & green onion with it. The honey garlic pork chop just wasnt for me. You see it and it looks like salt & pepper pork chop but its not. The sweetness threw me off. Just some fried garlic thrown on top... Not a fan of this dish. The beef rolls, as i know them, from the original location looked like a 'lite" version of what I've come to expect and have had from Mama Lu's. There was not as much meat as typical, not as much cilantro which was fine by me but also some of the rolls didnt have the hoisin sauce. That's what gives it the finishing flavor... There was also none given on the side. Bummed cause I was craving it. Just disappointing. Maybe it would be better eaten there but like I said, I've had Mama Lu's before and this was far from the experience I was used to having. Didnt order the XLB cause this was for delivery and we'd rather not sacrifice the quality.

Bowls of steamed rice cost $2.50, and we each got one. Portions are generously large and worth the cost; we took leftovers home. The tea offered to us tasted good. The slippery shrimp had a nice crisp with a pleasant blend of sweet, tangy, and spicy flavors. There's a slight spice from the red chili that felt mild on my tongue. This was our first time trying out the dish, and we liked it the most. The orange chicken tasted solid, and it had a slightly crispy texture. For some reason, the rice had an aftertaste I wasn't familiar with, but it was still fresh. There was a fortune cookie at the end of our meal. I'd come back for the slippery shrimp and order something other than the orange chicken. The restaurant opened at 11:30 am, and we were one of the first customers to dine in. They looked like literal pieces of art being poured at the table. Ordering was super easy with the QR code system, so my husband handled the whole spread: shumai dumplings, chicken feet, sesame balls, and more. Everything came out hot, fresh, and beautifully plated. The ENTIRE table agreed on one thing: the chili oil condiment deserves to be sold in bottles to take home. It was that good. Smoky, just the right amount of spicy, and addictive. Now for the real test: my in-laws. They've been to *many* dim sum places and are not easily impressed. They declared this place to have the best chicken feet that they've ever had: meat easily sucked off the bone, melt-in-your-mouth tender, and perfectly seasoned. If you're a fan of bold, authentic flavors and reliable service, this spot is definitely worth visiting. Tip - If you're new to the cuisine, I strongly recommend getting everything MILD spicy. I've been told by some of my colleagues that MILD spicy is still pretty spicy, so be warned. With that said, strongly recommend the dishes below. Lamb with Cumin 11/10 - My favorite dish here by far. Aromatic, flavorful, and the spices are just on point. Dan Dan Noodles 9/10 - Solid and consistently good. The sauce is properly seasoned and truly compliments the perfectly cooked noodles. Garlic Pork Belly 8/10 - This is a cold dish. The meat was perfectly cooked and properly coated in chili oil. Solid and consistently good. Kung Pao Chicken 8/10 - In my opinion, it's an elevated Kung Pao Chicken. Solid and consistently good.

It can get really busy, though, so expect to wait or just call in your order and take your food to go. I recommend the soy sauce tofu with beef dish. It's fire. Massive W. Gen Z words. Good.

I was surprised to read here on Yelp that the original famed chef left for a few years and recently returned, because I did not notice any major changes in the quality of the dishes I usually order. The current manager was my waiter this time, and he said that staffing has been a challenge; he himself also worked here, left , and returned. Colette offers a somewhat non-traditional, somewhat elevated menu, not as varied as other Chinese places, although they do offer dim sum and lunch specials. Note the menu on the website is old and kind of obsolete; the newer menu, which is laminated and has photos, is more extensive. The dish I always order is their fabulous chayote minced pork. I've also ordered their live lobster when I have a hankering. They have the lobsters and crabs in tanks on view, priced per pound. They can prepare it in several ways; I always choose stir-fried with ginger and scallions and add noodles. They also have some specialty dishes like winter melon soup that you must order in advance. I ordered 3 other dishes, only one for the first time. That was honey-glazed beef cubes. Slices of beef covered in sliced almonds on a bed of asparagus with an orange sauce that was similar to orange marmalade. Tasty and unique. The other 2 dishes that I've had before were the golden yolk luffa and the goo-loo pork (aka sweet and sour pork). Luffa is a gourd (like a cucumber) that is edible when young, but turns into the fibrous sponges we bathe with when mature. It's slighty bitter, here stir-fried with salted egg yolk. The pork was pretty traditional, slightly elevated with the addition of strawberries. For me, a reliable neighbourhood spot for Chinese. I hope they can keep it together.
