This has been my go to spot in SJ for the last 5 years. We mostly order takeout here. If you order through app they don't have all the same options as they do if you call or eat in. I hardly ever see people eating in here which is a shame. The decor is really ornate and it's just a classic chinese american sitdown restaurant of a bygone era lowkey. Our go to is the sesame beef, dry sauteed string beans, and BBQ pork fried rice. These slap every time. The beef is super crispy and light, and well sauced. The green beans are perfectly cooked, bright green and flavorful without being greasy, and the BBQ pork rice is perfect in texture and proportion. We ate in last and ordered a couple of Tsingtao's too which gave the proprietors a good laugh. I feel like the mark of a good mom and pop restaurant like this is the consistent inconsistencies. In town just a few hours on business and was looking for a good Chinese for lunch. It's not in the best neighborhood and doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't let that fool you. For $20 I ordered the sesame chicken that comes with steamed rice. My partner ordered the Kung pow beef with steamed rice for the same price. When it came out, I was blown away by the flavor. It's been a long time since I tried to order from Edna Ray and it never showed up, so I thought I'd try again. Mistake. The order was for the 3 Delicacies Kung Pao, Beef Chow Fun, Dumplings with hot sauce, and steamed rice. It showed up on time through Grubhub, which was much better than the first try, but things got worse from there. The dumplings were so overcooked they were disintegrating in the liquid. It's not sauce, it's soup. The texture wasn't good and the taste was meh. The chow fun was fine, as was the rice. Both basics that I would really hope any restaurant could get right. The Kung Pao was a big problem. The description on the Grubhub site is : "Hot. Shrimp, beef and chicken sautéed with peanuts and Szechuan Kung Pao sauce." There is no picture. What showed up is all of that with a bunch of green bell pepper and zucchini. One of the people having this meal is very allergic to bell pepper and could have ended up in the hospital if we were less vigilant. The description isn't just misleading, but dangerous. Edna Ray's food is very good for the moderate pricing they charge. The parking situation is not so great, you kind of have to park on the street. There's always plenty of room for dine in, though it seems most of there buisiness it pick up, not sure why. If you are picking up they do prepare your food pretty fast, and if they give you a time its usually in that time frame pretty close. read more

Not the best Chinese spot I've been to, but it's still pretty good overall. I really enjoyed the salt and pepper fish, super flavorful and crispy, and the chow mein was solid too. Terrible experience. Very rude manager was yelling at me on the phone for asking about portions. I waited for 40 minutes to go pick up my food and when I get there they told me that their water wasn't working so they didn't have food for me and they did not call me back to let me know so I just wasted my time waiting for food that was never being prepared in the first place. Ordered some food to go and while the food was good, delivery and presentation was terrible. I just say I usually love this place and it never missed, but today must have been an off day. Ordered pot stickers, pork fried rice, mushu pork, honey walnut shrimp, and beef chow fun. Everything was really tasty but when it was delivered by Uber eats some had spilt into the bag and mixed with the other food. I will say we did order Peking Chicken and what we got instead was sweet and sour chicken :( Maybe this is an Uber eats issue so I won't fault Edna ray too much but maybe package it a little more careful and for all this food maybe use 2 bags. read more

Let me just say: compliments to the chef here. The food is delicious. Now the reason for my rating: Came here to eat with my family. Was not greeted at all, instead; a younger looking lady, with her hair curler in her hair still, dared only point to a table to us, signaling for us to sit down. So strike 1 for not even being properly dressed to serve food & strike 2 for not greeting guests. The service was bare minimum. Strike 3 for not one asking us if everything was ok and had me having to go ask. I'd rather order their takeout. My husband and I went here last month for take-out. I asked for extra lemon sauce for our lemon chicken. They said it was in our bag but it wasn't. The chicken chow mein had hardly had any chicken in it at all, I was so surprised that it was mainly noodles. When the original Edna Ray's was located in Los Gatos years ago and even when they sold it over to new people in Willow Glen, it was sooooo much better!! The food is pretty good for the area. One of the few places with seafood not a sour soup. The prices vary depending who you get. They typically make up the prices. I would calculate your total before you add a tip. More times than not, whether you order to go or dine in, the tip is added into the total. E.g my total was suppose to be $29, they charged me $35. read more

I'll start with the good... The Honey Walnut Prawns are divine! Just ordered take-out from Edna Ray's. They could have included chopsticks, soy sauce and fortune cookies. None of which came in the bag. Only 2 forks and a mere 2 napkins. Fried rice was pretty bland as well. Unfortunately had to douse this in soy sauce to add flavor. Chow mein was also just alright. I have been a long time customer for over 15 years. Being a vegetarian is tricky as several dishes I have ordered at other establishments claim to be vegetarian but end up containing chicken stock, shrimp paste or fish sauce. Edna Ray was always accommodating with my requests of "no chicken stock, oyster or fish sauce" and the food was delicious. Well today when I called to order my usual dish, I was told by a female employee that they couldn't do that. When I mentioned that that's been my order for several years, she said the cook said it's too complicated & that last time was the very last time. When I asked why this was so suddenly decided, she told me she didn't have time to discuss it & hung up on me. I was mortified by her rudeness! I cannot believe the utter disregard of customer service & incredible rudeness of this employee. I will happily give my business elsewhere. read more

I will also praise them for having a very good variety of veggie dishes and also tofu dishes, something I struggle with at other Chinese restaurants. Their Take-Out business is solid. If you are ordering on a holiday, call in your order early if you want the food at a specific time. Otherwise, it's just hard Not to Over order!! I had a desire for Chinese food. I used to work down the street from this establishment my favorite. I ordered honey walnut prawns and broccoli beef. It took a while to get them for what we received was warm after 40 minutes. The honey walnut prawns had few walnuts which made them less enjoyable. One of our all-time favorite Chinese restaurants in the Bay. We have been coming to Edna Ray's since I was a child, and now that I have my own family, we have a whole new generation of loyal customers in attendance! We typically order their Chinese chicken salad and soup to start and then order a combo of veggie and beef dishes. The service is always excellent, and the people are kind and hardworking. They've had a dash of bad luck recently with break-ins and vandalism, which makes me incredibly sad. It was one of those UberEats kind of nights... I was on the look out for a new Chinese takeout spot and this one piqued my interest. The delivery was fast and the prices were not too bad. + Chicken Chow Fun: Pretty good! Tender chicken and the dish is PACKED with onion/bean sprouts. A bit on the salty side, but it was perfect for my flavor palete. The noodles were cooked just right. Good portion too! + Honey Walnut Prawns: Disappointed by this one. WAY TOO MUCH breading... There was more batter than shrimp! Very thick and greasy. The glaze was tangy and the prawns were cooked perfectly... If it only had a lighter batter. How have I not reviewed this place before? Terrifically hearty dishes; I especially like the Mongolian beef and the dry braised prawns, which are up to anything other local places offer. It used to be located on Lincoln Ave. in Willow Glen, and I'd go there for lunch in preference to Taiwan across the street, even though Taiwan is technically a better restaurant. Edna Ray was still more satisfactory for a hearty lunch plate. And the new location on San Carlos is easier to get to, and parking is a little less iffy, and the food is exactly the same. read more

We used to go to Jade China, but since it's further from us now, we have tried Edna Ray. Food is pretty good and we recently took it to a family party where even though it was the same food, just from a different place, they could tell and said they all really liked it! I will say there was only one time where it seemed to be an "off day" as the salt pepper fish wasn't really up to par, but since then, we don't really have any complaints. read more

One of the best and tastiest authentic Chinese restaurants that I have ever tried, I placed order by phone and picked it up in 20 minutes. My order was chicken mushroom, chow main beef and shrimp veggies, so yummy , so fresh . Loved the whole combination , especially prawn. Honestly every ingredient that has been chosen was absolutely fresh. After a very small tip the total came out to be $51 for these 3 items (Combination Chow Fun Noodles, Eggplant in Hot Garlic Sauce, Honey Walnut Prawns). The Combination Chow Fun Noodles were the best out of the 3, the noodles were soft, the flavors were balanced, everything was great for this dish. The other two, not so much. The Eggplant in Hot Garlic Sauce was actually really sour like the taste of Hot and Sour Soup. It was not really garlicky, the sourness just overpowered the dish which I don't mind since I like sour tastes, but it wasn't what I was expecting. The Honey Walnut Prawns were literally like donut holes, the breading to shrimp ratio was 5:1. The batter was so much the consistency was like a donut. I guess you get what you pay for. If I was looking for authentic Chinese food I wouldn't come back, but if you're trying to save money but still wanted somewhat americanized Chinese takeout this would be the place. read more
