The food was delicious, the restaurant was clean and welcoming, and the staff were very friendly. We ordered the Salt Water Duck, Ginger and Scallion Cod, and Stir-Fried Luffa. Everything was flavorful and tasted very authentic--just the kind of Taiwanese food we were hoping for. The portions were generous, with plenty to enjoy and even some leftovers to take home. We also appreciated how clean and well-maintained the restaurant was, including the restroom, which added to the overall pleasant dining experience. IMHO Once again, I chose to dine at Taiwan Restaurant for a treated birthday lunch. Not only is the food yummy, but the peaceful ambiance of this restaurant allows for quiet conversation! My friend and I chose the seafood lunch specials of Fresh Cod w/Garlic Sauce, and Mixed Vegetable Pawns, both $17.50. Each entree came with a small side of Chinese Chicken salad, a bowl of your choice of Won Ton soup or Hot & Sour Soup, plus rice. After many years of not going to Taiwan due to a drop in food quality, we decided to give it a shot last night. Food looked great when I opened the containers. Unfortunately we had such a bad experience that we won't ever return. I only ordered two items, just in case we didn't like the food. 1st item, Pork fried rice...the rice was tough & chewy, and the texture of the pork was off. 2nd item Kung Pao Chicken, (no veggies other than green onions) again the meat texture was off, and there was an odd taste to it as well. My family and I have enjoyed coming to Taiwan Restaurant for over ten years. We made a reservation for Saturday night and when we arrived, we were greeted and promptly seated. Our server was very friendly and helpful with assisting with allergies. We ordered the honey walnut chicken and needed it made without cornstarch. She suggested to have the chicken sautéed. This ended up being super yummy and fresh! We also got Mongolian prawns, pineapple fried rice, wor wonton soup, and Mushu pork. The Mushu Pork is so fresh and the vegetables are delicious- they don't get lost in the sauce. Love that they have family dinner options available. Lots of choices! Food is horrible. Ive tried it three times. Chef needs to be re-trained. Color of the food is reddish (tomato ?). The meat is tasteless like it was boiled and then thrown into a sauce. Reserved a table in advance for a birthday dinner. Staff were welcoming and accommodated us at the large round table with a large Lazy Susan. The ambience in the restaurant is very authentic, I would say the best in San Jose. The food is always on point. Everyone was a first timer but me. They loved the food. Absolutely love their food. Everything on the menu is sure to please. Decor is also excellent. No troubles being seated and service is always efficient, warm, and friendly. Only one criticism and that is the music. The last two times my family has eaten there, they have had the same 7 or 8 songs on a constant loop, so in less than an hour we heard those songs at least 4 times each, which was a bit much. The music itself was inoffensive (Paul Anka, Tom Jones, Carpenters), but the playlist needs more length and variety. I'm writing this review after my food deliver from Taiwan last night! I've been a fan of Taiwan's for decades. After the original owner sold the restaurant. I've noticed inconsistency in the food produced! Recently it's become inedible! My door dash delivery will be the needle that broke the camels back! Two dishes were plainly put, complete garbage! I ordered lemon chicken it was so over cooked it was like jerky, dried out and stringy. The second failure was sweet and sour pork. The pork was of such poor quality I wouldn't feed it to my dog! It was fatty and full of gristle! Each dish was $20+ a piece, and both were total garbage! I'm moving away from being a supporter of Taiwan!!! Don't order the Mongolian beef. It's beef w zucchini. Tastes nothing like any other restaurants Mongolian beef. Wish I looked up pictures before I ordered, so I'd have known to order something else. Too much tenderizer used on the beef. It had a soft chicken feel rather than a more firm beef texture. And you can see it's way too wet / saucy. The kung pao chicken was ok. We are local and have been to Taiwan many times over the years. Favorite dishes are the gourmet veggie delight, wonton wrapped shrimp and Chinese chicken salad. The three stars is because the veggie delight wasn't cooked enough this time (zucchini n carrots were nearly raw). Also someone decided we would try something new and the garlic eggplant noodles seemed highly recommended on Yelp; nearly the worst thing ever: too salty and oily and bad, odd sweet flavored sauce. Finally the generals chicken was not good quality. For the price I expect better. We were there a month ago and the veggie delight was better cooked and the mushu tofu was good. Perhaps we were unlucky this time....but honestly my opinion is the quality has been suffering since Covid while the price has gone UP(truth of many places). Taiwan Restaurant is a great local staple in the Willow Glen community, my family have been coming here for years. We had a small gathering in July and I was not in the mood to cook anything major. I had great customer service when ordering the small party platters and appreciated the suggestions for how much to order. The egg rolls were a big hit with both adults and children. The food is terrific, my mom and I come here often for lunch. The restaurant has a very large, leather-bound binder that has hundreds of dishes on its many pages. The food was incredible would definitely come again for that. But the service was extremely lacking and I'm very disappointed in the waitress and owner here. She didn't check on us at all besides bringing the food. We even flagged her down and asked for utensils and she never returned. On top of that the owner was behind us buttering up the customers behind us and even pulled the lady away from clearing our table to introduce herself to the table beside us. How disappointing and rude, what kind of service is that? Being kind and attentive to other customers and intentionally leaving your table unhelped. She even forgot to bring us our last dish! We had to ask somebody else to go check!! The only redeeming factor of the service was the help we received by the bussing staff. Unfortunately the order today went in reverse as the great Won Ton Soup with broth Shrimp and vegetables was replaced by a salty chicken based broth with spinach in a dark broth. This past Sunday was no meat consumption day. I follow the lunar calendar, religious driven. That basically means Gavin and I will omit meat from our intake that day. We both love tofu. The challenge was.. it was raining and we had a dog from the Humane Society of Silicon Valley so following it was a challenge. I first called Straw Hat in Milpitas. I called Red Robin. I called Eureka. I even drove by a food truck (we can do cheese quesadilla) but due to the weather, outdoor patio wasn't open so we agreed to eat normal and eat no meat the next day (Monday 2/6). I pick Gavin up from school. I have walked by and driven by this restaurant countless times. I have also heard great things about it but never went. I was in a bind so decided to try it out. My original plan was to go to Dong Phuong to buy tofu. Walked in and see scattered groups. People eat lunch around 2PM?! I was tended to right away. The gentleman that took my order was friendly and made me feel very welcome. The tofu chow fun isn't on the menu so I was very happy when he said they can accommodate my request. He asked if I wanted soft tofu or fried. I waited barely 7 minutes. Ordered 2 tofu chow fun. Comes in meal prep containers. The chow fun was delicious. The rice wide noodles are delicate however, none were broken. The fried tofu was tender w/ a super light rubbery texture. It kept in the dark and light soy sauce used to make this dish. If i was able to give 0 stars I would 100% From the moment we walked in, we were given menus that were sticky and dirty. The plate and fork that is sitting on the tables was dusty. My partner and I ordered the calamari but it was extremely chewy ( felt like i was chewing bubble gum ). The severs did not check up on us until it was time to give us the bill. Food was just drowned in sauce and tasted like if it was made days ago and reheated in the microwave. The broccoli beef was very chewy too and broccoli tasted old. We ordered fried rice as well and it took 20 minutes for us to receive it and it was cold. It was not a lot of people at the restaurant but our food took forever to arrive. At the end when we got our bill, I decided not to tip because food and service was really bad. When the host saw we didn't tip she said " you not going to tip?" and then said "no because service was bad" and i said "thank you" and walked away and she said "thank you for what ". Is Taiwan authentic Taiwanese food or Chinese food? Arguably not. But is it good food? Absolutely. We've been coming to Taiwan for over 20 years. Different owners, certainly; but there's something extremely comforting about its continuity in offering up excellent food quality and service over that time. Hopefully it will continue for the foreseeable future. Don't miss the simple but delish mushu, Wok seared scallion beef, and tofu with leeks in a black bean sauce.
