March 19, 2025 hot sour soup, and eggrolls
    JoeandKari C.

March 19, 2025 and our dinner group of 7 came in for dinner. Service was as prompt as ever as was the food. We were so glad that our friends enjoyed their selections as we were the only two that had ever eaten there. A couple in the group had never heard of the place even though they live within 2 miles. Everybody said they would eat there again, even if it was not on our group dinner night. See posted pictures for dinner selections.

Don't let the dated building scare you, this place is definitely worth it! I typically work a job that prevents me from leaving for lunch, and I was excited to come here on my day off. We ordered the Kung Pao Prawns and Assorted Seafood with vegetables lunch specials. Service was great! The staff was very friendly and attentive. Our lunch came with soup that was delicious. What surprised me in a good way was that our lunch specials came out like any regular entree would. Every other Chinese restaurant I've been to does a single plate, but I loved that they encouraged sharing even among lunch specials! The entrees were cooked well, and had great flavor. The only change I would make is I wish it had more variety in vegetables, but that is is really something I'm not too worried about. The eggrolls that came with it were very fresh and appealing. I definitely suggest this place, especially if you're looking for some place to unwind. With lights off and calming instrumental music, to the running water of the fish tank filters, it was the calmest environment I've ever eaten in (though that probably depends on who else is dining in at the same time). We'll be back

Very very friendly service over the phone and in person for a pick up order. We enjoyed all the food we ordered and would easily come again. Their website has outdated prices. See photos attached to this review for updated menu and prices.

Was craving Chinese food but since the usual spots have been respecting federal holidays lately, i decided to try a local restaurant! Oriental Garden is right on Bascom. Parking isn't super roomy but it wasn't bad! Food was noiceeee a solid 8.5/10 overall Kung Pao Chicken 9/10: Really flavorful, just a bit of kick to it. Everything has been coated in sauce evenly and sautéed well together, but without excessive oil. Small crunchy bits that I think were apples were a tad off-putting for me, but the girlfriend really liked it! Walnut Prawns (Honey Walnut Shrimp) 8/10: Pretty dang good as far as this dish goes. You might notice I went for super basic dishes as one does when testing a new restaurant hehe. Crab Puff (Crab Rangoon) 8/10: Okay it took me a second to realize their "Crab Puff" on the menu is what folks usually call a Rangoon elsewhere- but regardless it was good and the crab filling appeared to be real crab, not imitation. Filling appeared to be small in volume though and it was fried to the point where the shell was kind of overly hard, not a crisp, edible texture that I'd hoped for. Still, great service from the lady working the counter and you can tell this place has been around forever from the interior's aging. (I mean this in a good way, they're doing things right!) Definitely a homey, solid spot if you're in South SJ

Kung Pao prawn lunch. Egg roll comes out later. Great soup, egg roll and prawn!

This rating is for the kung pao shrimp lunches I've had. The lunch comes with hot-and-sour soup, rice (steamed or fried) and salad or egg roll. Too many restaurants make this soup too sour, but here it's just right. I don't see meat in it, so it's vegetarian. The kung pao shrimp is superb, and the vegetarian egg roll is very good. An extremely satisfying lunch. The restaurant decor is homey, but the chef in the kitchen is a master. It's near my dentist, so I'd stop by for lunch whenever I'm in the area. I'd imagine other dishes are great as well. If I live close to here, I'd order its food at least once a week.

"Egg" foo yung made of flour

Tried this place for the first time and got scammed by the owner. Ordered egg foo yung which supposed to be egg omelette but got a pancake instead, and it is even not a good pancake. They tried to mimic the egg texture with flour and failed miserably that the whole thing tasted like a squishy salty carrot cake that got crashed by an elephant. Never again!

Hot & Sour Soup - it was very good!

It is not all you can eat unless you keep ordering (and paying for those items per the menu price).

Do u have outside seating available?

We dined there last Saturday evening and there did not appear to be any outdoor seating. However, it was not crowded inside.

The restaurant is located in a strip mall with a variety of restaurants, including Vietnamese, Japanese, Mediterranean, etc., and there is plenty of parking. The mall is located across the street from Lunardi's grocery store. We ordered hot and sour soup, Mongolian beef, a shrimp-squid-scallops stir-fry and a deep fried fish slices dish with pepper and salt. The meal was quite delicious, the chef cooks the dishes in the kitchen from scratch right after you order. There were complimentary dishes of edamame and a cold bean soup dessert that were "help yourself ". I would definitely come here again with my mom for another meal. A couple of families came in for dinner with their kids, a few people came to pick up their takeout, and we noticed that all patrons chowed down the delicious food, even the little kids seemed to enjoy the food as well. Prices were somewhat higher than the menus that you see online, but currently, it's inflationary times right now, so it's to be expected. However, the quality of the dishes was well worth the price. Try out this place, it should be a good pick for a family dinner.

The combination of meat, veggies and the exterior crispy pancake created such an outstanding tasting effect. The lamb dish had one of the most tender meats I've tasted. The brown sugar sticky rice cake was soft inside and hard outside; with just the right amount of sweetness. Service was ok. They should've been kinder and more grateful. I liked how they have a sign posted on window saying that gratuity is at free will and you don't pay for the wrong dish they send to you. It showed accountability. There was no line for us to be seated. I was able to flag down a server to seat us since they seem to be extremely busy cleaning tables and servicing others. The hotpots are full of ingredients and the broth has always been tasty. Unfortunately, the meats seem to be overcooked. Prices have been going up over the years where only the monthly special is enticing for the value. Servers were friendly and checked in on us, but it took 25 minutes for our food to show up at our table after we ordered. The only consistent experience I've had are the oranges at the end of the meal. They are always amazingly sweet, juicy, and comes off the peel easily. I don't usually enjoy oranges, but I love the ones HomeEat offers! Will be back if in the area, but hope kitchen service will be quicker in the future.

I had just been to a new-to-me one that had micro chicken bits coated in mega thick batter, and I was still smarting from that experience. But I overcame my fear of a repeat experience and ordered the Orange Chicken lunch special. What a difference! This place is really really good! You can see the included chicken salad is put together with care and multiple ingredients: shredded chicken, fried won ton skin, almonds, nice dressing. Impressed. My chicken came and big pieces! You bite into one and it's substantial white breast meat - wow, nice! I'm just too used to biting into battered chicken or pork and feeling like other places used junk bits hiding within the batter and sauce. But Taba Taba uses quality meat and a more sophisticated orange peel sauce. You can see/find the dried orange peel within the sauce which gives it a more complex flavor. I really liked it. The chow mein was good too - not oily at all. The service was friendly and great too. The woman who served us was friendly and really really attentive to all tables, looking around to see what was needed, making sure everyone was doing OK, whether water needed to be refilled, picking up the check as soon as the credit card was put down on the check. A real care factor above and beyond what you normally find. She chatted with my wife too for a bit on our way out - friendly and warm. I usually don't make a point of saying, "The food is really good here", but I felt compelled to. I know that Chinese food restaurants, the vast majority, do cater to American tastes, so the food isn't strictly "authentic" - just a reality of who the audience is. But even so, this was done at an elevated level that satisfies the American taste, while adding some richness/subtlety to the flavors that makes it better than your typical Chinese restaurant. I'd be very happy to come here again. I talked a lot about the food and service, but the decor was also nice - pretty typical, nothing outstanding in this regard, but the food and service are so much more important to me anyway, and those were definitely strong points of Taba Taba.

We felt lucky to find an empty spot in their parking lot, which was shared with Willow Street Pizza. The restaurant wasn't too busy. Typical Chinese restaurant ambience but with dimmed lights. It was more catered for non-Chinese customers, with forks on the table. No problem asking for chopsticks, as expected. Service was prompt and friendly. I ordered Lunch Combo A: Honey Walnut Prawns with Chow Mein. The hot & sour soup included with the lunch was delicious and not too spicy. It's perfect after adding some white pepper. The chicken salad was fresh, crunchy, and delightful. It's a much better and healthier alternative to spring rolls usually included in lunch specials at other Chinese restaurants. The chow mein was not oily nor salty at all, and had quite a bit of vegetables. It paired really well with the honey walnut prawns, which was prepared really well. There're 8 large, flavorful and juicy prawns, and a handful of candied walnuts. My husband enjoyed his orange chicken lunch combo as well. I tried a piece of his chicken, and it was scrumptious, with a light batter and yummy sauce. We ended our meal with the classic fortune cookies. I was surprised by how well executed and tasty the food was. Comparing to the lunch specials at Tsing Tao, which we tried recently, we both preferred the ones at Taba Taba. They do charge $1 per person for hot tea at Taba Taba, though.
