***USP: one of the still around, old time American Chinese restaurant. There is this interesting documentary on YouTube which explains how American Chinese cuisine was born and how these restaurants spread throughout the US. All these restaurants have a similar menu as well by design. With the influx of the more authentic Chinese cuisine restaurants, these old time American Chinese restaurants atleast in the bayarea have dwindled significantly so I was excited to find one close by. ***AMBIANCE: place is definitely old but well maintained. They have a large fish tank upfront which has a single large lonely fish. We went on V day and the old lady, who I assume is also one of the owners, was the only one at the restaurant. She had neatly folded napkins in the shape of a heart at all the tables. ****FOOD: prices have increased across most restaurants in the bay and this place seems to be no different. The quantities are definitely on the lower side as well. We got some beans, chicken and fried rice. Every dish hit the spot. The fried rice was especially comforting, it was moist and umami rich. The green beans were pretty delectable as well. They ticked the boxes on everything you would expect from American Chinese food. Some other customers who seemed to be old timers walked in. They mentioned they came in specifically for the lemon chicken. Looks like the place is still running due to some long time loyal customers like them. read more

When there for lunch last week. Found the food dull and uninspiring - even for a white washed Chinese food place. There was nobody in the place during lunch time - which should have been a clue.... Visited when it was really hot outside. When I sat down, they did not have any air conditioning running. Perhaps, with low attendance, they are trying to keep costs low (and I can understand that)... There wasn't enough here to motivate me to come back. Would rather go elsewhere for lunch.... read more

Decent Chinese food! I ordered the Chicken Salad and it came with soup, fried rice and and egg roll. The salad was decent but I wanted a little more chicken in mine. The soup was average and fried rice ok tasting. The egg roll I thought tasted the best with a good crunch! Prices were reasonable and service was very quick. Tons of seating and parking outside. When it's cold out I sometimes crave Wonton Soup and Potstickers. Not a balanced meal, but it's a comfort thing. I called in an order of the two and the lady on the phone was very nice. She said it would be ready in 15 minutes, which it was. The restaurant was empty when I arrived, but it was clean and the lady who had originally taken my order was super sweet. The Potstickers were large and the shell had a good chew to it. The inside was good, but could have been more flavorful. They didn't have a crisp bottom, so it appears that they steam their potstickers, which is fine. The Wonton Soup had a dark brown broth, which I have never seen before. I am thinking it may be due to the fact they had spinach in the broth. I love spinach, so I liked having that in the soup. But the broth wasn't overly flavorful either. However, the wontons were yummy. They were plump, there was a good amount in the soup and they flavor of the inside of the wontons was good. Overall, the pleasant and easy interaction was nice and the food seemed fresh, so I would definitely consider going back to try other items and I would even order the Wontons Soup again. I really dont understand the good reviews. I only ordered 2 things and the total came out to be $40. The worst part is the hot & sour soup, it was terrible, it had no flavor at all, completely bland. The other dish I ordered tasted old and felt like it came straight out the microwave. Now I understand why the restaurant was completely empty. read more

Very cozy lovely place ! Walking in it feels like you waking into your grandmas house that warm loving feeling. The aromatic atmosphere and cozy ambiance make it the best sit down and eat wo won ton soup especially because it's getting cold out side. In the background you hear light music just the perfect volume to enjoy your food with conversation. Ok - this used to be a different spot - I gave 1 star years ago - I went in for lunch special - was greeted quickly - seated - ordered fried rice - egg roll - hot sour soup - broccoli beef plate and hot tea ($1) - great portions - each came out in their respective dish vs all dumped onto a cramped single plate like most others. All the food was freshly cooked and tasty - not sure if it was the same owners from years ago - but kudos on improved food and service - will be back again! read more

March 19, 2025 and our dinner group of 7 came in for dinner. Service was as prompt as ever as was the food. We were so glad that our friends enjoyed their selections as we were the only two that had ever eaten there. A couple in the group had never heard of the place even though they live within 2 miles. Don't let the dated building scare you, this place is definitely worth it! I typically work a job that prevents me from leaving for lunch, and I was excited to come here on my day off. We ordered the Kung Pao Prawns and Assorted Seafood with vegetables lunch specials. Service was great! The staff was very friendly and attentive. Our lunch came with soup that was delicious. What surprised me in a good way was that our lunch specials came out like any regular entree would. Every other Chinese restaurant I've been to does a single plate, but I loved that they encouraged sharing even among lunch specials! The entrees were cooked well, and had great flavor. The only change I would make is I wish it had more variety in vegetables, but that is is really something I'm not too worried about. The eggrolls that came with it were very fresh and appealing. I definitely suggest this place, especially if you're looking for some place to unwind. With lights off and calming instrumental music, to the running water of the fish tank filters, it was the calmest environment I've ever eaten in (though that probably depends on who else is dining in at the same time). Was craving Chinese food but since the usual spots have been respecting federal holidays lately, i decided to try a local restaurant! Oriental Garden is right on Bascom. Parking isn't super roomy but it wasn't bad! Food was noiceeee a solid 8.5/10 overall Kung Pao Chicken 9/10: Really flavorful, just a bit of kick to it. Everything has been coated in sauce evenly and sautéed well together, but without excessive oil. Small crunchy bits that I think were apples were a tad off-putting for me, but the girlfriend really liked it! Walnut Prawns (Honey Walnut Shrimp) 8/10: Pretty dang good as far as this dish goes. You might notice I went for super basic dishes as one does when testing a new restaurant hehe. Crab Puff (Crab Rangoon) 8/10: Okay it took me a second to realize their "Crab Puff" on the menu is what folks usually call a Rangoon elsewhere- but regardless it was good and the crab filling appeared to be real crab, not imitation. Filling appeared to be small in volume though and it was fried to the point where the shell was kind of overly hard, not a crisp, edible texture that I'd hoped for. Still, great service from the lady working the counter and you can tell this place has been around forever from the interior's aging. (I mean this in a good way, they're doing things right!) This restaurant caters to the Caucasian palate and is far from Chinese food, but I already knew this before coming here so I won't hold it against them. This place is extremely pricey for what you get. Dinner for 4 (2 appetizers + 4 dishes)was $150+. My grandma would be rolling in her grave. I came here with my family on a Wednesday evening around 6PM for dinner. The place was empty when we arrived and we were the only dine-in patrons for a while. The hot and sour soup ($...) had potential - it tasted great to start, but had a weird iron-y aftertaste (think blood aka no bueno). I also found a think black hair mid-way through eating my soup. The pork fried rice ($....) was anything, BUT fried. It was literally steam white rice with some slivers of stir-fried pork. The beef chow fun ($....) was good, but a little too sweet and saucy for my liking. It was also missing her wok/charred flavor. The Chinese chicken salad ($....) had The fried prawns ($....) didn't taste fresh and had a strange seafood-y taste to them. The potstickers ($......) I have never been treated so poorly or with such disrespect from a restaurant ever. Sadly, this was also in front of my 7 year old daughter. We came into the restaurant at 7:02pm, they close at 8:00pm. As soon as we walked in, the rude lady tells us "we close at 8:00" (in not a friendly tone) my response was okay, we are here to order a few things, we will be quick. Within 2 minutes of being there, I tried to order pot stickers. She said "that will take too long, it will take at least 20 minutes." I said, it's pretty clear that you do not want us as customers. We were the only customers inside the restaurant on a Monday evening and I see why. It was made abundantly clear that they did not want our business so we left. I will never go back here, I highly recommend avoiding this place when there are so many other options near by. This rating is for the kung pao shrimp lunches I've had. The lunch comes with hot-and-sour soup, rice (steamed or fried) and salad or egg roll. Too many restaurants make this soup too sour, but here it's just right. I don't see meat in it, so it's vegetarian. The kung pao shrimp is superb, and the vegetarian egg roll is very good. An extremely satisfying lunch. The restaurant decor is homey, but the chef in the kitchen is a master. It's near my dentist, so I'd stop by for lunch whenever I'm in the area. I'd imagine other dishes are great as well. If I live close to here, I'd order its food at least once a week. read more

Came here with my family and ordered the Combination A for 4 people which was i think 25.95 per person. It was a good variety of food, everything came out hot, and there was enough for everyone to leave full and satiated. The highlights were the broccoli beef, mu shu chicken, and sweet and sour pork. Since it was cold, it was also nice to get wonton soup. The meal also came with cashew chicken, eggrolls and fried wontons. The woman was very nice and made sure we had hot tea and ice water, and the restaurant itself has a cozy vibe that felt nostalgic. Plus they have an arowana! We'll be back for sure read more

Sorry Oriental garden, but I was pretty disappointed with the meal. The lady working there was super nice, but for $100 for a few dishes and soup that were average sized portions it was a bit expensive for the quality we got. Tried this place for the first time and got scammed by the owner. Ordered egg foo yung which supposed to be egg omelette but got a pancake instead, and it is even not a good pancake. They tried to mimic the egg texture with flour and failed miserably that the whole thing tasted like a squishy salty carrot cake that got crashed by an elephant. Never again! read more

The beef had a slight char from the frying, it brought a succulent taste to the noodles and scallions. The dark soy sauce was used appropriately and w/in reason; not over-seasoned one bit. It was delicious. The orange chicken contained generous pieces of breaded chicken, what seemed like lightly pan-frying to get a crunch in. The orange sauce coated evenly and had a very mild sweetness to it. The sausage fried rice was yummy but was incredibly under-seasoned. We got 2 entrees and one side of rice. We chose the sweet sour chicken with the veggies, orange chicken again and the beef fried rice again. I didn't take any pictures because the ones on here do a great job! We came in on a Saturday afternoon , was attended to, and served within 20 minutes. We got the beef & broccoli, combo sweet and sour plate, bbq pork fried rice, and egg rolls, and pork fried rice. This was for two people and was definitely enough! Ordered the Kung Pao chicken, was given the option, white rice or fried rice. Egg roll and soup come with the meal. The Kung Pao was ok, it had spice for sure, flavor was middle of the road. The fried rice or white rice with peas and some egg was severely disappointing. Nothing "fried" about it. I'd be very upset if I had ordered a full container of "fried" rice and to find out this is what I got. The soup and egg roll were ok, nothing to crave for. We were pointed to a table and handed menus. We ordered two dishes and waited until they were served, sipping ice water as we waited. The Wor Won Ton came first. I saw some American broccoli, slices of zucchini, baby corn, chicken and two prawns. There were eight wonton that were filled with pork. The soup hit the spot. Everything g else was just filler for us. Not bad, not great. Comfort food. The skins and sauce for the Mu Shu was delivered next, followed by the Mu Shu filling. The sauce seemed to have been doctored and was salty compared to my experiences elsewhere. No green onions were served on the side. I made my second 'burrito' with much less sauce and I could now taste the pork, eggs and veg. Please give it a go if you aren't looking for fancy, but good and fresh - even just a takeout. I'd really hate to see them "go," but I know they struggle with business despite the great reviews. My kids love this place, the food and the service. Extremely respectful and informative. The waitress (the owner?) always informs if you are over-ordering for the amount of people in your group (portions are large). It's a small, family owned place that's not fancy or anything ("hole in the wall" category, I guess from decor point of view), but we come back approximately once a week because the food AND the service! A friend recommended this restaurant. We went on a Friday night and were able to eat inside the restaurant. Covid safe and clean. I ordered the Moo-Shu vegetables. Really tasty and veggies still had a nice bit of crunch. So good! Not too many restaurants offer these anymore. We also had cashew chicken which was also very good. Fresh taste, not swimming in oil like other places. Generous portions, lovely soft jazz playing in the background which was so relaxing. Besides the restaurant looks dark and is warm because they don't have the lights or the AC on, because they want to save money. Amazing food! I always order to go but I do notice some people in the restaurant enjoying the delicious food. My go to is the kung pao chicken and bbq pork fried rice. They have an amazing hot mustard that is super good. The restaurant is a bit small but clean and has a huge fish tank which is pretty cool. The customer service is always great too.
