I went to Eats not because its got great reviews on Yelp, but because its near where I live and whenever I walk past it, it always looked so inviting and cute.
I went on Friday morning to have breakfast with my friend. We knew that under the old management their ricotta pancake was quite popular, however, it is no longer on the menu.
The two of us had:
Coffee
One pancake
Ham & Tomato Egg's Benedict
Fried Egg Sandwich
The atmosphere of Eats is very welcoming and inviting. It seemed homey yet at the same time clean and contemporary.
We sat at the counter and could watch the cooks prepare our food.
The waiters were also very attentive, as the minute we sat down the coffee waiter came with the coffee. However, the coffee from Eats were very watery and run down. I am not a big coffee drinker and even I thought it tasted really bland.
Next came our breakfast. The eggs Benedict was okay. Granted, i really liked it when I had it, but the next day we went to Mel's Drive In and I ordered eggs Benedict again, and I'd say the two were comparable. Mel's eggs Benedict was just your normal eggs Benedict, but Eats added the twist of tomato. So the tomato actually made the egg Benedict less heavy and more refreshing. However, the hollandaise sauce that Eats used with it, which is a bit spicy, completely negated the taste/effect of the tomato. So at the end, its just comparable to a normal Mel's eggs Benedict.
The pancake, oh the pancake. Firstly, it was HUGE. Second, it was THICK. Third, it was surprisingly GOOD.
I am always hesitant to order pancakes. I can honestly say I've never had a good tasting pancake my whole life, yet I continue to be tempted in ordering pancakes whenever i see it on the menu. Pancake, the concept to me is so attractive. To me, it should be a cake, that is flat, with the right amount of buttery sweetness, moist, light and fluffy texture as one would want in a cake. Whether it be a gourmet restaurant, popular brunch spot, IHOP or pancake mix, I've never had a pancake where i go "Yes, this is how a pancake should taste" in my head. So "pancake" was always a very vague and elusive food item to me.
Eats' pancake, is now what I would call a pancake. It was served w/ powder sugar and butter. I was really skeptical, after being disappointed many many times. Then I ate it.
The powdered sugar gave the right amount of sweetness, just when you think its an ordinary-sweet-and-too-sweet pancake, the butter kicks in and u get a hint of the salty butter. Then as you are eating the pancake, you wait for that ultimate let down - when the pancake gets soggy and breaks apart in your mouth, and instead of a pancake its now simply batter that is sticking to the roof of your mouth or your teeth. To me its felt like mixing the pancake batter in my mouth... not a texture I enjoyed. (was this too descriptive?) That didn't happen with Eats. You can sorta chew on it, savor the taste and texture before swallowing.
While I was so-so with my eggs Benedict but loving the pancake, my friend would not shut up about how good his fried egg sandwich was (which worked to my advantage cause then I get to eat more of the pancake that we were suppose to share). The fried egg sandwich was a mess to eat alright, since the egg yolk ran all over the place. But boy did that guy LOVED Eats' fried egg sandwich. If guys can 'gush' I'd say he was gushing! He took pictures of the sandwich untouched, then took pictures of the sandwich in his hand, then took pictures of the sandwich with egg yolk running. He just LOVED that sandwich.
All in all, I'd say Eats surpassed my expectation and definitely did a number on my friend. read more
