They are the cake-like variety, although particularly light for that style. They are cooked and topped to order, so always fresh at any time of day (no need to get there at the crack of dawn before all the fresh ones are gone). They have a wide range of toppings, with options for preselected combos or build your own. The service at the two I have used -- in Williamsburg VA and the Outer Banks NC has been fast and friendly and helpful. We went with half "plain" flavors- strawberry frosted, chocolate frosted, and cinnamon sugar, and half more eccentric flavors- blueberry pancake, bacon maple, and s'mores. The s'mores was our least favorite, but all of the other ones were great! The leftovers even tasted good the next morning. We also got coffees, and they make some specialty drinks like lattes and cappuccinos. The people who worked here were very nice but slightly overwhelmed as the crowd grew. These might be not only the best donuts I've ever had, but the best breakfast I've ever had. Ordering was easy even with customization, and the man at the register (wish I had thought to get his name, but--alas) was extremely cheerful and helpful. The last time I reviewed Duck Donuts was in March of 2014, watching them make a donut here is still loads of fun. Donuts are plain, they dip them in your choice of toppings while you watch. The donuts are hot and dense, not the yeasty kind, but they are very good. This Friday we hit Duck to enjoy one of the last lazy summer mornings with a hot donut. We ordered 2 breakfast sandwiches and 3 donuts. When our sandwiches were delivered, there were three sandwiches, I think our cashier was confused since I changed one of the sandwiches from english muffin to bagel. No biggie, a refund happened, and sandwich was given back, and we waited for our donuts, and waited, and waited, and waited. Finally, after 20 minutes we went up to the donut prep area to check on our 3 donuts, we were order #75, they were preparing order 89 and up. I showed them my receipt and the staff member said' "we never got that ticket". Um, OK, so I understand mistakes are made, now is your turn to say you are sorry and quickly make our donuts. Instead what we got were a bunch of glowering eyes and not one person saying they were sorry despite us waiting 20 minutes for 3 donuts since our ticket had been lost. They silently prepared our donuts then called out our number like nothing ever happened. Forgetting a ticket happens, how you handle it as a business won't be forgotten by your patrons; I was disappointed and so were my kids. read more

You pick the glaze, the toppings and a drizzle. The result is a crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside concoction that is just the right amount of sweet and waymore yum than my waistline can deal with. I liked the donuts but my son didn't that much. I could only have 2 flavours due to allergies I'm allergic to peanuts and tree nuts and that means that my full family suffers due to me. We got the powder sugar donuts my son didn't like that the sugar got all over the place a lot fell off in the box. To be fair he had the donuts when they were a few hours old after school. I had fresh glazed and they were good but not the best I had ever had. The staff were very nice and thoughtful to make something I could have decorated off to the side. Yes there are nuts on sight but the risk is slight you have to inform the ahead of time. These are cake donuts not yeast and they only have that kind. Over all still good they also sell drinks bottled and fresh coffee. Due to allergy issues I didn't try the coffee. read more

While I was expecting semi-sweet, fluffy, chunks of dough Duck Donuts offered overly sweet, deeply fried donuts that begin to get soggy from sitting out too long. Also, I was a little confused to ask why the glazed donuts were made from the same dough as the maple bacon donut. Two different donuts, you'd think there would be two different dough. Not only did the donuts fell to meet my expectations they were rather expensive -- $1.00 a donut is just highway robbery to me. In short: If you know what a real donut is (and no Krisy Kreme doesn't serve real donuts) then I would steer clear from this place. I finally made it to Duck Donuts during its very limited open hours. The donut itself was beyond compare (maple glazed deliciousness). The service was deplorable. As yummy as that sweet treat was, I won't go out of my way to go back. My husband, son and I were ignored completely by a teenaged girl when we entered. We stood at the counter for several minutes wondering if anyone was going to take our order. We decided to leave but as we started to walk out a teenaged boy appeared from the back and asked if we'd been helped. FTR, we were the only patrons. We were obviously disrupting the staff's time and we felt like they more or less rushed our donuts out so they could be done with us. No welcomes, no thank you's, not even a smile at all. Delicious product. Crappy staff. Save your calories and dollars and go where you might not irritate the snotty cashiers. Whomever owns Duck Donuts on Monticello, feel free to contact me regarding staff training.
