My girlfriends and I met up on a Friday evening. We were fortunate to dine during their happy hour and got to try a little bit of everything off their HH menu. The cocktails are IG worthy. The food was delicious and we loved everything we ordered. The $5 bites and the appetizers were so good and sharable amongst us 4. The potato croquettes, shrimp sliders, brussel sprouts, and bucati mussels were our top favs. We also ordered the Rockefeller oysters and Grilled Octopus. Highly recommended. Our waiter was so nice and attentive. He was knowledgeable of the menu and provided recommendation to pace our food since we ordered a lot and didn't want to overcrowd the table. The ambience was very chill with very beautiful foral accents that compliments the velvet chairs. The cozy booth makes it intimate with your party. They have an outside patio that's looks like an wonderful place to dine if the weather it right. It was too hot and humid during our visit. Duchess was the perfect spot for a girls dinner or brunch! I came here with a friend and several food items we ordered were exceptional. The chicken skewer was okay but IMO lacking in flavor and just okay. It was my birthday as well and the staff surprised me with a birthday dessert (doughnuts). Have to order: Roasted Beet & Citrus Salad Grilled Octopus Prime Ribeye The cocktails were amazing and the wine list was okay, but would have been nice to see a few more wine by the glass options. Very disappointing. We went in on a Sunday to have a glass of wine, there was one other person at the bar. The bar was not cleaned up from previous customers. The bartender walked by the mess the entire time we were there and didn't clean up the bar. The staff was eating their lunch in the dining room, the bathrooms were dirty. I had to order a glass of wine three times until I found one they had in stock. No inventory means they have $$ issues. Not the level of service I would expect in Uptown park. What a GREAT addition to the booming Uptown Park! FYI: on Google maps currently, it shows it to be in between Ethan Allen and Rejuvenation. It's actually to the left of Ethan Allen, visible from the 610 feeder road. No valet, park where you can! The interior is a perfect size for a chic restaurant--not too big, not too small. Lots of plush velvet and sexy textures for the interior decor. Service is courteous and most importantly, the food is absolutely phenomenal! Came with a friend and shared several appetizers. We enjoyed lamb lollipops, snapper crudo, tiger prawns, fig salad, peach burrata, and the special duchess rose dessert--fabulous in presentation AND taste! Came in on a Monday around noon, there was a couple of tables but by no means was it busy. Greeted right away by the hostess and seated. Ambiance: The restaurant itself is not very big but it's a cute/upscale vibe. Once you look closer though we noticed a couple things. The floors were dirty, it was pretty obvious. Weird for it being early on in the day. You could see some warps in the ceiling pieces. Also the restaurant smelled very smokey, couldn't see it but was noticeable to the nose. Food: -Shrimp Slider: Only thing I would recommend. We weren't sure what to expect but they were delicious. Never had a shrimp slider, a bold choice but worth a try. Comes with 3. -Caesar Salad: Some of our lettuce was slimey and you can tell was old. What looked "fine" I didn't enjoy as it comes with a jam that wasn't hitting the spot for me (my partner enjoyed it though). After noticing the bad pieces of lettuce just not something I would attempt again. -Lamb Chops: More than half of each piece was just pure fat. The bite we could get off of it was very good, but we just had some real bad slices. Comes with two small pieces per order. -Fries: we ordered a side of fries. They were very good but for a restaurant that's trying to be a bit upscale, they just don't fit the vibe. Service: With all the issues we were having we only complained about the Lamb Chops, and we did get those taken off the bill. Didn't bother bringing up the salad. The manager was apologetic and didn't make us feel bad about bringing it up. You can tell the server we had was a bit overwhelmed, we ordered a second glass of wine and we did not get it for a very long time (by this point we didn't want it as we wanted to get the heck out of there). Not a huge deal but after the food we got...just another nail in the coffin. A random thing we noticed, served us Mineral water with ice in a wine glass, condensation was everywhere (should not serve that in a thin wine glass for that specific reason). I just can't recommend this place after the multiple things we weren't happy about. Maybe we just had really bad luck but if it's bad when it's not busy, can't imagine a busy night. We had a good experience here for a girls dinner! We started off with the octopus and the burrata/peach appetizers. Both were very good. The octopus was very tender and the burrata paired so nicely with the cranberry sourdough bread. For my entree, I got the salmon skewers and got a side of rice and a side of brussel sprouts. I would pass on the rice for next time, it was just ok and I didn't think worth the money. The brussel sprouts are really good and I would order it again. This place used to be the old Belvedere in uptown and I live how they designed the place.,I really want to give them a solid 3.8, not quite a 4. The service was impeccable, the atmosphere was chic, but I felt the food could have been a little more seasoned and brought out hotter. There are way too many good Mediterranean and South American inspired restaurants in Houston, they will have to step it up a bit. I live for a heavy pour so the drinks were not that great to me. Not a good place if you have a big party. Service was super slow. We didn't get our food well after an hour of being there. I will say that at least the cocktails are good here. I had the fish dish as my main and it was a disappointment. Fish was really dry and flavor was bland. My friend and I decided to also split the bucatini since we didn't like our fish dish. That dish tasted much better flavor wise but there were a few pieces of mussels that did not taste fresh. I came here since eater claim this is one of the new restaurants that houstonians should try. This was Belvedere but now duchess. I came here Easter weekend to try some of their dishes. Unfortunately when I went inside the restaurant it was not very busy yet. I had the pasta peas and prosciutto it was really pasta carbonara. I still like spaghetti noodles for this dish even though it's all pasta. I had the brioche bread for appetizer it was ok. My husband had the au jus burger and said it was pretty good. The bread in the bottom since he waited a couple minutes before eating was mostly soggy. Overall pretty good but needs a few dishes to set it apart from others. read more

I read a Culturemap article that said Duchess describes itself as "casual," but be warned that it is definitely not casual--the restaurant is beautiful and covered in velvet. It looks like they have a patio area that isn't open yet--I'm interested to see what they do with that space. Service was nice and friendly. I had the peas and prosciutto pasta, and it was delicious. This place gets a 5 star from me! The aesthetic is very cute and picturesque worthy for all of those influencers who love to grab a few pics and videos. The customer service was excellent and mind you I went for lunch when it wasn't busy, but it was great. Drum roll...the food...we did not get a lot but for what we did get it was good. My friend and I both got the lobster "grilled to perfection". The potato croquettes...GET THEM! I tried the donuts for dessert because I'm greedy and it was sizable for entire table, but those were good as well. We came here last night for my girlfriend's 49th birthday celebration. There were seven of us, and none of us have ever been to Dutchess. (But all of us remembered coming here often a dozen or so years ago when it was Belvedere!) Service was on point in the beginning but got a little lengthy after the main course was served. Our water glasses were never empty, nor did anyone ever have to flag down waitstaff for a refill. Our waiter was Dylan, and I cannot give him or the chef enough kudos for going beyond for me. The atmosphere, the food, and the service were great. But the one thing that would definitely bring me back is this: I was diagnosed with diabetes Tuesday, and my blood sugar was so high I ended up in the ER. I have been borderline for 14 years, so avoiding anything with sugar is new and a big deal for me right now. I ordered the Strawberry Balsamic Salad as the first course (Restaurant Weeks Menu) because they were out of my first choice, the Grilled Caesar Salad. I did not know balsamic has sugar, and my good friend who is a nurse pointed out it may spike me. I asked Dylan if it was possible for me to get simple oil and vinegar, and he brought back not one but TWO oil-based, sugar-free dressings the chef CUSTOM-MADE for me. That was so unexpected and just incredibly on point for me. Every single person at our table was impressed by that alone. I don't think I have ever had a chef do something like that for me. I had the Blackened Snapper for my main course and gave my dessert, a bread pudding, to my friend. The snapper was okay (but not amazing). It did not have any bones like I saw mentioned in other reviews. One friend had the lamb chops, which came with mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts. The Brussel sprouts were so good! I wished I had ordered the lamb! The birthday girl had the steak and frites, and she said it was excellent. Everyone drank, but I cannot. The biggest rave at the table came from a Self-Care cucumber drink. All in all, everyone raved about their meals. Ambiance is great with an in-house DJ. The women's restroom has two stalls, and one toilet did not flush early in the night. When we left, neither toilet worked. That wouldn't stop me from returning, just something to note. read more

Ambiance- it is a cute restaurant, I wouldn't call it Mediterranean but say that it's pretty with the blue and green velvet chairs. There was a dj when I went. Service- was good, maybe about average. But not poor. They come back and check on you a few times. Food- so we ordered the chicken and waffles which could have used more seasoning in the chicken batter, mostly tasted of flour. The waffle is a thin waffle. And the "syrup" is more like a caramel. The salad was the star of the day along with the chefs fries. Grilled salad will have you ordering a second one like we did. The food was good but sadly everything else about Duchess left a lot to be desired. I understand that they only recently opened, but many of the issues should have been anticipated by the experienced restaurateurs who opened this place. Parking 0/5 - My reservation was for a Friday evening, and there was no parking to be found in the Uptown Park Shopping Center. Duchess does not offer a valet service, so we had to use Lombardi's valet service to avoid being late for dinner. Host 1/5 - Upon arrival, we (a party of two) waited several minutes at the host stand for someone to seat us. There were servers and other staff circulating nearby; none of them made eye contact or acknowledged that we were there. One employee, a man in a jacket, was standing near the bar looking down at his phone. When the hostess finally emerged from the rear of the restaurant, she asked me for my name and then stared silently at her digital pad for nearly a minute without acknowledging that she heard me or had any plans to seat us. Eventually she showed us to our table. Ambiance 1/5 - There was a DJ table set up on one side of the restaurant with a bored-looking woman (the DJ?) behind it looking at her phone. I thought it was strange to have a DJ during dinner service since people generally like to have conversations over dinner. The music was so loud that my dinner companion and I were hoarse afterwards because we had to yell to hear each other. Toward the end of our meal, the lights dimmed for seemingly no reason. Staff started bringing out small table lamps. Service 2/5 - The most flattering way to describe the service is "inconsistent." It seemed like staff were not communicating with each other and not trained for working in an upscale establishment base on the way they carried themselves. We waited quite a long time for someone to take our drink order, and then a second person tried to take our drink order a moment later. I was never clear who our primary server was -- random people came to drop off food and to clear empty plates. The only saving graces were that our waters stayed filled all night, and there was one server (she may have been a busser) who was really attentive. Food 4/5 - The food ranged from good to great. There wasn't anything I tried that would compel me to come back, but everything was enjoyable. The peach and pistachio burrata, portobello skewer, chicken skewer, and brussels sprouts were good. The grilled octopus and lamb lollipops were great! The potato croquettes are particularly nice. The lamb lollipops were delicious, but pretty overpriced for two very thin lamb chops. The garlic sauce (which I thought may have been toum) was weirdly oily like mayonnaise. We did not order dessert because it was so loud that we were desperate to leave, and no one came to ask if we wanted dessert anyway. Drinks 4/5 - I thought the Kyoto Spring was much too sweet but was otherwise fine. My dining companion had a Scorpion Kiss, which was really spicy but also good. Overall, the vibe was just...confusing. It seemed like Duchess is going for a sophisticated experience, but the quality of service, cheap decor/furnishings/tableware, unpleasant ambiance, and general lack of attention to detail belies that. Walking into The Duchess we were impressed by the welcoming arangement of seating and focus on lighting. It was a pleasant balance of calming beauty complimented with a high-end appearance. The restaurant was fairly busy, but we made reservations and were immediately seated in a quaint 2-top towards the rear of the restaurant. Comfortable seeating arrangements and quiet enough to hold good conversation. Our waitress Tayor was kind and extremely knowledgeable on the drink menu and list of appetizers to choose from. We were told that the mixology was very good so we ordered a couple drinks and an appetizer prior to dinner. The menu has many different options that happily met dietary and vegetarian restrictions. We choose our dinner plates and were happy we made reservations when we did because the restaurant was beginning to fill up. Our main dish arrived shortly into our second drink, but with perfect timing to finish our appetizer. The plating was very well-thought-out and elegantly detailed. Each plate was full of flavor with a quality that gives the impression of a well-travelled palette. We couldn't pass up the signature dessert and neither should you!!
