I have been using Dragonfly Mechanical for probably 15 years now, including a new Trane system several years back. I was sad to learn James Moore was retiring to Florida last year and assumed Dragonfly was shutting the doors for good. I was pleasantly surprised to get a text from Tonya about my Fall HVAC maintenance check. Chase, the new owner, arrived yesterday and performed a system diagnostic check on both the heating and cooling equipment. We had a good long talk about how he came to purchase the business from James and I got a really good feeling my system will be in good hands for a number of years to come. James built the business on referrals and recommendations. I believe Chase will continue this trend. I find it interesting that a few people have left negative reviews for Dragonfly Mechanical simply because the original owner retires or the new owner does not operate the same as the original. Sometimes, you just need to stop and ask questions to see why things are different. You might get an unexpected answer rather than making assumptions and blasting them on a review board that stays with them for the rest of their business life. Haters will be haters... I'm just glad I have a reliable HVAC service technician that truly seems to care about my family's comfort. James - enjoy your well-earned retirement! I called Chase "after hours" I think...I had no idea what time it was. I just know that I came home after work, and there was no cold air! My friend told me to call Dragon Fly Mechanical. I called the number after two others didn't answer. A guy by the name of Chase answered the phone as he was on his way home as well. I let him know what was going on... kids in their way home etc. Chase asked my address and headed over. He got to my house in about 20 minutes, had me up and running about an hour later after replacing my indoor fan motor. I never knew I was actually dealing with the owner of the company. TLDR: In my opinion, based on previous experience and the experience today, this no longer is Dragonfly Mechanical of the past, with their reliable service. Read on for my experience. I have used Dragonfly Mechanical for years; this being the 4th or 5th year, I had service for them to come out, check the heater and put it on, and inspect the furnace. Before today's visit, I've had no issues. They were professional, on time, checked things, put in a brand new filter themselves, and I paid a yearly fee of $135. The old owner has left at some point in the last year, and there is a new owner. Today, the new owner came in. Immediately I knew this wasn't the same service. The previous service people came in with booties on their shoes and were polite and respectful coming into my home. This time, he asked me (Because I was wearing a mask) if he should. I said I was wearing one to protect him, especially since I thought I had a cold, but he didn't do me the same courtesy. So that checkmark about them wearing masks, yeah, that's not the case for the owner. He never put one on. Then there were things he said that were red flags to me that this wasn't the typical experience I had been accustomed to. He proceeded to tell me that because my paper filter had bent in and got sucked in the air duct sometime this summer. We removed it but needed a new one. The moment he saw that words like this "would be expensive" even before he saw my heater. As we got to the heater, he told me his process, and I liked that. But as he spoke, he then said, "Thankfully, we have mild winters," and when I reminded him about last year. I got the impression he isn't from around here, or if he is, he's not self-aware. Then he told me he had to get tools; he forgot his keys to his truck. As he did this, he decided to share with me that he'd had his tools stolen from his vehicle twice recently and no longer had reliable tools for his trade. When he came back from his truck, he had a small cracked mirror on a silver stick and explained he used to have a camera to check this stuff, but now that it had been stolen, he had to try to do his best. To which he then dismantled my heater in front of me, repeatedly commented about how old it was, and then told me after moving the mirror around a few times, "Oh yeah, as I said, the coil is broken." Defending himself further, he explained he could go to jail if he turned my system back on with the crack in it, as it would be against code. Now look, I'm a reasonable human; if my furnace is broken, I understand, and I will find a way to make due. But I do not trust this man at all. Nothing about this experience has done anything for me, giving any credence to his credibility. And he may be correct here, I'm willing to say so, but I will need to get a second opinion from another professional before I decide to get a new furnace. I am old enough and have been around humans enough to judge a person's character based on how they speak to me and their body language. In my opinion, for this interaction, he comes across as an unreliable person at best. How can I trust there is a natural crack from someone looking in a cracked mirror? What reasonable person would trust that? When I asked how much a furnace was, he didn't tell me. He told me that the entire unit, meaning furnace and air, would be expensive, and the air was quoted $7000. I asked again about how much a furnace was. He added he'd never do the work because that was unsafe to just put in one furnace. So I said, "Well, thank you for coming out," and when I got the check because he charged me to come in, dismantle the furnace, tell me it'd be expensive and nothing else. He charged me $85 bucks for that. So again, that check mark about "Free Estimates" that's no longer true. Anyway, as I handed him the check, he'd changed his mind on the safety of doing the work because he said he'd have to check the price for just a furnace. After all, he'd never just put in a furnace on its own. I will not be back, and I will have to find a new service provider for my unit, and I hope that someone finds this helpful. I also hope that this turns around. They used to be a great provider, and I hope someday they go back to their glory. read more

I first used Dragonfly 3 years ago to replace my 20+ year old system with a zoned one. I looked on Yelp and found Dragonfly that was rated at near 5 star then. A guy named James was the original owner but he retired and a guy named Chase purchased the company. I was concerned initially that the company would decline in customer service and/or increase their pricing. Chase came out to work on my system twice in the past two years and I can't say enough about those service calls. The first call was to check my heater in my attic. He took care of that and found out that roofers had knocked my heater exhaust pipe off its connection in the attic. My son was experiencing severe headaches and they stopped when Chase reattached the heater exhaust. I'm not sure I would have even known to look for that after my new roof was put on; or what could have happened if Chase didn't fix this. Then, this past weekend my AC went out. Of course AC's never go out until a weekend when temps are in the 90's. I emailed Chase on Sunday morning and he said he was out of town but would be back around 5:00 p.m. and come by then. He did and fixed the problem in 10 minutes. Just a capacitor that blew. Now this is the next Monday, and I am sitting in my 77 degree home, thankful and wondering how many companies would respond to their customers, and provide stellar customer service on the weekend. lol. read more

We have been using Dragonfly Mechanical for over 12 years. They installed a new a.c. unit then and have performed all maintanance since. Today we had no working a.c. on a very warm day. We called Dragonfly Mechanical and Chase was literally at our home 20 minutes later! He replaced the condenser switch and did a thorough check on everything else. I'm selling my home and literally one day before closing, the buyers brought up an issue that was unresolved in the contract (which we thought was previously resolved). There's a reason you'll likely never see a negative review of Dragonfly Mechanical. James and his crew goes WAY out of their way for you. I first met James when a friend told me about him when I was in a bind. My A/C wasn't working and it was HOT outside. In Central Texas that means a major catastrophe! James said they were super busy, but the dude showed up two hours later on a weekend, his wife in the van while he fixed my unit enough to get it going and then went on out on their date night. Seriously. He came back and did the full repair later that week. We had another repair issue and he replaced a part a few years later. Fast forward to last week and our A/C was acting up, making loud noises. I was sad because I knew that meant we probably needed a new unit. It was old. And... yes. New unit needed. They arrived by 9am and were gone by 1pm, having replaced the A/C unit, the furnace, redid the decking and all kinds of stuff. I also thought we needed our duct work replaced, but he came by the day before and told me it was in good shape, but the seams were all busted. He just needed to get the guys up there and seal it up and we would no longer be doing such a great job of air conditioning our attic. So, it came out cheaper than he originally quoted. Honest. Trustworthy. Just a plan good guy. And he cares about his work. Did I mention the man has amazing customer service skills? Maybe because he cares, not only about his work, but about his customers. It makes this girl's heart sing with joy to have someone that truly cares. Plus it's super cool that his work van says "Mothership" on the side. Heh. Okay, maybe I'm just a dork like that. No one will EVER touch my HVAC unit in my house again. Ever. read more

The rep who came out to assess my AC system was very courteous and seemed knowledgable, but the visit ended up costing more than double what I was quoted on the phone. He performed work (cleaning) without asking me first, leading to an almost $300 bill when my understanding was I was just paying for an estimate and the cost/time it took to add freon to my system. I'm not very happy about this, especially since the prognosis was that I need to replace the entire thing ASAP. Why clean it then? It doesn't make any sense to service a system you recommend replacing - particularly without my agreement - and now I am out several hundred dollars, plus the cost of the new system. Very dissatisfied and wouldn't recommend these guys - I will be using someone else for the replacement work. I called and spoke to the owner about my concerns and he said he'd look into it and get back to me but didn't. read more

I hate to write this review because I initially really felt good about these guys. They came out about a year ago and replaced an evaporator coil on our AC. Tech was great and they were prompt and courteous. They have a one year warranty on their work.... Well about two weeks before the warranty was up we noticed the house wasn't cooling. Called Dragonfly and on a Sunday afternoon they sent someone right over. Great! After maybe fifteen minutes of inspecting the tech informed me that it was not the evaporator coil this time - which is too bad because that would have been under warranty - but actually the a leak at the compressor outside. He recommended I replace the WHOLE AC system ($5k) - including the less than 1 year old evaporator coil they installed so that everything would be new and have a 10 yr warranty. I wasn't about to just drop $5K right there so I asked the tech to email me a full quote and I would get back to him. He charged me $120 for the visit. I have a home warranty that I bought after the first AC issue. I hadn't called them initially because I wanted to see if it would be covered under Dragonfly's warranty but since it wasn't I went ahead and called the home warranty folks - another $100 service charge - but if the whole system is bad then I wanted to put it on my home warranty and a second opinion isn't ever a bad idea. Long story short - it was indeed the evaporator coil - the item Dragonfly should have covered! I told them what Dragonfly had said and they were surprised so they walked me through the whole system, triple checking leaks, etc. Definitely a bad coil and they told me they had been seeing a lot of issues with that model of coil. I could either call Dragonfly back and try to fight them or just let the home warranty cover it. At that point the idea of getting involved again with Dragonfly didn't sit well with me so I let the warranty folks move ahead. Honest mistake from Dragonfly? I don't know but it's curious that so close to the end of the warranty they didn't see it and I never did get that quote to replace the whole unit. My house is cool, the AC is running great and I saved more than $5K by seeking that second opinion. I can't say I would ever call Dragonfly again. UPDATE Several weeks after my post and the owners response below, I received a card in the mail from the owner thanking me for my business and trust. Sadly, this may have been an attempt at humor or he simply writes these notes to clients without actually knowing how his business treated them. If Dragonfly truly wanted to make good on this they would at the very least refund the charge to me for their service call as they were so incorrect in their diagnosis that if I had not done my own due diligence it would have cost me $5000. I had an awesome experience with Dragonfly Mechanical today. Long story short (see my other review posted the same day), we called Dragonfly for a second opinion on a non-working condenser unit. Not only did they fix the problem the other company couldn't, they went above and beyond. They cleaned the coils on the condenser unit, checked the refrigerant levels, checked the other unit's run start capacitor (he showed me it was already leaking, so we replaced it too), and went into the attic and made sure the pan drains were clear. All for a very reasonable price for being called out on a late Saturday afternoon in mid July. I will definitely recommend them to anyone! read more

I had my HVAC shut off last night: thermostat went dark, nothing running. This morning I requested service via their web page (a refreshingly painless process), and within an hour I received a call from Tanya who was able to book an appointment for me just a couple hours later. Chase Gentry arrived on time, and within 10 minutes solved the issue. It turns out that the drain pipe was blocked and that tripped a safety switch. The fact that the drain pipe was clogged was completely my fault, but without prompting, Chase waived an service fees and was on his way to his next call. Dragonfly has always provided me great service before and after replacing my entire HVAC system 3 years ago, and I'm happy to see that under their new ownership that great service is continuing. James is fantastic. In an industry where flakes rule supreme, you can depend on him to be timely, accurate and honest. When another company disappeared after making the initial diagnosis, James brought a team of guys to replace the evaporator coil (in the attic) and completed the job in less than 90 minute. He made a mistake and came back to fix it within an hour of my calling to inform him. He apologized profusely. Then, this week (three weeks later) my a/c started blowing hot air again. I thought it was the same problem but it was the compressor capacitor. He came out 10 minutes before our appointment, fixed it in 15 minutes and since he felt bad about the previous mistake he did not charge me a dime. I cannot say enough good things about this company, I recommend them to everyone! Last summer our downstairs A/C unit went out and the house was heating up quickly. I called Dragonfly Mechanical and they were super responsive. I told them that my elderly mother lived with us and immediately they escalated the ticket. The service man came to the house fully prepared to fix whatever needed fixing. He was in and out in a jiffy and super considerate. The bill was extremely reasonable, as well. I had to call them again this summer as the upstairs A/C was giving us a problem. It was a Saturday and I was directed to fill out an online request. Within 5 minutes I had a call back from Ray and within 2 hours he was at my house (he had to drive up from S. Austin). Once again, he was in and out and the bill was very reasonable. I noticed one evening that the downstairs part of our house was getting warm. I went outside and found the compressor was not running. But then, it kicked on again - without the fan that blows over the condenser coils running. Oops! Since the owner lives in our neighborhood, even though I had not met him, I found their website and requested service. It wasn't completely urgent as our upstairs system was running fine and there is another bedroom there. I received a call back from them the next morning and they said someone could come that day but it would be late. I said no problem as the upstairs unit with the fan running downstairs was keeping the house cool enough. Sure enough, I got a call from the technician (Ray?) about 4:00 PM saying he would be there in about 30 minutes. He arrived and I explained the situation. When he took off the housing, there was a multi-legged bug about four inches long across the starter capacitor terminals. With the bug out of there and the capacitor replaced the fan started without any problems. I hooked up a hose and he cleaned the coils on both units. We put off going to the air handler in the attic above the second floor since I planned for a full maintenance visit in the near future. read more
