The hoagies here are really some of the best hoagies I've had in all of New Hampshire. The star of their food is really the bread they serve. I grew up in Philadelphia where finding fresh Amoroso rolls made everything taste better, and what they offer is as good as the really good stuff I used to have growing up. Good ingredients, good portions, you got it. My main complaint is kind of a common complaint about many businesses in New England. Everything closes so early that your choices are to only order when everyone else is ordering, leaving you with an uncertain window for when your order will actually be ready. Which normally isn't a big problem, except all of the parking spaces around the shop are exclusively paid parking. Yesterday I wanted to run an errand or two after work before ordering, and after a hard Friday at work was really looking forward to a hoagie. I go online to look at their menu... and discover they close at 7pm. It was 7:36pm. I was bummed, but looked at their online closing time for Saturday and looked forward to ordering THEN. It said 7pm online, so I actually set my alarm to remind me to order at 5:50pm. It goes off, I hop online to plan my sandwich... and the web search shows that now they close at 6PM. I try to be a considerate customer, I won't place an order in those last 10 minutes a business is open. And of course, Doug's is closed on Sundays. Meaning I won't be able to have that Doug's hoagie that I've been looking forward to. As most businesses in New Hampshire work you the classic 5 o'clock closing time, it's such a tiny window in which to get the food you want. read more

Doug must be the hardest working man in Dover. He is there for breakfast, for lunch and sometimes for dinner. I have lived in Dover for fifteen years, and started going to Doug's when I was apartment hunting then and have been going back for sandwiches ever since. I recommend the Chicken Salad sub, the steak and cheese sub and the curly fries. His breakfast burritos are amazing, I recommend the popeye- spinach, chicken and feta with eggs. Not a big fan. I ordered a small (10") Steak and Cheese from this establishment several weeks ago. I was on my lunch break and figured it would be a quick stop on my way back from the bank. It was quick, but that's about all I can give the place. You can't expect much out of a sandwich shop, and I don't, in the way of decor. It was small, cold, and not terribly friendly feeling. The two folks working behind the counter didn't help much either. One didn't even look at me, the other, a guy, eventually greeted me when he was done working out his orders for lunch with the young woman that was alongside him. He was neither unpleasant, nor pleasant, merely neutral. My order was about as basic as it gets, Steak and Cheese with mayo and lettuce to go. I ate in the car on the way back to work, and it was so dry and bland that I ended up giving half of it to a guy I work with. He ate it, but I think he enjoyed it about as much as I did, though he was grateful for the free lunch. Really? A bland steak and cheese? I didn't know that was possible. The cheese was pretty much non-existent, and the steak was dry shaved steak that tasted as if it had spent a little too long in the freezer. This operation's motto is "Where the size beats the prices", but in my experience, taste beats size any day of the week (insert inappropriate joke here). I'm won't say that I'll never go to Doug's again, but next time I'm going to order three or four things, and if the next visit is anything like this last one, then this place is getting one star. Had a large All American Club sub and it was pretty decent. Nothing that blew me away, but I would order it again. I think it was $8.50 and came with ham, turkey, and bacon. They were a bit skimpy on the veggies, but a good dose of meat. The other poster was right about the lack of decor, but who goes to a sub shop looking for white linen table cloths and chandeliers??! I thought the tables and interior were fine, and as I would expect from a sandwich shop. UPDATE: Went here for breakfast the other day and ordered the Mad Cow burrito which was beef, eggs, cheese, home fries. It was monstrous and packed with beef to the point where it was like eating a package of ground beef by itself. If they would tone it down a bit on the amount of beef and toss in some peppers/onions or more eggs/cheese this could have been a bit easier to eat. So, so, great. We got breakfast burritos from Doug's today, on this lazy Sunday morning and they were phenomenal. Try the Irish breakfast burrito - real corned beef and melted swiss with eggs - absolutely delicious. The Mad Cow was really good too (shredded steak, cheese, and eggs) but will ask for extra cheese next time. So nice to have a simple breakfast takeout place in Dover - something that the area is really lacking. They also serve other breakfast items - scrambles, breakfast sandwiches, etc. until 11am.
