This more than likely means that the ingredients were fresh, but I would have like more flavor. The customer service was pretty good. I sat at the bar and instead of placing my drink in front of me, I had to get up and go on the other side to retrieve it. Those small moments, could have made the overall experience great. I love this coffee shop! The coffee is delicious, always great pastry items, and the sandwiches from Sonny's are a treat. I used to come here pre-covid all the time and it was a great place to work. Now they have a huge outdoor area, which is also nice for working, although WiFi is sometimes spotty and it gets really hot once the sun is out. Only took a star off because it's a little pricey, at least for the cold brew, which is what I always get. Compared to other places in the city, it's about the same price but you get less coffee. read more

Great spot if you're looking for a cup of coffee, meeting a friend, or just trying to escape the monotony of hanging out at home. The inside has a lovely setup but the back patio is where it's at. Picnic benches, heaters, and it's decorated well. The muted colors match the taste of coffee but the overall feeling between the happy crowd, the great service, and dogs running around playing leaves anyone, especially you with a smile. (I'm not sure I can say the same for the cat people - you might feel uncomfortable with the dogs) I got an Americano that tasted great. My friend got the coffee with oatmeal. The service was quick and the gentleman explained the differences of the drinks, gave their opinion and was spot on regarding the advice. Really mellow ambiance - quality handcrafted espresso drinks - friendly baristas - lots of space!!! I loved this place! I ordered a mocha and my friend enjoyed a latte. We took our drinks upstairs and sat by the windowsill where the natural light was just a treat! The ambiance is truly lovely, I saw many people studying by themselves, as well as couples trickling in. There was even a book club meeting upstairs. The coffee "bar" is also a bar - so there are both baristas and bartenders! There's a lot of room to sit and the interior design is super super #aesthetic. read more

Naming something after a retreat place for wealthy colonizers is so over the top inappropriate for a flagship of gentrification it's laughable. If the owners aren't going to change the name but want the majority of people to view the name differently I'd suggest adding a bee mural or something outside in hopes that some people make a bee colony association. As someone in the demographic which this cafe and bar serves I want to really love this place for all of the great reasons others have listed in regards to the ambiance, seating, and dynamic mix of cafe and bar. read more

Came here for a Feedback comedy session (as an audience member of course). The downstairs is for the food/bar/cafe/chill area and the upstairs is where they host their different events. The comics were hilarious and had a fun time watching them perform and receive their feedback. Had an old fashioned from the bar downstairs which was absolutely delicious. Colony club is such a great local coffee shop to get some work done, relax with a great cub of coffee, or catch up with friends! Situated on georgia ave, the space is not huge and does get quite full on the weekends I've been there, but not too crowded so that I can't find a seat. There's also a second floor and outdoor backyard space for additional seating. The baristas are friendly, and they also have a coffee punch card so ask for that if you plan on frequenting regularly! I've tried the mocha, lattes, and a chai and the coffees have been good, although I don't claim to be a coffee expert so feel free to take other's recs in that department :P. The chai was too sweet to my taste so I wouldn't recommend that. But overall, I love this space and can't recommend it enough (but also not too much, I still want a place to sit :P) read more

This place is lovely. I came in to have a coffee meeting and was pleasantly surprised on my first visit. The color scheme is very warm and calming but also minimalistic as to not overwhelm. The staff is super friendly! I ordered an oat milk (!) cappuccino (I inquired if oat milk froths and the barista discussed it with me for a few minutes). It was a lovely coffee with a nice heart on top. The food looked nice though I did not try any. Sadly - as with many coffee spots - most of the seating is monopolized by multi-hour laptop parkers so I did need to ask a few folks to move around so I could get two spots together. For those looking for a bite to eat they have fresh made sandwiches, I'm a big fan of their egg and herb biscuits myself. They are so light and fluffy that you can eat ten without blinking an eye (although one is totally sufficient). We all know that caffeine is a stimulant and alcohol is a depressant (although a lot of us would beg to differ with this one). So any place that can seamlessly integrate these two elements that are on complete opposites of the spectrum deserves 5 stars in my book. The space is beautiful and open, there is plenty of seating, and there is something to offer for all at this little gem. If you're opting for coffee, colony club has smooth brews and a very welcoming space with plenty of outlets for work to be done. I had a macchiato and it was delightful. If opting for something boozy, I would recommend piggybacks and the grapefruit sculpin IPA all day. There is a relaxed and cozy back patio, as well as seating upstairs to either spectate or partake in a friendly game of table tennis. There is also sparkling and still water on tap and soy milk comes standard at their coffee fixings area. All components of Colony Club are executed beautifully. This place gets nothing but high remarks from me because it is everything you could ever ask for in a neighborhood coffee joint and more! read more

If you're at all a coffee snob or coffee shop snob (there's a difference), this place is for you. It's a small row house in a block of other shops and restaurants, but The Colony Club's sleek architecture makes it jump out at you. You'll be allured in by the smell of artisan coffee and perfectly bright lights. For being a small space, they make the most of it providing dozens of seats from long high tables, to four person tables, to bar seating. If you can't snag a seat, try upstairs. You'll find a ping pong table and a couch and a few chairs for you to use. The free wifi works just as well upstairs. They provide several breakfast foods from granola to breakfast sandwiches. They have a simple coffee menu but it's one of the best lattes I've had in DC. They also have simple syrup (Surprisingly, not always a given at a coffee shop). At night, The Colony Club dims the lights and it turns into a cool bar serving beer and wine. If you pride yourself in knowing and experiencing DC, add The Colony Club to your list. read more

Saw this place on my walk home and stopped in to get a cold drink and get away from the heat. Ended up staying for a few hours. Tried the Red Berry Tea first and it was quite refreshing - tart with an underlying sourness, which I personally enjoyed but know might not be everyone's cup of tea (no pun intended). After 90 minutes I opted to try the Iced Chai Tea as well and was equally satisfied - strong flavor profile at first which as a chai fan I enjoyed, and as the ice melted it diluted to a less powerful but still enjoyable flavor. The place itself was really neat, I'm a sucker for cool branding and was tempted to purchase a shirt and sticker after one visit. Great atmosphere and very lively - I want to visit when the upstairs and ping pong table are opened up again. If I lived closer I would definitely be a regular, still planning on stumbling a few more times this summer. read more

I've only been in here for 10 minutes but I already like this place. Very open layout inside, lots of window s and skylights brighten it up. It's hipster but not overbearingly so. There is bar seating along with tables and some cushioned chairs. In the afternoon/evening they turn into a bar with beer,winen and a limited supply of liquors. Think whiskey. Staff is friendly and eager to please. Cool tunes playing in the background. It looks like they are planning a back patio of sorts but might be waiting until the construction on a neighboring lot is finished before going full on with it. I don't drink coffee but I love tea. I had a chai which was very good, not too sweet and a nice spicy kick to it. I went at breakfast time after I got off of work. They have a variety of yogurts and baked items. I went with a banana chocolate chip cookie since it just sounded good. It was. They are a bit pricey, pushing $3.00 for one, but it was delicious. The beans are from a roaster in Portland and had a lot of floral notes. The barista did a good job on my drink, however the milk was slightly too hot for a latte. I was walking home up Georgia Avenue and happened to come across this. It is a combination coffee shop upfront and in the back in the evening they have a bar with cocktails, craft beers and wine. It has a cool modern look and plenty of seating. For a coffee place, they have really cool unique cocktails. I had one with him, black tea, lemon and absinthe. They also have free wifi so this is a great place to work. Much cooler than Starbucks. Petworth and Park View needs more places like this! read more

I came far from my hotel (I am from Chicago visiting with kids & fam) to here tonight around 8 because it was one of the very few shops in the DC area open late. In fact the Uber I took just to get me here was $12 both ways! Just beware they close their coffee bar at 5pm and keep their liquor open till 11.....which I think is just bizarre. People like me look for late night coffee joints that I can relax and work out of for work and when you come across town expecting coffee till close like every coffee shop out there does and hear they shut it down at 5 that really leaves a pissed feeling inside. Luckily they brew me up some coffee and made good for me on the long trip to get here (or else I would have given them 1 star), but they really need to change how they run this shop, that's a poor decision by the owners. It would have been nice if they ran it like a normal coffee shop so I could have experienced other espresso drinks too. I did order a cheese plate...not bad...good price. So would have been 5 stars but the piss poor way they do the closing of the coffee which should be available till 11pm is why this place gets 4 stars. Never heard of such a thing with a coffee shop, just weird. Updated, moved this to a 1. They advertise that they are open till 11pm but then if nobody is here they kick you out saying "we reserve the right to close it if nobody is at the bar". So I came here stayed about an hour and now I'm having to be booted out because they feel they can just switch up hours and close early on people. Again I came here based on their posted hours on their website, this is horse sh**t. Colony Club has been a welcome addition to the Park View area -- especially this stretch of Georgia Ave. It's a neat little hipster coffee shop with good coffee, tasty small bites, nightly events and entertainment, a cocktail bar (starting at 5pm), free wifi, and friendly staff. You can't get coffee after 5pm, and you can't get booze before 5pm, which works just fine for my habits. If you need coffee later than 5pm, you'll need to find another coffee shop. If you need booze before 5, well umm ... Anyway, here are some of my things about Colony Club: Favorite thing #1: The music. I usually take my headphones so I can listen to my music while I work, but rarely ever use them. The baristas are in charge of the music selection, and man do they nail it every time! From jazz, to funk, to classics, to 90s R&B, and everything in-between, they're always cranking a playlist that keeps me going. Favorite thing #2: The ambiance. The decor is simple and modern, the lighting is just right, and the place is super clean. The smiling faces of the baristas also adds to the ambiance. They're super friendly and seem to have a lot of fun with each other behind the coffee bar. I love giving my money to places where the staff look like they're happy to be there, because it makes me happy to be there. Favorite thing #3: The ping-pong table. I've honestly only played ping-pong on that thing twice, but for some reason I love the fact that there's a ping-pong table upstairs. Maybe it's just knowing that I have the *option* to play ping-pong? Not-so-favorite thing: There aren't enough bike racks, which kind of sucks, but isn't the worst thing in the world. I usually end up having to secure my bike to a parking meter or find a bike rack a couple blocks away. This isn't an issue for me in colder months when my bike is in hibernation (I'm into biking n' all, but not enough to freeze!). read more

If I only need to visit once, it's gotta be awesome. Except... They close the coffee shop half of the Colony Club at 5pm. Ok... So, this review is only for the coffee half of the Club. Upon walking into this welcoming space, I immediately noticed a staircase leading to a ping pong playroom. Cool. The familiar sound of the ping pong ball tapped and bouncing off the paddles and table was cool! Good atmosphere for coffee fun! The inside feels refreshingly invigorating compared to the feeling of slight deterioration in the neighborhood. It is exciting to have this new Club for a neighborhood meeting space. The tables and lighting, fixtures and decor are rather minimalistic, but not so starkly bare as to go unnoticed or to make an ascetic statement. The Club is welcoming for relaxed coffee sipping, quick morning coffee and scone pick-up or a midday work session for laptop users. The narrow hallway feel is not awkward or cramped like some other similarly shaped spaces, but feels as though it provides some intimacy to separate front from back. In the middle is where you can order up your brew of choice, and you can even sit at the coffee bar and watch the baristas work their magic. The attention to you coffee beverage is palpable. The local roast, Ceremony, is ceremoniously brewed for your palate pleasure. Latte art (soy latte or almond latte for those who eschew dairy-based lattes) and all, stay or go, its some good drinking. They have a special style of making your iced coffee beverages that focuses on having your coffee taste its best, rather than just having old brewed coffee - nice touch. One size for your beverages makes it easy. They have 4 different "creamers" - soy, whole milk, skim milk and half and half. They have several sweeteners, honey, simple syrup and turbinado sugar. Add your own lid, grab a napkin and maybe a stirrer - simple service bar. They sell a few odds and ends for coffee brewing at home. However, there is little focus on these items. This space is clearly devoted to the beverages, which is lovely. 1 star docked because... if I wanted to punch my Frequent Club Card here after 5 pm, it wouldn't work... because there's no coffee after 5 pm. All in all, great addition to this part of DC. Hurrah! read more

Great coffee shop in Park View. I admittedly don't come to this neighborhood often but wouldn't mind coming back. There isn't a really big sign so you might walk right past it, even though it's right on Georgia Ave. Coffee, teas, beer, and wine are served here with a pretty good happy hour Monday through Friday. There's plenty of seating filling up the small space and also a nice patio in the back. Iced chai was the best I've had in the city, no sugary "chai" concentrate concoction out of a carton like at Sbux and for an extra 23 cents it was made with almond milk for me. Prices are reasonable, cheaper than Sbux and other chain coffee shops. read more
