This Chinese restaurant clearly started life as some sort of Denny's-type coffee shop. The decor is 80's Corporate. This isn't necessarily bad, but don't expect authentic Chinese atmosphere. There are three Chinese restaurants within a block or so of one another in this area. This one is the largest, and they're usually busy. The menu is more or less standard American-Chinese food, e.g., not authentic Chinese, but rather what Americans think of as Chinese food. That said, it's reasonably good Chinese food. The portions are huge. I have yet to finish a combination dinner there. I think I could probably split one with a friend, and we would both leave sated. Everything I've had has been good, though not exceptional. The servers are pleasant, prompt, and attentive. In the mist of the Covid 19 pandemic, Double Dragon is just not up to it's usual high-quality standards. This was my second time eating here. When they were fully open, it was a lot better. I ordered the number one combo meal today. The fried shrimp was great, but the pork fried rice was not that good and flavorful. The pork chop suey was watery with way to many soy beans. My friends were disappointed in their fried rice too. The take out containers need to be bagged separately, and then put in one paper bag. Sometimes slow, most time very quick. The food has always been delicious, and plentiful, big portions even for the combos. I would like to see a system to try some of the other entrees in a combo, as they have so many selections. And you're not going to find yourself magically whisked away into a fascinating Chinese countryside cafe wherein a frail but wise old lady prepares you some sweet bean bun that makes your toes curl. But as far as that sub-sub-sub genre of grub goes - you may find yourself in love (or in deep like) with a few particular menu items. Why 4 stars, then? Mostly because there's that moment when you can barely make out that the building used to be a Pizza Hut decades ago, that the food is inexpensive and in gut-busting quantities, and the ever-available presence of the mysterious and wonderous "RED SAUCE". Who knows what goes into that large squeezable bottle of tantilizying mana from God, but the Red Sauce is the sweet addition that finds its way on most of my food from there. Two people happily split an order of vegetable fried rice and a half-order of crab ragoons (wontons) and will find some to take home if they play their cards right. We generally get sweet and sour chicken, too, but I'd be lying if I said that any of this would change your life in a significant way. Moreso, you would find that there's simply a new #1 in that list of cheap comfort food. If you have little ones, the American side of the menu is quite cheap. No longer are you paying $7 for a grilled cheese on crusty bread when you're trying to satisfy the immediate needs of a hangry 5 year old. Further, check out the great deals during lunch time. Now that you are past your elitist Nazi like definitions; the Kung pao has fresh zucchini among other fresh vegetables, the rice is actually real rice, not rice substitute as some other reviews may imply, wtf? The chow mein was just a pile of beans sprouts with no vegetables in it , the fried rice was dry and had no flavor and the other items people in our group ordered they said had no taste. If there were 4 people add General Tso's Chicken! What?!!! 6 or more people wanting to eat this spicey but not that unmanageable kind of spicey-no no no this is that take you to the edge of your taste buds flavor spicey and yank ya back with sweet or tangy- So yes 6 people in your party add: Twice Cooked Pork. The GT chicken reeked of tabasco sauce, and managed to crispy on the outside, and slightly undercooked in the middle. The chow mein was mostly raw. The almond chicken on the other hand smelled somewhat ok. If the rest of my meal had not been clucking at me, I may have enjoyed it. The server even argued with me that the chicken was fully cooked. This used to be one of our favorite places, and we used to order takeout about once a month. Recently, we ordered takeout and when I came to pick up the order (right on time), the lobby was packed with other people also waiting for takeout orders. I gave the cashier my name and said I was there for my takeout order. After 45 minutes, and asking several times, the cashier finally gives me my order, which by now is cold. I tell her that I've been waiting almost an hour after the time they said the order would be ready. The second cashier asks a woman (who I'm pretty sure is the owner)if they should give me a discount and the woman says "no". She asks if they should throw in extra fortune cookies, and again the woman says "no". They never apologize for the inconvenience and send me on my way with cold food. A place that is good for big families cuz it's cheap and filling. Portions are enough for 2 meals. This of course is americanized Chinese food but consistent and decent. Once you've eaten Chinese in SF, especially the dim sum, Chinese food anywhere else will never be the same. Unless you're in China, Singapore, HK and Malaysia. We go at least once a week for lunch. C'mon 3.75 for the lunch special??? At that rate I can feed my kids all day everyday on Chinese food heh better than fast food places at least That's insane. I will not rave about the food but it is def. consistent. I always order the chicken chow mein and pork fried rice special and my hubby gets the beef curry and rice which is only about 6.00 bucks. The side who said they didn't like MSG were obviously given food that had NO MSG in it. They were then given a survey. After the food was eaten they were told that they had been served food that contained MSG and right away ppl were saying they knew it because immediately they were getting headaches and generally feeling sick from all the MSG. LOL hahahahaha....seriously ppl do you realize how ignorant that sounds? You probably felt bad from eating something else in the food, the oil or other seasonings. Too much salt and oil will do that to you! Most of americanized Chinese food is fried hence, fried rice? They also had dieticians and specialist explain why it wasn't MSG that made them sick. This place is great for what we call at work "Cheap Chinese"! We love going there for lunch! It is always packed at lunch time and the service is pretty darn good considering almost every table is filled! The food is pretty good considering the price! I usually get the lunch special of Sweet & Sour Chicken, Pork Fried Rice, and a Spring Roll ($5.25)...today I had the General Tso's with Pork Fried Rice ($5.75 + .75 for the pork fried rice as it only comes with white steamed rice!) Comes with hot tea and egg flower soup (or hot & sour soup). Not too shabby! I will be back for sure...I think I will try something new next time. They had something that looked pretty good with veggies, chicken, shrimp, and bbq pork that sounded pretty good, but I really wanted the General Tso's today for some reason. I've never put any stock into review cites, but this restaurant drove me to download this app to leave my own review. By no means am I a picky person. I eat what's on my plate regardless of how much I enjoy it. But this was something else. Never once before tonight as an adult have I eaten nothing upon visiting a restaurant. I was in a very large party of people and I can understand how harsh working in a busy restaurant can be, so I didn't want to give anyone trouble. The first immediate red flag was the soup that came with my meal; it had this gelatinous consistency resembling cum and didn't taste much of anything. My order was simple, the sort of thing someone who doesn't frequent Chinese restaurants might order. Sweet and sour pork, pork chow mein, and an eggroll. Easy. I didn't even recognize that the plate was mine upon recieving it and had to confirm with the waitress because what took up a majority of the plate were bean sprouts. Mind you, I like bean sprouts, but upon witnessing this heaping mound of slime and sprout, I had to ask myself if maybe I was just ignorant and this is how chow mein is supposed to be done. So I dove in, gross. Ok let me try the pork drenched in this unsightly red sauce. It tastes of... nothing. Absolutely nothing. But what it had in store for me was a slightly sweet sauce and a soggy mess. Finally, ah... My safety pick, the eggroll. I've never disliked an eggroll before. That has changed. This soggy brick housed possibly the most disgusting aftertaste I've ever experienced. It's indescribable. Even well over an hour later I can still taste it and it grosses me out. I seriously hope this place makes drastic improvements. I have no plans to ever return, but for future diner's sakes and for the restaurant's well being I hope this criticism is taken to heart. read more
