Went to dosa royale on Diwali and we got the dosa masala and chicken chettinad. The dosa was perfectly crisp and the potato filling a great combination, I did think that the dosa was a bit sour but per my Indian boyfriend that's what it was supposed to taste like. I personally really enjoyed the chicken chettinad though it could have benefitted from a bit more heat. All in all I would go back again, though maybe in warmer weather as the tent outside was a bit chilly read more

I have been waiting for a good South Indian place to open in Brooklyn and my prayers were answered when Dosa Royale opened it's doors. Top notch Indian Restaurant. I have been both in person and ordered from the restaurant through Caviar. The samosas are delicious. They are not the standard you can get from other Indian restaurants. These samosas, especially the coconut samosa are an ode to south indian flavors. The uttapam is nice and spicy- perfect for brunch on a cold morning. The dosas at this restaurant are the star of the show. All of them are delicious but my favorite is the masal dosa. Perfect crapes filled with spices and potatoes to brighten your morning. Overall an amazing addition to Brooklyn. read more

Chennai fish curry- pretty good. Mildly spiced, but still flavorful and the fish was cooked perfectly. Dosa- Hard pass. Bland chutney. Bland sambar. The extra I paid for green chilies amounted to less than 5 tiny pieces- all in the corner of the dosa. read more

So I'm not really a fan of South Indian cuisine but this place is an exception. If you could survive off South Indian food, this place should be on the top of your list. I got the chicken 65 and the chennai style fish curry. Both of which were lip smacking-ly delicious. What better way to wrap your amazing meal with their madras coffee. Great service. I would definitely go back. read more

I like the dosa also in Brooklyn I could not find another dosa or place so this is the only resort although I like dosa at dosa delight in queens but that one is too far from here so this the only choice left I feel there is room for improvement in price and quality if dosa sambhar and chutney I also did not like that when I requested extra sambhar and chutney they charged me extra 3.50 dollars for it read more

When I spot me some dosa, there is a very slim chance I'll be able to resist and that is precisely what happened when I saw these guys at Smorgasburg. I broke my rule of only going for places that don't have actual storefronts and gave in to temptation. I couldn't decide between the regular masala dosa and the spinach paneer dosa ($9 each) and upon voicing my dilemma, the nice girl taking my order told me they can do half and half for $1 more - SWEET! Within minutes I had a freshly made, hot crispy dosa in my hands and I hungrily ripped it open to get at the fillings. While the dosa itself was overall excellently made with good flavor, I had a few minor gripes: 1. The masala potato chunks were WAY too big. It's hard to eat such large pieces of heavy starch. 2. They forgot to put paneer in my dosa!! It didn't take away too much from the taste, but I was really looking forward to some melty cheese. 3. I could've used a bit more spice, but that's understandable considering the primary audience they're catering to. The dosas are bigger and a bit more expensive at their storefront (~$12) so I was happy I still got a well-sized dosa for my $10. The chutneys that came with it were solid too. Overall, really more like 3.5 stars, but bumping them up for potential! read more

My husband and I are South Indian and we grew up eating this kind of food. Authentic south indian food is missing from the Brooklyn scene and they did a really good job. We ordered the following: Mixed Veg Utthapam - great flavor. Both the chutneys and sambar that accompanied were excellent and authentic Idli - again great chutney and sambar Eggplant Kolumbu - great flavor. Reminded me of a similar dish called Bagara Baingan from Hyderabad Coconut rice - delicious. A great side Aviyal - this was the one dish that felt less authentic. It should have been a lot more yogurt and cumin forward, but instead tasted mostly like a coconut curry (still tasty) read more

Living in Carroll Gardens, I'm still heartbroken that this restaurant is no longer on Court Street. I've eaten there so many times but I guess it means that I will have to visit them at their new location. Still, it was so convenient to have Dosa Royale in the 'hood. read more

Agree with other reviewers terrible delivery, taste and quality. Food came 2 hours after ordering and was cold and hard. Butter chicken tasted like microwaved chicken in canned tomato sauce. The dosa was inedible and some of the sauces tasted rotten. Can't blame delivery guy because he was waiting at restaurant waiting for 30 min. Also number listed doesn't work. Don't want businesses to go out of business but don't want people to get food poisoning either... read more

What a monstrous dosa! These Indian stuffed crepe-like things are HUGE (probably close to 24" across). Good news: bigger is better. The dosas that I've tried are crispy and filled with the good stuff. Go for the Spinach & Paneer cheese for a nice vegetarian meal, it won't disappoint. Our table also enjoyed the "Chicken 65" & Cauliflower Lasuni as appetizers. The chicken bites were flavorful and sauce-covered. A little bit of spice and a lotta bit of flavor. The Cauliflower had more kick to it. Both were great starters. For the curry, I'd suggest that you pair your option with the "yogurt rice". This was an interesting, thick basmati-style rice with extra flavor from a plain yogurt that it was combined with. I'm sure that you won't go too far astray when you order any of the "mains" from the curry selection. P.S. Alcoholic Ginger Beer ($6) - Who knew!? Served with a glass of crushed ice and a slice of lime, this was a delicious addition. read more

There is no sanitizing, no one is paying attention to what you order, it's dirty outside, and it is feeling like there is no intention to keep everyone safe. This place was great before the pandemic, but it's gone downhill in an unsafe way. Tables outside are not 6 feet away, and there is no sanitizing between parties. read more

I feel sad giving Dosa Royale such a bad review as I've loved their food for the past 6 years and when it's delivered swiftly it's amazing. However after the second time of waiting over 2 hours I can't trust them any more. When you get home from work at 7.30 and by 9.30 you're trying to find a way of finding out where your food is it's not cool. Because also their phone number goes straight to voicemail and no-one answers. So you have to contact seamless and go through the whole procedure just to get a refund and then find another way of getting food at 10pm. Again, it makes me sad as their food is SO GOOD and I've been loyal for so long but this is it for me. I hope the management finds a way of dealing with the orders more efficiently - maybe they're taking on too many orders to deal with? Who knows but this isn't the way to retain loyalty. read more

Food is okay. Pretty average. But the service is horrible and so so slowww. Everytime I order from here I keep saying it was a rough night and they'll be better next time but no. It's always the same. Next time I'm just going literally anywhere else. read more

I don't feel like I can give a totally accurate rating since I didn't actually try the dosas here, but their lunch special is fantastic! I went with some colleagues for a lunch, and we all got the curry lunch special, which for that day was the chef's choice of two vegan curries: paruppu masiyal and eggplant kulambu. We all ended up getting the eggplant, which was delicious -- a little spicy, but not overpowering. The lunch special came with basmati rice and raita, along with a little salad. The portion is really perfect for a satisfying but not heavy lunch, and the lunch special prices are on point. The four of us were able to eat for under $50! I'd love to come back and try more on the menu. This place is *cash only*, but they do have an ATM inside the restaurant. read more

This place is awesome! I will say that the selections can be hit or miss, but the hits are AMAZING. Dosa is my favorite Indian food restaurants ever. I was introduced to Dosa over a year ago by a friend. Indian food has always offered a sense of comfort whenever I consume it and Dosa does it right. Between the freshness and spice, you cannot beat it. The dosas are freshly prepared and quite large in size. The tamarind and coconut rices are two incredible options that are offered. So good! I always end up ordering a large amount of takeout to bring back to Connecticut with me. The food travels well and reheats the next day just the same. Just had a delicious lunch here and I'm very impressed. It was recommended to me by a South Indian friend and he says the food here is "legit". Ordered the dosa with potatoes and it was delicate, crispy and delicious! The sauces paired nicely with the dosa and I highly recommend you eat it with your hands instead of using the knife and fork. The mango lassi was really refreshing on a hot summer day and was great for cooling off any spiciness. They seem to have a nice beer selection as well. I didn't check if they have any traditional Indian beers, but I hope they do. The guy working there made some nice recommendations for stuff to order next time. My only issue is I wish the prices were a teeny bit lower. It can be a bit pricey for lunch. If the cost was lower, I can see myself eating here 2-3 times a week. I think there's a big opportunity for them to have a tremendous lunch crowd if the dosas were like $7-$9 as a lunch special. That would put them on par with other restaurants in the area. read more

Terrible experience ordering. Terrible customer service from a restaurant that clearly doesn't care about its customers or it's food. We ordered a relatively expensive meal with two curries, dosa and some cauliflower. It arrived and the curry had split open and covered everything, exploding onto the floor and making the whole thing inedible and pretty disgusting. We called up Dosa Royale, hoping for some help, apologies and the change to reorder or offer some form of compensation and instead the person on the phone was rude, confused, clearly had no idea about how to service a customer in any way and ended up saying 'it's not our responsibility, it's whoever delivered it'. How can a company create a service for people and then tell not offer any support to help when they clearly make a mistake and fail to deliver you food. Disgusted. Steer clear of this restaurant to avoid inevitable disappointment. read more

Very welcoming and fun staff! The dosas were huge - however, perfect portion! The seasons blended beautifully - the sauces enhanced the amazing textures and favors! Eaten here 5 times in the past month because the food is excellent. So tasty. Orders always right! Dosas are beautiful and delicious. I like this place! Is it the best Indian I've ever had...no. But it is better than the other options in this area. I've had the masala dosa. It was good but I can't really say more than that because I'm not a huge fan of dosas to begin with. I've also had the samosa chaat which is GREAT. It has a lot of flavor and a little bit of a kick to it which I dig. I've had the butter chicken, lamb chettinad and chicken kadai too. The lamb was overcooked but the butter chicken was decent and the kadai had good flavor. If the outdoor seating is open I would suggest snagging a table out there because the inside is very echoey which makes for a loud dining experience. read more

Have been to Dosa Royale four times in the last 8 months. It's the only South Indian restaurant anywhere near my house, and it's a very good one. I grew up eating dosa, idli, vada, tamarind rice, lemon rice, et al, and what Dosa Royale is serving is the real deal. I'd otherwise have to go to Queens or New Jersey for food like this. Have had items from all over the menu, and I've really liked all of them. I really recommend this place. All this said, I've never gotten delivery from here, and I cannot possibly imagine ordering a dosa by delivery (as it seems a number of reviewers have done). Just seems like an invitation to disappointment. Not a dish made to travel. read more

Went to Dosa Royale tonight and gotta say it was the best Dosa I've had in years. Wasn't sure what to get, so when I saw that there was a dish that shared the nsme name of the restaurant, I went with that. It was huge and delicious. For those of you without an Indian ex-wife who loved dosas, a dosa is like a giant, slightly crunchy wrap filled deliciously prepared Indian vegetables. I thought the Dosa Royale was extremely well balanced in terms flavor with a mild heat. You can get it spicier if that's your thing. But basically, I'm writing this review because I want you to go so that this great local business thrives and I can keep going back for years to come. read more

GUYS YOU CAN ORDER THE FAMILY-SIZED DOSA ROYALE WITH FILLINGS ON THE SIDE!!! If you've read my original review you know that I prefer plain paper dosa. My workmate and I had a lovely lunch last Saturday wherein we rode hard: minced lamb samosas to start (three to an order to be prepared to give over that third to your dining companion because good manners lead to great things!); a massive Dosa Royale with potato masala on the side; and a couple of Kingfishers, each. Then we ordered the rava dosa which was gorgeously crispy, as it should be. But guys. SO MANY WHOLE PEPPERCORNS. Not even kidding because I picked them all out: there were 36 whole peppercorns in this dosa. Listen. I love black pepper. And black pepper is indigenous to Kerela and played a tremendous role in the Spice Trade http://www.history.com/news/hungry-history/off-the-spice-rack-the-story-of-pepper but no. No to a rava dosa studded with whole black peppercorns. If you're reading this review, lovely people of Dosa Royale, perhaps you might use some crushed black pepper instead and serve alongside a whole black peppercorn achar or something? Let's hope so. Because despite making the rave dosa look like a lace doily post peppercorn excision, that thing was super delicious. Thanks for a lovely lunch! read more

They had a booth Smorgasburg in Prospect Park and saw there was no one in line. This should have tipped me off but I decided to give it a shot and ordered a masala dosa (curried potato) because it had been a while since I've tried one. The dosa was just average and it did not have much filling for a $10 item. I know dosas are not supposed to be stuffed like a burrito but the amount of food was meager. I'd skip this place and go elsewhere. read more

My boyfriend and I (a bonafide South Indian) got lunch at Dosa Royale earlier today and we knew we would be back before we walked out the door. Food and service was amazing, giant dosas galore. We also got the idly sambar, tomato and lentil soup, utthapam, and saffron payasam and all were just as flavorful and aromatic. Food came out at a reasonable pace and our server was awesome. Dosa Royale has such a steady slew of positive reviews so far for a new restaurant that I was starting to think all the owner's friends were just writing good reviews to help a brother out. Whether or not that's the case, EVERYTHING YOU'VE READ ABOUT THIS PLACE IS TRUE. This really is exactly what Carroll Gardens, or really anywhere outside of Curry Hill, needs. Dosas, glorious dosas! This place is maybe a bit more expensive than your typical Indian joint, but this place is also much better than your typical no-frills Indian joint. The atmosphere is upbeat and lively, decked out with basic but modern touches, and Dosa Royale is creatively written on the brick wall in Tamil. We dined here on a Monday night and just barely beat the crowds - I can't imagine most places get this busy on a Monday. We started with a few drinks, but I really did have a hard time choosing just one (it was just a Monday after all). I decided on the Pondicherry Punch, which was nice and fruity but not too girly because of the bitters. The Gimlet Royale also looked good, mostly because it was made with actual pink peppercorns, and the traditional mango lassi looked frothy and festive with some freshly grated nutmeg on top. We decided to go with the place's namesake, the Dosa Royale, a massive dosa stuffed generously with 3 different fillings - spinach and paneer, mixed vegetables and potato masala. Seriously, this thing was maybe a foot and a half long. I'm not sure where one filling started and the other one stopped, but every bite was delicious. The dosa was thin and just crispy enough on the edges but soft enough in the middle to hold it all together. I love a meal you can eat with your hands. As big as it was, the 2 of us somehow had no problem finishing it off. We also shared the Chettinad lamb which was perfectly spicy and bursting with complex flavors. We were just full enough at this point but couldn't say no to some gulab jamun for dessert. These three small balls of honey soaked fried deliciousness was just the right amount - what a nice way to end a great meal. I'm already thinking about the things I'm going to order when I come back, which will be very soon! read more

I wish there was room for negative stars. I love dosa. I have family from south india so I know my dosas. 1. There were like 4 staff members just hanging in the back and it took AGES to get service. 2. They forgot part of our order then tried to charge us for it 3. The food came slowly and cold 4. portions were small for the price and not very good 5. Their masala in the masala dosa was wrong. The spices weren't right and the potato didn't have the right texture. Also there was very little for the size of the dosa. 6. their dosas are drenched in ghee. It's all you could taste. Even my dad remarked it was the worse dosa he had. 7. The pricing is way to high for the service and food. I could make a better meal faster at home. This is very sad since it has dosa in its name. I would recommend you run in the opposite fucking direction rather than go here. I get that there aren't any great indian places around but find somewhere else. I've ordered from this place 3 times now and don't have anything positive to say. I had to cancel my last order because who ever was working there decided to schedule my deliver for the next day at 12:30pm. Seamless deliver was set for ASAP and the delivery estimate was 45 min. I waited an hour and looked at the email and saw that whoever was working rescheduled my deliver for the next day. I would expect a phone call from the restuarant if there is anything that comes up with an order, like if they were out of something or they weren't going to bother to deliver the food. This was the last straw for me. I won't be ordering from here again or recommending it as there are much better options in the hood. My other experiences here were not great either. The Avial Curry was overpriced for the portion and extremely bland. I was really disappointed with this after seeing a picture of it. The Masala Dosa was just okay. read more

I'm a Brit. Brits know curry. These guys also know curry. We'd passed a few times and thought about going in. This time we passed at around dinner time and there were a few people inside. We thought we would give it a try and we were not disappointed! The food is reasonably priced and absolutely excellent. The menu isn't huge but that means that they can really focus on the dishes they do to the exclusion of all else. I can honestly say that the dosas my wife and I had were the best we had ever had. HUGE, packed with filling, served with flavourful sauces and delivered by smiling and pleasant staff. What's not to like? A big group of parents with kids came in part way through our meal. We offered to move table so they could all fit better. The waitress was so appreciative they gave us a free dessert - even though we made the offer to move ourselves and it didn't inconvenience us in the least. We'll go back.
