I was just thinking to myself the other day, "this part of Brooklyn lacks a good Indian restaurant." And as if Hanuman or Ganesh heard this desperate mortal's cry for help, they graced Carroll Gardens with this splendid dosa nirvana. Dosa, if you don't know, is a crepe-like specialty of South India. It can be made with rice batter, or lentils or buckwheat (and even quinoa). And they are usually stuffed with all sorts of vegetables, like potatoes, tomatoes, and cheese. The dosa is usually accompanied with different chutneys, and comes with a soup. Now, I hail from the land of dosas in New York. I live very close to the Ganesh Temple in Queens (which has a cantina in the basement and Anthony Bourdain has been known to frequent it), so my expectations for dosas were quite high. I was a bit skeptical when we entered. Well, skeptical may not be the right word. But here is my initial feeling, "wow, this place is so cute!" Exposed brick, beautiful industrial bulbs, an aesthetically pleasing Buddha statue behind the bar, and cute cute elephant statues perched high above. Not to mention, beautiful barmaids and waitresses. "Wait, this can't be a dosa joint, right?" What I am used to is a no-frills dosa joint which usually looks like some Chinese fast-food takeout serving delicious dosas with no ambiance to be found at all. The place was packed on a Sunday night, clearly everyone in the neighborhood found out about this place at lightning speed (they opened on Dec 17), and we were given the option to eat at the bar. We gladly sat down at the cozy bar and immediately greeted by the beautiful and helpful barmaid. They have a few good beers on tap, so I ordered a Kelso nut brown lager. Many choices of wine and cocktails on the menu (including Pondicherry Punch, love the name)! This place is very veggie friendly, so bring that vegetarian in your life here and wow their saris off! We ordered a veggie dosa and also a potato dosa. Now, what impressed me, is that the chef is clearly of Indian descent and he brought out each dish to the table, a very subtle but intelligent gesture to convert skeptics like me into lovers of this place. The dosas were accompanied with coconut and tomato chutney and also a soup. Both dosas were excellent, and spicy. But what I have to say is that the tomato chutney was excellent, by far the best chutney I have ever had. Portion sizes are large here, so two dosas were more than enough. We lingered a little bit longer after eating, chatting and enjoying the lovely ambiance. Great food, good drinks, and beautiful people make for a lovely night out in BoCoCa! **As we were eating, a woman in athletic gear walks into the restaurant and sidles up to the bar and says with exasperation, "this is a dosa place?" Agree with other reviewers terrible delivery, taste and quality. Food came 2 hours after ordering and was cold and hard. Butter chicken tasted like microwaved chicken in canned tomato sauce. The dosa was inedible and some of the sauces tasted rotten. Can't blame delivery guy because he was waiting at restaurant waiting for 30 min. Also number listed doesn't work. Dosa Royale is an approachable Indian restaurant for someone trying Indian food for the first time. The ambiance and the cocktails fit the hipster/yuppie neighborhood really well, and the place is a lot of fun to chill and people watch. While I haven't tried the cocktails myself, the bar menu is creative and well curated. In addition, the food tends to be mild for the first timer. The waitstaff are not Indian, but are well versed in the menu and happy to make you feel comfortable. And the kitchen has a large window where you can see the masters at work and observe their authentic technique. Dosa Royale is notable for its SOUTH Indian food. Please don't come here expecting palak paneer and chicken tikka masala. What you DO come here for are the thalis, which are platters of a little bit of everything, and the namesake dosas, which are gigantic lentil crepes, which come with different kinds of fillings. And for Andy, yes, its normal for the filling to take up only 30% of the dosa. You rip off the crispy dosa shell to pick up the filling inside. Dosa Royale will happily serve vegetarians and meat eaters alike, and while I find that a few dishes in the thali are super spicy, the majority of the foods prepared are made mild unless you ask otherwise. Flavors here trend a little sour - much less cream/ghee and sugar than Americanized North Indian food. They don't puree the food into thick gravies. Portions are just right - I leave full and happy. Prices are indicative of the neighborhood and clientele. If you're looking for cheap dosas, go visit the dosa cart in Washington Square Park. If you're looking for South Indian food translated to modern day Brooklyn, you're in the right place. read more

There is no sanitizing, no one is paying attention to what you order, it's dirty outside, and it is feeling like there is no intention to keep everyone safe. So I'm not really a fan of South Indian cuisine but this place is an exception. If you could survive off South Indian food, this place should be on the top of your list. I got the chicken 65 and the chennai style fish curry. Both of which were lip smacking-ly delicious. What better way to wrap your amazing meal with their madras coffee. Great service. When I spot me some dosa, there is a very slim chance I'll be able to resist and that is precisely what happened when I saw these guys at Smorgasburg. I broke my rule of only going for places that don't have actual storefronts and gave in to temptation. I couldn't decide between the regular masala dosa and the spinach paneer dosa ($9 each) and upon voicing my dilemma, the nice girl taking my order told me they can do half and half for $1 more - SWEET! Within minutes I had a freshly made, hot crispy dosa in my hands and I hungrily ripped it open to get at the fillings. While the dosa itself was overall excellently made with good flavor, I had a few minor gripes: 1. The masala potato chunks were WAY too big. It's hard to eat such large pieces of heavy starch. 2. They forgot to put paneer in my dosa!! It didn't take away too much from the taste, but I was really looking forward to some melty cheese. 3. I could've used a bit more spice, but that's understandable considering the primary audience they're catering to. The dosas are bigger and a bit more expensive at their storefront (~$12) so I was happy I still got a well-sized dosa for my $10. The chutneys that came with it were solid too. I don't feel like I can give a totally accurate rating since I didn't actually try the dosas here, but their lunch special is fantastic! I went with some colleagues for a lunch, and we all got the curry lunch special, which for that day was the chef's choice of two vegan curries: paruppu masiyal and eggplant kulambu. We all ended up getting the eggplant, which was delicious -- a little spicy, but not overpowering. The lunch special came with basmati rice and raita, along with a little salad. The portion is really perfect for a satisfying but not heavy lunch, and the lunch special prices are on point. The four of us were able to eat for under $50! I'd love to come back and try more on the menu. This place is *cash only*, but they do have an ATM inside the restaurant. read more

What a monstrous dosa! These Indian stuffed crepe-like things are HUGE (probably close to 24" across). Good news: bigger is better. The dosas that I've tried are crispy and filled with the good stuff. Go for the Spinach & Paneer cheese for a nice vegetarian meal, it won't disappoint. Our table also enjoyed the "Chicken 65" & Cauliflower Lasuni as appetizers. The chicken bites were flavorful and sauce-covered. A little bit of spice and a lotta bit of flavor. The Cauliflower had more kick to it. Both were great starters. For the curry, I'd suggest that you pair your option with the "yogurt rice". This was an interesting, thick basmati-style rice with extra flavor from a plain yogurt that it was combined with. I'm sure that you won't go too far astray when you order any of the "mains" from the curry selection. P.S. Alcoholic Ginger Beer ($6) - Who knew!? Just had a delicious lunch here and I'm very impressed. It was recommended to me by a South Indian friend and he says the food here is "legit". Ordered the dosa with potatoes and it was delicate, crispy and delicious! The sauces paired nicely with the dosa and I highly recommend you eat it with your hands instead of using the knife and fork. The mango lassi was really refreshing on a hot summer day and was great for cooling off any spiciness. They seem to have a nice beer selection as well. I didn't check if they have any traditional Indian beers, but I hope they do. The guy working there made some nice recommendations for stuff to order next time. My only issue is I wish the prices were a teeny bit lower. It can be a bit pricey for lunch. If the cost was lower, I can see myself eating here 2-3 times a week. I think there's a big opportunity for them to have a tremendous lunch crowd if the dosas were like $7-$9 as a lunch special. That would put them on par with other restaurants in the area. read more

Terrible experience ordering. Terrible customer service from a restaurant that clearly doesn't care about its customers or it's food. We ordered a relatively expensive meal with two curries, dosa and some cauliflower. It arrived and the curry had split open and covered everything, exploding onto the floor and making the whole thing inedible and pretty disgusting. We called up Dosa Royale, hoping for some help, apologies and the change to reorder or offer some form of compensation and instead the person on the phone was rude, confused, clearly had no idea about how to service a customer in any way and ended up saying 'it's not our responsibility, it's whoever delivered it'. How can a company create a service for people and then tell not offer any support to help when they clearly make a mistake and fail to deliver you food. Disgusted. Eaten here 5 times in the past month because the food is excellent. So tasty. Orders always right! Dosas are beautiful and delicious. But you really need to hire a second person to wait tables and answer phones. It's the same person every day! And I'd be as miserable as they seem if it was only me running the floor. read more

Dosa is my favorite Indian food restaurants ever. I was introduced to Dosa over a year ago by a friend. Indian food has always offered a sense of comfort whenever I consume it and Dosa does it right. Between the freshness and spice, you cannot beat it. The dosas are freshly prepared and quite large in size. The tamarind and coconut rices are two incredible options that are offered. So good! I always end up ordering a large amount of takeout to bring back to Connecticut with me. The food travels well and reheats the next day just the same. I like this place! Is it the best Indian I've ever had...no. But it is better than the other options in this area. I've had the masala dosa. It was good but I can't really say more than that because I'm not a huge fan of dosas to begin with. I've also had the samosa chaat which is GREAT. It has a lot of flavor and a little bit of a kick to it which I dig. I've had the butter chicken, lamb chettinad and chicken kadai too. The lamb was overcooked but the butter chicken was decent and the kadai had good flavor. If the outdoor seating is open I would suggest snagging a table out there because the inside is very echoey which makes for a loud dining experience. read more

Went to Dosa Royale tonight and gotta say it was the best Dosa I've had in years. Wasn't sure what to get, so when I saw that there was a dish that shared the nsme name of the restaurant, I went with that. It was huge and delicious. For those of you without an Indian ex-wife who loved dosas, a dosa is like a giant, slightly crunchy wrap filled deliciously prepared Indian vegetables. I thought the Dosa Royale was extremely well balanced in terms flavor with a mild heat. You can get it spicier if that's your thing. Have been to Dosa Royale four times in the last 8 months. It's the only South Indian restaurant anywhere near my house, and it's a very good one. I grew up eating dosa, idli, vada, tamarind rice, lemon rice, et al, and what Dosa Royale is serving is the real deal. I'd otherwise have to go to Queens or New Jersey for food like this. Have had items from all over the menu, and I've really liked all of them. I really recommend this place. All this said, I've never gotten delivery from here, and I cannot possibly imagine ordering a dosa by delivery (as it seems a number of reviewers have done). My workmate and I had a lovely lunch last Saturday wherein we rode hard: minced lamb samosas to start (three to an order to be prepared to give over that third to your dining companion because good manners lead to great things!); a massive Dosa Royale with potato masala on the side; and a couple of Kingfishers, each. Then we ordered the rava dosa which was gorgeously crispy, as it should be. But guys. SO MANY WHOLE PEPPERCORNS. Not even kidding because I picked them all out: there were 36 whole peppercorns in this dosa. Listen. I love black pepper. And black pepper is indigenous to Kerela and played a tremendous role in the Spice Trade http://www.history.com/news/hungry-history/off-the-spice-rack-the-story-of-pepper but no. No to a rava dosa studded with whole black peppercorns. If you're reading this review, lovely people of Dosa Royale, perhaps you might use some crushed black pepper instead and serve alongside a whole black peppercorn achar or something? Let's hope so. This should have tipped me off but I decided to give it a shot and ordered a masala dosa (curried potato) because it had been a while since I've tried one. The dosa was just average and it did not have much filling for a $10 item. I know dosas are not supposed to be stuffed like a burrito but the amount of food was meager. My boyfriend and I (a bonafide South Indian) got lunch at Dosa Royale earlier today and we knew we would be back before we walked out the door. Food and service was amazing, giant dosas galore. We also got the idly sambar, tomato and lentil soup, utthapam, and saffron payasam and all were just as flavorful and aromatic. Food came out at a reasonable pace and our server was awesome. I've ordered from this place 3 times now and don't have anything positive to say. I had to cancel my last order because who ever was working there decided to schedule my deliver for the next day at 12:30pm. Seamless deliver was set for ASAP and the delivery estimate was 45 min. I waited an hour and looked at the email and saw that whoever was working rescheduled my deliver for the next day. I would expect a phone call from the restuarant if there is anything that comes up with an order, like if they were out of something or they weren't going to bother to deliver the food. This was the last straw for me. I won't be ordering from here again or recommending it as there are much better options in the hood. My other experiences here were not great either. The Avial Curry was overpriced for the portion and extremely bland. I was really disappointed with this after seeing a picture of it. The Masala Dosa was just okay. read more

Delicious food and super fast service along with fair prices. So glad of having this new vegetarian spot in Clinton Hill. I wish there was room for negative stars. I love dosa. I have family from south india so I know my dosas. 1. There were like 4 staff members just hanging in the back and it took AGES to get service. 2. They forgot part of our order then tried to charge us for it 3. The food came slowly and cold 4. portions were small for the price and not very good 5. Their masala in the masala dosa was wrong. The spices weren't right and the potato didn't have the right texture. Also there was very little for the size of the dosa. 6. their dosas are drenched in ghee. It's all you could taste. Even my dad remarked it was the worse dosa he had. 7. The pricing is way to high for the service and food. I could make a better meal faster at home. This is very sad since it has dosa in its name. I would recommend you run in the opposite fucking direction rather than go here. I get that there aren't any great indian places around but find somewhere else. The masala dosa is very good, and authentic. I recommend the dosa royale to split between two, although be warned that it is an innovative take on the dosa. Uttapams are also very authentic, as are all their chutneys. If you want to eat what I ate growing up in India every week for a decade, I recommend the masala dosa "with gunpowder on the side" (an oil and chili powder paste). read more
