One of the best dining experiences I've had in Brooklyn--friendly service and incredible flavors of Chicken Tikka, Dal, and homemade rice pudding. After a long day of apartment hunting, I stumbled upon Sapid Indian Restaurant. The moment I walked in, I was warmly greeted by the kindest staff I'd encountered all day. Exhausted and without the energy to browse the menu, I simply asked the server to choose for me. She kindly asked if I was vegetarian, vegan, or if I ate meat. I told her I eat meat and needed something hearty with protein. She curated the perfect meal for me, and I can't praise her choices enough. The homemade rice pudding, in particular, was a revelation--it took me back to childhood memories of my mother's own rice pudding. It was a moment of comfort and nostalgia wrapped in every spoonful. Sapid is the perfect spot for a family dinner. As someone from Indian and Bangladeshi heritage, I know that authentic Indian food is about the spices and the soul of the cook--not the décor or fancy interior design. I'll admit it, I'm one of those people that has never actually been inside Sapid, I've only ordered delivery. But I've ordered delivery several times, and I can confidently tell you that Sapid is solid. Sure, consistency has been an slight issue at times, but our food has pretty much always ranged from good to pretty damn good. On good ol' Seamless they do an appetizer/main special* that is plenty of food, and appetizer-wise the samosas are good (and filling) but I prefer the eggplant app. My lady friend always goes for the Malai Kofta for her main and some garlic naan, and although I wouldn't order the former, I love the latter. Since variety is the spice of life, I can be a tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, or lamb rogan josh kind of guy (or maybe even vindaloo if I'm feeling particularly spicy that day), and I've never been upset about any of them. Sometimes I'm extremely pleased with my choice as well. Delivery is also pretty fast for the most part, but occasionally there are delays. Such is life, when you are paying someone to bring you food from another location. There was one unfortunate time when there was chicken in her malai kofta, and if we were militant vegetarians I'm sure I would be threatening lives and screaming obscenities...but we're not. This is a take out review because I've never actually been in the restaurant but OH MY GOD this is hands down my favorite Indian in the city. We also order the Dinner special - one appetizer, entree and naan for $17.95. Once a week it's always the same, I get samosas as an app, spicy chicken korma as an entree and garlic naan. My fiancé gets the same except for chicken tikka masala as his entree. Always comes with rice, everything is consistently tasty and delivery always arrives within 45-50 minutes without fail. Unfortunately what I received were containers filled with more oil than I use in a month cooking at home. There was no one else in the restaurant, so we were expecting an enjoyable experience. Sadly, this was not truly the case. It took them at least half an hour to take our order. Tonight's outing was a fluke, because I was in the mood for Thai cuisine but the neighboring restaurant only take cash. Too bad! I have had Indian food before, but what made this spot unique was its dinner buffet (Friday to Sunday from 5pm to 9:30pm) for $13.95. Immediately, I thought of the handful of dishes that I know and eagerly walked inside where I happily saw samosas, naan, chicken tikka masala, tandoori chicken, and more. If you're willing to walk an extra ten minutes east or west, you can get better food at a better value but it's not like Sapid is bad, in fact it's pretty good. I just think you can do better. More like 4, but this is the best desi food i've had in the area. SO.... How come nobody told me that lamb saagwala is like crack? Tender, melt in your mouth lamb in a creamy yet SPICY spinach sauce? It is totally awesome that people are writing negative reviews because delivery takes too long. We all like to think we're responsible adults, but when it comes to having to budget an extra 20 minutes for food delivery, we lose our shit. It's impossible for us to call in advance, because we can only contemplate what we might like to eat when we're fucking ravenous. This is so unfair! Why won't these assholes just come to my house and cook the food I want to eat for free? The vindaloo at "spicy" is pretty hot. It's not "overpowering." If it's "overpowering" to you, order it "medium." There's an incredibly obnoxious review of this place here that I won't bother to dissect further. Everything else I've had has ranged from good to excellent. I'd probably just stick to entrees unless you're trying to cash in on the nutso $13.95 appetizer plus naan plus entree plus rice deal. It's always hard to know if a positive Sietsema review means anything. In this case, though, I was pretty confident he'd be on the mark. "Halal" and/or BYOB are always good signs, particularly at inexpensive places. These designations indicate confidence in the kitchen's product and a lack of perceived need to sell high-margin alcohol. The prices here are 1990s. read more

So here's another reason I never want to leave the neighborhood. The first time I got take-out from Sapid, I was a little cranky because the dinner special came to $15.15, which is just a tad pricey for a restaurant wedged in between two auto body repair shops. BUT. A) It's enough food for at least two (really more like three) full meals. Hello, leftovers! B) It tastes AWESOME. C) The folks who work there are so nice. D) It's open LATE. For my maiden voyage I had the Ka Choris appetizer, which was described as lentil dumplings in the menu. It was large enough to be a main course and tasted like I was going down on an angel, albeit very spicy. The Lamb Saag Walla was equally good, with huge chunks of extremely tender lamb in a rich, creamy spinach puree. It was also equally delectable... and equally spicy. In general, all of the food here is both much spicier and much more flavorful than what I've come to expect from Indian restaurants in America. Having never been to India, I'm gonna assume that this means it's more authentic. I hope the owners never get the memo that Americans are pussies who like bland food because what they have going on now is awesome - even though, as a pussy who likes bland food, I have to dump complimentary cucumber yogurt sauce all over everything so I don't die of spice overload. I've now ordered from Sapid several times and tried the Lamb Rogan Josh (good, although the lamb was not as tender as it was in their Lamb Saag Walla), Samosas (fluffy, greasy crust - so yummy) and Bhartha (eggplant with onions and spices: it was good the first time around but unbelievable the next day as leftovers). Everything is spicy. Ask for extra cucumber yogurt. What really did it for me, though, was finding them open and happy to make me food one night at 10:40 pm when I was in the middle of the biggest Indian Food craving I've ever had. I can't speak for service or wait times (I note that almost all the 1 star reviews are people who are pissed off about the wait time... only 2 were about the food) because we've only ever ordered delivery. Appetizer - Vegetarian ================= Samosa: A- The filling is a bit boring (the potatoes and peas are mashed to a pulp, so it has no form; just flavor) but the flavor is very good and the shell is very nicely fried. Pakora: A- For some reason pakoras on the east coast tend to be mealy and oily, so I'm always really happy to find good pakoras. You only get 4 pakoras (that works out to be $1.25 per pakora). Not mealy, not overly greasy. You definitely taste the gram flour. They are the dark red fully coated pakoras (my favorite kind), not the tumeric-yellow variety. Soups ====== Chicken: B+ I've always liked Indian chicken soup. This is a nice one. Not spectacular, but nice flavor and well done. The chicken is white meat only. I wish the soup itself was a bit more complex. Mulligatawny: B+ I had to laugh when I saw this soup. No lentils. LOL! But I'm giving this soup a B+ anyhow. The flavor is very enjoyable and the soup is pretty spicy. I enjoyed it immensely, so B+. Damned be the fact there aren't visible lentils (still makes me laugh). Lamb ===== Lamb Rogan Josh: B+ The meat was very good. Tender and well marbled. The rogan josh sauce was not as floral and slightly more spicy than your typical Rogan Josh (which I personally enjoyed.) Tandoori Main Course ================== Tandoori Chicken: A+ A unique tandoori chicken. They marinated the hell out of this chicken. Usually tandoori chicken has a red outside and pure white inner meat. This is the first tandoori chicken I've ever had where the inside is just as dark as the skin. They must have marinated this fowl for *days*! Dessert ======= Gulab Jamun: A The cheese ball actually tastes like an old fashioned doughnut and Sapid is generous with the honey syrup. Nice! Ordered from Seamless web for lunch without realizing that this place was a bit far from my house. That being said the food was still served in the 30-45 minute window that the website said. However, when the delivery person got here he started railing about how far he had to come and how difficult a ride it was to get to my place and that my tip (18%) wasn't good enough. I apologized but told him I had tipped online because I didn't have any cash on me. He then commenced hitting on me and asking me personal questions about who lived in my place with me and why I wasn't married - it was really uncomfortable and inappropriate. Fantastic. I had been bummed by the lack of really good Indian food in the Park Slope/Prospect Heights area. There hasn't been an Indian restaurant that I've found to be really worth frequenting since Tamarind left from 7th Ave years ago. Then we found a mention of Sapid elsewhere. The vegetarian dishes are delicious and predictably excellent each time we order. Malai Kofta and Saag Panir and my usuals, Samosa is awesome, and the Rasmali is yummy. Wife digs the Daal Makhani. Haven't had any delivery times that have felt terribly long. 30-45 minutes is standard nearly every where, where the food is good anyway. This isn't fast food. I also didn't have any issues with getting asked for more money (surpised that would happen), but I tip decently. Now if I could only find a South Indian joint nearby that makes Dosa! read more

As much as I hate to do it, I have to rate only the food. The people were extremely friendly, but I have yet to eat at an Indian place where that isn't the norm, so the food is what really matters. I ordered chicken tikka masala, and it was entirely too sweet. Way more on the tomato side, as if it had almost a spaghetti sauce base. The rice was also a little bland - no nuts (pistachio, or cardamom, or anything that I've had in other places' rice. Just plain ol' basmati.... My girlfriend ordered tandoori chicken. It was too done and too seasoned. Only so much shan (or whatever this place may use) is needed. I've only had Indian twice since I've moved to NYC, but thus far, it's lackluster. I will find that perfect chicken tikka masala that is the right blend of cream and tomato sauce, with that excellent yogurt-based, beautifully-seasoned marinade for the chicken. By far the best Indian food in this part of Brooklyn. Spicy means spicy, too, which is nice. I'd order delivery, because there's not much to the dine-in experience. It's not the best in the city, but it's as good as a lot of the solid places in Manhattan (Chola, Dhaba) at half the price. Cannot say enough great things about this place. We ordered samosas to start (perfectly crisp on the outside and warm perfection inside) and they came with three dipping sauces. I was immediately hooked. For main courses we ordered tikka masala and peas polau rice. My boyfriend and I were astounded at how great this food was and our server (I think he was the owner) would check us in on us and be so thankful when we said how much we were enjoying our food. Uh, this place is pretty phenomenal. I've only had take-out but it is, without a doubt, head and shoulders above all of the other Indian restaurants in the neighborhood. The spicy dishes are spicy, the creamy dishes are seriously creamy, the meat is fresh and high grade . . . and it's quick. Oh, and the mango lassi . . . the DEA should list this as a schedule one drug. Just thinking about it makes me want to eat the menu in my drawer. The 5 stars are strictly based on the food. I ate here on their opening night and had the Chicken Tikka Masala. To date, it's the best I've had in New York. The Naan was also cooked to perfection. Everything in the restaurant is brand new and super clean which makes this slight germaphobe happy. (aaand I've already ordered take out....twice) Recommendations for the owners on quick and easy restaurant improvements: -You need music. (Indian music is my recommendation) -Add clean and uncluttered pictures/decorations on the walls. -Get a real paper towel holder for the bathroom. -Keep the glass tabletops, but figure out a way to make them not slide around. Called after an hour just to make sure they received my order, the woman who answered confirmed that they had and that it would be delivered soon. Ok sounds great. After 2 hours, no delivery and now they're not answering the phone so I call the service I placed the order through, they call and the restaurant answers for them and tells them it'll be delivered in 20 min. After 3 hours, still not answering the phone and no delivery. Little after 3 hours, receive the food but it's not even the full order - can't be bothered though. We first went here because we live in the neighborhood and wanted to promote the blossoming restaurant business. It was a Saturday night but there was hardly anyone in the restaurant so we were a bit nervous about going in. Luckily we did because the food was savory and delicious. Sean got the Chicken Vindaloo and I got the Butter Chicken. Both were amazingly tasty but beware, the Chicken Vindaloo is not for the faint hearted or sensitive palate. The garlic naan was also amazing! Another night we had them deliver and ordered Lamb Vindaloo and Chicken Curry. Again, the Vindaloo was spicy as all get out. Chicken curry was solid and they didnt skimp on the chicken! We also ordered the vegetable fritter appetizer which was good but very dry. I've been here numerous times since I moved here last year, and the food is consistently delicious. I love their navrattan curry (korma) with the veggies and pineapples, the chicken mahkni (butter chicken), and the chicken tikka masala. Their sauces are creamy but not overly thick. I also can't resist the mango lassi and garlic naan. Sometimes when I go with people, we order the poori, which looks like an inflated balloon. The description cracks me up every time: "This is a fluffy one." (I have no idea why I find this so funny.) I've also tried the samosas and pakoras with people. When you go to the restaurant, prepare to be bombarded by Bollywood. I probably find the music videos they show way more amusing than I should. It can be kind of distracting when you go with people and want to talk with them, but then again, it gives you something on which you can focus if you don't really feel like chatting. The manager is so friendly, and the staff is pleasant. Delivery and take-out are ready quickly. Table service is also quick. My only issue is that they take forever to bring you the check, and once you get it, to process it. I've spent longer waiting for the check than I have for the food to arrive at the table. This place is new, so I truly hope over time the staff will work out a few of the kinks, bringing Sapid to its true potential. The service was impeccable. The food - Chicken Tikka Masala, Tandoori Combo Platter, and Chana Saag were all perfect and delicious. The basmati rice sprinkled with fried shallots is both fragrant and flavorful. The portions were large enough for us to take home plenty of left-overs. The ambiance inside the dining room is my only complaint. There is absolutely nothing inviting about it. When we were seated, the kind lady offered us water, took our orders, and turned on the big flat screen tv to break the silence. A paid program on cleft lip surgeries for third-world children blares in the background. Now, while I am entirely sympathetic to those with cleft lips and bless these organizations for their service, it's just not my choice of entertainment while I dine for lunch. After about 15 minutes, we ask the lady if she could change the channel. The friendly man takes off his shoe, steps onto a chair, and finally, the Bollywood dvd is switched on and the atmosphere is suddenly much more conducive to Indian dining! read more

Sapid is a very welcome addition the the neighbourhood. I'm pretty picky when it comes to Indian food... the well respected Bombay Masala on Franklin didn't really impress me but Sapid definitely did. I tried the Bhartha (roasted eggplant with onion and peas) and the Lamb Saagwala (Lamb with spinach) and both were very tasty. Like a few other reviewers I had watched this restaurant take shape but didn't have high hopes thinking it would be yet another terrible Indian place and I'm over the moon that it's the opposite. It's actually one of the better Indian places I've been to in the whole city and it's at the end of my road. The space lacks atmosphere made worse because a lot of their business is take-out but service is friendly and being new it's very clean. As the word gets out the place will fill up and atmosphere will evolve. So I recommend all Bombay Masala followers to give Sapid a go and taste the difference. read more

Ordered takeout last night and this is the first time I have ever liked Indian food in Brooklyn! Good value if you get the $13.95 appetizer + entree deal (naan and rice pulao included, plus they give you a little container of kheer too, which is cute!). Everything was impressively spiced. The heat level was perfect when we asked for medium. Delivery was pretty fast, too (we're not that far, though). Highlights : Samosa, Lamb Saagwalla, Aloo Gobi Mattar and the Chicken Tikka Masala. The chicken tikka masala is excellent. The tomato cream sauce is rich, fresh and has fresh herbs. Plenty of chicken that is moist inside. I was satisfied. Came here with a large group of 14 people for a birthday party. Even though we didn't make reservations the restaurant was able to accommodate us, basically giving us the whole small dining room area. Place is BYOB and they were happy to provide us with glasses for our bottles of wine. I ordered the Saag Paneer and it was incredibly tasty without being too spicy. The tikka masala sauce was also really great, though it had a spicier aftertaste than the saag. I always order extra naan for the sauce and it was fluffy and tasty. Because it was my friend's birthday, they gave each person a Galub Jamoun (sweet cheese ball) for dessert. The food was great, but it doesn't get 5 stars because of the service. Everything was very slow, from taking our orders to refilling our water glasses. It took a half hour and repeated requests for them to give us the bill. I thought this could have been because we were such a large party, but apparently it happens all the time. The order was never received or delivered but I was charged and I've been going back and forth with them since that day and I'm still waiting for a refund.
