Much of what people are familiar with in Indian food (namely, curry) is North Indian food. Dosa Royale, on the contrary, specializes in South Indian food. Dosa Royale moved to a new space adjacent to Strange Delight. The space is bigger and recently renovated, and also much closer to the G and C trains, not to mention Atlantic Av station. There tables on both sides of the restaurant and a bar at the left. When it's nice out there's some tables out front. Upon being seated, water was served almost immediately. It was busy on my most recent visit, so it took a little bit to put in our order. Once we did, food came out quickly. On my first visit I ordered biryani and naan, asking for the biryani to be extra spicy. The waiter (who may have been the owner) gladly obliged. I took my girlfriend on my next visit and tried a few more dishes. The Chicken 65 was delightfully spicy, but not overly so. The idly in sambar was also tasty. Of course, the star of the show is the Dosa Royale. You may see people in the restaurant eating dosa that are bigger than a tray. These are regular size dosa. The Dosa Royale is bigger than the table and comes with three different fillings. It's not just delicious, but visually stunning and a great deal at only a few dollars more than the regular dosa. I'll certainly be back. A South Indian place is always a welcome addition to the neighborhood. read more

I had such high hopes for a dosa place in fort Greene, but was so disappointed. Food: the food is really bland. We got the family dosa which comes with three fillings: masala potatoes, cabbage and spinach. Everything lacked flavor. Everything needed more salt. The chutneys were also not good, I was surprised at how bad the coconut chutney was. They also give a very tiny amount of sambar. We also got the chicken - which was very sweet. Too sweet for my liking. The Hyderabad goat curry was fine, but lacked meat. It was just pieces of bone. I could not be happier that the Dosa Royale opened walking distance from our home in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. A few days before the restaurant officially opened, I was standing outside the soon to open restaurant. I was checking out the menu and talking to another neighbor who was also looking forward to the grand opening The owner, an absolutely lovely gentleman, Venkat Raju, came outside to greet us. He asked us if we would like to come inside and see the restaurant before they opened. Of course, we both said "yes." The owner could not have been nicer or more welcoming. The space is modern, warm and cozy. I let him now, that once they officially opened that I would be back. We have already had dinner at Dosa Royale twice. We loved everything about it and, it is definitely going to be our regular spot for delicious south Indian food. The food was fantastic. The owner remembered me, came over to our table to chat and went out of his way to help with recommending dishes and made us feel so welcome. Everything we ordered during both visits delicious. Incredible service and amazing food. Some of the dishes we had (and highly recommend) - veggie samosas - crispy, not oily, just yummy. The Dhai Vada - soft, fried lentil fritters with a creamy spiced yogurt and herb sauce. We ordered a Masala Dosa. Wow, it was so good and very large. Best Dosa I have eaten. For bread we had Poori - my favorite. For a curry dish we had the veggie Korma and, enjoyed it very much. We also had the Butter Chicken served with rice, another wonderful dish. Wanted to find a cozy dinner spot and stumbled upon Dosa Royale! On Valentine's Day we were seated right at the bar which was perfect. We ordered a sweet potato dosa and lamb shank biryani to share as it was a special of the day. The dosa was thin and crispy and came with delicious sauce. The biryani was very spicy with intense spices which I enjoyed! The staff and owner were so kind and attentive and we were chatting throughout our dinner. Perfect Sunday brunch. Food was fresh and tasty, and was fun to eat. Added an egg (+$1.50 according to menu ) and made it spicy (+$1) Didn't feel great that the prices listed on the menu for "add-on's" was half the price vs. what we were charged. There's not too many places you can order Dosa for delivery, so I was excited to try Dosa Royale. We ordered the original potato dosa, a sweet potato dosa, fried cauliflower and okra. The original potato dosa was amazing. The potato was seasoned perfectly, the dosa had great flavor and texture, and it was a huge portion - especially for the $12 price. I thought regular potato was substantially better than the sweet potato. On the downside, the okra was ok and the cauliflower was lacking by a lot. I was really looking forward to trying this place, as I'm an Indian food addict. I ordered the Cauliflower 65 and the Kadai Chicken - both favorites of mine. The cauliflower arrived in a heavy bath of ketchup and ended up tasting overwhelmingly dull. It needs to be much drier; just a couple of drops of ketchup would do, not half a bottle. The Kadai Chicken was okay but not great. The spice base was right, but the dish came off more like a thick soup because of the excess sauce and cream. Again, it needed to be drier. My partner's dosa was tasty, but the filling was a bit sparse. But we'll probably still go back to give the restaurant another shot, but definitely not to order these same dishes. This place used to one of my favorite go to places. Even my folks loved it! But for the past two years it went downhill. Before the food was authentic, it had spice, taste and was spicy. Now maybe they are trying to attract the larger crowd and turn the cuisine Americanized - it tastes bland and super sweet. I once got chicken 65 and Gobi. They were super sweet like candy and the chicken had a bitter aftertaste. The quality is so bad. No idea what happened. Dosas are my favorite, now the chutney and sambar is so bad. I really just didn't feel like cooking when I got off work yesterday and I remembered this spot was in the neighborhood and fairly affordable. I got: - Vegetable Samosas ($7) comes with 2 and 2 sauces - Sweet Potato Masala ($13) + add gunpowder seasoning ($1) - Coconut Rice Pudding ($7) The rice pudding may have been on the smaller side, but it was the perfect amount for me to where I didn't feel overstuffed. The veggie samosas were delicious and crispy and stuffed well. They were mild in flavor but a nice start to my dinner. The sweet potato dosa was HUGE, I mean just look at my pics, it took up the whole table which made me super happy. The dosa was wafer thin and delightfully crispy. I lived on Masala Dosa's in London. They were one of my fave foods! I haven't had one in the 20+ years I have been back in the US, so I was very excited to find and try Dosa Royale's version. First, the pros. It is so tasty with incredible sauces. I loved it! Now the con. There is far too much crepe and too little filling. I ended up throwing away more than half of the crepe. Not sure why they are not totally stuffed and rolled then cut in half like I am used to. But that said, I will still order again because it was delicious! read more

Inconsistent. Sometimes I have a great meal here, sometimes it's flavorless. The masala dosas are generally reliable though sometimes lacking salt. The condiments tend to be quite good. But I recently ordered the spinach paneer and it was so bland that I ended up frying up onions, garlic, ginger, and chilis with tomatoes, cumin and turmeric and mixing it in. Lol! I had the spinach and paneer dosa, which came with sambar and two types of chutney. I liked that the sambar had a nice balance of sweetness with the warming spice, which is how we normally make it at home. The dosa itself had a good texture: not too dry even though the dosa was huge. The only drawback is that it started to get a little soggy at the end as the spinach soaked into the dosa. I don't live in NYC these days, but I loved this place when I visited in the summers of 2023 and 2024. I married into a South Indian family and thought the food here was the closest US restaurant equivalent to the home-cooked food I've eaten in Karnataka. But I just went again today -- the first time in a year, I think -- and was really disappointed with the okra dish, which I've had pretty much every time I've visited before. In the past the okra was perfectly cooked -- cooked just enough, but still bright green and had some crispiness to it -- and had plenty of moong daal and coconut, in South Indian style. Today's dish was cooked far more (no brightness about it) had no moong daal or coconut that I could detect (though the menu said it did) and had, I think, tomato (which was not listed on the menu). It was a completely different dish, and to my mind a far inferior and less distinctive one. The Avial was good, as I remembered, and my daughter's dosa was good, ditto the Chicken 65, though maybe it was a bit sweeter than in the past. But I got the distinct feeling that this place, which our server told us has a new cook, is heading in a direction more typical of Indian restaurants in America, which is a drag. This place is just amazing! The food portions were huge (if you plan on ordering a dosa and a lassi then you'd likely struggle with getting a starter, even if you're splitting with a friend). Cauliflower was crispy and flavorful. The Lassi was thick in texture and rich in taste but not too sweet. The dosa was just incredible. Really crispy, ginormous in size and tasty too! My husband & I were craving Indian food, but didn't want to travel to Queens or Curry Hill Manhattan - so we found one within Bklyn. We ordered to share: samosa chaat, spinach paneer, tikka chicken, masala dosa. The only thing that was delicious was the masala dosa. The rest were not delicious and very mediocre. I have not been lucky to find a good Indian spot in Bklyn. Service was horrifyingly slow and staff was very inattentive. Stopped by on a Thursday afternoon and was seated almost immediately with the option of inside and outside. My friend and I got the masala Dosa, Lamb Dry, and a mango lassi. The dosa here is truly on point and incredibly fresh, crispy (but with the soft goodness) and buttery. Love the spice level and was pleasantly surprised by the portion sizes. 1st time pickup at this restaurant. Masala Dosa is large and taste decent. Potatoes masala which comes with masala dosa was too salty. Sambar was sweet. I've had sambar in many South Indian restaurants and this was first time it was sweet. Portion size of sambar which comes with Masala Dosa is tiny. I had Masala Dosa in many places in NJ, NYC, and Queens, and they all provide decent portion of Sambar with Masala Dosa. So for around $14 Masala Dosa should be server with a larger portion of Samba and Sambar should not be sweet, unless this is a new twist to Sambar I never had... I live in Bensonhurst Brooklyn and would love to be able to eat South Indian food, which we have none, unless I drive downtown Brooklyn or Williamsburg. My girlfriend and I got lunch to go last week. She recommended the paneer and spinach dosa, which was definitely a good choice. It was fresh and large and filling - even without any meat! This is a place I'd long wanted to try, but didn't want to order delivery from, in thinking that dosa is a food that doesn't travel well. I finally made it here for dinner on a Monday night with a friend. We didn't make a reservation, but came at 6 and were seated immediately. They didn't have heaters at the time that we visited, but we bundled up in our jackets and layers so it was okay. There was one other table dining outside when we visited, but they came a little later on, so we mostly had the whole outdoor area to ourselves. As you can tell by the name, Dosa Royale specializes in dosa, an Indian bread. They do have curries on the menu, but we didn't try any of these. My friend ordered the plain dosa, while I had the mixed veggie uttapam. The dosa is more of a large, very thin flatbread served alongside dips. The uttapam was described by the server as a thicker pancake-style bread. The two breads were very different, although both were excellent. Since we are in the colder months, my preference was to have the uttapam since it was more comforting and filling to have on a cold night. The uttapam had a nice, fluffy texture, and was stuffed with vegetables. I really enjoyed this, and would come here to get it again. Prices were on the cheaper side, and service was pleasant. It's not that often that I see a specialized dosa restaurant in NYC so would definitely recommend Dosa Royale. read more

I ordered take out here. I got the butter chicken and samosas. The butter chicken seemed like it was just grilled chicken in the tomato cream sauce. It also had a pretty small portion of chicken in the sauce. I had a ton of leftover sauce and was still hungry after eating the meal. The sauce had a very strong tomato flavor so I would not recommend for someone who doesn't love tomato. It was not spicy. I would also not recommend if you're very hungry. There might be more filling options. the samosas were average. They came with the mint chutney which was tasty. The tamarind sauce was a little watery but had good flavor.
