I live in the neighborhood and really want to like this place. I've tried it a few times and I must say this is perhaps the worst dosa in NYC. Beware of ordering from here on Uber Eats. I placed an order on behalf of a friend as a gift. The delivery person didn't read my instructions, tried delivering to a neighbor instead, and then lied about completing the delivery without even giving it to the neighbors. The venue staff insisted they could nothing and that I would have to get a refund from Uber Eats. I ultimately had the re-order the whole meal, which was maybe the restaurant's intention the whole time. Uber is not offering a refund. Pretty suspicious all around. read more

I ordered take out here. I got the butter chicken and samosas. The butter chicken seemed like it was just grilled chicken in the tomato cream sauce. It also had a pretty small portion of chicken in the sauce. I had a ton of leftover sauce and was still hungry after eating the meal. The sauce had a very strong tomato flavor so I would not recommend for someone who doesn't love tomato. It was not spicy. I would also not recommend if you're very hungry. There might be more filling options. the samosas were average. They came with the mint chutney which was tasty. The tamarind sauce was a little watery but had good flavor. Do NOT support these guys. I ordered delivery from then for the first time last night and my food took too long!! So after about a 1.5 hours wait after ordering, I call the place. No answer. I call again and let it ring and ring. No answer. So almost two hours in, I decide to drive up there and ask for my money back. I tried calling one more time on my way over there, and the guy finally picks up. I complain to him that, "I've waited nearly two hours for my food and why wasn't anyone answering their phone, it's very unprofessional and..." *dial tone* Dude just hung up on me! So my husband calls me right after on the other line to say the food arrived (as I was driving there and was just hung up on). So I swung back around and went home. Lo and behold, I get home, a tiny tiny bag is sitting on my kitchen counter (Mind you, my husband hates Indian food, so this was just for me and came to $28 with tax and delivery). I unwrap the poori first and lo and behold the food is cold as ice. Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT support this place. Maybe it was a bad night. Deliveries frequently have missing items, inaccurate ETAs (they send a "delayed" immediately after confirming your order, and their portion control is ridiculous. I met a friend from Brooklyn here. We are both South Indian dosa fans. My friend recommended the onion rava masala dosa and the shared plate okra. Both excellent recommendations. I think their rava masala is even better than adyar ananda Bhavan and Saravana Bhavan. That is saying a lot for a hard core Chennaite like me. read more

I have been a big fan of Dosa for many years but the last several experiences have been so bad I don't think I will come back. I order the cauliflower lasuni and spinach channa almost weekly. The last several times the quality has been awful. The cauliflower is extremely expensive and lately every time i order there are less and less cauliflower and less and less flavoring. At this point you get 2/3 less than what dosa used to give when they opened and at double, if not triple, the price. The spinach channa is practically water when before is was thick and creamy. This place is IT. Incredibly crisp dosas, addictive rice (tamarind and coconut are too good), and good hearty curries (lamb is my favorite). Service is polite and hands-off. Came here with a friend and just tried the plain dosa and Masala dosa. They were pretty good and pretty authentic. The only time I've ever had dosas was when I was in India couple months ago, and it tasted pretty much similar. The dosas are huge! Just like in India. They were thin and crispy, and the chutneys that they were served with were flavorful. I thought one dosa wasn't gonna be enough food for me, but in the end, I was actually full/content. The Masala in the Masala dosa was ok. I also ordered the mango lassi and it was good. Full of mango flavor, and not overly sweet. It was a good blend of yogurt and mango. I recommend trying this. Dosa Royale is the place to be for dosa lovers! I've ordered it a few times through Seamless and been impressed with the fluffiness and quality of the bread/pastry, but wasn't blown away until I ate a fresh Dosa at the restaurant. I walked by and went in for lunch and had the masala (my favorite) in the restaurant and was able to enjoy the warm fluffiness of the dosa that I wasn't getting during delivery. I've also tried the sweet potato masala, veggie samosas (delicious) and the onion rava (also delicious). The dipping sauces are really great, my favorite is a ginger one that comes with the onion rava but I like all of them. The masala is my favorite dosa but I plan to try all of them at some point. I want to preface this review with nothing but praise for the food - the dosa's are crispy and authentic and the Sambhar is really delicious. However, we went to the outdoor restaurant on Sunday and we were appalled to see the server dressed like he's going to the gym - arm pits visible and no mask on. I know it's a violation and I could've called 311 but I like this place. I hope the owner is reading this because that was really despicable. Ordered from seamless, haven't dined in before. Dosas are well done but the onion rava dosa left me craving for more - which is bad and good. Found it was too thin, almost like tissue paper and ended up being more messy than typical rava dosa. Sambar and coconut chutney were pretty good. Yet another Indian restaurant in the city that's just OK and another dosa disappointment. I travelled all the way from Manhattan to Brooklyn to try their rawa masala dosa but turns out it's off their menu even though their website says they still have it. I got the masala dosa instead. The sambar was too sweet and thick, the chutney portions were too small, and the dosa itself was big but soft, lukewarm and coated with flavorless gunpowder masala. I go here here for the dosas about once a month, but haven't tried the curries. The rava dosa in particular is recommended. My wife finds the masala dosa to be very good. The chutneys and sambar that accompany the dosas are really good, especially the tomato chutney. It's cash only which can be a bit inconvenient at times. read more

I have been wanting to try this place for a long time and it sure didn't disappoint! I live within walking distance, and I always walk by this place on my way to the grocery store or the gym. I grew up around a lot of Indian food and culture, so I've always been picky about my Indian food (you'd be surprised what they pass as "Indian food" in some places). So the day finally came when I decided to try Dosa Royale, and of course I had to get a dosa. My friend and I actually got a couple different kinds and split them. They were huge and delicious! Just like the dosa I'm familiar with from when I was growing up! They were so light and crispy with a lot of fresh Indian spices. They are served with a variety of flavorful dipping sauces. They were all so good I couldn't decide which one was my favorite! By the end of the meal I wished I had had more dosa to dip and finish the sauces! But I left full and satisfied. I was just thinking to myself the other day, "this part of Brooklyn lacks a good Indian restaurant." And as if Hanuman or Ganesh heard this desperate mortal's cry for help, they graced Carroll Gardens with this splendid dosa nirvana. Dosa, if you don't know, is a crepe-like specialty of South India. It can be made with rice batter, or lentils or buckwheat (and even quinoa). And they are usually stuffed with all sorts of vegetables, like potatoes, tomatoes, and cheese. The dosa is usually accompanied with different chutneys, and comes with a soup. Now, I hail from the land of dosas in New York. I live very close to the Ganesh Temple in Queens (which has a cantina in the basement and Anthony Bourdain has been known to frequent it), so my expectations for dosas were quite high. I was a bit skeptical when we entered. Well, skeptical may not be the right word. But here is my initial feeling, "wow, this place is so cute!" Exposed brick, beautiful industrial bulbs, an aesthetically pleasing Buddha statue behind the bar, and cute cute elephant statues perched high above. Not to mention, beautiful barmaids and waitresses. "Wait, this can't be a dosa joint, right?" What I am used to is a no-frills dosa joint which usually looks like some Chinese fast-food takeout serving delicious dosas with no ambiance to be found at all. The place was packed on a Sunday night, clearly everyone in the neighborhood found out about this place at lightning speed (they opened on Dec 17), and we were given the option to eat at the bar. We gladly sat down at the cozy bar and immediately greeted by the beautiful and helpful barmaid. They have a few good beers on tap, so I ordered a Kelso nut brown lager. Many choices of wine and cocktails on the menu (including Pondicherry Punch, love the name)! This place is very veggie friendly, so bring that vegetarian in your life here and wow their saris off! We ordered a veggie dosa and also a potato dosa. Now, what impressed me, is that the chef is clearly of Indian descent and he brought out each dish to the table, a very subtle but intelligent gesture to convert skeptics like me into lovers of this place. The dosas were accompanied with coconut and tomato chutney and also a soup. Both dosas were excellent, and spicy. But what I have to say is that the tomato chutney was excellent, by far the best chutney I have ever had. Portion sizes are large here, so two dosas were more than enough. We lingered a little bit longer after eating, chatting and enjoying the lovely ambiance. Great food, good drinks, and beautiful people make for a lovely night out in BoCoCa! **As we were eating, a woman in athletic gear walks into the restaurant and sidles up to the bar and says with exasperation, "this is a dosa place?" Reality has slapped me in the face once more. Just when I am close to assuming that biryani, kebabs, and lassis are the gist of Indian cuisine... My Southeast Asian peeps here gave me a quick shake up! And I have been converted! Dosa it is! This vegetarian dish is playful yet light leaving my palates dancing. The last time I checked my guts are not screaming bloody hell from the heavy concoction either. Finger food with dosa bread which is crispy and thinner than crepes, wrapped around ample amounts of delicious lentils and root vegetables. Served with variations of curry and chutney-based dippings. Please give me more! Disclaimer: Traditional dosa (ESP the familia) consist of a way bigger portion than the one we were served. Dosa Royale is an approachable Indian restaurant for someone trying Indian food for the first time. The ambiance and the cocktails fit the hipster/yuppie neighborhood really well, and the place is a lot of fun to chill and people watch. While I haven't tried the cocktails myself, the bar menu is creative and well curated. In addition, the food tends to be mild for the first timer. The waitstaff are not Indian, but are well versed in the menu and happy to make you feel comfortable. And the kitchen has a large window where you can see the masters at work and observe their authentic technique. Dosa Royale is notable for its SOUTH Indian food. Please don't come here expecting palak paneer and chicken tikka masala. What you DO come here for are the thalis, which are platters of a little bit of everything, and the namesake dosas, which are gigantic lentil crepes, which come with different kinds of fillings. And for Andy, yes, its normal for the filling to take up only 30% of the dosa. You rip off the crispy dosa shell to pick up the filling inside. Dosa Royale will happily serve vegetarians and meat eaters alike, and while I find that a few dishes in the thali are super spicy, the majority of the foods prepared are made mild unless you ask otherwise. Flavors here trend a little sour - much less cream/ghee and sugar than Americanized North Indian food. They don't puree the food into thick gravies. Portions are just right - I leave full and happy. Prices are indicative of the neighborhood and clientele. If you're looking for cheap dosas, go visit the dosa cart in Washington Square Park. If you're looking for South Indian food translated to modern day Brooklyn, you're in the right place. read more

The other reviews were right about poor takeout experience. I just opened my bag and saw that an item was missing. I also ordered the masala chai and they gave me like half a cup of it in a pint sized container. I'd try to eat in (outside) if you can, and if you're picking up your food just check inside the many to make sure everything's there. I don't really understand why they have such a problem getting takeouts right judging by the reviews, it's strange.
