Came here on a whim with a friend as we were doing a food crawl in Flatbush/Kensington. We didn't even know this place existed, but after leaving the first spot, bumping into this one and seeing the review about the "biggest masala dosa", we had to try it. Spoiler, we never made it to any of the other locations because we were so full. Jalsa provide fare from all over India and makes paneer in house. They have plenty of seating and can take care of large catering parties. As is customary, they have a Sunday lunch buffet. We came on a rainy Saturday afternoons and there weren't many patrons dining. We went with the masala chai, mango lassi, lamb kati roll, and a ghee masala dosa with gun powder, upon recommendation. -The masala chai was perfectly blended, with sugar on the side to sweeten to one's liking. -The mango lassi was really good, but a bit thicker than I'd like; good tartness. -Lamb kati roll was really good, larger than expected. The flavours were well balanced and the paratha had a good flake to it. There was A LOT of lamb inside. -The ghee masala dosa was the shining star; it must have been 2.5, if not 3 feet long. The edges were super crispy like a chip, and the masala potato pilling was delicious If I could do it all over again, I'd only eat here and not eat ahead of time, since this was enough food to fill a party of two (maybe add in a samosa or two). The Indian food in Brooklyn is mediocre and this is well below the low bar that the average Indian restaurant sets. So I was near by with a friend and he wanted some Lena is around Brighton but I was able to talking into this place that I yelped . Ok really 4.5. Food is 5 star. Absolutely outstanding. I've been looking for a great Indian place in Brooklyn for 30 years--I finally found it. Why not 5 stars? I walked into a dining room covered in drop cloths and paint cans. The staff is more interested in paint samples and cleaning rather than service. No one asked me how everything was (fantastic). It's freezing, never took off my coat. Waiting for someone to come over so I can pack up my leftovers and pay. For awhile. That being said, I dream about the palak chat. It's truly amazing. Jalsa is like a hidden gem! It's so spacious and homey inside, and the food is delicious and filling. We came in hungry and ordered two dosas between three of us, but take a good look at the photos and the size of these bad boys before you decide to do the same. They're huge, but so delicious, crispy, and starchy. The sauces pair so well with it, and they're just FUN. I only wish they had more filling to make a better dosa to filling ratio, but I highly recommend the masala one. I wish I got a photo but the stand out and the reason why this is 5 stars is the vegetable samosa chaat. I have never even had chaat before in my life, and that was a grave error because that dish was so insanely good I'm still thinking about it. And the fact that we got to eat it with pieces of the humongous dosa just elevated it even more. We also ordered a chicken tikka masala and a saag paneer-- both excellent, with garlic and rosemary naan. I could eat this naan as a meal. LOVE this place! Yes, BYOB is cool, but even without it, this food is off the hook! The dosas are bigger than my thighs, everything is top-notch delicious, well prepared. Staff is extremely kind and warm. Mango Lassis have honey in them. I can't recommend this place enough. We take friends here all the time when they come into town to visit. Still good: Chicken vindaloo: Good! A bit tangy and well-spiced, but unfortunately not actually spicy. Not sure if this is way better than others out there. $14. Paneer makhani: Sauce is tasty, a bit sweet, but not as good as saag. $13. Some drawbacks are that they charge a credit card fee of 3% :( and somehow the food is never spicy, even when ordering a vindaloo or marking "spicy" on the website. Huge selection of vegetarian and vegan offerings. We ordered 4 appetizers for the 5 of us and appreciated that they came out one at a time - we had ample time to savor and discuss each one. The dosa is epic! The sweet hostess instructed us novices on how to eat it. The main dishes/rice/sauces were brought to the table by a robot - how else could all this food be delivered at the same time? More and more groups came in throughout the evening and we noticed other groups in the other room (the place is quite large). You will be pleasantly surprised by the bill. I have been trying to find a decent delicious Indian restaurant in Brooklyn for awhile. I am so happy because I have found it here! This place was recommended to us from a friend. We were so hungry so I ordered a lot of foods to try! The foods we ordered were: 1) paalak chaat, 2) dahi puri, 3) masala dosa, 4) yellow daal curry, 5) butter shrimp, 6) garlic naan, 7) chicken dum biryani, 8) mango lassi. Paalak (Spinach) Chaat - Highly Highly recommend this item! So damn delicious & it was packed with so much textures and taste. I would reorder this in a heartbeat! SUPERB! Dahi Puri - This was delicious & also packed with so much taste. It can get messy eating this because once you bite into it, the yogurt concoction squirts out. And also, you have to eat it right away or else the shell outside becomes soggy. *Because yogurt is filling, this appetizer made us full & this was the 2nd item that came (and we had 5 more food items to try). Arrived for dinner and there was street parking. The entrance is huge is spacious. The dining section was a bit smaller than expected, but with nice covered tables and chairs. We wanted to try a lot of things from the menu and so we ordered the cheese dosa, which was very tasty and came with 3 different dipping sauce. The texture was amazing and crispy and a bit of a chew from the cheese, the cheese wasn't a strong cheese either. The pani puri was so light and crispy and lovely with a sweet, and sour water mixture to add on. I really enjoy the pani puri, always fun to eat. The chicken biryani was flavorful and fluffy, but a bit dry, but what surprised me was the naan that covered it, it soaked the tiger shrimp curry so nicely. The curry was flavorful, a bit too sweet, but still very tasty. The lamb chops were good and still slightly pink on the sizzling pan, there was an outer layer which was soft that I didn't enjoy, but it was tender and tasty. The service was attentive when needed. I'm a long islander and prior to today have not attempted to try any Indian place in Brooklyn. Boy am I glad we decided to try this place. Order was: Chicken tikka regular Chicken tikka spicy palak paneer Palak chaat Garlic naan Onion kulcha Chicken jalfrezi Tandoori ghost chicken Yellow rice x2 White rice First of they give you some kind of side sauces which are delicious but for me what stood out was the palak chaat. This was an entirely new experience and amazing and unexpected in its flavor combination. I won't go into details about the other dishes but I believe will suffice to say they were all as delectable as we'd had hoped. Ghost pepper tandoori chicken for me was a bit light on spice, but then again I love heat and lots of it. Some of the dishes had whole pieces of seasoning in them which was strange, but didn't reduce the enjoyment. Order was ready pretty much on time and the staff were friendly and attentive. The chicken marsala could be more tender but the flavor is so good (makes up for it! We've ordered 3x now and have not encountered anything negative and welcomes the friendly customer service. Example, we ordered garlic naan but they ran out so someone actually called us to ask us if it's ok to swap it for regular. Some restaurants will just replace & sub and not even tell you! I will say, the only downside to delivery is their quoted delivery time. Totally understand it can be outside of their control. Jalsa has long been on my list, especially after someone claimed that Jalsa is the best Indian restaurant in Brooklyn. After ordering takeout from there, I would agree. It offers an extensive menu of northern and southern fare, as well as meat, vegetarian, and even vegan dishes. Tempted by so many delectable options, we had a difficult time deciding what to order. We ultimately selected the vegetarian palak chaat, Jalsa chicken dum biryani, and the paneer nizami, accompanied by two pieces of garlic naan. The quantity and quality were astounding. By far my favorite was the palak chaat appetizer, with the mixture of sweet, savory, and slightly spicy, as well as crunchy. The mixture of spices in the biryani is unlike anything I've had before. The chicken was slightly dry, but still very good. The cheese in the paneer nizami was also the creamiest, freshest, and smoothest I've ever had, putting to shame all the rubbery instances of paneer I've ever had in the past. The rich, slightly sweet sauce was also delicious. This amount of food was sufficient for two meals for two people. I only wish that main entrees like the paneer nizami came with rice (although it's explicit in the menu that rice and naan must be ordered separately). I had jackfruit biryani and a mango lassi. The biryani had nice flavors to it and was a pretty generous portion. The lassi was also just the perfect amount of sweet. The staff threw in a free palak chaat with my order as well, which I appreciated. The chaat was crispy and had good flavor contrast coming from the tamarind chutney. Ordered online for pickup and the wait time was about 30 mins from order to ready. The estimated wait time they tell you after you place the order online is pretty on point. Total came out to be about $45. The garlic naan smelled sooo good on the drive home. Upon taking out all the food when I got home, I thought the curry portions were a bit small because it came in small containers. However, when I poured it all out on a plate, it was a decent portion. I heated everything up with the rice and naan. Food was delicious. Definitely liked the flavor of the chicken vindaloo more than the lamb vindaloo. I didn't like the strong smell of the lamb, which I thought they could've did a better job at masking. Chicken was moist. The vindaloos paired with both the garlic naans and yellow rice was perfect and super delicious. Definitely hit the spot. One thing I really disliked was the fact that none of the curries came with rice so one star taken off for that. Of all the Indian restaurants I've been to, they've always included complimentary rice with the orders but not this place. Rice needs to be ordered separately and is $3. They give a decent portion for it though. I was curious and excited to try the eggplant chaat. However, I didn't end up liking the flavor. I feel assaulted after spending this much money. The garlic naan - one piece was burnt, the other undercooked. The chicken tikka masala had chunks of cartilage throughout. The paneer nizami was so spicy, it was barely edible (please note: I'm Indo-Caribbean by way of so I'm more than accustomed to handling heat in my food). In addition, there were WHOLE-ASS pieces of cardamom, which I bit into. If you've ever bit into a cardamom pod, you know how extremely unpleasant that is, and you know "extremely unpleasant" is an understatement for the taste that's left in your mouth. The only redeeming item in our order were the samosas which were fine, nothing amazing. I spent $55 plus a $10 tip for 2 entrees, an order of naan, and an order of samosas. In the middle of nowhere is an oasis of fantastic food and excellent employees. And that oasis is Jalsa. We traveled a bit to get there for a surprise birthday celebration, and we were pleasantly surprised at how nice the evening wrapped up. There was not a lot of foot traffic but there was a ton of takeout happening while we waited for the table as well as general waiter service. However, we were not going anywhere so this is a-okay. We were amongst friends so having additional wait time was okay in our books. The main courses were delicious, there's something for everyone. The place had ample lighting, you wouldn't have known compared to how the neighborhood is oddly enough. The only thing I would recommend in improving is the mango lassi. It weirdly reminded us of the Creamsicle bars we enjoyed as kids. Now, it's not to say that it's not a yummy flavor but we were hoping to taste mango and not orange...? Lives up to the hype! So glad we came here tonight. We recommend the palak chaat as a starter for the group. They really prepare the individual spinach leaves, so it takes a while. Worth the wait! It's like a delicious crispy salad that's somewhere between fresh and fried. It can be vegan on request. The dahi puri is also great. You can probably split that between two people, so each person gets one piece. Pop it whole into your mouth and enjoy the flavor explosion! For mains, we like the daal with rice (rice is $3 extra). It's mild, but they have a spicy coriander sauce if you're looking for more flavor. Caution: the yellow rice is not vegetarian. Amazing veggie samosas. Chicken tikka masala had a very strong charred/burnt flavor without as much of the tikka masala sauce flavoring. The chicken biryanis was good but nothing remarkable. read more
