Deluxe thali

Not the best South Indian food in the world but for this South Indian person - it will do! The deluxe thali reminds me of food I'd get in a canteen back home. I'm grateful for this place!

Special Rice of the Day

Having seen this cart at Old Slip for the longest time, I finally decided to give it a shot. I heard rave reviews from some co-workers in the past and they all informed me of its popularity back home in India. I went for the Business Lunch, which runs for a cool $9.99. It's actually the perfect item to order if you intend on using your credit card to pay as they allow for credit cards to be used for purchases that are $10 or above. The Business Lunch consisted of the special rice of the day, 1 piece of Chapathi, Veggie Kurma and the Vegetable of the Day. Although the order didn't look huge, it was quite filling. The rice was excellent and there were a few curries included, which I gladly doused the rice and Chipathi with. Unfortunately, there was some bitter, some spicy and some sweet so mixing everything together didn't result in the best experience. In addition, there was a small dessert included too, which was my favorite item inside. For the price, I would have preferred a little more rice, but it was a nice variety overall.

The guy picked up the phone but hung up as soon as I asked for the takeout. Very rude, at least be courteous and reply.

Hands down one of my favorite meals I've had in NYC! I'd had Third Kingdom on my list for a long…read moretime and learned they unfortunately closed and this place was one of their sister places that had a similar mushroom menu so we had dinner here. For a party if 4 they recommend you order 6-8 dishes to share so that's what we did. We got the artichoke toast, cremini flatbread, risotto, cauliflower and then ordered three items off their "understory" mushroom menu: blue oyster mushroom, hen of the woods and then the emolada. The risotto and blue oyster stole the show for me. The flatbread and toast were also phenomenal. I love mushrooms and the unique way these are prepared and served is just wonderful! I'm so glad I could try it! The inside is like stepping into a fairytale woodland area too. Love the east village too so the area is great and gets lively at night! Our service was so helpful and friendly. So would def recommend.

I had been looking forward to trying Avant Garden for a long time and chose it for a birthday…read moredinner, so this was especially disappointing. We had a 9:30 reservation on May 9. The reservation email said they would hold the table for 15 minutes, and we arrived at about 9:43 after getting stuck in traffic. We were still within that window, but as soon as we checked in, the host immediately told us the kitchen was closing in one minute and that the bar would close in about 20 minutes, so we needed to place our food order right away. It made the meal feel rushed from the moment we arrived. The restaurant was virtually empty, but we were seated directly next to the bathroom. There were clearly plenty of other seating options available, which made that choice even more frustrating. Unfortunately, there was a noticeable bathroom odor from our table, which was really unpleasant and not what I would expect from a restaurant at this price point. Servers were also constantly going back and forth between the dining room and what seemed to be either a storage or cleaning area near the bathroom, so in addition to the odor, there was steady foot traffic throughout the meal. There were also papers or sugar packets underneath the table next to us, which added to the feeling that the dining room was not being carefully maintained. We ordered the paella, fig toast, and Calabrian flatbread. The food itself was fine in terms of flavor, but the rest of the experience made it feel understated and much less enjoyable than it should have been. The paella and toast came out quickly, and then we waited about 45 minutes for the flatbread. During that time, no one checked in, explained the delay, or asked how anything was. We honestly thought the flatbread had been forgotten. Then, after that long wait, the flatbread and dessert were brought out almost at the same time. The server explained that the kitchen was telling them to bring everything out at once. We had also ordered a bottle of Lambrusco, but it was not available, so we were given a different wine instead. Overall, the pacing and service felt very disorganized. We were rushed to order immediately, then largely ignored for the rest of the meal. No one asked how the food was, no one checked on the delay, and the timing of the final dishes made the meal feel chaotic rather than enjoyable. Even though the food was fine, the experience around it really took away from the meal. I also think there is a practical issue with the reservation timing. If the kitchen closes 15 minutes after the last available reservation, it does not make sense to offer a 15-minute grace period. Either the final seating should be earlier, or the kitchen should remain open long enough to properly serve guests who arrive within the stated reservation window. For a restaurant with Avant Garden's reputation and price point, I expected a much more thoughtful and polished experience. I wanted this to be a special birthday dinner, but we left feeling disappointed. I don't feel eager to return, and based on this visit, I would have a hard time recommending it to vegan friends.

This is a new trend to try and get (maybe trick) people into eating something they normally would not eat, but make it into something they normally would. Case in point here. Yes, the food here is good. I did like it. I had the Mei Fun Noodles with a "chicken". Given this is a vegan Chinese restaurant, this is not a meaty chicken. No bird here, no. It is a soy synthetic made to resemble and taste as such, like a chicken nugget appearance and in taste. The noodles are fine because it is a rice noodle, and that I had no issue with. The chicken after a while had me second guessing everything I did in life up to that point, and not in a good way. I would also like to point out a small fly flew into my bowl, but I think I was able to flick it out/kill it before I could get someone to complain about it. Either way, gross. I also had their Chili Wontons. Boy are these HOT! Tasty, but they pack tons of heat. They also have this weird synthetic taste to it that somehow confused my brain. I liked the taste, but something felt a bit off about the rest of it. The idea of a kosher Chinese restaurant is something I adore. But making it vegan as well threw me for a loop. That made it hard for me to feel satisfied. Perhaps I should just stick with the real thing from now on.

If you didn't know, this is a Mexican restaurant with a full vegan menu. We shared a plate of plantain that came on a delicious later of black bean puree. We also got chips and mango salsa ... That's really a great salsa! For the main course, I decided to get the pescado and al pastor chicken tacos. I have never had the al pastor profile with 'chicken' before, so that was interesting. I enjoyed both tacos, and I think the al pastor was my favorite. I got the churros for the dessert, and the presentation was so cool, but I have to admit I did not love them. They tasted way too fried, if that makes sense. My sister got the chocolate chili tart ... It had stunning presentation, and ... It really was delicious! That would be my first choice next time. This place does brunch and has great cocktails as well. They are more on the expensive side and I would reserve them for special occasions, but I overall enjoyed everything. Highly recommend!
