Had a few simple things there over the past few weeks: chana and rice/peppers, bhel puri, Limca (Yes they have it in the cooler and Thumbs up as well!) and it was a solid, tasty, and inexpensive lunch. Raj's is a clean, crowded, and incredibly friendly place. I will 100% be going back to try all their menu options. Home-cooking style in a classic canteen setting with lots of regulars from the vast office canyons surrounding it. A hidden cheap gem in the Fidi area. Yelp said it opened at 11, but unfortunately when we got there they asked us to come back in 30 minutes. The place for a weekend gets crowded quickly, with only one table open when we came back the second time. The food was tasty and the portions were good. The chicken samoas were delicious. The lamb curry was pretty dry to be honest, I wasnt the biggest fan. The butter chicken however was actually very good, much better than most places Ive had in the city and reminds me a lot of my favorite one from Houston. It was tender, juicy, and sweet! Really good lunch combo value for $12. Tried their combo #4 for lunch after reading reviews. (Note that their combo 4 says goat or fish, but a chicken dish is also an option. This place also treats tofu as a vegetable, which is nice.) Ended up getting: -Chicken Tikka Masala -Chili Tofu -Vegetable Korma -Naan -Small apple Good flavors overall, especially on the chili tofu. The flavors/spice on everything else were maybe a little muted. The bread was a little over done, but can't complain. They didn't overstuff the container with rice like other places. They were nice and even put sauce on their own on top of the rice. The meal also came with a really small apple. I think they'd be fine to lose the fruit if they had to do any cost-cutting. It's a humble looking place however the hospitality and the food is fit for a Queen. Raj calls EVERYONE "boss " and treats them as such. Proportions are adequate and tasty. They offer sauces and dishes for you to try. It's not in my normal everyday route but it was a delight to go there by happenstance. read more

I caught this place as it was closing. It is buffet style where you walk in and select your meats and comes with standard naan and rice . I got what I initially thought was chicken sagg and the chicken tikka . The food along with a drink was a smidge over ten dollars. A heck of a deal I thought at first especially when the place is rated so highly on Yelp this far. The disappointment came in at first bite . The rice was old ish . Gobbling up a spoon of the sagg I realized it was infact ,tofu instead of chicken . A small let down and I felt the guy at the counter could've pointed that out at ordering time . The bigger letdown however was the texture of the sagg . It could've been a little thicker in consistency . Flavor wise it just wasn't there either after comparing it against some of my favorite Indian spots . The worst thing was yet to come though . Dry and unappetizing is Howie describe the chicken tikka . The chicken was either over cooked or sitting out for a very long time . This was the worst I've ever had. I almost threw away my food right then and there . Just as I was about to stand up and slam dunk the food into the bin , the guy at the counter asked me ,"how was the food.". Not wanting to cause a stir , I said it was good and placed the food in my backpack. As I got around the corner to the nearest bin it was dispatched. The best part of my meal was my free soda unfortunately . I reserved a "Magic Bag" on Too Good To Go (an app where restaurants, groceries, bakeries, etc. option surprise bags of leftovers at the end of the day for cheap) from Raj's and was pleasantly surprised! As far as Indian food goes, I love it, but being Indian myself, I am rather picky. As the concept of a surprise bag may suggest, I didn't know the contents of the warm brown paper bag I'd received until it occurred to me I ought to open it and peek as I sat on the train on my way home. The entree: saag paneer with rice. (To be fair, I knew about the rice, as the cashier had asked me if I would want some.) Upon discovery, I will be honest with y'all, I was disappointed. I like spinach, but my palette has been known to process unfamiliar thick liquids in unpredictable ways, and I am not the biggest fan of paneer. My Indian restaurant go-tos usually stick to the safe range of chicken tikka masala/curry to vegetable korma, aloo gobi, or channa masala (all with a note: "extra spicy"). Still, I tried not to think too much about this dish's resemblance to pesto, told myself it could be a good thing, as I rather like pesto, and prepared myself by stopping to buy Thai chilis on the way home to consume with the saag. I reheated some of the saag paneer with the rice, mixing them together, and I mostly ate around the paneer, and it was actually... Good. I did not think I would like it, but I dished out some more for myself and finished that, too, alternating bites between the food and the Thai chilis. (The whole container of saag has about two servings.) TLDR: Saag paneer was actually good! This food was BOMB. And AFFORDABLE. As a vegan/vegetarian, it's not always easy to find good food options that aren't just some disappointing salad at SweetGreen or Chop't. But the food at Raj's Indian was delicious and did not disappoint. I got their Corn Rice, Chana Masala, and Ghobi Manchurian (also spelled "gobi" according to google). The corn rice and Chana masala were fine-- nothing super special about them. The included naan was yummy. But the Ghobi Manchurian?? Basically the flavors of General Tso's Chicken but with pieces of battered & fried cauliflower. Delicious and tender with a crunchy exterior, this dish was tastier than vegan versions of General Tso's chicken that I've had. Not sure if they will serve this everyday, but if it's there, you MUST try it. The worker carefully placed all of my requested dishes into a plastic bento box and it all came out to only $8.50!! I walked past Raj's Indian Kitchen around dinnertime to see the whole dining room full of life, laughter and good food. The next time I walked past, I knew I had to try it out - and it was amazing as it looked! I ordered a Saag Paneer ($12.95) since that's my go-to and it was everything I wanted it to be. It was cooked fresh, we waited about 10-15 mins after ordering in person, with a generous portion of saag paneer and rice. It lasted me 2.5 meals to be honest. The only thing I have to say was the menu was a bit confusing, I didn't actually see saag paneer on their menu in the window but online it looks like they have all the fixings (Butter Chicken, Tikka Masala, Saag, Lamb Biryani, Chicken Biryani, etc.) so it looks like this is the FiDi branch and they also have locations in Long Island City and/or Queens. When you enter, there are a few tables, and there's a short line up to get to the steam table where the dishes are served. There are always several vegetable and meat options. My go to is saag paneer, lamb curry, rice, and it comes with a crisp and not overly buttery naan. Sometimes he'll throw in a little sweetness like today was a small sauce container of rice pudding that was actually really good. Besides the steam table they also make food to order. I missed the Indian food prior to this owner taken over, the previous owner the Indian food was very good and that was Indian food. This is my second try of this place and I was underwhelmed. I forgot what I ordered the first time and I just had one taste of what I gotten and I had to throw it out. I just had the naan that is really a naan. This time I got the chicken bryani rice and first taste it was very odd and the smell was not what I used to be. I tried to take a second bite of the rice and it was overpowering with something I can't describe and it is not what it is. I had to throw it away. What a waste!! Well I tried and two times of ordering my usual favorite Indian food and it was not good. I wished I could try again but I can't be throwing hard earned money out again.
