A cute shop with a few tables and chairs in a pretty popular area. It's pretty much self service where you order from a kiosk. I had high hopes for this place but the mochi donut was too dense and doughy and any flavors with sugar coating glaze on top was just way too much. I'm not sure if it's because we came in on the late side (7pm) but not right when they were closing, which cause the donuts to not taste so fresh? I've tried a lot of mochi donuts and the texture is supposed to be light and chewy. This was definitely not it. The flavoring also tasted very artificial. We had the black sesame, banana and the pistachio, all 3 had a thick glaze of sugar on top. None really tasted like the flavor as advertise except the banana due to having banana chips as garnish. read more

Donut Chew remains to be my go-to boba spot in Rio. Not only do they have decent boba, they also have delicious mochi doughnuts and other drinks. I really enjoy the hot chocolate here - it's rich and creamy. One item to mention is that they have great matcha - both hot and cold. Recently, a couple friends and I tried a new drink they had, a strawberry matcha latte. I was blown away at how good it was! The cute decor makes it a nice spot to sit and enjoy your drink/snack. There are times when it's full, but other times you'll find a spot to sit. Finally, I really appreciate the customer service here. Hey friends! I'm back with another sweet treat review. Donuts are definitely in my top 3 sweet treats. We ordered the half-dozen donuts($18). I ordered the plain donut, churro donut and Oreo donut. My boyfriend ordered the pistachio raspberry, strawberry milk, Cinnamon Toast Crunch. They have an array of unique flavors. These are the second best donuts I ever had! The texture is very light and airy. They're also the perfect amount of sweet. You can tell the donuts are baked fresh daily. Ambiance is cute and inviting. There a few tables inside to sit down at. Customers place orders via the kiosk and orders come out within 10 minutes. Staff was friendly. There's limited street parking out front and plenty free garage parking. First time for both of us trying mochi donuts and I must say it was hard not to stop by on the way back and get more. Fresh, light and delicious! My pineapple slush was easily as good as Kung Fu Tea, and he said his strawberry matcha was amazing. Store was clean and welcoming, employees friendly and efficient, and it just *felt* like a place I want to return to--although now that I've tried the donuts and slush it's not just a feel, it's a reality. The decor is this beautiful pale pink, decorated with pink chairs and accentuated with a lovely indoor flower garden. This location had a mixture of people, late night people hanging out, young women seeking sweet treat and a table of older gentlemen discussing politics. Considering this location is in a "town center" it makes perfect sense that this has the city late night vibe. The Oreo donut was pretty good. The Oreo croffle was decent but could've been way better if the waffle was warm instead of cool/room temperature. Banana nutella is better than the matcha chocolate, which is better than the strawberry fresh cream. The croffles are crispy/crunchy on the outside and soft/flaky on the inside. So good! Even with the various toppings that get added to them, the croffles aren't that sweet surprisingly. These are definitely deadly! I also tried the Strawberry matcha milk tea with boba, which was a big no no. You could taste hints of strawberry milk tea but no matcha at all. Boba was undercooked and hard. Thinking maybe I ordered the wrong one, I also tried some of the strawberry milk tea with boba and strawberry fresh tea with boba. Again the strawberry milk tea was watered down and barely had any strawberry flavoring. The strawberry fresh tea was the best out of the three, but still a no go. Both had undercooked boba. They even have slushies and various types of bubble teas. My first time in here, I had a meet up date with one of my favorite gal pal. A true friend indeed who drove far to see me. 12.22.22 My friend and I stopped in around 11:30 on. Wednesday. The interior is so pretty and feminine with flowers adorning the pink walls. Aside from mochi donuts and boba teas, they also sell croffles and coffee. We ordered half a dozen donuts and I ordered a taro milk tea. Our server informed us that the regular boba would not be ready for another hour. He suggested the crystal boba and informed me that it wasn't very sweet, which is why he liked it. The texture wasn't the same so I would prefer to stick with the regular. (Sorry I forgot to take a pic.) The plastic cups are flimsy and I accidentally dropped the cup and it splattered all over my wool coat, new leather handbag, and Ugg boots. Of course, they are all items that you can't machine wash. I tried a few of the croffles from here and they're pretty unique! Out of the strawberry, banana Nutella, chocolate, crème brûlée, and Oreo croffles, my favorite is the strawberry. The whipped cream is lighter compared to the other croffle toppings and the slight tartness of the strawberries helps balance out the overall sweetness. The croffle itself is crispy and delicious! The chocolate, banana Nutella, and Oreo croffles are good, but a little to heavy and sweet for me. Donut Chew is a franchise that was started in Virginia, and this particular store is located at the Rio Complex 8n Gaithersburg, MD. The shop is tastefully decorated with wreaths of roses and lemonade colors. The various mochi donut favors (with pictures) are prominently displayed. I chose the churro-flavored donut and it was delicious. It has a pleasant chew, but not as much as traditional mochi. I'm rarely in the area so I didn't know this place existed until I pulled up. I originally came for another store but decided to try them as well. This shop is SO pretty. That's what immediately drew my attention. It's pretty in pink. There were a lot of donut flavors to choose from but I chose the red velvet because you can't really go wrong with red velvet. My daughter chose the fruity pebbles donut. The taste was good but since she didn't eat it right away, the cereal was stale by the time she did. Personally, I hadn't had a mochi donut before so my mind couldn't even comprehend what was happening upon my first bite. It was so soft and chewy. It was easily one of the best donuts I've ever had. I think my niece still has some weird taste buds from covid and says they both just tasted sweet to her. They've got a bunch of mochi donut flavors. They've got croffles too. And they had macarons in the case at the front counter. A handful of tables indoors for seating. The seats against the wall have the flowers and mirrors. First time walking in here Sunday evening and you get introduced with a STRONG smell of brunt fry oil. After I put my order in through the kiosk one of the employees (there was only two guys working) immediately went to the bathroom. They both were just sitting down chatting. Heard them talking about just wanting to clock out even though there were two full tables already sitting inside. Dudes didn't even read my order requests properly. The smell of burnt oil STUCK to our clothes and it reeked. At least one of the guys tried to do his job but I'll likely not come back. Drinks were meh. No service at all but interior decor was nice. Got to check out the new DonutChew next to Fantasticks in Rio yesterday! We hadn't been to the one in Annandale before, and this was my first time trying a croffle! We didn't get a mochi donut but they had some pretty interesting flavors, maybe next time! Honeydew Fruit Tea: I'm a big sucker for honeydew drinks. The honeydew flavor was on point although kind of wish I could have reduced the sweetness level because this was pretty darn sweet. But that might have translated to a not-as-strong of a honeydew flavor because I noticed they had their flavors lined up in syrup canisters behind the counter. I also wasn't given a size option so I guess what you order is what you are getting. Strawberry Cream Croffle: I'd seen some earlier reviews saying that some of the other flavors weren't the best, but those who tried the strawberry cream seemed to like it so decided to give it a try. I was really surprised at how CRISPY the croffle came out to be! Granted we ate it in store and pretty much when it came out, but after cutting through it several times and while eating, I didn't notice the texture get much soggier from the cream or fresh strawberries on top. I liked that the cream also wasn't too sweet. Besides mochi donuts, croffles, and teas, they also had a display or macaroons with interesting flavors. The drink also could've had a bit more sweetness, tasted more like jasmine tea than milk tea but still there was something a bit off about the tea itself.
