I LOVED my food here. It's a tiny place to tucked off Pine Ave so it's easy to miss but you shouldn't. There's a cute older lady there that was behind the counter she didn't rush me and was very kind. I got the katsu curry udon noodles and let me telllll you. Whoa. Wow! I was pleasantly surprised when I traipsed down Pine Avenue and popped into Donburi Cafe. The location is somewhat strange being kind of a 'dead end' in an older mall setup on Pine. I had dined at a neighboring restaurant that unfortunately closed so I popped into Donburi. Only one person was seated outside at the time; upon questioning him - he said it was good. The place is amazingly clean and organized. Without a ton of staff, they obviously want diners to take on some responsibility for bussing their trays back to the main counter and NOT being wasteful with utensils, napkins, etc. I like that. I ordered the Spicy Chicken Don albeit I'm not a huge chicken fan but it was getting close to my bedtime. First, the portion seemed quite generous so I took some home albeit I could have finished it off. Second, the miso soup was really delicious. I forgot how good it could be. Third, finally, the chicken don was quite good although I think more Korean than Japanese, which is fine. I like both and I appreciated the white rice. By the time I left, several other folks had popped in and a few takeout orders had gone out the door. I wouldn't mind if they offered a mini portion for about $10 for less hungry times. Even smaller than I had imagined, with apparently all of their outside tables stacked indoors for some reason. One really realizes that missing the Japanese brown curry, the taste of the katsu isn't great. This one had a thick breading, causing the inside to be a bit gummy. Stumbled upon this place, tucked away in downtown LB. I was looking for some ramen and there was a sign out by the sidewalk with pictures of ramen and other food items. I think she was the owner because she gave us a "first time" discount when we paid. The food was ready in a timely manner and placed on the counter for pick up. You take your food on a tray back to your table. I actually liked busing my own table (they have a sign that says please bus your own table). There was music playing and the ambiance was calm and encouraged us to take our time enjoying the meal. I ordered ramen and had asked for spicy but ended up being okay with being served mild broth. The flavors were delicious. The gyoza was filling as an appetizer but were served very hot and stayed warm while I enjoyed the other parts of my meal. The beef bulgogi was very filling and tasty. Coupled well with a Saparro drink. Enjoyed our meal and the experience in the restaurant, even though we were the only patrons. Service: the ladies were very friendly and my order came out very quick and everything was nice and hot. I decided to eat in since there weren't a lot of people yet. There were multiple signs that read, "please bus your own table" with arrows. Kind of a strange concept since they still need to carry everything in off the counter. Idk...maybe I participate wrong. It's more of a Japanese style joint where you order first but pick up at the counter and bus your own table. I got the shrimp ebi don, Basically tempura shrimp with egg over rice. What's an anime con without anime food? Jk jk, but we did stop by here during Anime Los Angeles at the Long Beach Convention center and we're glad we did! It was only day 1 of the con but the eatery was already pretty packed with limited seating inside and outside. I'm pretty sure it got even busier as the weekend went on. There's really neat decor inside and a stamp card wall for all the regulars which I think is very neat. We got the: 1) Curry Katsu Don: -Delicious curry with pork cutlet katsu, you can never go wrong with that. -Very comfortable, home style dish for sure. -Curry was flavorful and had a good amount of carrots and potatoes in it. Not too watery and reminds me of those Vermont curry roux (not a bad thing!) 2) Katsu Don: -Unlike the sauce katsu don, this comes with egg on it. More like an oyako-don except instead of chicken cutlet, it's a pork cutlet. 3) Sauce Katsu Don: -Just a regular katsu don with a small dish of tonkatsu (bulldog sauce) on the side. -Wish they gave more sauce, but For each of these dishes the rice was cooked to perfection. Nice big, warm fluffy grains and the katsu was crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. Very flavorful and each order came with free miso soup. I think my only issue was that it too an extremely long time in between all of our party getting their food. Like 3 people got their food extremely quickly and then it took over 15 minutes for the other 3 to get their food too. Since everyone was starving, by the time the other food was there, the others had finished and we were just left to awkwardly sit there. Also someone didn't get their miso soup until they were almost finished with their food and only when everyone told him he was missing his soup. When he went back into the restaurant to get it, it was just out on the counter and cold for quite awhile. Apparently they didn't have enough time to make it and place it all at once with his order.
