The food was average at best. Nothing was bad, but nothing was great. We had the cheese dip with beef, which was pretty good, but nothing extraordinary. I ordered the 3 taco combo, which I believe was number 19. I asked for grilled chicken rather than shredded, hard shell, meat and cheese only. I received 4 soft tacos with nothing but meat in them. It also showed up with a side of rice and beans, which I just assumed came with the combo. When we received the bill, my food was 11 bucks, and entitled "carne asada taco". The combo I ordered was 6.50 or so. I assumed there would be an additional charge for grilled chicken, and even told the waiter that it was fine if there was an upcharge. But almost double the price? I don't think so. When I asked why it was different on the ticket, our waiter told me they didn't have a way to substitute the grilled chicken and instead had to change it to something more expensive and substitute the steak for chicken. I told him they should really tell someone that next time. The waiter was apologetic. The service was pretty good, our waiter answered our requests pretty quickly. The restaurant itself is nice, and has a nice patio. However $40 for 2 people with tip is a bit expensive, and I only tipped 4 bucks. I doubt we will go back. read more

We ate here last night and the food was pretty lackluster. Not terrible though. I ordered a steak fajita salad and was only a little way into it when I noticed a small black bug, wings and legs intact laying dead on my next bite! A server apologized and offered to make another but we were completely put off at that point. We asked to speak to the manager and def did not get to see him promptly. When he finally came, his only explanation was that it must have come from outside (as opposed to...? o.O). I have really never encountered a more disinterested manager. A sincere apology would go a long way when things like this occur. We won't be back and none of the food we had, pre-bug, would have been with more that three stars anyway. The night started out good. We went inside and the place was busy. We got our waitress and she told us she was very busy and we understood. We ordered our drinks which she had to make them and not the bartender. We ordered our food and it was about 30mins before we recieved it. At this point of receiving our food the resturant had emptied out and we were left by ourselves in half of the resturant. My food was very cold and what I ordered and received were completly different. We never saw our waitress after our food was delivered. My first experience will be my last unfortunately. After some time, we found out that she had passed us to another server because her shift had apparently ended. One of the better Mexican places around town. I have been more pleased with their food than anywhere else I've tried. I don't care for their margaritas, but the Long Island Ice tea was pretty good. Their tequila shots are a pretty good size compared to some other places. I like to order 'a la carte' items here and create my own meal that way. Good queso and salsa too. read more

While the food was ordinarily good and the margaritas standard, what stood out to me the most was the glass I pulled from my mouth. That's right, I did say glass, as in shards. The margarita glass itself was not chipped itself, which is more troubling indeed. The most likely cause for this was a bartender "dragging" a glass through the bin of ice. The manager did apologize and said that she would "address the matter, and dismiss the bill. We waited another ten minutes thinking that she would return to take our names or anything and she never came back. Over priced, mediocre Mexican restaurant. My 12 year old daughter ordered the nachos and got a plate of burnt nacho chips with some sort of hard, baked white cheese crusted over the top of them from being in an over a bit too long. She had to order a side of Queso cheese so she could pour it over them herself to make them actually look and taste like nachos. Complaint #1 to the waiter. And he still made us pay for the extra bowl of cheese. Strike 1. My other 12 year old daughter ordered the beef taco salad and got a soupy mix of liquid beef in a taco shell bowl. Now, we arrived in Daphne at 8:30 pm and was sitting at our table by 8:40. Funny thing is that the daughter that ordered the beef taco salad received if at the same time my other daughter got the burnt pseudo-nachos. Now the laws of physics may be different at Don Carlos, but in my house it takes about 20-25 minutes to brown, drain, and season ground beef. Not sure how they were able to pull it off in FIVE minutes, so based on the turn around time from ordering to served, it tells me that they have a vat of this mysterious liquid beef jus sitting in a pot somewhere in the kitchen. Complaint #2 to the waiter and strike 2. My daughter sent the beef soup taco bowl mystery meat back after a mere three bites of trying to force feed it to herself and thankfully, we weren't charged for this terrible dish. Long story short, don't waste your time going to this place. You'd do much better going to Taco Bell or Moe's. At least with those two, you know going in that you're ordering cheap Mexican food so you won't be let down. I gave this place two stars only because the staff was pleasant. One word: disgusting. I have no clue what it is about this place, but nothing tastes good. The tortilla chips that they put out on the table taste burnt (I suspect they haven't ever changed the oil that they fry them in), the chips they use for nachos are just weird, the chicken they use in most dishes is weirdly soft/mushy (think ground canned chicken), and the ground beef is as soft as dog food. I'd never eat here out of my own volition and always get drug here with my boyfriend. It's nasty. I've eaten one thing here that wasn't completely disgusting... the grilled chicken sandwich. Me and wife decided to try don carlos again after having a bad experience about a year ago and its apparent after this time we will not be back. Their food has No taste to it at all and was served at room temperature instead of being Hot. My wife ordered a side of guacamole and it came out in a super small bowl and when we went to pay our bill they charged us $2.75. We could not believe that because an extra side of sour cream was only .75 We then asked to speak with the manager and he claimed the price was justified because they got their avocadoes from Mexico (yeah right). Horrible!!!!! I have eaten here several times and always had average service and food. On those several occassions the food was just okay never great, but bearable with splashes of decency. But tonight was one for the records. The food was horrible, cold and tough to eat. We were not offered anything different or to speak to a manager. The server said sorry and here is your check. Wife and I just had a nice meal here, we're just passing thru on the way to NOLA for a stay. We both enjoyed our combination meals, they were not quite the "generic" sort of Anywhere USA mexican place, there actually were subtle spices at work and differences in flavors from beef variations. Don't get me wrong, maybe there are other meals that are, but our quick experience is not about to label it as mexican epicurean, it's just far better than the usual fare. Very friendly waitress, Dos Equis on tap, about five generic flavors of wine, the Merlot was pronounced as "ok" by my wife. We'd go again. Wife adds. "Nice atmosphere". This is the worst restaurant in Daphne, and that's quite a feat. The food is overly salty, and the meat tasted very off. They have an identical restaurant called El Rancho and they claim to use the same recipes. They don't. El Rancho has superior food, service, freshness and ambience. I refused to pay. After speaking with other people who have eaten there, most had the same assessment...No one with any taste I have spoken to has anything good to say about theis restaurant. I have spoken to a couple of people who did like it, but mind you they are the kind of people who eat Hamburger Helper and think they are getting a goumet treat. Go next door to Mellow Mushroom if you are hungry, or hit up Los Tacos for Mexican if you crave it. Counter service Los Tacos is better in ever aspect compared to Don Carlos. And they serve crappy premixed margaritas from a machine. Foul, Foul, Foul! Oh, and the service was so bad, I waited 15 minutes to get a menu, and another 20 for water. It took that long to make such terrible fare? C'mon! They don't even try. There were 2 other patrons int he restaurant and 3 servers talking and laughing at the bar, recounting how drunk they got the night before.
