i was craving mexican, i ordered the mexican burrito with carnitas. i love supporting local businesses but i paid $22 for a bland, dry burrito and a small cheap cheese sauce :( i hate leaving poor reviews, but there was no seasoning in the carnitas, no seasoning in beans, no seasoning in the rice, the burrito was so bland and underwhelming. the carnitas were DRY, so dry :( i really wish i would've gotten the birria tacos instead....i was so disappointed :(((( $22 is so much money in this economy, i will give this restaurant another chance in the future, but i was very disappointed with this meal and then i woke up with abdominal issues which is the main reason im leaving a review now. i used to eat here regularly when i was in college and the food was PHENOMENAL, the quality has gone down drastically. :/// read more

At the intersection of Hillcrest and Airport (Southside), this unassuming restaurant is worth a try and repeat visits. While it is a small space (it can only occupy 89 people), it offers big flavors and friendly staff. The restaurant was really loud on the nights that we visited. But this just means that people are enjoying themselves and the food is delicious. Also, the portion sizes are large and the prices are reasonable. read more

this restaurant is a whole story by itself. first of all the service is absolutely horrible. It took me almost an hour to get one drink. then once we finally got our food it was absolutely horrible. My rice with top tasted like absolute vegetables and it was not good at all. then once we finally all finished eating when we went to get our checks, we got double multiple of our checks. they give us refunds and try to say that we all got different things then we actually did. they asked us to pay for our checks multiple times that we had already paid for and added things that we didn't order to our checks. this restaurant is horrible for big groups, especially if you're not all on the same check. this restaurant is absolutely horrible. I couldn't give it 0 stars but that it was I wanted to leave. Mediocre food, order 2 flautas with avocado "salad" and refried beans. Disgusting. The salads consisted on a half cup shredded lettuce with couple of tomatoes, and something that resembled guacamole, but only the green color. I asked where was the avocado and he said that was it. The flautas meat... I found something that looked like a heart valve, so gross and he said it was just part of the meat. WTH I could not eat it. Unfortunately it was the second flauta, but go knows how what the consider beef but that looked extremely unappealing. I sent it back. I didn't even get a discount, paid and left. The food here was lovely but I was most impressed by our waiters super friendly and inviting personality. I'll come back just to see him. I had the shrimp fajitas from the lunch menu and they were lovely. My friend ordered some burrito that was the largest burrito I've ever seen in my entire existence. I mean seriously it was huge. This is a good Mexican restaurant, but nothing outstanding. It's like most of the Mexican restaurants around Mobile. We ate here for lunch and I had a chimichanga with rice and beans. It was pretty good. The rice was kinda dry and the beans were not that good. My husband ordered the lunch beef enchiladas and enjoyed it. The service was really good. No disappointment there. It's worthy of another try to see if they have anything more authentic, but I'm not sure we'll be back soon. read more

Looking for great authentic Mexican food! This is the place to try! Out on a Thursday late, hubby and I wanted something different so we tried Rios! It was late but the staff was very inviting and attentive. As soon as we were seated we were created with salsa and chips that was so fresh. My husband was even impressed at how fresh the chips were. We ordered our food and it came pretty quick and it was searing hot! It was very fresh! We wanted to order drinks but it was already late and we didn't want to hold the staff up past their close time because we had come so late. When we went it it was groups of people in there tho and the atmosphere was so inviting for it to be a smaller restaurant. Its not your typical "tex-Mex" place. No fancy architecture or themed music nor the guacamole made in front of you. Instead you will find some hard working folks just trying to give you a quality meal. The chips and salsa to start was ok and amazing (in that order). The chips were large and crunchy while the salsa was perfect! I got a vegetarian quesadilla and they could've seriously laid off the oil or whatever they used. The tortilla was soaked and the beans tasted off. The was a constant trickle of folks in and out. I think this is a solid choice on a budget. The prices couldn't be beat! read more

We came in to have a nice afternoon meal, today. I had my service animal with me. The first thing we noticed was our waitress' attitude. My partner said she didn't look happy working there. I also noticed the place was pretty empty. We ordered a guacamole, which I thought was expensive at almost $9. But the picture made it look like there was enough for at least 4 people, so I ordered it. When the guac came out, I am not kidding when I tell you that it was barely 1/2 a cup's worth. I let the server kmow that I wasn't going to pay that price for this amount and sent it back. He came back to tell me that his manager said I ordered it and had to pay for it. He mentioned the price of avocados, which are currently an all time low. Then the manager complained, saying said I didn't show him the service dog's credentials, as if I was obligated to show them without being asked! I told him they could take the guacamole off my bill, add more or we could leave. He chose we leave, so we did, and wound up at Aztecas across the street, which was packed! The service was excellent, and the guacamole was not only enough for 4, there was enough to take some home! And although he assured me it was more expensive at Aztecas, it was the same price. The manager tried to give me all kinds of excuses for this needless terrible experience. I don't even think the owners know what's going on. If they are bored and don't like working there, they might want to look at their shady business practices and how they treat their customers. All four of us at the table said we will never go back. It was late and my friend wanted to eat Mexican. So I open up Yelp and the Yelpers recommenced this restaurant. What a great restaurant. It's in a shopping plaza and doesn't look much from the outside. But the inside is modern and clean. The staff is friendly. Our waitress was not very knowledgable because it was her first week on the job so she wasn't able to answer most of our questions. The Manager came over right away and answered all of the questions. We got the Frijoles Nachos, Carnitas Street Taco and Enchilada Dinner. Everything came out hot and the portions were big. read more

It was a sad taco Tuesday here in Mobile. I looked at a few Mexican spots around and I chose it from the reviews. Yelpers ya'll done messed up this time. Whoever said homemade chips and salsa clearly has no clue what homemade looks and tastes like. The street tacos were just okay but not for $2.25 each. Only one tortilla so expect a blowout. The salsa is canned and the salsa verde was tasteless. I also ordered my tacos without onion and sadly there was a mound of onions mixed in with the cilantro. We met here with a large crowd as a last minute option when our preferred restaurant couldn't accommodate us. Rio had plenty of seating on the patio and it was a beautiful night. The margarita I had was very good, as were the chips and salsa. The service was excellent, even with our large group. My only complaint was my food was a little too cooked and the peppers and onions were too charred. The taste of the not burned parts was really good though. They have some really good looking food, and my friends definitely out-ordered me here. Rio kind of has the look of Mexican fast food, but they are definitely up scale Tex-Mex. read more

I can't seem to find a Mexican restaurant that serves street tacos. Other than the street tacos. My top 3: Fajita quesadilla dinner, Pollo Deluxe(grilled chicken, shrimp, & mushrooms topped with cheese dip), Enchiladas Rancheras dinner. I wish I could have flown to me. We have been loyal Rio diners for years. However, on our last visit, our credit card was charged the wrong amount. When I called and asked the manager about it, he acted like I was in the wrong for even asking about it. He was very rude and sarcastic to me on the phone saying, "What do you want me to do? Put the server in jail?" He never apologized for the problem and acted like I was a jerk for saying anything. Restaurants need to remember they are in the service industry, and customer service can make or break a restaurant. Unfortunately, Rio has lost a long time customer. read more

I decided to try this place by seeing the positive feedback on Yelp and I'm glad I did. The staff was friendly and fast and best of all the food was delicious, good portion size and affordable pricing. They looked quite packed when we first pulled up but we were able to go in and be seated rather quickly. I ordered the fajita quesadilla with chicken and shrimp and no tomatoes. It was very good. I even got an extra side of sour cream and it was only .50 and they had a new friend with that alone lol. Most places will charge you nearly 2 bucks for a "dollop of Daisy" lol. If you are in the area and want affordable and delicious Mexican cuisine, please give them a try and tell them I sent you. You won't get a discount but you can tell them anyway. :) read more

Sweet young couple started this place...I love it when they are there to greet you. I want to tell you to get the Chicken Street tacos add cheese....oh my!!! So good. The parking is an issue for this place. You have to be going the right way to even turn in to this location. This has always been an issue for this property. It can be crowed on nights and weekends with not a lot of space to sit and wait for your table. But if you can try it out during a little slower times - you will be please. Rio used to be a great restaurant. It used to be (I think) owned by the same people as Villa del Rey. Now that it's under new management, I won't be back. We all ordered everything together at the same time (after drink orders were delivered): 1) Mom got a margarita. $9 for a medium now... Okay. Glass comes not filled full. 2) I ordered my usual: steak fajita, replace beans, rice and tortillas with the broccoli, cauliflower mix... That's now going to cost me $1.50. I ask why it's changed and the waitress sends over the manager... new management. He shuffles over, hands in pockets... "That's how it's been since I've been here. How are we supposed to pay for the veggies?" Okay well I'm not getting the beans, the rice, or the tortillas. I get a shoulder shrug. Whatever... I order it despite the extra charge. 3) Son orders Chorizo Queso appetizer. Picture has queso and chorizo topped with cilantro, onion and tomato. It comes out with so little queso you couldn't even see it, burnt chorizo, and so much grease it covered the whole dish in a think layer... And no cilantro, onion or tomato. We wait for the waitress but our food starts coming... 4) Mom ordered a quesadilla dinner with sliced avocado. It comes out no avocado. 5) Son ordered chimichanga à la cart. First they bring him the dinner, take it back, then bring him a chimichanga with no queso on top. My dad and I are still waiting for our food. 6) Dad ordered two beef tongue tacos. Asked for a side of sour cream. They finally come out, no sour creme but the waitress quickly brings him one, 2oz cup. (Menu says $.50 extra, typical price and expected. I was charged $.75... I didn't bother arguing this.) 7) Kitchen lady brings a plate of "chicken and rice". I tell her that it isn't ours. So I'm still waiting. She returns again a little later, "chicken and rice?" No, steak fajita. Meanwhile I ask for a menu to confirm the pictures of the chorizo-queso and the chimichanga. Yep... we were looking at the right pictures when my son ordered. 8) Finally my fajitas make it out and I ask to speak with the manager about the state of the chorizo-queso and the chimichanga with no cheese. Manager makes his way over. I show him the picture of the chorito-queso on the menu and ask if it looks anything like what we got. He says "it just doesn't have the pico but you can add it." I point out the lack of cheese, the burnt chorizo and the swamp of grease. I get a shoulder shrug again. I gave it back to him and asked that it be removed from the ticket. I show him the picture of the chimichanga and asked where the queso is. "You can add it." What? Your pictures show "pico" on the chorizo-queso and queso on the chimichanga, that's what you're advertising. "And you can still get it, but you have to add it." And my $1.50 extra veggies for my fajitas: 2 cauliflower, two broccoli, 3 slices of carrot. Again, shoulder shrug. When I got the check, the manager didn't remove the chorizo-queso. The waitress I think was doing the best she could. But we weren't the only ones getting piecemeal delivery of our food and having the wrong items brought to the table, so the kitchen staff was disorganized and struggling. And the manager... less than professional. He was sitting at the bar when we first walked in. I thought he was a patron until he showed up at our table... Hands in both pockets shuffling over. After I had shown him the apparent false advertisements on the menu, when he walked away with the menu, he threw it down with quite the attitude. Not professional at all. The shredded chicken in both Mom's and my son's dish was dry. Dad enjoyed the cow tongue tacos, but know the sauce on the side is hot. My steak fajitas tasted good. Having been in food service management, I know the steak product used. The guacamole had both a weird texture and (not normal green) color and the taste was off enough I didn't eat it. It wasn't the typical "thinning" you see; usually accomplished with sour cream. I have no clue what they did to theirs. The chips were an improvement, thinner, nice crisp to them, and hot/fresh. They changed their salsa recipe. It was okay but when you put a "little" sugar in to cut the acidity, you don't add so much that you can actually taste the sugar. I was wondering why they weren't jam packed with a wait list on a Friday night... I think we found out why. I spend a little more in Gulfport at El Aguila and we drive all the way there from Mobile (at least once a month). The quality is stellar, amazing service, the owner is literally "friends" with his customers, and I know what I'm getting and it's consistently high quality and amazingly delicious. Rio cutting corners, advertising one thing that makes the customer have to ask for something "extra" to get what was advertised, with "gotcha" surprises on the ticket, served with a side of unprofessional manager is not how you win return customers. read more

This is the best food I've ever tasted it has nice employees and really good food and I got the cheese dip and stake and burrito and it had really clean cups and they were good sodas and my waitress was one of the nicest employees ever and I would recommend coming here. It really upsets me to have to give this place a 2 star review. The two stars is for the food and not the service. Tonight the place was run by kids. All the employees that we saw were very unprofessional, they publicly argued, they didn't know who was assigned to what tables and argued about that, a male employee kept flexing in the mirror behind the bar, all the staff sat and hung out behind the bar and didn't attend to the customers. One man walked out because no one came to his table. We were seated immediately but it took over 15 minutes for anyone to come to our table to take a drink order. This used to be our most favorite Mexican restaurant in town but we just paid $60.00 for dinner for two and we just don't feel like it is worth us returning. read more
