I haven't had La Cocina in a very long while. I don't even remember what I had. Mexican food is not one of my favorite foods but I do like it. I know ala Cocina has a pretty good reputation. I scanned the online menu and it didn't take me long to find the birria tacos. It came with two sides. I decided to try the charro beans and Spanish rice. The email I received said my wait would be about 20 minutes. I drove to the restaurant and waited in my car for a bit. When I walked in the restaurant there was someone attending to some tables. The was a sign to ring the bell to get some service but the waitress saw me. I told her that I had an online order and within a few minutes my food was ready. When I got home I noticed there was chips and salsa in my bag as well as the other items I ordered. I didn't realize my meal came with chips and salsa. I guess that's not out of the ordinary but it was a pleasant surprise. Anyway I started with the rice and then with the beans. There was nothing really special with the rice but I don't think I've had charro beans. They seem to be beans with what seemed like vienna sausage. It didn't taste bad. I really didn't know what to expect. On the to birria tacos. The definite star of the show. Being that my food was take out there was some sogginess to the taco shell but the tacos held up pretty good. I dipped the first taco in the consommé (yes, I googled it). It was very savory and the meat was tender. I don't eat a lot of authentic Mexican food but I know what good food tastes like. I definitely would recommend the birria tacos from La Cocina. read more

The beef tacos were inedible meat was like paste and had the flavor of water. Service was almost non existent with our waitress sitting in a booth on her phone. I will not be going back. But, if you do decide to go the asada street tacos were ok. read more

Anyone who doesn't find their AUTHENTIC dishes amazing, is probably used to thinking that Mexican food consists of chicken quesadillas and queso. Try it for yourself. Have not been here for years and now I know why!!! Arrived 4:30 PM so not crowded. Welcoming chips were old and stale. Ordered fresh made guacamole, lime juice was so strong that is all you could taste for $8.95. Margaritas were good. I ordered tacos....very big and loaded but the ground beef had no taste. Wife had steak fajitas, about 1/3 of items in steaming iron skillet were burnt which also ruined taste of it. Server was younger girl who was mainly interested in talking to her other waitress friend, not good service. After complaining about everything they took $10 off check. I've been here a couple of times in the past and food is decent. I ordered the fajitas la cocina nachos. I checked food before I left. I asked young lady where is the cheese and they gave me a story about cheese is at the bottom. In my opinion it didn't look like an ounce of cheese even existed. I took their word, come to find out no cheese and nacho were horrible. This is based on my encounter this location has fallen off. I even notice that it was during lunch hours and they weren't even crowded like I remembered. This was a waste of money, nothing but a whole bunch of meat with a few vegetables( some were burnt) and three pieces of chips at the bottom soaked from the grease from the meat. I went here with my manager for lunch and when we got there no one was there to sit us. We waited for a few mins to get seated and to place our order. We both ordered street tacos with rice & beans. Today, my family and I had lunch at La Cocina, which turned out to be the worst dining experience we've ever had. For nearly 30 years, we've been loyal customers, but we've decided never to return after what happened today. Our meals were served with spoiled crema/sour cream, which they refused to acknowledge, despite it tasting and smelling like blue cheese--a cheese they don't even offer. Rather than remaking our meals or removing them from our bill, they chose to dispute our claims and demanded full payment for the spoiled food because we had consumed a portion of it. Maria L. insisted on us paying $20, a sum that cost them a long-standing customer and earned this negative review. We wished for a different outcome, but their appalling customer service and refusal to take responsibility have led us to sever ties with this establishment as of today, 8/9/2024. read more

First timer here. The customer service is friendly. I had the burrito Jalisco with shredded beef and it was good. It was about $8. Worth every penny! This isn't the Mexican food I am used to but La Cocina is good. I'll definitely come back the next I'm in town. read more

I finally decided to stop and try this little spot. I used to work in the area and lunch time was crowded so I just took them off my list until today. The place is small, parking is limited but the customer service is wonderful and the price is right. The price is comparable to most authentic Mexican restaurants in the area so let's get to the food. I chose the Street Tacos platter $12!for three tacos with rice and beans and chips and salsa. Great deal!! Once I ordered the hostess told me it would be about 10 minutes. It's a small place about 12 tables and several parties where leaving when I arrived so It wasn't crowded. The chips and salsa were great. Chips didn't taste or look like they were from a bag so I really enjoyed it. All of the tacos were delicious. I got them togo but the weather was bad so I decided not to wait. It was plenty of food and they didn't hold back on the servings size in each taco. The rice and beans were tasty. All in all it was good. It wasn't anything that especially stood out to WOW me but I enjoyed it. It's a great location with fantastic service and good food. Small building that usually requires a wait. Not many places to wait but they have added a few benches outside the door to do so. Food is fast- Service friendly - decor - lacking. Folks like their Authentic side of the menu but I have yet to order from that side - I usually get items off the a la cart section. Welp I don't expect every place to make tacos like my beloved California but although very meaty the tacos asada which is beef and the tacos al pastor which is pork had no flavor whatsoever. The margarita was sugary sweet and lacking. The tacos will run you $2.99 a piece. I hardly ever use salt but today it is front place on my table.. The service is lacking. I literally sat here and there was only one other couple in this establishment and they were having a nice talk before they decided to look over and address me although they seen me walk in. La Cocina is the best Mexican restaurant in Mobile! I tried all the others first, because La Cocina doesn't look like much from the outside. To me, all the others were very cookie-cutter Mexican restaurants. . .or worse! La Cocina, though, is head and shoulders above all these others. Their food tastes fresher; their flavors are more vibrant; and their waiters and waitresses are nicer. I've never ever had a bad experience at La Cocina. I've tried so many of their main dishes, and they all are amazing. Their chile rellenos are very good, and I ALWAYS get the same two sides: picadillo de chorizo and nopales. The first of these is a delicious mixture of potatoes and chorizo, whereas the latter is a cactus salad. I love, love, love it! read more

My son and I stopped in here one evening last week because my son was craving Mexican and I'd have to say- we'll be going back. It wasn't the quickest, but the food was great and there was a ton of it! We took leftovers home and the meal actually became two meals! They have an awesome "build your own" combo plate option that was super affordable at I think $9.99 a plate or so. Again- we will definitely visit this location more in the future and I recommend it to everyone. You can't beat the price for the quality and amount of food. Amigo!!! This place is muy bien! Luckily- I work nearby and can often enjoy this goodness! The place is pretty small inside but put together well. The servers are always nice and friendly and the service is quick. They have lunch menus and regular menus. Good prices on both. They start you off with chips and salsa.. Which is great for those days that you stroll in for a late lunch and are super hungry. The chips and salsa are good. BUT-- if you like it spicy.. like me.. ask for the hotter salsa. This was a game changer for me! I polished off that basket of chips like it was nothing and all but licked that bowl of hot salsa clean! When I go for Mexican.. I usually have a very detailed plan in mind for what I want and it usually consists of a spicy burrito of sorts with al pastor and always have them add fresh onions and jalapenos. I ordered the 8" Tapatio Burrito this time. The burritos come in 3 size options. I learned from my first visit that the small one is plenty big enough for me(and I am a pretty big guy). Now- the al pastor is a little different than what I am used to- instead of being shaved from a spit- this comes in chunks. But the chunks of pork goodness are super tender and flavored very well. The icing on the cake....er... The topping on the burrito, much to my delight, was that same spicy salsa that I had just had with my chips! Jackpot! I inhaled this thing. It was pretty dang tasty. Yo- for sure there are going to be some variances in what you get vs being truly authentic. Like the chunks of al pastor vs the shaved pieces- but we are in Southern Alabama.. not Mexico. Fancy white tablecloths and snooty matradees are fine if that's what you're into, but dives are more our kind of place. This is exactly the kind of little restaurant we've been looking for to satisfy our more rustic Mexican food cravings, specifically mole. My husband loves mole sauce, and it's not easy to find. I usually taste his but I never order it myself. We gave this place a try after seeing it on the menu. My son and I ordered off the authentic menu. I ordered Pollo Rostisado (rotisserie chicken) and the waiter suggested I add mole to it, so I went for it. This will be my "usual" dish every time we go, which will be often. The hubs ordered chicken enchiladas and had them top it with mole rather than the usual sauce. Spencer had tacos al pastor (I think) and Stan had some sort of shrimp dish, as always. We knew after we quickly scarfed down the guacamole fresco and licked the plate clean that we would be happy with our entrees, and we certainly were. After dinner, we unanimously agreed that this was our new favorite Mexican restaurant. Fantastic food, super reasonable prices and fantastic service will definitely keep us coming back! read more

Love this place! When we are sick, I always order the Chicken soup. It is the tiniest bit spicy, has chicken, rice, pico de gallo, avocados and who know what else but it's delicious! Also, the sopes are under the authentic menu and they are my favorite thing ever. They have a sort of thick corn tortilla type base, spread with beans, your pick of meat, lettuce, tomatoes, crema, cotija cheese, and white onion (which makes it, in my opinion. So delicious! Yuck. Worse Mexican food I ever had. Who makes enchiladas and does not get beans on the side, especially when you ask for them? We had the seafood enchiladas which are not good at all. I recommend getting the beef or chicken entrees instead. We had to wait forever and I got a salad with my rice instead of the beans I asked for. Took forever to get our food. My husband got mad because he watched everyone who arrived, was seTed, and ordered after us. Tiny place but don't let the size fool you it's excellent and worth the wait if there is a line. Servers are hopping all over and serving very fast. It's not fancy on the outside but it's a pretty comfy place actually. The food: Best Mexican in Mobile imho! Authentic! Chips and dip was very good - their salsa wasn't the best ever but it was fresh and tasty. My husband had tacos and they were beautiful and he said they were delicious. I had the enchiladas verdes and was VERY pleased. I consider myself somewhat of a verdes sauce connoisseur and this was well done! Tart and tasty! Beans and rice excellent too. We finished with the sopapillas and they were fresh and hot as well. Service was quick and efficient. I'm just sorry I found this place so late on our Mobile tour. We frequented La Cocina several times; the staff has always been nice and food always fresh. For $12 you can get a street taco plate with 3 tacos, rice and beans, as well as chips and salsa. A little pricier than what I'm used to, but for Mobile that seems to be average pricing for Mexican food. The tacos are good! As well as their chicken enchiladas. This was a sad disappointment. We ordered to go food. It arrived without all the components. Rice and guacamole salad missing and the entre tasted wet and soggy.
