We've had an especially favorable experience with our new favorite server, Nancy! She took care of us all night from margaritas to getting our food in and out before a huge group ordered in! I'm honestly surprised by the 3 star rating I saw before arriving. First, the ambience is really quite cozy and we were greeted so promptly by friendly efficient staff. The salsa, queso, pico and Enchiladas Verdes were as good as any of my favorite Mexican restaurants. We will swing back by if we're on this route again. read more

Nice server Arturo but not trained to look at peoples plates to see why they had Just eaten a few bites of something and asking what the problem was. Cheese and bean dip is what we ordered and it came as cheese and beef dip. It could have been my husbands fault thinking it was cheese and bean not cheese and beef. It was ok but you could see the grease floating in it. My husband got a chicken chimichanga, he liked it. I got a beef taco and a chicken flauta and a side of refried beans. Beef taco was extremely plain and the flauta was pretty good, but I was not impressed. Lots of food was left on the table. I also ordered a top shelf margarita and it was extremely disappointing, I'm afraid they left out the float of gran mariner, making it a top shelf. My standard as a former Texas native is a bit skewed. However, someone should suggest to the chef a touch of pico de gallo can do WONDERS for plate presentation! We shared the sampler platter and it was a symphony of bland, beige food drizzled with cheese. No sour cream, guacamole, pico, jalapeños...anything with color. I love how cute this place is so I gave it 2 fair chances and was disappointed both times. Both times were exactly the same. Walked in and was not greeted (unless you count an eye roll and a "how many?"). Once seated, we waited over 10 minutes for our server to drag her feet over to our table and ask for our drink orders. After she took another 10 minutes to bring them back, she brought my boyfriend a water instead of a sweet tea. IT IS TWO OF US AND NOT ROCKET SCIENCE TO GRAB TWO DRINKS. (Also to add, the waitress only had one other table in her section and it had 3 people). We weren't given straws, napkins, and not one single refill the entire time. The upside was the salsa and queso are fabulous and my quesabirra was as well. My boyfriend got the burrito loco with steak and enjoyed his meal as well. I understand if a server is having a bad day, but with the 20 other staff members sitting around and playing with each other around the restaurant, they can pick up the slack and notice when someone is left waiting. I hope the service improves and maybe people start writing orders down instead of looking at you like they just came in from smoking a joint out in the parking lot. Food quality was the worst I have ever had at this restaurant. My nephew ordered steak authentic tacos. When they showed up the meat was ground up and full of big chunks of fat and gristle. When we asked about the meat quality they said "that's how it's served, because nobody likes slices of fresh steak". What a joke!!! Will never go back to what used to be a great place. read more

We stopped in this town to get some gas, we were headed home to Houston from our Orlando trip. We decided to grab something that was "fast food", and Don Carlos was open. It was about 9pm, they're open tell 10pm. Which is amazing. The food was pretty good, different from our Houston style Tex Mex....but we're impartial haha. the server talked to me like I was dumb. she brought out the queso before we even got chips. the queso was also brought out cold. when we asked for hot sauce she said they didn't have any, we looked to the table behind us and found some. Queso came out before our salsa asked for hot sauce and was brought a mild salsa. Food took forever to come out. The food was horrible. Chicken chimichang was full of mushy flavor less chicken. Absolute worst Mexican food I've ever eaten and expensive too! I ordered a shrimp chimichanga and the first 3 bites I took were just dark vegetables. I thought it was steak at first. I had to cut it open to find the shrimp. Normally, they are fried but this was just limp and gross. I don't understand how they are still in business! Even the rice was sticky and lumpy. Seriously the worst food ever. I can't believe this take out crap was almost $30. Huge disappointment! In most new restaurants I order the Enchiladas, Quesadillas or Chimichangas because those are hard to mess up. Well, Don Carlos messed this up. Taco Bell is even better than this. This is not good, the chips were stale the salsa was cold and the tacos were just so so.. service was not outstanding, sat at the bar but they took about 15 or 20 minutes maybe longer to get my check!! I really dig this place. We have been a handful of times and the food has always been good. They start you out with chips and salsa. I like it hot, and if you get the right server- they will make you some spicy salsa. But be warned... it'll make you sweat! I've had the fajitas and they were terrific! But for me the real star here is the Steak Alambres. First of all... bring your appetite! No skimpy servings here! The alambres comes with a side of rice and beans, tortillas, and a huge plate of meat. It really is fantastic! So much flavor! The wifey always gets the chimi and as a chimi connoisseur- she says it's pretty darn good. She also really enjoys the cheese dip here. The service can be a little spotty, but just slow. They have always been very nice and helpful. Y'all... this is one of the good spots on the Eastern Shore. This is a place you should definitely check out when looking for some good cuisine. Not sure what happened to this restaurant but it's no longer a place we will patronize. The food and service used to be great, right down to the chips and salsa. No longer, and it makes me sad. The chicken with broccoli and veggies was chicken with broccoli STEMS - not the first floret on the entire plate. The ground beef quesadilla had no cheese of any kind, just beef, and the tortilla was a regular tortilla - not crisped in any way. Just a tortilla folded over, like a soft taco only bigger. Something must have changed because the quality of ingredients, the level of cooking, and the service have all suffered. It shows, because at lunch rush at 12:30 on a Sunday found the restaurant to be about half full. Usually it's packed, with people waiting to be seated. Our server didn't speak English and we had a very difficult time trying to get him to understand what we wanted. We're all for giving people a job, but make it an appropriate position. If they don't speak the language yet, give them a position that doesn't require getting things people are paying for. Not being able to communicate is frustrating and takes away from what is supposed to be a pleasant experience. read more

Nice Mexican restaurant with a nice variety of Mexican food choices on the menu. Although not all the food is authentic to the Mexican style of cooking, the food gives you a nice mild taste of Mexican cuisine. The cheese sauce that is offered to go along with your chips and salsa is just okay. The kids enjoyed it as a dipping sauce but don't expect it to be cheesey in texture or taste. The salsa is mild and sweet which is perfect for kids and for adults that aren't interested in a spicy salsa. The chips are okay and are thicker than I prefer. I had the steak salad which is a nice rendition of a carne asada. I ordered the guacamole to go along with it and it was really quite good; I could actually taste the avocado. There is a full service bar. The margaritas are good would be better with a bit more tequila to cut the sweet taste. The service is good and attentive. The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice and has the look and feel of a nice Mexican restaurant. It is a nice place to dine inside with plenty of parking available in their private parking lot. Being a native Texan, I judge heavily on authentic Mexican food. I was somewhat disappointed with the food. My hubby had the combination A with consists of one beef taco, one enchilada with beans and rice on side. His food was warm at best. Sauce did not taste homemade. Mostly tomato sauce instead of meat sauce. My server told me the stuffed jalepeno was with cheddar cheese but actuality it's cream cheese. It too was not homemade. It was confirmed that it came from a box. Sad...since I paid $8 for frozen poppers. He was a nice server. We were sat immediately. I'm a real tamale snob. I've eaten them from coast-to-coast, sampled some of the best in both California and Texas and make a mean one myself. However, Don Carlos serves a pretty damn good tamale that fills you us and is delicious and seasoned well. The staff is very attentive and friendly and the portions are ginormous. We took a lot of extras home, but they were delicious. Our group had the large taco salad which is honestly enough to feed three people. I had the tamale with black beans and rice. Great accompaniment with a little melting of cheese on top. The chips are fresh, crisp, and light. Deep glasses with never-ending refills and a decent hit to your wallet.
