I have driven past this place hundreds of times and always intended to stop in... But didn't until a friend dragged me there. First, this is not a classy place... Kind of a dive actually. Cramped, well worn furnishings and a somewhat spacious patio with questionable tables and chairs... The perfect setting for a place that specializes in hot dogs! Love it! The menu is kind of gimmicky with dog names for the different topping combinations. Also a nice selection of burgers, sausages and side dishes... Not to mention the Rochester necessity... The plates! I had a Cincinnati Red... Red hot with their house chili and cheddar. It was served on fresh French bread which was perfect considering the generous amount of toppings... Absolutely delicious! I spent two days in Rochester and stoped by Dogtown for dinner with a friend. Dogtown is a super casual hot dog joint. They have a small patio and limited seating inside. You order at the counter and they bring your food out to you. Hot dogs are the star of the show. They have a lot of creative options or you can make your own. I went with the one that has teriyaki sauce, pineapple, and several other toppings because I've never had pineapple on a hot dog and I will put pineapple on anything. Including pizza. That's right. I also went with a side of fries with their meat sauce and a soft drink. Dogtown was solid yet unspectacular. I appreciated the creativity of the dog but didn't love the meat sauce on the fries. So a bit of a hit and a miss. They have other options beyond hot dogs if you'd like to go with a sandwich or something else. All in all, an affordable and quick meal. read more

I have yet to write a review for Dogtown which is a shame since it's obviously a classic in Rochester. They have ample parking and great outdoor space. For the short sunny day that we got today, we were able to catch some rays outside for lunch and I ordered their Polish sausage with a side of their loaded fries. My husband decided to try one of their different Speciality dogs of their Chihuahua with a side of coleslaw and Mac salad. Service was quick and they brought our food to the table outside which was nice. Love how low-key the place is but serving great food as always. I'm a vegan visiting from California and fell in love with this place. We got the split veggie plate with a hot dog and veggie burger, with sweet potato fries and baked beans, as well as gumbo. The garbage plate/dog plate/veggie plate was DELICIOUS! The baked beans were so good and it was so great to have vegan baked beans after so long. I love love love sweet potato fries so they were a perfect addition to the plate. The hot dog was pretty good plain and the veggie burger I needed to mix with the rest of the plate to enjoy. I didn't enjoy the gumbo as much but that's probably because the plate was too good to compete with. I also love the vibe of this place. When you pull in to their tiny parking lot and see the shack in front of you, you may be a little off put, I know I was the first time I stopped here on a recommendation. Don't let the size of the building, or it's exterior deter you. Dogtown has become a must-stop location for me any time I'm driving out of town. I will plan trips to syracuse accounting for time to stop here. The food is consistently amazing, and it's one of the only places I force myself to get at least one new-to-me item when I eat. Todays order is the Fido Castro and the Jindo. The Fido Castro: It wasn't bad, I'll start with, but it lacks the pizzazz or oomph of some of their other offerings. The slaw was stacked so high most of it ended up on the plate and table rather than in my mouth. The Jindo: Kimchi and bacon on a hotdog, sounds completely bizarre, but if you like kimchi, it is definitely the prominent flavor. It meshes way better than you may expect. Only weird thing here is that the kimchi was served cold, which made for an odd mouthfeel. Would be better served warm. Still going to get it again regardless. Top pick so far is the Greek Stray, makes no sense but full recommendation. Honestly, my only complaint is that they aren't closer to home, but at the same time, maybe that's what's best for my wallet. read more

Went out to Rochester and stopped here for a light lunch. The veggie chili was a must have from previous reviews and I ordered a veggie Cincinnati dog. Tasty though the chili was not as cinnamon flavored as Cincinnati style it was very good, and since t was a hot day I was glad it wasn't scalding hot chili on top. The sweet potato fries are good but topped with sugar which was new for me. Next time I would ask them to hold that. My husband enjoyed his hot dogs. The Bernese mountain dog he preferred over the meat sauce and peppers. Since I'm from Detroit I found it odd to see meat sauce without mustard and white onions, but he just didn't think the bbq sauce on top of the meat sauce was his favorite. read more

I was finally able to try Dogtown!!! Maybe more accurately, I was finally able to find a parking spot at Dogtown!! I had tried to come here a few times before, and the parking lot has always been full. Sometimes to the point that I can't even pull in. I've gone up and down the street and come back, and still no luck. There is only so much effort I'm willing to put in to find parking for take out before I'm just going home. I had to loop the block twice this time, but when I pulled in, there were 2 spots. Hooray!! It was pretty much what I expected inside. It's not very big, and there were a lot of people waiting. My order didn't take long though. Probably about 10 minutes. I have been checking the vegetarian specials they post on Thursdays for quite awhile now. They finally had the vegan chicken salad again, so I went to try that out. While I was there, I also got a veggie dog since I'd never had one of theirs before. The veggie dog was just ok. I got it plain because I don't like lots of toppings. It came on a french bread type bun. Only strange because it was not your usual hot dog bun, and it was kinda crispy. It was ok. I might try cheese on it next time. I put my own ketchup on it at home. The chicken salad was pretty good. I really like veggie chicken, and it's rare that restaurants have it, so I wanted to try theirs out. It was kinda soggy or runny or greasy-ish. It just wasn't quite what I expected. For me, it needed something. Like mayonnaise, or some other type of sauce. It was still good though, and I'd get it again. Surprisingly, the macaroni salad that I got with my sandwich was my favorite part! I'm picky with macaroni salad. I don't like it when it has a Miracle Whip taste, or a mustard taste. This was really good, not too much sauce, and I really, really liked it! Overall, I can't complain. I love how many vegetarian options they have, and that you can even do a garbage plate with veggie burgers or dogs. However, it's too much effort for me to park here, so it's not a regular spot for me. read more

Unfortunately, I went to compare reviews and pics and saw that the attached photos detailed the "special" for the day on the Dogtown FB page. It says the special was "Colombian Drug Sniffing Dog." After seeing that, I decided to go to elsewhere. Its absolutely ridiculous someone came up with that, wrote it on the board, and was like "yup! Perfect!" Had a hankering for tube steaks yesterday. Decided to give Dogtown another try. Their fare is quite decent, actually. There are a couple of annoyances that I'd like to address. 1.) There are no utensils provided. Not even plastic or plant-based utensils. I don't know about you, but some of the larger hotdog offerings leave a mess on the hands and on the serving basket. It's about 10% of the meal, actually. WIth no utensils, I was forced to eat with my hands, like our ancestors did 200 thousand years ago. But they didn't have hot dogs (or sauerkraut). Now, you can eat with your hands in the hotdog universe. No problem. But if you want to eat all that is presented, you need some way to catch and devour the tailings. 2.) the napkin selectionis skimpy. Pull-out napkin boxes difficult to use with hotdog-messed hands. Keep breaking off leaving you with half napkins or none at all. This is sad, but not to the point of tearful regrets. I really like DogTown. Really I do. I'll continue to support them, but it would be great if they showed a little more love to the messy eaters like myself. I'm seriously thinking about bringing my own utensils to some Rochester eateries. SO there you are, forewarned. If my issues don't concern you, I'm sure you'll have an enjoyable experience at the olf Arf-Arf. read more

As a self-proclaimed Garbage Plate expert, I can assuredly say that Dogtown carries one of the best plates in the city. Dogtown has consistently delivered quality, whether it's dine in or take out. The food always comes out very quickly, and the service has been great consistently. The meat sauce and the mac salad are perfect. The walls are covered in pictures of dogs, and the menu is loaded with options. Parking can be a little tricky, so just be sure to take an extra second when coming in or out. I've seen cars whip in and out of that lot, so just be careful. Consistency is key to the Garbage Plate experience. While there are many great restaurants on Monroe Avenue, Dogtown stands out as one of the best. read more

Our family of four stopped by a famous, no frills hotdog place and tried vegan dog, Italian sausage and regular dogs with various toppings. Delicious! The onion rings were phenomenal. Fries were OK. The Stewart's orange and cherry soda were good. The service was great, very friendly. I loved all the pics of dogs along the walls. It was a gorgeous night and lots of seats available on Sat at 8 pm inside and outside. The baked goods looked amazing. The buns are awesome! Dogtown def lives up to the hype! They have an outdoor patio and indoor seating. The walls inside are cutely decorated with pics of our favorite local furry friends. The food is reasonably priced and always fresh!!! I got the golden retriever- soooo good. The dog was in a toasted bun with bacon (yes- I said BACON) and cheese!!! Doesn't get better than that! I am no stranger to Dogtown and was actually surprised that I've never posted about them on Yelp. One of my favorite garbage plates in town. This time however I decided to try the split veggie plate. The veggie burger tasted significantly better then the veggie dog to my surprise, however both were above average in my opinion. I do wish they were more generous on the toppings. I added veggie chili, mustard, and onions and it came with minimal chili (although delicious) a drop of mustard and no onions. If it wasn't for that it would have been a 5 star plate. The term "Garbage Plate" is trademarked but Dogtown Hots serves some amazing "Junkyard Dog Plates" where you get choices of hotdogs, sausage, beef patties, bacon and chili over choices of home fries, onion rings, coleslaw and even macaroni! It's truly everything but the kitchen sink approach! But what's even popular and how they got their name sake, are their fantastic hotdogs where the dogs are served on french bread in a gazillion different ways. The dogs are named after variety dogs breeds such as Labodor Retriever, Irish Settler's and Burmese Mountain Dog...and I am such a sucker for dogs!! The place is small but clean and well maintained. Very good! Ordering over the phone was a breeze and the staff were friendly. Packaging for take out was neat and tidy. The flavor of the hot dogs was better than another place I tried recently. I liked that the onions were a little cooked down so they weren't so strong and overwhelming. One thing that I would change if I could is that the bread was packed with the rest of the food so it was pretty soggy by the time I got it home. Other than that, very good! read more
