"we don't allow dogs service or not" I briefed the woman on the specific tasks my dog has been trained for and provides per the ADA. Our meals were put in bags and we were aggressively ordered to leave. Several customers witnessed this, the gentleman behind us canceled his order and told the woman she was making a mistake. Finally got the opportunity to stop in and try their version of a Rochester staple food item... here it's called a Junkyard Dog plate. I went with a cheeseburger plate, 2 cheeseburgers with everything on it and for my two sides I chose home fries x2 (extra crispy). Took about ten minutes, they had a few people waiting for orders. Place is bigger than I expected, tables inside and a few outside. Lots of puppies and did photos on the wall... cute. Service was good, I took my order to go. I visited Dogtown with my boyfriend during our trip to Rochester. I got the Hawaiian Poi with an all-beef dog, while my boyfriend got the Dog Plate. Everything was delicious. My hot dog was sweet and savory and perfect. I was also particularly taken by the onion rings, which were gloriously fried. Staff were very nice, and as a Californian, the prices just about made me weep with joy. Haha. read more

My friends and I came here for a quick lunch for some garbage plates. The parking here is limited, so be prepared. It is a small place with limited seating too. We all ordered at the counter, and somehow found a place to sit for the six of us. Food: I ordered the vegetarian garbage plate with fries, mac salad, and vegan Italian sausage. I appreciate that most of the sides are vegan and they have a vegan chili to put on top. The sausage was over cooked though, which is why I dropped a star. Service: Service was quick and friendly! If you're eating there, they walk around and call your name with your plate to bring to you. TL;DR - definitely the place for garbage plates if you have a vegetarian or vegan with you! read more

I lived in Rochester for 6 years and I can't believe I missed this place while I was there. Stopped here during a recent visit and was blown away. They're allegedly one of the "Top 10 Hot Dog Joints In America," though I have not fact-checked that and I don't plan to. True or not, the food is incredible. I'm particularly impressed by their commitment to having great vegetarian and vegan options. You don't really see that at many hot dog joints. Don't worry, meat lovers: they have everything you could possibly want. But they also have everything non-meat lovers could possibly want from a place like this. And it's ALL delicious, meat and non-meat alike. It's small. Seating and parking can be difficult if it's busy. If it's nice outside, the outdoor seating has a relaxing vibe. In my experience, the staff was as friendly and accommodating as their diverse menu. There are so many great places to get food in Rochester (probably the #1 thing I miss about living there). Their combinations on their dogs are really creative , today we had Jindo and the mongrel and 3 bean vegetarian chili. Everything was on point and delicious. The food comes out fast and they bring it to your table, it's a bench table so if you don't like sitting next to a stranger eat it in your car or outside when the weather permits , just grab sone napkins , their dogs are loaded. After traveling over an hour in pursuit of this cultural staple that is a garbage plate, I found myself at nick tahou's only to realize it was closed until next week. I am from Virginia myself, so these opportunities are not frequent. I then ventured to JT's pizza and plates, just to see that they too were closed. Upon realizing the keyword for this subcategory of restaurants was "hots", I began my travel to this wonderful establishment. Walking in, there was a calming and welcoming environment. Jazz was playing in the back, and the walls were lined with pictures, rewards, and things of that nature. Huge variety on the menu, but still longing for a garbage plate, I ordered the split plate. The wait wasnt very long, and upon recieving my food I immediately knew what gave this dish its spot in regional culinary staples. The fries were fresh and crispy, the mac salad was flavorful, and the meat sauce was well seasoned. This place is fantastic. My kids told me about this place on several occasions and finally today I stopped by at lunch to try it. They have a great menu selection. It reminds me of Chicago Style dogs on steroids. I mean that respectfully because Chicago dogs are all about the toppings. At Dogtown it's all about the creativity of dogs as represented in the menu. I love Dogtown! I always make sure to come back here whenever I'm visiting. This is by far my favorite place for plates and I love that they have so many vegetarian options. My go to is the vegetarian half plate with a veggie burger, home fries, mac salad and everything on it. This time I ventured out a little and got a split plate and tried the vegetarian hotdog. I've only ever had maybe one hot dog in my life and it was when I was a kid, but from what I remember, their hotdogs were pretty convincing. Parking is kind of tricky if you're going during a busy time since the place shares parking with other businesses. This place is veryyyy busy during lunch and dinner, so expect a small wait if you go then. There are a lot of seat for how small the place is, but I honestly prefer to get mine to go since it can get cramped in there. The servers are very nice and the vibes are chill. While in Rochester, one must try the famous garbage plate, or in the case of Dogtown, a "junkyard plate"! Dogtown is known for their wide array of hot dog options, but I was super excited to try my garbage plate. Once I received my order I was not disappointed! In the most weird way, the combination of all the foods work! The macaroni salad was my favorite, followed by the crispy home fries! The meat sauce definitely has an acquired taste, and is very similar to the Cincinnati style chili. If you're into that, get the meat sauce. However, it wasn't really my cup of tea. Customer service and wait times were all great, but I have to doc one star. I noticed that one of the cooks in the kitchen had his mask down while preparing food. Under normal circumstances this wouldn't be an issue, but during covid I was shocked to see that this going on and would have felt more comfortable/safe if all staff wore their masks properly. read more

Dogtown has been mentioned several times in the WNY Vegans FaceBook group. I've had it bookmarked and was finally able to visit. Wow I'm glad I did! For a classic dog joint to be so vegan friendly is phenomenal, but this is Rochester, after all -- one of the most vegan-friendly cities around. I had to get the Plate, of course, to get the authentic Rochester experience. I chose two (of the three) vegan protein options, a dog and a burger. (I might just go back on my way home for the Italian sausage.) These were placed over home fries and baked beans, and topped with chili, mustard and onions. French bread was served on the side. I carried the chocolate brownie back to my hotel room for a perfect bedtime snack. I got there at just the right time. There was a steady steady stream of customers, but only two ahead of me, and a wave shortly after me. The staff kept up admirably, one taking phone orders, one at the register, both serving orders to folks waiting inside for takeout, dining inside, or out on the patio. Specials are posted on their social media. Sorry I missed the vegan meatball sandwich they served last week. But given how good this plate was, I'd consider driving from Buffalo just to try it. read more

The cashier gave me attitude because I asked a question about substituting sides not realizing I wanted to add one and sighed when I said id grab a pop. She then rolled her eyes at my boyfriend who'd never had a garbage plate and inquired about what the meat sauce was. It was s dead inside with only one table and no one behind us, so it's not as if we even took up more time. Take your 90's choker and shitty tye die crop top and learn customer service. Went for a hotdog because it was recommended by a local friend. Both my wife and I ordered the German Shepherd which was a white sausage with sauerkraut. While waiting to board our flight across the country a couple of hours later we both got sick. Since we didn't have anything else to eat, our consensus is that the sauerkraut was the culprit. It did taste a bit funky but who can really tell, so we ate it. Now we know that it was definitely spoiled. Our trip home was obviously horrendous. So I've lived in Rochester for over 30 years and I'm a bit embarrassed that this was my first visit to Dogtown. I actually was going to eat dinner somewhere else but was with a friend who was having a dog there -so when in Rome... Well all the hype about this place is definitely right. They make a mean hotdog and put a lot of great toppings on them. I had the Cincinnati dog which was the first one on the menu and was told it was the most popular. It has meat sauce and cheddar cheese on it and it was excellent. My friend had a Boston terrier dog with baked beans on it. Their hot dogs are very good but they're quite messy! They had some funky sodas that you could drink along with your meal. I will definitely have to stop back many times to make up for my past sins and check out much more of the menu! read more

Their veggie burger was my favorite part. It's a nice thick burger with lots of color and variety and the texture was soft and flaky. It was unique and delicious, not your run of the mill dense hockey puck type. I mixed a couple of options, I had the dog town plate with 1 hot dog, 1 veggie burger, beans, Mac salad, home fries with the veggie 'meat' sauce on top. I wasn't crazy about the seasoning on the veggie 'meat' sauce. I'm not super sure what they used unfortunately but if your a hybrid meat/veggie lover, I recommend the meat sauce. read more

For this trip we tried their weekend special, which was a fried chicken sandwich that is better than the 'chicken sandwich' on the regular menu. It was still a bit under seasoned, and the chipotle mayo didn't really come through, but the cutlet itself was juicy and crisp. A dash of hot sauce added substantially to the experience. Whenever I'm in Rochester, I try to find a new place to grab a garbage plate for lunch. I heard great things about dogTown and their plates and I totally understand why! A friend and I drove in around 1pm on a Friday for a late lunch and managed to snag one of the last parking spots in their lot. There are a fair amount of parking spaces but the lot itself fills up quick for lunch. Both of us were surprised as to how small the restaurant was inside but yet there plenty of seats at each of the long tables inside, so we weren't worried about finding a spot to eat. The sound level, with all of the people and staff inside, was comfortable with some music playing - definitely no problems carrying on a conversation with my friend across the table. There was a line of people as we walked in, but the staff behind the counter were friendly, fast, and efficient! We didn't wait long at all before we were able to place our order and find a seat at a table. Since we chose to dine-in, one of the crew brought our food out to us, which was nice. I don't think we waited 10 minutes from ordering to having our plates in front of us. For lunch, I ordered the Cheeseburger Plate off their "Junkyard Plates" menu. Their cheeseburger garbage plate is two cheeseburgers, homefries, mac salad, then topped with mustard, onions, and meat sauce. This plate was soo delicious and filling! The cheeseburgers on top were cooked perfectly and were easy to cut into and spread out into the garbage plate. The homefries were delicious and, to me, had the perfect balance between crispy and soft - precisely what I want from a garbage plate. Their mac salad was great too - creamy with the right amount of crispiness from the celery pieces and such. What distinguishes a garbage plate is the meat sauce on top. I REALLY liked dogTown's meat sauce as it had a spicy kick to it but it didn't linger in my mouth and the back of my throat - a real explosion of heat and flavor! There was plenty of onions and mustard to mix into the garbage plate contents too. Also, the slices of white bread served on the side were shockingly good, completely taking me by surprise as to how soft, pillow-y, and fresh they were. Now, I have a big appetite so I had no problems finishing my garbage plate, but I was full for the rest of the day - I didn't need or want to eat anything else until the next morning which, for the cost of my meal, is insane! I completely understand why dogTown is considered one of the best garbage plate spots in Rochester! The staff work fast and efficiently while still being friendly and courteous. The cheeseburger garbage plate from dogTown is my favorite, so far, albeit I've only had theirs and Nick Tahou's. I love dogtown! Every time I have been there (I've been there a lot), my food is delicious, hot, tasty, and exactly what I needed to satisfy my cravings. It's reasonably priced. Very cute interior (also has a lovely outdoor seating area during the summer). Oh and I almost forgot the best part! - they have great vegetarian and vegan options (at least 1/3 of the menus is devoted to vegan and vegetarian options!) I love their veggie dogs!
