A quick vegetarian lunch for me and my meat loving son inevitably leaves one of us disappointed. Not at Dogtown. With a very creative array of toppings on a tasty veggie dog (not a boiled tofu pup) a cheap eat was very satisfying. My son got a classic "garbage plate" and, as usual, the whole was greater than the sum of its parts. I've yet to be bold enough to subject myself to the veggie garbage plate but they have one, along with other veggie (and non-veggie) options. Everything you love is done right here, bonus point for home fries being crispy instead of soggy like most places, and also bonus points for mac salad that's actually good. The bread served on the side for mop-up? Great idea. It's also worth mentioning that the people working here are so friendly and also efficient. I asked a young man while waiting for our food "is this supposed to be a millennial version of Nick Tahou's?" He said "no, it spans generations." This was my first time visiting this beloved Rochester institution. If you Google best garbage plate in Rochester, these folks land first. Another interesting talking point is that they have been placed on a Top 10 list for best hot dog joint in the U.S.A. That is pretty impressive. The list of hot dog offerings is remarkable and covers a variety of cuisines. I would definitely return to try them in the future. They have their own parking lot and there is a decent amount of seating despite it being a fairly small dining area. Lining the walls are pictures of various dogs with their names which is guaranteed to make you smile. I ordered the split plate: one cheeseburger one hot dog with beans, home fries and mac salad. I almost never order beans but I felt like checking them out. I had no issue with this plate at all. Everything was great. Flavors well balanced. Dog/Burger was delicious. They threw the bread in the garbage plate container and it should be wrapped and kept separate. I actually preferred their beans to the original Tahou's. The best plate in Rochester? I think I better name my NY Trip the 5 Star Upstate experience. I seemed to have found all the GREAT spots in Rochester. And of course this was another one. We went by early in the day to get my daughter some lunch. We had already eaten Ethiopian and this was a dog place. She chose the Chili Dog, not knowing that there were some sizable chunks of cooked onion in the "Dog Sauce". She had to pass on the chili but still enjoyed the dog. This didn't deter my wife and I from coming back for a late dinner (we never really adjusted our jetlag). I ordered up the "garbage plate" with one dog and one burger patty. It was vacation so I got the Mac Salad and the Beans. I didn't do the traditional with potato, but I did enjoy my very first garbage plate from upstate New York. All the wrong things to eat, but all the right flavors to make my mouth water just thinking about it again. Dog sauce, mustard, all heaped together, it is an experience that must be had. Parking here seemed ample both of the times we came. Counter service was a bit slower than "I'm starving." So don't come here Hangry because the wait can be long even later at night. When the owners of Dogtown started, they simply wanted to recreate some regional hot dog varieties from around the country. But they didn't stop there. They now offer 18 unique varieties of hot dog toppings on a choice of dogs, nestled in French bread, along with burgers, sandwiches, vegetarian options, and the Rochester favorite - garbage plates. Their bread is locally sourced, fresh daily and hand cut, and they use regional favorite Zweigle's German Franks, longer and skinnier than other franks, they claim it's a perfect fit for their buns and toppings. They don't offer the usual Rochester hot meat sauce, but a sweeter Cincinatti style chili. I stopped into Dogtown today during a run for work. They had great Yelp reviews, so I figured I'd give them a try. The restaurant is set back from the street on a very hip main drag in the city. It's a very small place with only a couple tables inside with some outside tables as well, a divey style decor to it on the inside. I checked out their menu which definitely has a good amount of choices on it. All hot dogs are named after a breed of dog, and I went with the Pit Bull, a frank covered in their chili, BBQ sauce and peppers and onions, along with a side of sweet potato fries. There was a small line when I walked in about 11:15 AM, but it moved quickly. The employees were nice enough and brought my food over to me when it was ready. It was made pretty quickly, probably less than 10 minutes after I ordered. Relatively cheap as well, as a dog, side and can of soda came to less than $10. The sweet potato fries were very good. Crispy outside, tender inside, and sprinkled with a tiny bit of sugar to make the sweetness pop. The dog was clearly not a pick up and eat dog, so I knif and forked it, but I wasn't too impressed with it. While it's nice having the local fresh split sub rolls, they're far too big for the frank, and the bread/dog ratio just didn't work for me. The chili was ok, but too sweet for my taste, and the hot dog was just a dog to me. Nothing was bad, but with such high reviews, I expected the best hot dog I've ever had in my life, and that just wasn't the case. If you're looking for a quick, cheap lunch, this will satisfy you, and you'll have plenty of topping options to choose from. It was good enough, just missed the mark for me personally. read more

The menu names the hotdogs after breeds of dog. For my most recent visit, I had the Caribbean Wild Dog which consists of sweet Jamaican relish, onions and cheddar cheese. The flavor combination of sweet and savory marry well together. Hotdog was hot and the bun was soft. Onion rings were crispy and hot; had to let them cool for a sec. All my life I've lived in Rochester but never been to Dogtown, so tonight I decided to try it. Oh. My. GOODNESS! I've been missing out on a gem for YEARS! We walked in at 8 on a Thursday, so it was fairly busy. Our food did not take long at all considering the amount of people who were here. I usually like my hot dogs pretty plain, but I had to try some of that chili sauce. I got the Cincinnati which comes with cheese, and this DELICIOUS, thick bread as a bun. When I tell you this hot dog was bursting with flavor.....it saved my week. Actually, it saved my life. They also have all the condiments you could possibly need. My bf got the Philly cheesesteak and a golden retriever with no cheese which were also both incredible. All of this food plus a bottled water was about $15. Amazing. read more

Forget about the restaurant that has trademarked the phrase "Garbage Plate"... if you want to get the best one in town, you gotta go to Dogtown and get their "Junkyard Plate". Not only do they have a better variety of sides and toppings to go on there, they cook to hotdogs better (or cheeseburgers, or even vegetarian options if one is so inclined) and their Sauce ir Vegetarian Chili is better over the top of all the goodness. You can even get regular dogs that are served on fresh bread with crazy topping options, all named after a breed of dog, if you don't want to stuff yourself with one of their plates. Only downside is they are closed on Sundays. Any time I come to town (which is usually to stop at Record Archive) I find the time to stop off here for lunch or dinner. read more

In Rochester for 2 days, this was the only place I could find in town that did a vegetarian garbage plate. We stopped in late at night to try it out, and ended up coming back the next day for lunch because we were so impressed. This is a place where you order at the counter, and then they come out to you with your food and call your name. Very efficient. Pros: Parking lot! The veggie hot dogs were delicious on their own, and the menu lets you know which specialty hot dogs can be made vegetarian. The soups were great, definitely homemade. The bread was incredible, I could have eaten just that and been happy. Their desserts sold very quickly, we had one of the giant chocolate chip cookies, and that was one of the best cookies I have ever had. The prices are also very reasonable. Cons: It is a very small restaurant, so the seating inside is tough, but there is an outdoor patio. There are very few spaces to stand while waiting for a to-go order, so prepare to shuffle awkwardly around as you will undoubtedly be in someone's way if they're busy. read more

I really can't put into words how much I LOVE Dogtown! I feel like most people who are familiar with the Rochester food scene know about this place, but I'm always excited when I find out someone hasn't been here before because that means I get to introduce them to the greatest hot dog of their lives. I'm not being hyperbolic -- this is the BEST hot dog I have ever had. Everything about it is magical. I usually order the Golden Retriever, which is a dog smothered in cheddar with bacon underneath. The bread is listed as locally sourced on their website, and I believe I remember hearing it was from Martusciello's (correct me if I'm wrong). All of the dogs are Zweigle's, too. The bread really is the standout amount all of the amazing ingredients, though. I am a true blue carb lover and you can't go wrong with this bread -- it's a thick roll that's toasted just perfectly and tastes so good! I also order the home fries as a side because they are full of flavor and always served perfectly crispy. The seasoning is so good and sometimes I find myself craving them more than I am the actual hot dog. The fries are also a great option, but I highly recommend the home fries for a bit more flavor. Overall, Dogtown is my favorite place for affordable, delicious eats. A dog and home fries plus a drink will cost you under $10, obviously even less if you just got the dog (which is more than enough food for most people, you'll definitely leave full and satisfied). The parking lot can get a bit hectic and the seating area is small, so if you're a first-timer I recommend going during a slower time (mid-afternoon). Also, you might want to check out the menu online first because they have a ton of options, and while they have a big menu on the wall at the entrance, if you go at a busier time it might help to know what you want to order beforehand. Oh, one last thing -- this place is also vegetarian-friendly, all dogs can be replaced with a veggie dog and they have meatless entrees as well. read more

Be warned: the parking lot is small and always crowded, just like the inside (which is a bit scary these days). They're not open on Sundays. I've always had to wait when I've ordered here, but that just means it's good! One day I'll try their specialty dogs, which are named after dog breeds. Food here is great! Fantastic selections and easily customizable. You can go with a meat hotdog or a veggie dog. The place is small and is designed to briefly sit, eat and leave. Parking outside is a challenge but to be expected. However, parking and it being small aren't the reason why I give this a two star. See the attached photo. Instead of treating my friend and I just like anyone else and asking us for our names, we got called "hearing impaired." Rochester has the largest deaf community per capita so this shouldn't be happening. Customer service is vital in the restaurant industry so the service we received is not acceptable. read more

Dogtown has a variety of exotic hot dogs to choose from. Being a fan of pineapple, and never having had it with a hot dog, I chose to try the Hawaiian Poi hot dog which comes with pineapple, bacon and barbeque sauce. The dog was good (though a little messy to try to eat with all the pineapple on it) but it could have used just a little more sauce. I like the bread that they use for their buns, it's better than the boring traditional hot dog buns. The staff was friendly; parking is limited. Overall, I like what they have better than Bill Grays, Five Guys or any of the other places that I have tried in Rochester. Nothing, however, tops Fuddruckers for me when it comes to hot dogs. read more

Visits to Dogtown always hit the spot. The dog plate is one of the best in the town, and they have a great selection of dogs to satisfy everyone's wants. The food is inexpensive and the people are really warm; it's got that homey, local establishment vibe that's so welcoming. Recently I've really been craving their dog plates. With all of the same customization as you'd expect of a garbage plate, they do theirs really well. I definitely recommend getting the mac salad with yours (I don't know who doesn't get mac salad) because the coolness and bites of crunch from the vegetables are the perfect compliment to the sauce and whatever protein you top it with. You really can't go wrong with anything you choose, so you're bound to get a delicious meal. The parking lot is small, and shared by the other restaurants and businesses on the block. However there's only been one time I haven't been able to find a spot in the lot, and I went down the street and found plenty of spaces. It's near some residential streets, so parking isn't too bad. Every time I come back to Rochester, I have to drop by Dogtown to get some tasty (albeit not very healthy) grub. read more

It takes a lot of effort to explain to your friend who's just visiting. But take them to dogtown instead. I have no beef in this where has the best garbage plate fight. I just like dogtown better. So what indeed is a garbage plate? It is all the things that give you guilty pleasure, hot dogs, burgers, fried potatoes, all in one plate (or whatever combination you want, two hotdogs, three, no burger, vegan dog, whatever), topped with gravy and other sauces. Is it healthy? Questionable. Do I regret it? Sometimes. But I kept coming back. And I still bring all my friends who visit there. read more

I have recently moved to Buffalo, NY and came home to Rochester for the weekend. I've lived in Rochester for 28 years and never tried Dogtown until this weekend. Per the advice of my girlfriend, tried their cheeseburger plate and it was superb. Mac salad, home fries, two cheeseburger patties, onions, hot sauce, ketchup, and mustard. I definitely recommend trying this place. Some of the best Mac salad and home fries I've ever had. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars was because the environment was very crowded and had no AC. Given yesterday's humidity, halfway through the plate, I could only focus on wanting to get back into some air conditioning. Would recommend avoiding on hot, humid days for this reason alone. Get them to go. Food is worth the quality and price. read more

There are not many places that can pull off this type of concept, but this one does! The focus is truly on hot dogs and they are awesome. I tried the Mongrel and the Fido Castro.
