Doc's Backyard Grill is a neighborhood bar and grill located in Sunset Valley. Came here on a Sat morning for a Texas versus Ohio State watch party. They have a menu with lots of food and drink options. As well as a full bar serving up one of the largest selections of Texas beers, daily specials & plenty of signature cocktails We started off inside where there were a large number of TVs broadcasting the football game. The environment was very high energy with lots of UT fans wearing burnt orange and cheering on their team. The service was very attentive with constant checkin. We were a large party and the food and drinks came out promptly. I started with the 40 acre cocktail with Milagro Silver Tequila, peach nectar, freshly squeezed lime juice, basil and a sliced peach with a chili rim. I think they were out of draft glasses because it was served in a plastic cup so the serving size was a bit smaller than normal for the same price point. It was a very fruity and enjoyable and refreshing cocktail. For my entree, I ordered the blackened shrimp quesadillas that were recommended by an acquaintance. The quesadillas were served in a grilled flour tortilla with blackened shrimp, Monterey Jack cheese, bell peppers & onions. It was served with a side of salsa and sour cream. It was very tasty and exceeded my expectations. My only comment was that I would have preferred guacamole instead of the sour cream, but it still hit the spot. I ended up getting a $25 gift card at the event that covered part of my bill. They had vendors on site during the game doing raffles for prizes. We eventually moved outside to finish the second half of the game and sat at the picnic tables outside. There were large fans outside on the outdoor patio that kept the area cool. We were gifted a Doc's brownie (although I think it was dropped off at our table by mistake). First things first: Doc's Backyard is not affiliated with Doc B's in the Domain, despite the similar name. Totally different vibe and menu -- so don't come in expecting the same experience. When you walk in, it's not immediately obvious that it's seat-yourself -- a sign or a friendly heads-up at the entrance wouldn't hurt. We stood awkwardly for a bit before figuring it out on our own. My husband and I ordered the fish and chips, which came as a full order and a half order (see photo). The presentation was nice, but a couple things to note: the fries weren't seasoned, which left them a bit bland. The fish itself was catfish, which surprised me -- most fish and chips I've had are made with cod or haddock. We were out cruising around on the Harley and decided to stop in and have a cold beer. We ordered 2 Shinier Bock Light Blondes. The waitress didn't tell us that it was Draft Beer. We were expecting a bottle or at the least a can. Okay fine, we'll drink them. They should be ice cold and refreshing, but not so much. They were a little colder than cool. We went ahead and drank them, but it wasn't as good as it could have been. Next we ordered an appetizer to split and I wanted to order a Miller Light in a bottle or can, so long as it wasn't Draft. The waitress said that doesn't come in a can. I said I know, it says it comes in a bottle, she seemed confused and she asked another waitress and she told her it comes in a bottle. The waitress turned to me and said do you want it in a bottle...I said yes, please...also, please get an ice cold one. She said okay. Then a gentleman came over and said that they ran out of Miller Light last night and the truck just got here to restock and the beer wouldn't be cold. I asked him what about the a Michelob Ultra? He said yes we have that. So I ordered an Michelob Ultra (in a bottle). The Michelob Ultra wasn't even as cold as the Draft Beers were. Epic fail for ice cold beers! The appetizer was the South Congress Egg Rolls. Neither one of us was a fan. The inside was mostly made up of big chunks of pressed chicken and a little white cheese/sauce. It was pretty dry and bland. The best part of it was the crust. It was crispy light and flaky. I wouldn't recommend this appetizer. The Bar & Grill itself, was nice inside and out on the patio. The area was very clean. The had a lot of TV's so you could watch sports and cheer on your favorite team. To sum it up...It would be a good place to go to watch sports if you're not looking for really ice cold beer. The appetizer we had wasn't very good and the waitress's need to have better knowledge about the beer they serve. I hate giving this kind of review because it's a really nice Bar & Grill, but that's what my experience was like on this visit. I'm willing to give it another shot in the future. My family decided to order and pick up some Doc's for dinner. My husband called in the order on the phone. We drove over there and parked and my husband picked up the food. After driving home and getting our food out we noticed several things. 1-Our order was incorrect. I ordered onion rings instead of fries and we were charged an extra $1.99 for something we didn't get. 2-We noticed an online ordering service charge of 10 percent added to our bill. I'm not sure why that fee was added as we called in our order. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. There is also a playscape for kids. Let's talk about the food. I ordered the Fajita Chicken Nachos as a starter. They were good. They had bean, cheese, and fajita chicken. They were different in that they were on large circular chips. It's not the traditional style of nachos but they were just as good. I really liked the larger chips because they were able to hold the ingredients. They came with a small container of salsa, jalapenos, and sour cream. The salsa was a really good addition as it was flavorful and the jalapenos were fresh. I didn't try the sour cream. For my main dish I ordered the Lone Star chicken sandwich with onion rings. The sandwich had grilled chicken, bacon, guacamole, cheese, lettuce and tomato. It was a really good sandwich. The flavors were all there. My only complaint was that the bread was a little soggy from the ingredients but it was a good sandwich. I would have loved to try the onion rings but I ended up with fries that were good. They were large crinkle cut fries. Soft but crispy on the ends. Not my favorite type of fry but they were good. Overall the service over the phone was friendly and fast which is a positive and the food was good. I would give a higher rating but I was a little disappointed my order was incorrect and that there was a service charge I wasn't expecting. read more

Oh dear this restaurant is not a place I would return. Came for a work event and first tried a margarita. It looked completely different than my coworkers exact same order and also tasted different. I think they forgot the alcohol and lime in mine :/... I asked if they could modify anything to be vegan and the waitress looked at me like I was crazy and said "uh no" although my jobs organizer had called to confirm they did. I tried their guac, salsa, and chips which I assumed vegan. The guac was actually just fine/tasty but the salsa tasted awful, mostly like ketchup. I ordered the bowl without meat, again assuming probably fine. It was fine other than the beans being too salty to eat. There are so many spots to eat in Austin and this would not be the one I'd choose. Service is fast and it's nice to have the indoor-outdoor setup. read more

Went here for the famous $2 margs when it's over 100 degrees and I'd say it was well worth it! The servers were super chill and made the margs a little more special by adding strawberry to it. I also got the loaded tots, because the one thing you gotta get when drinking is tots. And these were solid, definitely a good bar snack. I also got the BAT Sliders. They were a little messy and hard to eat, but made it work because I am Batman. It has been a long time since my last Docs visit. I kind of remember why. It's okay. Walk in at 8pm on a Sat. Tables are all filthy, and it is pretty dead. I get it- they are short-staffed. But no one greeted us or called out "seat yourself." We tried outside. All untaken tables are filthy. The two staffers outside are running ragged. Again, it's pretty dead. The pluses: Do you have kids and need to drink around them? Doc's has your back! Large playscape, sunsails and misters, kiddie menu, and alcohol. And it is next door to Crumbl. Do you like sports, drinks, and want to hang solo? They got you! (I know they do watch parties in the fall, too.) FYI the queso is runny! Came here for the $2 when it's over 100 degree margaritas but unfortunately it was only 97 degrees. I still ordered the frozen watermelon margarita. Very sweet and went down way to fast. My 2nd drink was the Amarillo passion.it was less sweet and tastier in my opinion. Another drink to mention is the frozen jack and coke icee. I'm not a jack fan but it was very mild and nice adult version of the childhood 7-11 slurpees. The shrimp nachos were also good and loaded with beans and all the toppings. The ambience is like the old camp grounds with a huge play area for the kids best for the 3-12 set, but some stuff for younger. Our waitress Alex was the best keeping us drinking plates brought and cleared with just the perfect balance of coming to the table and giving space for us to eat. The fish and chips are outstanding crispy flaky yumminess combined with great fries. The wings are good and standard fare. The nachos are awesome but a bit overpriced. First time here and it was a horrible experience. Environment: I went yesterday for natural margarita day and this place was a absolute MAD HOUSE. The place itself is nice and would normally look like a quiet place. Food: was okay in flavor but came out cold and took over 45 minutes to get. Drinks: they only had one margarita machine going and the drinks were coming out melted. I didn't mind but the drinks got worse and worse. Staff: The management of this place completely failed on managing this event. There was absolutely NO structure to seating or any way for the workers to know who should be served next. This place was a mad house and be a a free-for-all environment. People were standing everywhere hounding over tables trying to get their own seating. I understand not normally having a hostess, but when you have events that market margarita's for $2.22 it's a no brainer that you need as much staffing here as possible. I saw maybe 6 people working the front of house and it took forever to get anything. There was a line for the bar and people were walking out on their tabs because it was taking so long for the line to move. So glad we stumbled upon Doc's while Christmas shopping. We were able to enjoy their awesome happy hour. $4 Texas drafts and $6 appetizers, small boneless wings, or sliders. We decided to share three items. The blackened shrimp nachos were super tasty. I probably enjoyed these the most. The boneless wings with Buffalo sauce had just the right amount of sauce. The pulled pork sliders were a little short on the amount of pork, but still good. We ordered Eastcider drafts for $4 each. Our server was super nice and attentive. This place is a go-to local sports bar hidden in Sunset Valley. It's tricky to find as it's in the corner and maps or Waze doesn't pinpoint it exactly. Don't get discouraged if it's your first time trying to find it. You can do it! We went to watch some NCAA hoops and luckily found a great table outside in front of a huge TV. Dogs are welcome and they have disposable water bowls for dogs and you fill them up yourself. The beer on tap is great. They even have Pinthouse Pizza's ELECTRIC JELLYFISH on tap! I have been here a lot and the food is decent. It comes out hot and the portions are typically a good size. I was underwhelmed by the Buffalo chicken sliders today and here's why... The taste was great. The bun was fresh. We got real blue cheese on the side and fresh lettuce. The size of the chicken on the bun was disappointing. It seemed more like a chicken nugget than a slider. The bun to chicken ratio was way off. Put more chicken on the bun and this would be a fantastic little slider. The place closed at 11 and they didn't kick us out even though we were the last ones there and they were cleaning around us. The game was tied and there was two minutes left. We couldn't leave yet! March Madness Baby! Grab your friends, your dog, and your appetite. This place is great. Side-note: there is a great playground and lots of room for the kiddos. So bring them along too. I went to Docs this evening with a 4 year old and pup for the outdoor playground and being able to have dogs on the outdoor area. Service was NON EXISTENT. You order yourself at the table which I did easily. From there it took 25 minutes to get one water and one coke. They have the kids water without a straw or lid so I asked for those so the 4 year old wouldn't spill it and he said sure but never came back. At 55 min later and no sign of any food or anyone to check back I went and found a waitress in the upper part to ask for help. She said she would check and 10 minutes later our food finally came. We had a mushroom app, kids chicken and side salad. Over an hour for those items?? No apology nothing. They also served the food with no silverware. I told her when she brought it can I please get silverware. Again she said sure but again 15 minutes later no one came back so I had to find someone to watch my kid and dog to venture up and get my own silverware and napkins. It was just a total mess from start to finish. No servers ever came to check or refill or help ever the entire time I was there. The food was cold when we got it which makes me think it just sat there for who knows how long until someone brought it. While the playground was great the service was so awful I probably will try to find another place. As a side not they require you to pay for the food and tip the moment it's ordered which is pretty crappy when you plan to tip well and the service and food is so atrocious. read more

Waitress was great. She was busy but was still engaged. The kicker was that California style business is charging a 3% dine in fee. Which has to be the weirdest thing ever.
