This unAmerican, unorganized, trashy management style has run this restaurant into the ground. Don't plan to eat here unless you are "FULLY vaccinated" - you WILL be asked to leave if you are not. Be prepared for extremely rude bartenders. This was a decent establishment before the pandemic although it has taken a sharp turn for the worst as of late. In my continuing search for good southern style bbq on the islands I stopped by Dixie Grill today. The atmosphere here is as close as you're going to get to that southern bbq feeling way out here in the pacific. Filled with checkered cloth, drunk military and knickknacks all over the place, it had a very rowdy and noisy vibe to it. I tried a bunch of stuff as take out and honestly most of it was horrible. The sides were crap, the pulled pork was dry, the roast beef was super dry and the wings were garbage as well. All of the above lacked flavor and was just entirely disappointing. However, as you've by now noticed with the rating I gave this place, they did one thing very very well. The brisket was just delicious. It was so soft and fork tender with a perfectly smoky taste. I don't think there is any better brisket on the island. Definitely skip the rest and just get the brisket because it is amazing. It may not compare to a lot of mainland bbq, but out here in the pacific it will most certainly suffice. Overall, I see why a lot of people give poor ratings to this place because they fail in a lot of different areas. No vege or sauce inside my sandwich, 3 slices of pickle on the side, very tiny coleslaw in a to go sauce container and unseasoned French fries. Plus, can't sit together as a family. Welp, here we go. Disclaimer. I'm from Atlanta--home to some of the world's best barbeque and ribs. No contest. When you walk in, it's like you've stepped out of Hawaii and into Florida or Louisiana. The feel of the restaurant is very much like a casual southern bbq joint, and I thought it was charming. The service was good and our sweet teas (YES, actual Southern sweet tea!) were kept full. Btw, the sweet tea is gargantuan, so I hope you're ready to down gallons of tea and sugar. I will say, the tea did taste pretty darn close to the tea you get in Georgia, so kudos for that. I know it's near impossible to find here on Oahu. I'll skip straight to the point (the sides were all below mediocre and not worth writing about...). The ribs (wet) were good, not great. The meat was tender enough and the sauces were its saving grace. The ribs come with a tub of six different sauces. I know I'm getting the names wrong, but they're like Texas, South Carolina, Memphis, Hawaiian, and a couple more I don't remember. They are all VERY different, and I recommend putting a small dab of each sauce on an empty plate and trying it out BEFORE dousing your ribs or pulled pork in it. Each one was unique--some sweet, some with heat, others peppery. I do think that there is a sauce in there that will please anybody, but you have to be patient enough to experiment with every single one to find your match. We also ordered the pulled pork and braised beef. The pulled pork was pretty good (especially with the sauces) but the beef was dry. A friend and I were recently traveling around O'ahu and visited the Dixie Grill after our visit to the Pearl Harbor Memorial. The restaurant was a nice little find and we were both pleasantly surprised. We were quickly seated and the waitress got over to our table in prompt fashion. Super friendly, she took our drink orders and also came back with a basket of popcorn that's given to every table when they arrive. For our appetizer, my friend and I split the cajun calamari. The calamari was delicious, and the dipping sauce had a teeny kick of spice. Delightful! Next, my friend and I placed our order - she wanted to try the catfish po boy and I wanted the soft shell crab po boy. My friend also wanted to try the soft shell though, so we asked the waitress if she could just split the sandwiches on our plates. She was super happy to do so and brought us back our dishes quickly. All in all, the food was a tasty, Hawaiian spin on otherwise Southern dishes. I really enjoyed my experience. read more

I have never left a review before but honestly felt like I needed to this time. My boyfriend said he's been here a couple times while stationed and even he said this was the worst of his visits. The food, he ordered a fried chicken sandwich, which was still pink. Came out in like five minutes, before we got our appetizer. The appetizer being fried okra, which was by far the (I'm so sorry), worst fried okra I've had. Absolutely no seasoning, was gooey?? and the only thing that saved it was the sauce. lol. My order was the Big Ed burger, which had really not good brisket. Which i was actually excited about. Maybe I'm biased because I come from a BBQ state, but it was so dry. My hopes were severely let down. The service, our waitress, her name I don't remember was quite sweet, and we had no issue with her. Born and raised in Georgia I can tell you this isn't southern Bbq at its best. The sauce and rubs are too strong and overpower the meat. I had the smoked turkey and it was sliced so thin it appeared to be cold cuts and it was almost cold when served. My husband had the ribs and they were tough and had to be chewed off the bone. I loved this place. This is an amazing bbq place. It smells so good from the time we stepped out of our car. We were seated imediately. They have comfortable booths and a few picnic tables/benches for outside sitting. It is amazing southern food. And the bigger amazin fact is that its in Hawaii! The sweet tea came to the table in a super size cold mug. We were offered popcorn at the table to much on while we waited for our food. The pulled-pork sanwiches were tasty and juicy. This was my one and only visit here and i usually like to give a place more than one chance but i will review and then follow with an update if needed. Upon arrival, we were asked to sign in and there was no open tables for us to get seated. The host asked us to wait a bit and he would call us. So we went back to the car to get away from the heat while we wait, time passed by, no call. Went back to the host and it was like he never saw us before... he said yea, we have some tables, please sign in, uh what?! We get seated, no instructions on downloading the menu, but i am an avid yelper so i already has the menu up on Yelp. No water or utensils, the waitress comes and takes our order. Location/Parking: Dixie Grill is located in Aiea off Kamehameha Shopping Center near Wally Ho's Garage and a kayak store. There is a reasonable amount of parking. Food/Drinks: The BBQ is the way to go! I loved the brisket. The prices and portion is reasonable. They bring out a caddy of BBQ sauce for your BBQ. Sweet Tea is served in a large glass but the sweet tea could be sweeter. My daughter had a grilled cheese meal and it came with a small apple sauce, a carrot stick, a celery stick and French fries. I also tried their fried mac and cheese balls but I was not a fan of it. Popcorn is served for free once your seated. Prices: The Sweet Tea was $4.50 but it was refillable and it was served in a large glass. The one choice BBQ was $12.99 and was worth it for the amount of meat. Ambiance: Southern/Country! The music is country, decor is southern and the atmosphere is laid back. Customer Service: I was a little annoyed on a recent visit that my family checked in first at the front but the family after us got seated first. But the service overall was fine. This place has lost its touch. The food is now below substandard and the service isn't what it used to be. I came back here after moving in 2014, my oh my I'm surprised it's still in business, i think the alcohol price is what's saving the place. I bought my kids the Mac and cheese because that's usually one of their favorite meals. It literally had no flavor. I never ate Mac and cheese where it didn't have flavor, the Kraft box is better than what they're serving. My son got the honey BBQ chicken wings for kids and he said the wings were sour....they literally tasted SOUR. The calamari tasted old, not even worth it. So let's start with main entree. I got the 1 meat from the smoker and two sides. I ordered brisket, cornbread casserole, and Brussels sprouts. My brisket was super dry. It's dryer than burnt thanksgiving turkey. They give you 6 different BBQ sauces and the only good once was Kansas City. The BBQ wasn't even that good either. I shouldn't need sauce for a great juicy and tender brisket. The cornbread casserole was okay. The brussel sprouts were on point and that's what's saving this one star. If it was my choice it would be zero stars. The service was halfassed like if the employee didn't want to be there. All in all i took my food to go and gave it to my dogs. The brisket is just good enough to be dog food at the moment. "Don't judge a book by its cover." This saying absolutely fits for the Dixie Grill. While from the outside it looks a little dreaded... I ask that you let your palate do the judging. The BBQ here is remarkable and the "adult" drinks are worth the trip. The bartender really doesn't hold back on the pour and the drinks alone is worth the trip. I got the BBQ brisket and pork plate and it was juicy and tender. The plate comes with six different sauces from different parts of the region and you can try all of it with your meat choices. If you want a good burger or BBQ at a decent price, I highly recommend Dixie Grill. We went to for the first time last night, during the pandemic. I love that they are trying to save paper by having their menu online. You just scan the code at the door and it comes up on your phone. I had the burger with bacon (forgot the name) and my mom and husband both got a smoker plate. The food was great. My husband loved the Brussels sprouts he got as a side. I ordered my burger medium and it was perfect. We had one if each dessert. The key like pie crust was a bit thick but it was still good. The banana pudding was very yummy. I was glad to see they have regular silverware instead of single use plastic you get at some places right now. The one thing I wish they had was coasters for your drinks. They have one side of the restaurant open to an outdoor patio so the drinks were sweating all over the table. The manager told us it's a supplier problem right now, which is understandable. I guess they usually have them so hopefully they do the next time we go. One other recommendation for the restaurant is wet wipes. My burger was a bit messy and it would have been nice to have a wet wipe to clean my hands with. :) read more

I was craving some southern comfort food and decided to check this place out after hearing nothing but praise from friends. It was a long day after shopping and starving was just the tip of the iceberg. We were seated outside, and while sometimes that is nice, it was very chilly and was raining that night, so no bueno. Our waiter was very friendly however and our drinks were never empty, must be that southern hospitality! I ordered the brisket/pulled pork combination with hush puppies and the famous cornbread casserole. My SO ordered the half rack of ribs with mash and cole slaw. We shared a crab and artichoke dip appetizer. The crab and artichoke dip came with garlic bread and both weren't anything special. The dip was mostly artichoke and was bland. My entree however, of beef brisket and pulled pork was mouthwateringly delicious. There were six bbq sauces to choose from but I believe the Kansas City one was da best! My hush puppies were disappointing, but the cheesy cornbread casserole was one of the best I've ever had. My SO's ribs were decent, and her sides were okay. Overall it was very hit and miss. Had a late lunch at Dixie Grill in Aiea. This has been our sixth time eating there and it gets worse every time. I ordered 2 sweet tea, salad for my wife, and baby back ribs with cornbread and mash potatoes. The ribs taste like it was leftovers from three nights ago. I ate just two pieces, it looked and tasted stale, very dry, far from being juicy. Cornbread was heavy, stale, and flat, mash looked stale and old. I can't understand why the waitress served it to me. Just the look of the dish would turn you away. No hostess. No one greeted us, When we walked in the waitress continued to socialize. She acted as if we interrupted her. It's a bar and far from being a bar & grill. What a turn off, never again! TERRIBLE! Don't do it. Total fail. One star for the sweet tea. read more

The food is pretty good. My only complaint is the Mardi Gras special. Their version of Beignets...was doughnut holes sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar with an orange dip. NO NO NO...DIXIE GRILL...PLEASE TAKE THOSE "BEIGNETS" OFF THE MENU. My husband just brought some home and although it doesn't taste bad its NOT BEIGNETS! Sooooooo bummed at the direction this place went. I used to come here all the time just for the Cornbread Casserole. It's basically cornbread that's more juicy and has actual corn pieces in it. It was straight amazing and the only reason to come here. I'm sad to say that it is no longer the same. It seems like a similar style but it just wasn't good. It also used to come in the size of a small square take out container. Now it came in a small round take out container basically the size of just smaller than a ramekin. On top of that, it was hot and muggy inside the restaurant and service took for ever just to order cornbread. I'm not too worried about writing this review though. They had tons of military guys inside so I don't think they'll go out of business anytime soon. Sad since this was one of my favorite food dishes in Hawaii. Oh well... read more

This is our standby in the days of Covid. The food is great (I love the fried catfish and beans which come with the trash can special) and the staff is gracious. What really wins me over is their covid mitigation - they're great about checking vaccination cards, mask requirements, and distancing. Kudos! read more

I was so surprised to really like this place! It's nothing like the local Hawaii bar & grills at all. Step into Dixie Grill and you feel like you're not in Honolulu anymore, rather you've made your way to the South (as in the southern states of the US mainland, not south of Hawaii...) I love that! When you feel transported. The food is pretty good too, I love the sides. We had Cole slaw, mac n cheese, corn bread casserole, and hush puppies. I had no idea what hush puppies were, but now I am definitely a fan! They have daily happy hour specials which are good for beer, but lackluster for food. This place could use a bit of a remodel. Not saying I don't like the divey look, because I do. However the outside has looked the same for years and isn't that inviting. And the inside looks a bit worn. With a renovation, this restaurant could really revamp itself to be the newest hot spot! read more

Honestly the only reason I'm giving a deduction of a star which I would like to reduce by just half a star is for the no ac, it's an open air restaurant so you will get a bit warm and possibly sweaty so maybe go at night if that bothers you. I've come out during lunch and dinner. They have a nice selection at the bar and TVs usually with sports on. Some of the booths need changing out as there are some pretty big holes in them and some tape to cover them. Just think of a small town bbq joint. Everyone I've encountered has been great, no problems with staff. Food to me has been delicious and any request within reason they have accommodated. I love the cornbread with melted cheese on it. I usually end up taking it to go because by the time I'm done with the main meal I can't finish it but nobody is taking my cornbread "LIFE" if you know you know. The only thing I've had that I didn't care for was the lemonade. It's not fresh lemonade and it was extremely sweet, I waited for the ice to melt down but maybe I should have asked for water to water it down a bit. All my sandwiches I ask for grilled onions and they just make it perfect. Food wise no complaints on anything I've had. Drinks the lemonade is a no for me. I live not even two blocks from here, drive by it twice a day, and had no idea it was there. I only found it because some colleagues at work took me here for a work lunch. At first I thought beach/bbq shack and my initial impression was that I probably couldn't bring the kids here. I was wrong on that one, kids are 100% welcome here and they even have a little sand play area for them. The staff was incredibly friendly and extremely accommodating. Some folks at the bar get a little loud, but its Friday happy hour time so it really didn't bother us. The overall volume is a little on the loud side, which is perfect for us because we don't have to shush our kids a lot. We really felt like they wanted our business and appreciated it. Being from Georgia, I was ecstatic to find an *authentic* Southern grub spot on island. The sweet tea is REAL sweet tea, y'all (iykyk) and the brisket is positively DIVINE. *all the heart eyes* Coloring pages for the keiki. Service is friendly and fast. Food doesn't take forever to come out. Only 4 stars because parking is a bitch here and the country fried steak is way too salty. And I love salt, so that's saying something. There's also a weird mannequin in the restroom (???) that nearly gives me heart failure every time I go in there. But those are my only complaints.
